Even funniner....it wasn't the Cavs pick that got the top stop. So, were they trying to rig more help for the Clippers?

well, they knew the Clippers had given up the pick, so he was trying to rub it in their faces more? okay, maybe on that one

also, 2 of the top3 picks were acquired by trade (Cavs from Clips, and Jazz from Nets)

Here's my 1st lottery mock:

1. Cavs – Kyrie Irving, PG, Duke – feels good to type that.
2. Twolves – Derrick Williams, SF/PF, Zona – even Kahn can’t screw this up, right?
3. Jazz – Brandon Knight, PG, Kentucky – Jazz system is built on PG-play and Harris was terrible at it. Can’t believe they would change their system, so they go get their PG.
4. Cavs – Enes Kanter, PF/C, Turkey – let the Jonas V. vs. Kanter debate begin. Everything I read so far has a higher ceiling for Kanter, so he’s the pick.
5. Raptors – Jan Vesely, SF/PF, Czech – Colangelo loves the Euros and this guy apparently has elite athleticism which Toronto desperately needs.
6. Wizards – Bismack Boyimba, C, Congo – the Wizards need a SF-scorer to pair with Wall more than anything, but none exist in this draft outside of Derrick Williams. So, they shore up the defensive end with a raw center who can block and rebound everything in sight.
7. Kings – Kemba Walker, PG/SG, UConn – I don’t think they’ll be able to help themselves with this pick. Neither Tyreke nor Kemba is a pure PG, but they can play together with a dribble-drive offense and create interesting offensive scenarios for the team. They are pretty well set with bigs and Casspi is the same player as Kawhi, so if the draft plays out this way, Kemba might make the most sense.
8. Pistons – Jonas Valanciunas, PF/C, Lithuania – basically, best case scenario for the Pistons from this spot. Hopefully, they do not see it this way and trade us the pick for the TPE and dumping Rip Hamilton’s contract. If the Cavs did have this pick too, then it would be a tossup between Jonas, Kawhi and Burks.
9. Bobcats – Kawhi Leonard, SF, SD State – funny that they trade Gerald Wallace and could potentially draft “the next Gerald Wallace” just a few months later.
10. Bucks – Chris Singleton, SF/PF, FSU – paired with Bogut, they could have 2 fierce competitors in the paint to make life miserable on opponents (assuming Singleton’s foot checks out okay)
11. Warriors – Donatas Motiejunas, PF/C, Lithuania – a lot will depend on who their coach is and what they do with Monta/Curry, but they really need some size on the team. Better PF prospects at this point, but they have David Lee, so I think they reach for a center.
12. Jazz – Alec Burks, PG/SG, Colorado – not a perfect fit for their system as the SG tends to be a spot-up shooter. But, most talented guy left and they can use him as a backup PG if they get rid of Harris or use him on some backdoor action to the basket.
13. Suns – Kenneth Faried, PF, Morehead State – they love their high energy guys and you don’t get more high energy than Faried. They also could use the rebounding and potential defense (he’s lacking there but has the tools and mindset).
14. Rockets – Markieff Morris, PF, Kansas – don’t be surprised if they reach for a guy like Lucas Nogueira as they need size badly. But, I thin they play it smart and take the best big talent on the board rather than reaching (Morey doesn’t like to reach).

If I am the Cavs, I go Irving and Kanter if available and then I would find a way to work myself back up for Fareed. Fareed gives you the Dennis Rodman defender/rebounder that just makes everyone better.

my only problem with Faried is that he duplicates with AV. if we know there is a good trade market for AV, then I can get aboard that train.

also, Faried is not a skilled defender yet. the times I saw him he was getting beat by his man. he was a very good help defender though and has the skillset to be a good defender. he just needs more coaching there (IMO).

the cavs have a pick at 32 as well. assuming they don't package it with #4 to move up or acquire some other player, is there anyone there who can be a good contributor? maybe they use it for a project type pick?

if we went irving and kanter which i think is the best situation that is realistically possible, i would then hope we can find some kind of a swingman. i want someone big and physical who can deal with 2 and 3 guards.

Well, they do already have a 22 year old SF Michael Beasley and a 22 year old PF Kevin Love. I'm just saying it's not guaranteed. This could possibly be Kanter. He did seem ticked off about not getting Irving, so it could possibly be Knight as well.

