A Perry/Rubio ticket could be very, very formitable.

It would definitely fire up the base ...... and excite Hispanic voters. Rubio might also help grab some young voters.

Peel away any number of the layers that helped elect Obama the first time around and you make it much easier to beat him. Perry is more conservative than many of the other Republicans .... which I would support ..... and he has an automatic "in" with the Tea Party crowd. He's well spoken, well funded, and can debate issues very effectively.

I would happily support Perry or Christie.

The problem with Palin being on a ticket is that she has so far to go to make her positives outweigh her (perceived and real) negatives.

Her at the top of the ticket would be like running Dan Quayle. They each have perceived intelligence deficiencies, and any misspeak or mistake will be amplified and exaggerated by the media. This will cause those who don't pay close attention to immediately disregard her as a serious candidate.

People say that they don't want "lifelong" politicians as their leaders .... but you get faux pax and mis-speak from those who haven't rehearsed their rhetoric for years and years. People want "new" and "perfect" all at the same time .... and it rarely works that way.

There's very little to argue with you about what you've said.

I'll just add, that whatever the negative perception of her is now, there are 18 months to change that perception in a more positive way. The same goes for Obama. His perception isn't all that good right now either and it can get much worse. Just ask Bush the Elder.

And what did they guy that bought the jet say? And why should we believe him? Just curious to find out. I'm not suggesting that I'd be persuaded by it but I'm open to hearing a legitimate point-of-view.

I couldn't stand Huckabee at all. I'll give him this much, he speaks well and he's usually educated about the issues he's asked about, which isn't necessarily what I would quiz him on.

I could possibly vote for Herman Cain (not just the 'pizza guy'). He was a deputy chairman of the Kansas City Federal Reserve and a member of numerous boards of large companies. I have more in-depth questions for him though. I have serious doubts about his ability to solve the nations problems.

I'm not sure why you would necessarily exclude Sarah Palin with your comment on debt, medicare and social security. on either side.

Since we are talking about possible GOP candidates in 2012..

Rick Perry may throw his hat into the ring for the 2012 Presidential Election -(New York Times)

You mean the guy that was Al Gore's Texas Chairman when Al Gore tried to win the 1988 Democratic nomination for president?

Yeah. That'll go over well. He's got huge issues with immigration, taxes, accepting federal money to shore up Texas' budget and now faces a huge budget deficit.

That Rick Perry is thinking about jumping into the GOP nomination?

Eh ... if the guy was a Democrat as a youth, but has credible Conservative credentials since, I can live with that.

Hell, Reagan was a Democrat at one point.

Plus, there were a lot of Democrats back in the Clinton era. It was a perfect storm of economic activity, low unemployment, and "balanced budgets" that brought many borderline people into the Democrat Party.

I don't see any perfect candidates in this race. I am looking for the closest that fit my biggest isues, and who are electable. I thin that Christie is closest ..... but Perry might be electable.

I do not think that Palin is electable. I like some of her Tea Party inspired principles, but I just don't think that she has perception of having the intellectual weight necessary. Face it ... she's the person who will wind up on SNL, The Daily Show, and every other comedy show each and every time she screws up.

The best thing that Republican Party can do for the Obama re-election campaign is to nominate Palin.

I find Palin to just be a parrot for the most part. I'd hear people saying certain things in the news and a few days later she opens her mouth and says the same thing in different words.

J/C and curious. Do you see any similarities between Palin and Bachmann? Parts of what I have seen seems to involve speeches long on sound bytes, shallow inflammatory remarks, and some "stuff" that plays to a crowd fed what it wants to hear. Runninng is one thing, winning is another. Media seems to amp up the good and the bad. Is there a "woman's place" in the party and on a viable ticket?

Oh, but Palin reads every newspaper known to mankind!!

She reads all of them in the morning with her coffee. I wonder how she feels about some of the local issues in my town - she knows about them since she reads the local newspaper.

Don't believe me? She said so herself. She reads EVERY newspaper.

She said that? Can you provide a link to a statement by her or a video of her saying so? Or, are you just making things up again?

Now, I'm sure that Obama reads everything. I'm sure he's got a copy of LeMonde (French edition) in his hands right now, soaking it all up. If he had, his foreign policy might be better than it is. If he picked up the Financial Times, his economic policies might make a lick of sense. But I digress.

He's referring to the interview Palin had with Katie Couric during the election.

She asked what newspapers she reads and her response was "all of them' or something like that.

Dumb answer to be sure. Made her appear shallow...

True .... but it is harder to get Obama off "message".

He'll answer a question with an answer that has nothing at all to do with the question asked. This isn't new, as most experienced politicians will answer with "message" rather than an actual answer.

