Indians with a big win today.
Mets lead the Tigers 5-0 in the 3rd. If that holds up the Tribe is back into a 1st place tie.

Hopefully the bats can get going again, but Carrassco has been so good. This team's pitching has been so good, both starters and bullpen (minus Fausto)
the one thing i think we can all hope for is that the trend of the indians playing well after the break keeps up this year. i don't know if that trend matters this year as most years it's been because they were pretty much out of it and the pressure was off as they went into spoiler mode.
Honestly, I think Detroit is probably the better team, but I think they aren't that much better and I expect the Tribe to battle it out for the whole year. The one team that has surprised me is the White Sox, they are better now, but they still aren't great and I expected them to be a serious factor and thus far they haven't really been (Other than owning us)

Outside of verlander, we matchup very well with detroit. I still believe we need at least 1 bat, and a starting pitcher. If Alex White didn't get hurt, I would be very confident in our rotation. I tell you what, if we could mustard some offense we could make some noise in the postseason. Our bullpen is still lights out, and if we could get 6 innings out of our starters, we could beat a team or two in the postseason.

We probably need another bat in the outfield, one more starting pitcher and no more NL away games so we can get Hafner back in the game for 4-5 AB's per game.
Oh ya...Detroit got blown out by the Mets again. We're in sole possession of first again (by 1 percentage point).

the Phillies offense hasn't been spectacular either. so, why not. honestly, I thought the Giants had absolutely no shot last year in the playoffs without any offense. in baseball, sometimes you just get hot enough at the plate. i mean, by talent, the Indians are probably around the 20th best team right now. but, that doesn't always matter.
either way, just getting to the playoffs and getting these youngsters experience and confidence in a pennant race and the October stage should be seen as a win.

Plus, who knows what wil happen with guys like Alex White, Fausto Carmona, Cord Phelps, Lonnie Chisenhall .... and maybe guys like Jeanmare Gomez, Nick Hagadone, Jason Donald, Jason Kipnis, Ezequiel Carrera, Jerad head, and even a guy like Tim Ferdoff might all be potential Indians by the end of the year.
Actually, looking at that list makes me really excited about the future .... or maybe even later this season.
Plus ..... we just might make a move .... who knows?
Actually, it wouldn't surprise me if the Tribe makes a move that ships someone like Sizemore out while he still has minimal value. (if they can) He has clearly declined, and who knows whether the start he had was the truth, or whether it was a mirage and we're seeing the new norm now?

Noone is going to give us anything for Fausto or Grady. Maybe a very low level prospect. Sadly, they are both at the lowest point of their value (we hope it doesn't go any lower at least). Bad time to try to trade either.
I think Fausto can recover and end up being like Liriano for the Twins. Great some starts, absolutely terrible others. I also think it's more likely he recovers on another team (just to clear his head out). Sadly, I'm not expecting anything much in return for him at this point.

Hell, we got Carlos Santana for Casey Blake. We got Carera for Russel Branyon. One thing our organization seems to be very good at is finding talent at the Minor League level.

and I can point to a bunch of trades where we got little back. yes, we have had success in trades, but also realize we were sellers for those trades.
in a market where we are buyers and we 'sell' a veteran, I suspect that will make other teams pretty wary about giving us anything in return.
now, if we wait until the offseason and fish out some deals, then sure we might be able to get a low-level prospect who may or may not turn out okay.

It seems like other teams would be on to us by now though. lol We seem to have done pretty damn well in trades for minor leaguers.

I think Seattle may refuse to trade with us now though
Have to go back to the Dodger-well. Since they are in dire financial straits; maybe we can take a vet (would LOVE an Eithier rental) and a minor leaguer for a guy like Phelps they can control for a few years.
(and to others, yes I realize it isn't likely. at all. and yes, we do have the $$ in the budget this year to add salary)

Well, the Battle of Ohio Part Deux has begun ...... and it appears to have picked up where it left off. 8-2 Good Guys in game one of the weekend series. Justin Masterson with another gem on the mound. Nice way to start the weekend.

Congrats, that was a trip to the woodshed. Yes, it was a good way for you to start the weekend and maybe by year's end it will lead to something that hasn't happened since 1948. Or not.

It's already been a better year than most would have predicted for us ...... so I'm happy being in a race. (and in first)
Considering the injuries we've had, and the "big guns" misfiring for a good part of the year ... that's not too bad.

I have a feeling that he's gonna be OK today.
No reason why ...... but I just have a feeling.
I'm just glad that we gave Masterson a little offensive help out there. He could have sued for non-support in his last 6 or so starts.
Kinda funny game, baseball. In Masterson's last 11 starts, the Indians scored a total of 22 runs. (with being shut out twice) Then today he gets a laugher .... for lack of a better term.
Hopefully that means that the team will start hitting a little bit while he's on the mound.
It looks like Santana, Buck, and Orlando Cabrera are starting to all hit again ... and along with Chisenhall starting off strong, that helps.

In his last 9 starts, Carmona is 2-7. In that period, he has alternated decent starts with very bad starts: ( http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7603 ). Unfortunately, he's due for another turd. Homer Bailey, on the other hand, was pretty tough in a 2-1 loss to the Featherheads in May - giving up only 4 hits in 7 IP. That said, we did bang him around pretty good in the past.

I hate the fact that AL pitchers don't have to hit any time in their career ....... except when they play in an NL park. It's idiotic. They don't know how to hit, they don't know how to run the bases properly, and it can cause injury .... which it did today .... and did last year to another pitcher IIRC.

Then they should complain and get the madness stopped. And, I would be interested in the stats of how many AL pitchers have been hurt during interleague play running the bases v. regular players.

Last year Clay Buckholz got hurt running from 1st to 2nd. The Yankee's Chin Ming ... got hurt a couple of years ago running the bases and was lost for most of the rest of the year. He hurt his foot and never recovered, and is out of the game today.
That's a quick look.

A quick look? At what? I was curious about stats....not pitchers you remember being hurt because they don't know how to run. But, thanks for trying. I'll look them up myself if I care enough.

Sorry for not making it more clear...
I'm interested to know how many non-hitting pitchers have been hurt running bases versus regular players. Is it a higher percentage, for example?

That's GOT to be the LAMEST argument yet against the DH. Baseball has nine guys on a team that are supposed to play the field and bat at the plate. That's how the game was designed, that's how the NL still plays it. Sorry Ytown that the AL is full of wusses.

The truth hurts!
I am only able to listen on the radio today, so did not see the man hurt himself running, that must of been hilarious to see.
I never wish to see anyone get hurt, but seems he could be a bit out of shape to be a starting pitcher.
GO REDLEGS!

baseball is boring enough as it is, don't make it any more boring by letting the pitcher bat. That's the only argument I need for myself.
I don't want to see a pitcher go up there and either never let the bat leave his shoulder, or swing like a girl.
And I mean, so what if a guy who is DH'ing goes and sits down after his at-bat, it's not like these guys are winded from doing anything in the field. The pitcher and catcher are the only ones laboring out there.

Who ..... besides the NL ... still has their pitchers hit? College? No. The AL? No. Minor Leaguers in any NL or AL/NL Minor League game? No. Japan does ..... Yea. BFD. The DH is here to stay, and it's time to have the rule applied consistently throughout the leagues. Glad to see Phillips strike out with the bases loaded to keep it 3-0. (especially after the home plate umpire gave the Reds and extra strike to Renteria)

Joe Smith is pretty damn good though.
The Reds only loaded the bases because of a blown strike call by the home plate umpire anyway ... so I wouldn't sweat it too much.
