Nothing like spending a sunny summer day or warm summer night indoors. In fact I say we get a petition together and have the Indians put a roof on Jacobs field.

You can always go retractable,...I'm just speaking to the point of losing these game opportunties to the weather -- football not so much of a problem, but baseball has to be played in "the dry." And late in September, early October, when we're in the playoffs, there wouldn't be any possibility of a rainout. To me, this is important to any buildup of momentum.

:raises hand::

I am one, and I have zero shame in saying that. When they suck again, I won't pay attention - again. There's absolutely nothing entertaining about watching your team suck eggs.... and honestly, I *wish* on several levels that I was like this with the Browns instead of being a sucker that gets drawn in to watch every Sunday come hell or high water. Life sure would be simpler

*Yawn*

What a boring 10 run 4th inning.

Tribe up 13-0 going to the bottom of the 4th.

Sizemore's out ..... and Shoo and Santana each have 1 hit and no RBI.

The rest of the team has 16 hits and all 19 RBI.

One really nice thing about tonight's game is that the Indians have beat up the Royals' bulpen pretty badly tonight.

Their bullpen has been beat to death tonight. Davies went out early ..... and their bullpen has 3 guys with 29+ pitches tonight ..... and they are on their 4th reliever right now.

Ouch.

The 3rd Royals pitcher, Mazzero, set a big baseball record tonight. He was the 3rd pitcher to EVER give up 14 ER's and the first to do it in under 3 innings. So his 2 1/3 innings was probably the worst ever in the 100+ years of baseball. Amazing. I feel sorry for him. They left him in go eat some outs and the Indians gave him a full plate of hits as a bitter side dish.

Good against KC with Detroit losing too.

Yep. All in all a satisfying day of baseball. lol

The Royals will almost certainly have to make some kind of roster move to get some bullpen help. They blew up several guys tonight that probably won't be available to pitch tomorrow.

Short, 2 game series against the Royals, then off for 2 against the White Sox.

As a side note ...... I have been so impressed with Michael Brantley. Many young players would have trouble with adjusting from bumping from top of the order to late middle ..... to back to lead off ...... but he's been rolling right along.

This was the lead-in for the AP article:

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Pounding out 20 hits and walking eight times, the well rested Cleveland Indians belted Kansas City and put Vin Mazzaro in the record book as pitching the worst game in Royals history.

Mazzaro gave up 10 runs in the fourth inning and became the third pitcher since 1947 to allow 14 runs in a game, according to STATS LLC. He also became the newest addition to the Triple-A staff in Omaha, where he was demoted to immediately following the 19-1 loss by the Royals on Monday night.

KC certainly knows how to boost a young pitcher's confidence.

They needed relievers for the next few days. They didn't really have any choice in that regard.

just kidding. well, not about having them on my fantasy team (I do), but about caring that much. love that we came out of a bit of a slump and then a rainout against our slump-buster (Wedge) and decided to make KC our female-dog, so to speak.

KC is going to be ridiculously talented the next few years. good to see that we are showing them their place early and can hopefully keep that up.

Acta is sure sticking to his guns with Santana and Shoo, and I'm not sure I get why. I remember when I was at the Angels series they had the lineup on the scoreboard, and there's our #3 hitter with a .210 avg and our #4 hitter below the Mendozza line. Late in the game, the Indians were back to the top of the order in a tie game ... and I'm thinking, "Well here comes the bowels of the order up to bat this inning."

Not sure why we didn't have Brantley leading off, with Sizemore at #3 (he seems like your typical #3 type hitter now), and Pronk at #4.

I agree that Santana needs to drop in the order just to take the pressure off and let him get his confidence back. Acta has been saying since Spring Training that Sizemore is most comfortable in the leadoff role and he wanted to make him comfortable. It seemed to be working, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt there.

Choo is the most perplexing. He has been so friggin' consistent and now that we finally have a good team his bottom drops out? Honestly, if you look at the peripheral stats, it looks like Santana should pull out of his slump more than the veteran Choo (he walks a bunch, his pitches per at bat are really high, etc).

I'm thinking he knows they'll both come around soon....Choo's earned the right to work his way out of the slump, not sure about Carlos. As long as we're playing well as a team, I don't see the harm.

I don't have the splits with me....maybe they're both hitting better the last week or so. That might back up Acta's decision too.

I'm really happy for Brantley and LaPorta. They are shutting up those people that complained about the CC trade. We were going to lose CC no matter what....we may have found one decent piece (LaPorta) and a really good piece (Brantley) in return.

The Worst Pitching Performance Ever
Baseball | Comments
Decrease font
Enlarge font

Mazzaro, 24, became the first reliever since World War II to allow 14 runs in a game. (AP)

The worst pitching performance in the history of baseball began innocently (highlights). Vin Mazzaro entered the Kansas City-Cleveland game on Monday night in the top of the third inning, with his Royals losing 3-0. He had to come into the game early because Royals starter Kyle Davies left in the first inning with a sore shoulder. Reliever Nate Adcock came in, allowed a run in the second, and walked the leadoff man in the third.

Thus entered Mazzaro.

The Royals had traded David DeJesus to Oakland for Mazzaro during the off-season. The word from scouts was that Mazzaro had good stuff. The Royals had intended to make Mazzaro their fifth starter, but he did not impress the Royals much during spring training or in his early minor league work. He pitched a little better after that, though, and the Royals brought him up when Bruce Chen got hurt.

In his first inning, Mazzaro got Travis Hafner to fly out, struck out Orlando Cabrera and then, after uncorking a wild pitch — which I only mention to use a favorite verb “uncork” — he induced Travis Buck into an inning-ending groundout.