It's a skill that some of the less experienced haven't mastered, and it makes them look bad.

Experienced candidate is asked about insurance reform ..... and he goes into his stump speech .... whether it applies or not.

The less experienced candidate tries to answer, makes a mistake, and looks like an idiot by comparison.

The massive goofs are what make the news ..... not the political speech as usual.

As far as Bachmann .... I am uncertain about her. She's said some things that I wholeheartedly agree with .... and some things that make me wonder what planet she lives on. (specifically about the founders ......... crazy stuff much like last election cycle when Obama said that he wanted to visit all 57 states .........)

As far as someone complaining earlier in this thread about Rick Perry having worked for Gore's campaign ..... Bachmann and her husband actually worked for Jimmy Carter's campaign.

Yikes. lol

Okay. And, look at the video again. I don't think she was talking about the Cleveland Plain Dealer or the Akron Beacon-Journal or even the Des Moines Register. Take a look at what she said. Of course, if you're lazy and want to be told what to think, then his remark puts the emphasis on that.

On the other hand, if you (about anyone in general) want to look at something objectively and listen to what is said before commenting (or parroting someone else's thoughts), you'll know what was said, what was meant by what was said, and you'd not show yourself to be a fool that can be led by the nose.

I know. Again, she was talking about the WSJ, the NYT, the LAT, etc. She wasn't talking about the local weekly or anything like that. Any person with a lick of sense knew what she meant.

It was a dumber question. I thought the answer was fine because I knew what she meant. If the answer to that question is what anyone is concerning them, they're much more shallow than they would care to admit.

Here is the transcript of the Q-and-A in question:

Katie Couric: And when it comes to establishing your worldview, I was curious: what newspapers and magazines did you regularly read before you were tapped for this to stay informed and to understand the world?

Sarah Palin: I've read most of them, again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media.

KC: But, like, what ones specifically? I'm curious.

SP: All of 'em, any of 'em that have been in front of me over all these years.

KC: Can you name a few?

SP: I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news too. Alaska isn't a foreign country, where, it's kind of suggested and it seems like, 'Wow, how could you keep in touch with what the rest of Washington, D.C. may be thinking and doing when you live up there in Alaska?' Believe me, Alaska is like a microcosm of America.

Anyone who honestly believes this woman is a viable candidate is either terribly gullible or completely stupid.

Said she's a mouthpiece for others' thoughts and that she not only had a reputation for being an idiot but his direct impression of her and her family was that she was a beauty queen with all looks, no business experience and no brain.

Honestly, I gave her a fair shot. Voted for McCain. Have voted R since starting to vote 3-4 elections ago. This country doesn't need another puppet.

And no, I haven't heard her give a specific plan or new idea to reducing the deficit, solving medicare or saving SS. Saying you will do it versus actually having a plan to do so are two different things.

BOTH sides have royally screwed the pooch in ALL three of these issues and the latter two for several decades. No more time for double-speak and puppets - time for some who is actually a leader. We need someone who is going to stand up and tell EVERYONE it is time for EVERYONE to sacrifice to get this country out of the hole we've dug.

I love Palin's conservative values; I think she's a nice enough person...I just don't think she has the mental toughness or capacity to be President. You can say what you want to say about Couric asking fair questions in that interview, but she screwed up some answers to some Sr. High-level questions and I just feel she's as dumb as a box of rocks.

To be fair though, Palin was probably caught off guard by such a tricky question.

I mean, how exactly is someone supposed to answer a question like that?

She could either say; she gets all her news from Fox news, and then no one would take her seriously; or else she can say that she gets her news anywhere other than Fox news, and again, no one would take her seriously.

That tricky tricky Katie Couric. She is one of the hardest interviewers in the game.

If you wanted to be politically savvy and concise you would list a few sources that ranged appeals.

If you wanted to appear to be anything other than a deer in headlights, you would name anything.

And when I look at that quote, I'm more interested in the stupid little asides such as

"...again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media."

What the hell does that even mean? To begin with, doesn't she constantly rip the press? Beyond that, that's really all this woman ever produces - ramblings that don't have anything to do with anything or nods to a broad ideology.

And you think that's a bad answer? So, what newspapers and magazines do you read regularly? Just curious.

She picks up whatever newspaper or magazine that is in front of her. I think we all do that.

It wasn't necessarily a great answer but it's not really anything to speculate about her intelligence.

The question, itself, is an odd one. Seems to me that she was defending her state against charges of being the 'back woods' and 'unsophisticated'. Those were, after all, some of the charges. She was the governor of a state with such a small population, her critics said. She was the mayor from a small town, her critics said. They continue to say it. I wonder how many of them have been mayor of any town. How many of them have been governor of a state? I wonder how many of them actually can manage their household budgets.

