Toronto couple defend move to keep baby's sex secret


A Toronto couple are defending their decision to keep their infant's sex a secret in order to allow the child to develop his or her own gender identity.

Kathy Witterick and David Stocker have been widely criticised for imposing their ideology on four-month-old Storm.

The family were the subject of a recent profile in the Toronto Star newspaper.

In an e-mail, Ms Witterick wrote that the idea that "the whole world must know what is between the baby's legs is unhealthy, unsafe, and voyeuristic".

Ms Witterick, 38, and Mr Stocker, 39, have also been criticised for the manner in which they are raising their two sons Jazz, five, and Kio, two.

The boys are encouraged to choose their own clothing and hairstyles - even if that means wearing girls' clothes - and to challenge gender norms. Jazz wears his hair in long braids, and the boys are "almost exclusively assumed to be girls," Mr Stocker told the Toronto Star.

The child's grandparents do not know Storm's sex, the Toronto Star reported, and have grown weary of explaining the situation, but are supportive.

In an e-mail to the Associated Press news agency, Ms Witterick, a stay-at-home mother, said a four-month-old infant was still learning to recognise him or herself, and said it was inappropriate to impose a gender identity on the child.

I agree... I think it's stupid and just hope that this doesn't cause the children undo harm... I don't know if it will but just pray it doesn't... kids have enough to worry about no a-days... they don't need to worry if mom and dad think they are a boy or a girl.

I find it comical/disturbing that people embrace this line of parental thinking in stark contrast to generation after generation of gender identification whereby there is no detriment to a child being identified as male or female. Generation after generation grew up well adjusted but these parents know better.

So if the child is a male but chooses to be a "female" what restroom will he use in grade school or high school. There is no way in hell I would him using the same as my daughter if I had a daughter.


The other thing is, all these new parental techniques are supposed to raise better kids and they think they are but truly, the kids being raised today are a far cry from my generation and the ones prior to. We are getting worse as a society not better.

Just an general reply ...

From a neurological point of view, these kids are going to be paying for it later on in life. Depending on the child, how you take care of and treat your children has certain ramifications later on down the road. There's a ton of evidence out there stating the problems that come from lack of a gender identity and what happens to the unfortunate people who encounter it. It's amazing that the state won't step in for these kids. They can still be saved at this point. When they reach the age that their thoughts turn towards understanding themselves though ... watch out mom and dad.
