I am sure he will play guard. LT isn't a big problem.

Shore up the middle and our tackles are going to look much better.

I have a feeling he doesn't care where he plays on the line as long as he is PAID like a tackle. He got his money now he gets to play where Romeo tells him to.

Thomas- 7 years 50 mil ( wild guess)
Steinbach - 7 years 49 mil
Fraley- 4 yrs 12 mil ( Guess)
Bentley- 5 years 37 mil
Shaffer- 6 years 36

that is a crap ton of money

His position is guard. It would be dumb to play him at a position that isn't his strongest.

Yeah, I'm thinking this team would be better off saving some money and getting some average to below-average guys to play OL. That's done well for us in the past.

Is that why he didn't want to be traded to TB?

I remember someone posted this last year when Wimbley signed. This is another one of those times...

Joe Thomas made Justin Timberlake change his name. He didn't want wusses to have the same initials...

Who cares.
For years people have been saying" Let's pay for quality linemen for once and quit going after retreads or 2nd tier linemen".
We finally are trying to do that and you now have to find fault with it.
Give me a break!

I totally agree you have to put players where they will accel but if he is better than shaffer at LT then you COULD play him there. I would rather keep him at guard and draft joe thomas to play next to him (wow wouldn't that make me happy) but if he is best option at lt he will probably play there.

Shaffer is in the same boat as stienbach. play him where he will be the most usefull. Tackle or guard it doesn't matter as long as we keep improving the o-line.

By the way I didnt mention this but look at this contract and Dielman is suppose to sign for similar money:
Dockery- 7yrs 49 million dollars 14 million in guarantees- Bills

IMO Dockery is not Steinbach

This is a great signing. As for the question of which position to play. That seems pretty easy. Our weakest position on the line was at Guard. His best position is Guard. Why then would you play him at Tackle?

I don't like Schaffer but he was better at his position than any of our guards.

Well I don't care just as long as they produce. I really think we would be well served to pick up Joe Thomas and a G in the second round. We would really address the o-line and should be set for a good amount of time. Think about it:

LT: Thomas
LG: Stienbach
C: Fraley/ Bently (if he can come back)
RG: 2nd rounder (hopefully Sears)
RT: Shaffer

That right there is a pretty solid line that could develope into a very, very good line. I just hope that Phil thinks this is the only thing that we need to do to the o-line.

Before we all get caught up in the 49 million, lets see the terms of the contract - bonus money is spread across 5 years and if it is backloaded, say soemthing like

15 M to sign (3m each year from 2007-2011)
2M in 2007
3M in 2008
4M in 2009
5M in 2010
6M in 2011
7M in 2012
7M in 2013

there's a chance he won't even see all the money - first year cap hit on the example above is 5M, plenty of room to sign a Clements...

If that's the case Phil actually got a good deal. With the kind of money being thrown around it's going to be real crazy the next couple of days.

When I first got on here on the main page I seen Steinbach just signed, and that is all I seen. I was scared to open up the page because I thought it might say someone else.

On that note.

Not to be a party pooper, but I still haven't seen this on anything truly reliable. Hopefully it will be up soon, but until then, I'm not getting my hopes up too much.

You guys are forgetting about Tucker. He's done us a helluva job over the years. Nothing wrong with him at Right tackle. Makes sense to leave him there and then pick up Peterson in the draft.
oh, and by the way.... WELCOME TO CLEVELAND, ERIC!!!!

well, there's one great Guard, now let's get the other, can you imagine Steinbach and LCB as our Guards, WOW. However, it looks like we won't be signing Clements now. He's almost reached a deal with the 49'ers.

Steinbach Signs with Browns
Rick Stewart/Getty Images

By Site Staff

Posted Mar 2, 2007

Scout.com has confirmed this evening that OG Eric Steinbach has signed with the Cleveland Browns for 7 years and $49 million.

The OBR can confirm televised reports this evening that Cincinnati Bengals UFA G Eric Steinbach has signed a contract with the Cleveland Browns.

Browns General Manager Phil Savage told reporters on Tuesday of last week that the team intended to address the interior of the offensive line, and has done so very quickly with the addition of Steinbach.

The Iowa lineman has been in the NFL for four years and started every game for Bengals in 2006, primarily at left guard. Steinbach filled in one game at center and another at left tackle. Overall, Steinbach has played in all but one of 65 possible games since coming into the league in 2003. The signing makes up somewhat for GM Butch Davis' decision to bypass Steinbach in the 2003 draft in favor of Notre Dame center Jeff Faine.

Steinbach will likely take the place of veteran left guard Joe Andruzzi, who struggled increasingly with knee problems through the 2006 season for the Browns. Despite his determination to play, Andruzzi was not perceived to be an acceptable option for the Browns in 2007.

Steinbach does provide the Browns with several options, however, as he can play left tackle, which would allow Kevin Shaffer to move to the right. Some NFL analysts feel Steinbach could also play at an All-Pro level at the center position.

The OBR is told that the deal is worth $49 million over seven years with $23 million in the first three years. We have also been told $17 million guaranteed. We are working to confirm any and all contract details.

Yeah that was pretty dumb. I still think it's good to be loyal to a player like Tuck for all the trench work he's put in for us.

Also makes sense to draft Joe Thomas to play LT and moving Tuck inside. THEN we can start stuffing the damn ball down every teams throat they way they have done it to us since 99. With that line we could run somebody new out of the stands every week while we wait to get our RB in 2008

NFL Network just said that if Dielman doesn't get a deal done with Seattle tonight that he's headed to Cleveland for a visit. Wouldn't THAT be sweet??