Unequivocally.

She comes across looking like a blathering idiot who is woefully uninformed. Given all we've heard from her since, I don't think that's an unfair characterization.

Quote:

For no reason.

She was asked what newspapers or magazines she read, and her answer somehow led to defending Alaska from being backwoods. That accusation was never there.

I don't necessarily think it's a bad question, considering that Palin initially came across as (and later proved to be) a fairly uninformed and empty candidate.

Palin has been eviscerated for public speaking foul ups. If any republican had said the following, they would have been Quayled out of contention or office. Guess who said them? Why aren't there SNL skits and a media blitz proclaiming the stupidity of these gaffs?

"The Middle East is obviously an issue that has plagued the region for centuries."

"The reforms we seek would bring greater competition, choice, savings and inefficiencies to our health care system."

"It was also interesting to see that political interaction in Europe is not that different from the United States Senate. There's a lot of -- I don't know what the term is in Austrian, wheeling and dealing."

"No, no. I have been practicing...I bowled a 129. It's like -- it was like Special Olympics, or something."

"Let me be absolutely clear. Israel is a strong friend of Israel's. It will be a strong friend of Israel's under a McCain...administration. It will be a strong friend of Israel's under an Obama administration. So that policy is not going to change."

"On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes -- and I see many of them in the audience here today -- our sense of patriotism is particularly strong."

"I've now been in 57 states -- I think one left to go."

"In case you missed it, this week, there was a tragedy in Kansas. Ten thousand people died -- an entire town destroyed."

Point taken. Outside of maybe the 57 states quote, I'll bet the vast majority of Americans wouldn't be able to associate these quotes to Obama.....but comments like "I can see Russia from my house", "Potatoe", and "Nucular" have created poster children for ignorance.

Those three (Palin, Quayle, Bush) are in a different league than Obama in that regard.

I don't think Obama's really that bright of a guy at all. He reminds me a lot of Reagan -- a puppet that knows how to deliver the lines.

But those three are/were gaffe factories that pretty much embarrassed themselves every other time they opened their mouths. Obama doesn't come close to their ratios.

He usually speaks very eloquently, is maybe a tad below average on his feet, and can speak to the issues. That and an Ivy League degree or two is more than enough to get you perceived as intelligent in Washington D.C., whether it's true or not.

In the end, I don't think intelligence plays much of a role -- in our government, once you find yourself at the levels of the people we're talking about, your brain's been left at the door.

To think that he foisted Joe Biden upon us as our VP.

Bidenisms Dan Quayle and Sarah Palin are laughing at him.

Of course, there's Obama's own (and numerous) gaffes. To be fair, he's catching up with Bush, who had 8 years of them and Obama has only had two.

I never heard or saw this one .....

That sounds like something someone would try to attribute to Bush.

I've heard most if not all of those quotes in media.

I've heard many of them on the #1-5 highest rated radio talk shows, as well as the highest rated cable news network, at several points throughout the day, and I've also heard a few on high-ranking late night talk shows.

Of course you have. I know a lot of liberals/democrats and when I bring up these quotes many think they're made up, exaggerations or taken out of context.

With Pallin though it is not just one line here and there it is entire interviews. Forget Katie asking her what she reads, there are plenty more interviews like one with Charles Gibson that was a train wreck.

She was trying to string McCain talking points together and it was a god awful segment. She had another interview with Katie where she contended that when Putin speaks where do we think his voice goes first? Why over the air of Alaska. It was an absurd interview.

I stated before about her rambling resignation speech, her interview in front of a chicken getting slaughtered that makes her--like it or not--more of a laugh factory than a credible politician.

Again, as I said before, I think she is a decent lady but she doesn't know how to properly handle herself to say nothing of the fact that McCains people totally unprepared her.

Why are you so hung up on Palin?

There's plenty of reasons to dislike the woman.

Off the top of my head.....

- As Governor, she attempted to get her sisters ex-husband fired after their marriage fell through.

- She wants to be taken seriously as a presidential candidate but goes on TV like she's a political reporter, offering an opinion on things she knows little to nothing about. She lobbied to go on SNL, wrote a book, etc. etc. If she's an entertainer, have at it but she's just leveraged her moment in the sun in to what amounts to a pop culture career. How she even thinks those decisions will lead to a worthwhile political career is beyond me.

- She tries to be "Miss America" but knows little about America's history, as she's proven several times.

- She's in favor of removing evolutionary teachings in schools and also backs getting rid of sex education programs in favor of abstinence only education.

- She bashes an inclusive health care system but admits to taking her children to Canada for medical care.....who wait for it, has socialized healthcare.

I just never got what the draw was with Palin. She brought little to nothing to the political table.