You never would have guessed from that first inning that Mazzaro was about the make history. But isn’t that the thing about history? You rarely see it coming. Who saw the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act coming? Point is, Matt LaPorta led off the fourth inning with a single, and then Mazzaro got Jack Hannahan to hit into a fielder’s choice. Man on first, one out, no runs allowed yet.

Mazzaro walked Michael Brantley…. Asdrubal Cabrera blooped a single over short to score Hannahan (Run 1)…. Pitching coach Bob McClure went to the mound to calm down Mazzaro. Hey, no big deal. A single, a walk, a bloop, can happen to anyone…. And the talk may have calmed Mazzaro. He got Shin-Soo Choo to fly to center. Yes, it was deep to center. But it was still an out — there were now two outs with runners on first and third.

And here we go:

A. Cabrera stole second…. Mazzaro walked Carlos Santana to load the bases…. Hafner doubled to clear those bases (Runs 2, 3, 4)…. O. Cabrera singled home Hafner (Run 5)…. Buck hit an infield single…. LaPorta crushed a double into the left field corner (Runs 6, 7)…. Hannahan hit a ground-ball single…. And Michael Brantley homered (Runs 8, 9, 10).

Yep, that’s a 10-run inning. Mazzaro struck out A. Cabrera to end the nastiness, but, as the announcers like to say, the damage was done. Bad as it was to allow 10 runs, however, it was not HISTORIC damage. Lots of relievers have given up 10 runs in an appearance — heck, just since 1919, 148 pitchers have done it. Shoot, it wasn’t even historic for the Royals: Kansas City’s Jimmy Gobble did it less than three years ago. There are some pretty familiar names on the list of relievers who have allowed 10 runs — Joe Sambito, Calvin Schiraldi, Mel Rojas, Dave LaRoche, Spec Shea, Art Ditmar and so on.

So, no, Vin Mazzaro did not make any real history in the fourth inning in Kansas City, Mo., on Monday night.

But … then he came out for the fifth inning.

We can speculate all we want why Royals manager Ned Yost sent Mazzaro out there for the fifth inning. He certainly wanted to save some of his other arms in what had become a lost game. He probably wanted to give Mazzaro a chance to get some outs and at least cushion the horror of the night. Maybe he was just ticked off.

Whatever, Mazzaro got the first out of the inning, retiring Choo on another fly out. But then Carlos Santana doubled…. Travis Hafner walked…. Again McClure visited the mound, though at this point I’m not sure what there was to say. You would assume that everyone realized there would be no happy ending, and Mazzaro would have been pulled for his own good.

But no. He stayed. And he gave up an infield single to O. Cabrera, which loaded the bases.

Travis Buck then hit a line-drive single to left SO HARD that only one run could score (Run 11). And that, finally, was the last pitch thrown by Vin Mazzaro.

Unfortunately for him, the loaded bases he left out there — well, as you know, all those runners were his responsibility. Reliever Jeremy Jeffress came into the game, and he could have done Mazzaro a solid by getting a double play and ending the nightmare. He did not. He instead threw a 95-mph fastball that Matt LaPorta scorched off the wall in left field (Runs 12, 13). Man, did LaPorta hit that one. The ball didn’t have enough lift to be a grand slam, but it was smashed hard enough that it could have gone through the wall. And when Hannahan grounded out to short (Run 14), the night of Vin Mazzaro was officially over.

His line: 2 1/3 innings, 11 hits, 14 runs, all earned, three walks and two strikeouts.

And that’s history: No reliever since World War II had allowed 14 runs in a game — that unlucky soul was the somewhat unfortunately named Les McCrabb, whom teammates called “Buster.” Heck, no STARTING PITCHER has allowed 14 runs in a game since 1998, when Mike Oquist did the deed, and it has now only happened three times in the last 60 years.

What’s more amazing is that nobody in baseball history had ever allowed 14 earned runs in fewer than three innings pitched until Mazzaro did it. True, you could argue that Lefty O’Doul’s outing in 1923, when he allowed 16 runs in three innings was worse … except that THIRTEEN of those runs were unearned (That’s right: 13 were unearned). It seems pretty clear. Vin Mazzaro — through a combination of bad luck, bad pitching and bad timing — had the worst pitching performance in baseball history.

There’s no telling what happens to Mazzaro now. It seems unlikely that he will stay in the big leagues. But you never know about the future. Mazzaro should take a little solace knowing that in one game, a 20-year-old pitcher gave up 15 hits and 15 runs — including home runs to a couple of guys named DiMaggio and Gehrig. He walked nine. He threw a wild pitch. It wasn’t good.

That guy was named Bob Feller, and he led the American League in victories the next three years.

Les McCrabb had a different destiny. After his rough game, in which he gave up 14 runs in four innings, he disappeared from the big leagues for eight years. He managed to show up for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1950, though. He gave up seven hits in an inning. Buster McCrabb pitched a scoreless third of an inning the next time out and retired to Quarryville, Pa., where he grew mushrooms and lived to be 94 years old. So that’s not too bad, either.

Great paragrapgh! I laughed out loud after each sentence.

I wish Mazzaro the best. Rough, rough night.

The Tribe the past few seasons sure do like to be in the storybooks. Trading back to back Cy Young winners, Cabrera's unassisted triple play, Armando Gallaraga perfect game, and now the worst pitching performance ever.

Add "22-0" against the Yankees and the Seattle 12-run comeback in 2001.

What's odd...we lost both of those series.
