This morning at 11:25am my dog of 18 years (who I have had since my 5th birthday) was put down. He had some real bad cancer in his back end. Since he was my dog for so long, and my first pet, I've taken it real hard.

Sorry to hear. I'd be heartbroken if I would ever lose my dog. 18 years is quite a long time for a dog. Must have been pretty happy being around ya to live for that long.

Yea, the good thing is we called a vet that did house calls. So, he came to the house to put him down. My dog (Poe) was always afraid of going to the vet and doing it at home was a familiar place where he would be comfortable. So, we arranged a time when I was home to make sure things went alright. My mother knows the vet that did it personally and they took his body to a local mortuary to get cremated, we are going to bury his ashes at a spot that he loved laying at.

Sorry to hear about that.

When i was 11 my Dog passed, he was 13.

It sucks. I know its cliche, but, at least he isnt suffering anymore.

Charlie, that's tough. I am in a similar situation - my cocker spaniel is now 13 and is my first dog. I know she's getting older and in the back of your mind, you just know it's coming. I have no idea how this will affect me.

I feel your pain and wish you the best. I've heard different stories on people quickly replacing the pet and others saying to wait, so just do what's best for you and what your heart is telling you. I don't see how I could ever 'replace' my baby, but at the same time, I can see how having a new one could help lift your spirits.

Take care Charlie.

18 years is a a good long life for a dog. Sorry about your loss, though; I, and many others on here, know what it's like.
Sounds like he had a nice peaceful exit, for lack of a better word.
It will get better with time and you'll never forget him.

We still have 3 Chihuahuas. They know what's happened to him. They've been acting real .. different since he died and one of them was crying a lot yesterday.

Well man....it is never easy having to say bye to one of your buds. I had to put down my two year old chocolate lab due to a rare congenital diseas a few years back and it almost killed me.

I am not the sappy sort but a good friend sent me this and it is a good way to think about losing your friend.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