So given that the Cavs desperately need a SF who can score, and it's assumed they will take Irving #1... what would you guys think about #4 + #32 to Minny for #2 to take Williams?

We've got two first rounders next year already, and I'm sure we've got some roster pieces the team wants to keep (Hickson, Eyenga, maybe Sessions or Gibson.) There's no guarantee we'll be in a position to get Barnes next year, so why not give up #32 to get Williams?

Maybe they package their 2 2nds and next year's 1st round pick from the Heat and turn all of that into another 1st round pick this year?

Maybe they use 1 or 2 of those picks, plus their trade exemption on a guy like Andre Iguadola?

Who knows?

What I do know is that I trust Dan Gilbert to do everything he can to make this team a great team ASAP.

I think that draft day will be interesting.

What about trading out of the #1 pick. Picking up a potential lottery pick from a team you know is going to be bad. Minnesota? They seemed to want Irving REALLY bad.

Picking up an extra first next year, in one of the deepest drafts you'll see in a loooong time.

how about this, irving goes 1, williams and kanter go 2 and 3 in whatever order. then what?

do you listen to trade offers a little harder? do you just go bpa and take knight or walker?

the good thing is that chris grant has a firm grip on the international circuit, so hopefully if he thinks one of these guys could be the next great int'l star, he'll grab him.

Yeah, but you don't think they'd trade #2 overall + next year's 1st for #1, do you? Or even #2 overall + next year's 1st for #1 this year and Miami's 1st next year? I mean, of course if they want to do that I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I just know that we need to come out of this draft with 2 "plus" starters .... 1 way or another.

see, it's really hard because you can't think rationally here, because we're talking about David Kahn, that all goes out the window.

i don't think anyone is going to trade picks in next year's draft for picks in this year's draft. if they do, then jump all over that, but i doubt it.

also, i don't think the #32 pick in this shallow draft is enough to warrant a drop from #2 to #4 for the Twolves. they also have noted that they want veteran help if they shop the pick.

at #32, the guy I really want won't likely be there (Honeycutt), so the guy I would like the Cavs to draft is Charles Jenkins (SG, Hofstra).

I still would like to see David Lighty on this team.....some homerism there, but he is the type of player that people like to be around and coaches like to teach. His offense is suspect at times, but he is a great defender.

you know, with the lockout looming, you might be right.

although maybe not because of the possibility of a hard cap, maybe teams wanna wait another year before signing these guys?

i have no idea.

I was thinking more along the lines of next year's draft has the potential to be 10x better than this year's draft.

if the lockout cancels next season, I would think they would preserve this year's draft and have next year's with the same order (redoing the lottery of course). I don't think the lockout would change the minds of teams in regards to how they value draft picks this year and next though.

Same, in my opinion he was one of the best college defenders, esp from the guard spot. I can always use a top defensive talent on my team.

That would give us 3 picks in the 1st round next year.

I honestly don't see Gilbert giving up this year's picks. Maybe the 2nd rounders ... but not the 1st rounders.

Why? We don't know where any of those picks would be for the Cavs. They could get screwed in the lottery drawing like the other teams and be picking 8, 11, &16.

Sure, this draft is weak.....but as a GM, I'd rather take #1 and #4 now than risk getting a worse pick next year AND losing a whole year to cultivate a rookie.

Exactly, that would be a horrendous move. We could end up trading a 1 and a 4 for a 2 and a 14

FYI, Wolves don't have a first round pick next year. The Clippers have the rights to the pick and it is unprotected.

ASSUMING there is a draft next year, ASSUMING the draft is deeper (we know it might be, not a guarantee), and ASSUMING the NBA has a new CBA that doesn't raise the rookie contracts.

Too many assumptions for me.

You can play the woulda, coulda, shoulda game all day. We could see the NFL's 3 years removed system adopted by the NBA. If that happens next year's class would be horrible.

You can't jump out for a maybe next year, especially when a lottery is involved and the real talent next year is freshmen and sophomores. I wouldnt do it.

Besides I am not buying this weak draft class talk anyway. All classes have their strengths and their weaknesses.

