Making one of the boldest strikes in franchise history, the Patriots [team stats] tonight have agreed to a preliminary deal with free agent linebacker Adalius Thomas. According to sources with knowledge of the negotiations, the Patriots beat out the 49ers for Thomas, a Pro Bowler and jewel of the free agent class who is considered a prototypical fit for the Patriots’ 3-4 system. “Thomas is done there,” the source said. Terms were not immediately available, but it’s worth noting that cornerback Nate Clements has agreed to an eight-year, $80 million deal with the 49ers that included more than $20 million in guaranteed money.

Nicknamed “Slash” for his ability to play any linebacker spot as well as defensive end, defensive tackle, safety and even corner, the 6-foot-2, 270-pound Thomas made one Pro Bowl on special teams and another at linebacker with the Ravens. He recorded a career-high 11 sacks in 2006 and gives the Patriots a formidable linebacking corps that also includes Tedy Bruschi [stats], Mike Vrabel and Rosevelt Colvin.
Selected in the sixth round of the 2000 draft, 13 picks ahead of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady [stats], Thomas worked his way from special teams to starter.
He was only available because the Ravens chose not to franchise him for $7.2 million.
“That was not an 11th-hour decision,” said Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome. “We’ve been facing that since the beginning of training camp, knowing that we could have to make that decision. I think it was a fair decision. I think it was fair for the organization and for A.D. I think it was the fair thing to do.”
The Patriots would apparently agree.

great pick up for them.. probably a dream come true for Adalius.

Well, their linebacking corps isn't getting any younger and they had the cap space to make the move. The Pats just keep making good move after good move. I wonder what it would be like to have an FO / coaching staff like that. <sigh>

This doesn't help the Ravens, and that's a good thing.

the mad genius had a brand new toy.
With the flexability with A.Thomas, BIll is gonna have a field day running his tricky crouching Blitzer Hidden defender D.

This is surprising. New England typically does not spend big money in FA.

They have lost a lot of players in recent years and I guess they figured Thomas was too good to pass up. He was the one defensive player I wanted the Browns to go after.

Yeah, although he is getting older, he seems to still have a lot of gas left in the tank.

I would have liked to see the Browns sign him as well.

LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

You gripe about giving a young CB big money, but you want to give a guy who has maybe 3 years left in the tank at best 60 million???...........and he plays on a unit where we actually have talent and heavy investments at??? No thanks for me bud..............I would have been pissed if we gave either those kinds of deals, but I could have dealt with the Clements signing better, because he actually would have been there when we are hopefully competing for the big prize...................AT would have been long gone..........especially with that contract. We are doing it right (so far anyway), and going after young players that can fill a spot for the next 5-7 years..............not the senior circuit stuff we've been doing.

NO MORE DINOSOURS PHIL!!!!!!!!!!!
