Dispatch Article Browns sign Steinbach to solidify offensive line Saturday, March 03, 2007 James Walker THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH FILE PHOTO The Browns and former Bengals guard Eric Steinbach have agreed on a seven-year deal. CLEVELAND — The Browns wasted no time securing a top offensive lineman on the first day of free agency. Cleveland and former Cincinnati Bengals guard Eric Steinbach agreed to a seven-year deal last night. Figures of the contract were not available, but Steinbach was seeking a deal close to Minnesota Vikings guard Steve Hutchinson’s $49 million contract from last season. Steinbach was one of the most soughtafter players on the free-agent market, and the move instantly strengthens the Browns’ biggest weakness on the offensive line last season. The Browns (4-12) were ranked 31 st in total offense and 31 st in rushing. Steinbach was on the Browns’ radar before the 2003 NFL draft, but they passed him over for center Jeff Faine in the first round. It was a decision they later regretted. Steinbach, 26, will be the highest paid lineman on the team. He started 62 games for the Bengals the past four seasons. Line overhaul The Browns are not stopping with Steinbach in their attempt to overhaul the offensive line. Former Miami Dolphins center/guard Seth McKinney also visited the team, said a league source. He started 29 games for the Dolphins from 2004 to 2005 before a back injury caused him to miss last season. He will try to make a comeback this year as a free agent, but first needs to pass his physicals. In addition, the Browns have expressed preliminary interest in veteran guard Adam Timmerman, his agent, Mark Bartelstein, said. Timmerman was released by the St. Louis Rams this week. Bartelstein also represents former San Diego Chargers guard Kris Dielman, who expects to visit Cleveland this weekend. "We haven’t set anything up yet, but I’m sure he will be in the next day or two if everything goes according to plan," Bartelstein said. Porter a Brown ? The Browns are one of many teams that have contacted the representatives of linebacker Joey Porter, who was cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Porter became the face of the Steelers defense and one of the most hated players by the rival Browns in recent years. But Porter’s agent, Jeffrey Sperbeck, didn’t rule out Cleveland as a possible destination. "Yes, he would consider the Browns," Sperbeck said. "He’s going to consider every option at this point. There’s no reason for us to not consider them with their tradition, and he knows them well. But there’s other teams in the division that are also interested in him as well." Fraley signed The Browns resigned center Hank Fraley late Thursday night to a four-year deal worth about $9 million. Fraley started all 16 games last season and is expected to start again because LeCharles Bentley likely will have additional knee surgery. jwalker@dispatch.com Dielman still expected to visit this weekend. Wow. His offer should be easy to peg since it should be between Steinbach's and Dockery's, and there's not much room in there. I though Dockery would be an economical choice as a 2nd guard We sign Dielman then no need for a guard in the 2nd round, we'd have 2 signed for 7 years.
We woulda broken the bank for Clements, but SF broke 2 banks. They can have him, more we can spend elsewhere.

From the browns official site: Quote:
Browns sign Steinbach Zac Jackson, Staff Writer 03.03.2007 The Browns first foray into free agency brought them a big-ticket item: Eric Steinbach has signed a seven-year contract.
The team announced the deal on Saturday morning, less than 48 hours after the NFL's free agency period officially opened.
Steinbach is listed at 6-foot-6, 290, and turns 27 next month. He's been a four-year starter at left guard for the high-powered Bengals offense, though he's also subbed at left tackle and is thought to be versatile enough to play any of the five line positions.
That's one reason he was regarded as one of the top available free agents at any position.
"Our hopes going into free agency included adding one of the significant linemen available in this year's class," said Browns Senior Vice President and General Manager, Phil Savage. "Eric (Steinbach) was our choice because of his versatility, durability, talent and background."
"Eric (Steinbach) is a versatile lineman," said Browns Head Coach Romeo Crennel. "We played against him twice a year and are well aware of his abilities and were impressed with what we saw. He will be a good addition to our team."
Steinbach is an athletic lineman who learned the guard position on the fly at the University of Iowa. The Bengals got what might have been the steal of the draft when he fell out of the first round in 2002; they selected him at 33, the first pick of the second round.
He's started 62 of 63 games since, twice being named a Pro Bowl alternate.
The Browns will have a media availbility with Steinbach on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Berea - which can be watched live on ClevelandBrowns.com.
Wow, a second round pick getting that much loot,, isn't it a great world

Yeah, I heard about Dielman's scheduled visit on Sirius NFL Radio yesterday but Adam Schein and Solomon Wilcots were saying that Seattle would be stupid to let him leave the building. I think he is scheduled to visit us today. But do we even have enough $$ to still sign him??

Okay, this suggests we will not be signing Dielman too. That would be crazy... but in a good kinda way.