This is where u gotta be careful...And I don't think the Cavs brass will nor should tread on those waters...

The Top 4 or so in THIS draft r right up there with previous...Excluding a dumb ass from Akron...TAKE it while u can...

We have no idea if there will be those limitations next year for Freshman or even Soph's coming out...

NO WAY should we gamble on that...

Take Irving and whoever is there at 4 and RUN...

not that it matters because I doubt we make any trade with our picks, but I really don't believe that.

you already excluded the ridiculous 2003 draft as that is the gold standard.

but, there is no Dwight Howard, Blake Griffin, John Wall, or Derrick Rose in this draft. a player that is believed to be a slam dunk elite NBA player with elite athleticism to match elite skill. maybe Irving develops into one, but that belief isn't there predraft like it was in most of the previous drafts.

spots 2 through 4 are more debateable. outside 2008's stacked draft, there have always been a bunc more question marks outside that top talent (though 2007 was believed to have 2 elite talents and Durant went #2)

OK, the Cavaliers have the Heat's 2nd rounder next year from New Orleans, and 2 of Miami's 1st round picks starting no sooner than 2013 (and no later than 2017 ..... which locks Miami out of a lot of trades for some time to come) and a future 2nd round pick Miami got from Oklahoma City.

The trade exemption, if I read it correctly, remains available for 1 calendar year from July 9th, 2010.

great read by adrian wojnarowski on the cavs/lebron/and irving

i think i heard about how lebron's agency (CAA) had chased irving down and eventually irving declined. but i didn't remember until i read the story. maybe it's fate.

what a horrible, horrible situation the cavs and dan gilbert would have on their hands had that kid signed with CAA. honestly, he probably still could have been a cav, but with the way the national media likes to tailor their stories, it would have been more bad pub. like "oh look at how lbj is still controlling cleveland, blah blah blah", the typical stuff you'd expect from them.

i heard mike and mike ran a promo today saying the cavs were still going to stink because they couldn't draft lbj. are you serious bspn?

Why the hell would a rookie even need an agent anyway?

His 1st contract is a standard rookie deal locked into the salary cap. A kid who can read doesn't need an agent, they need a lawyer to check the details .... a really good one that they can pay 5 hours at $300/hour to do all of the work.

Why would a player give an agent or agency 6-8% of his deal to do ..... nothing?

Now, after he signs, if he wants to find someone to handle endorsements and stuff .... then fine ...... but why would he waste his money prior to that point?

because the amount that an agency will help you find those endorsement deals and such depends on how much money you are giving the agency plus the security in knowing that all the t's are crossed and i's are dotted (a lawyer can do much of that, but these agencies have lawyers who do nothing but look at these specific contracts)

endorsement deals. and it's just good to have that kind of representation at all times. a guy like kyrie who will be taken #1 is going to want that endorsement deal immediately.

you probably could do it though. if you wanted to wait until you were an unrestricted FA.

Nah .... the kid could sign a deal that covers endorsement deals only for the duration of his first contract, and find a good lawyer to handle the contract details.

I would bet that rookie contracts on a rookie scale are fairly standard fare. No need to let an agent make money off you for doing nothing IMHO. Let them make their money on the 2nd contract and on endorsements.

yeah but who barters that deal for the first endoresment deal? you want someone experienced in that room. you don't want to get bullied. cam newton just signed one that pays him a mil per year.

you want that representation right away, in the long run it probably pays off.

That's why you sign a deal that specifically deals with endorsements and a 2nd contract only.

I mean ... if it's me, I hire someone to handle endorsements only. I can handle a simple rookie contract, and pay a lawyer .... hell, even if I pay someone $5000 to handle that rookie deal, and then pay someone else a percentage on endorsements, I'm gonna come out way ahead of paying someone a percentage on a multi-million dollar deal plus a percentage on my endorsements.

Assume a guy gets a $4 million deal ..... and the agents makes 3%. The agent gets $120,000 for handling a rather mundane and pre-determined contract that a contract lawyer can handle for a few hours rate.

Why pay someone for that?

Hire someone to handle endorsements, and handle the contract with a pawyer paid by the hour. If a guy is "all that", then an agent will be happy to work for endorsements and that 2nd contract.