I've seen alot of talk about cap money and yes it's something we need to think about, but other teams pay people good money to work things out to get contract under the cap, if Indy can get manning, harrison, freeney, ect under there cap we need to have our cap people do the same, instead of replacing yelling replace the head coach or GM every year, maybe we should be yelling to replace the cap man....your smart figure it out...

That would be Trip McCracken. I'd say he's done a decent job getting players the deals they want to be part of this organization and still keeping us in top cap shape year after year. Besides, how can you get rid of marquee name like that?

GO GET JOEY PORTER.
Wanna make noise in this division? Nothing will be better than Wimbley and Porter terrorizing backfields next season (well, aside from Adalius Thomas, but I think Porter comes at a SLIGHTLY smaller price tag).
It makes the Pittsburgh rivalry that much more intense.

I only want Porter if the price is right.
If he wants to be overpaid, I hope we stay away from him.

porter is all talk and no production. 3 of his 7 sacks came against us and our horrible offensive liine, i believe the others were against bad teams as well. if he came cheaply ok, but not worth more than 2.5mil a year imo

Bro, what if we sign Dielman this weekend?? I was thinking about this last night, and that all but seals the deal that Steiner's going to be our LT for the next 5 years, and Dielman at LG..............cause they neither one are effective RGs imo. That pretty much seals the deal that JT isn't going to be a Brown. I am one of the few who think ES would be a top 10 LT if he played there every down, and I am okay putting him there, but damn I hate to pretty much eliminate a guy who I think will be perhaps THE top LT in the next 5 years from our draft board.........still our line would look like this..............
LT...........ES LG..........KD C............HF(unless La comes back) RG.........Druzzi/rookie RT.........Shaffer
Bro that's actually not a bad line if we get a Blaylock in the 2nd round, or if Bentley comes back and plays RG. We would actually have a decent pocket for a freakin' change. I still hope we get Joe and go something like this......
LT..........JT LG.........ES C...........Fraley (until La gets back) RG........Druzzi (if we go Joe we won't pick another 1 in rnd 2.....we go DL) RT.........KS
Lots of options, man I hope we are making correct LONG term decisions this off season..........cause eventually the $$$$ of a FA line will catch up to us

Porter and Winslow on the same team after last year's action between the two, this will be interesting.

Here's the thing about Dielman..both he and Steinbach play LG..we need a road grater at RG..not A FINESSE player..but a mauling force..I don't think Dielman is that, so I would not expect him to be signed..I expect a lower tier OG to ge brought then , that paves the way to draft a powerhouse.

Deihlman may play LG but he's not a finesse player...he's a run blocking grater all the way.

Porter only if the price is right, he is old and rumor is he has lost a step. He is an intense leader though which I love on defense, so if the price is right I would talk to him. I don't understand why people say Steinbach will play LT. He is a good guard, so why move him to LT?? If anything keep schaffer there, having a good guard will help him out. I still say we draft Joe Thomas, that is unless we do intend to sign deilman and move steiny to either LT or RG.....too many senarios making my head spin......if we do sign deilman, I would be surprised, and shocked, and wonderfully delighted.

I say stay away from players who's team willingly let's them walk without trying hard or at all to get a deal done...to me that speaks volumes.
Target the guys who's teams really want to keep them but can't due to salary cap reasons, etc.
I'm tired of signing guys that don't help much once the season gets under way.

Maybe a replacement for McKinnley or just depth at DE. I looked up his name at NFL.com
# 93 Kenyon Coleman Position: DE Height: 6-5 Weight: 295 Born: 04/10/1979 College: UCLA NFL Experience: 6
He played in 16 games last year and had 25 tackles and 4 sacks. Hasnt played much before last year. Probabley just depth at d-line and maybe he plays specail teams.

CO-SIGN! Timmerman is 35 and McKinney's kinda fragile (seems like he's been hurt every damn year!)

Right...I like the idea of Timmermann as stop gap RG and drafting Beekman or Ramirez in the 3rd, that would "free up" our 2nd rounder for CB or DL help....

I like the idea of a veteran for a year in order to keep a 1st day guard from being forced to start.
Timmerman still has game. Most around the league believe it and so do I. He isn't elite like he once was, but even though he's a health risk at this point in the game, he's still a pretty solid player when he stays on the field.
McKinney has traditionally been a center, but played some guard. I don't know how I feel about him as a starter, but he'd be great depth. He started all 16 games in '04, 13 games while playing in 16 games in '05, but missed all last year with a cranky back. That injury makes him a big risk.

I like the idea of Timmerman as our RG for this year, becasue it lets us go and get another 3rd round OG, and both he and Sowells have another year to learn the ropes..............and like somebody else said it gives us the luxary of being able to go DL in round 2, and we need some young blood that could provide a much needed boost to that unit. I only want Seth as a backup to Fraley.
