Ellis is 6'3" ... so he'd be a short combo Guard type at best. I don't like him at SG at all. I would rather limp through next season with Eyenga at SG and take another year's worth of lumps to get a lottery, impact player at SG/SF than to try and bandaid the position with a guy who may not fit.

Just my ever so humble opinion.

first, Speights is 6'10, but definitely a center. it's the only position he really played for the 76ers as he's sort of a wide-body. and I think they gave up on him too early (he's only 23 and has shown some glimpses of being capable).

looking at the roster (see a few posts up), the problem is that we can't even limp through the season with Eyenga at SG. Eyenga is our only guy at SF, which means we almost have to go Baron at SG.

I don't mind limping through next season, but I am just looking at ways to have more defined roles so that players are completely forced out of position that will limit how much they can grow, which is important.

another option might be to offer the Thunder Gibson for Sefalosha. Thabo is as bad at offense as Gibson is at defense, but he did start for the Thunder last year (until the playoffs).

we could use his defense at SG and with Harden emerging, the Thunder might prefer to have a scoring punch off the bench like Gibson. I actually think that one could help both teams.

How many guys on our team were born in America?

Irving was born in Australia. Tristan was born in Canada.

So only 1 of the top 7 drafted players was born in the US.

I think the thing I like the most is that we got the point guard first.

It'll be his team, his offense, and it will be run by him through coach scott.

So hopefully we can get that really good 2/3 player who can be your primary scorer, and hopefully with the pg already there, you can plug that guy in, and get him to play off the ball right away as a rookie instead of him maybe developing bad habits early on.

One thing Ellis can do is score in droves, something the Cavs desperately need. If we can't get a bonafide scorer, Irving is going to be forced to become a shoot-first PG, and that's no good.

Quick question

Does a stat line of 13 points and 10 rebounds earn a guy being picked 3rd in a draft?

I am not referring to Thomspon, I will explain.

Ellis at SG, to me, looks like an improved version of Gibson. Maybe he's better than that ...... but is he the answer at SG? He would have to be, because with the new CBA on the horizon, we can't afford big, costly mistakes. Also, I would not want to give up Varejao, as was proposed, to get him. We are not deep at C. We have a developmental guy in Erden, but one of the biggest reasons we sucked so badly last year was that we lost players like Varejao and Jamison, and had no size left up front except for Hickson. I really hope that we can develop Erden so that we can go back to having Varejao come off the bench where he was so incredibly effective.

I dunno ..... if we could get Ellis for a couple of picks, and the trade exception, then I might say go for it. I certainly would not want to give up one of our primary pieces for him though.

If we could get Ellis and not lose anything other than a 2nd rounder and the exception, why not?

If we could do that ... then I would probably say go for it. He still better fit though, because he is signed through 2014.

It would be kind funn though if he came here as he was the guy who replaced Baron Davis for Golden State.

We have a glut of PFs, and I hate Andy at the 5, so I might consider giving him up if we had some sort of plan to get a legit big in here.

Don't forget that Ellis was 8th in scoring in the NBA last year, and shot something like 46% from the field. He was behind Durant, LeBron, Wade, D-Rose, Kobe, Melo and Amar'e. That company isn't too shabby. Just keep him away from the mopeds if he comes here.

I was wondering because I want to know if Al Horford is a bust. His stats suck and he plays out of position.

Also if the Clippers play their cards right, they should be the best team in the league in a few years. Potential NBA superstar with tons of good young pieces around him and about $25 million in cap room for 2012 if they re-sign DeAndre Jordan? You really can't screw that up unless if you have Donald Sterling as your owner or have David Kahn as your GM. Unfortunately for them

That's where I see us in a couple of years.

We're going to have extra picks in almost every one of the next 4 or 5 drafts. We have a couple of expiring contracts that might help us. If the 2 guys we drafted yesterday become what we hope they will, then we have a pair of young building blocks. We have youth everywhere except for Davis and Jamison ..... and those guys can possibly be turned into additional help. We have a developmental 7 footer in Erden. If things work out, we could have a talented 3some .... maybe not Heat level .... but really solid plus type players .... then we add in a star level player in next year's draft, plus having a pair of picks in the 2nd .... man I am psyched about our future.

Don't get too excited, all of those picks are either late first round or second round. The NBA draft is 2 rounds for a reason. There's only 5 positions you need to worry about. The NFL draft is 7 rounds ... so you have to figure the first third of the picks is like round 1, the last third is like round three, and the 2nd round of the NBA draft is like rounds 4, 5, 6, and 7 of the NFL draft.

So we essentially have a two 3rd rounders from Miami ... and a couple of 5th and 6th rounders from Orlando and New Orleans.

Extra picks are extra picks.

Every year it seem slike there is a guy out of the 2nd round who helps his team a gret deal.

Here's a guy who went undrafted ...... and the Cavaliers may be interested ..

We definitely need help at SG.

Cleveland Cavaliers among teams that have contacted OSU's David Lighty, agent says
Published: Friday, June 24, 2011, 6:21 PM Updated: Friday, June 24, 2011, 6:21 PM

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cavaliers are among five teams that have expressed an interest in native Clevelander and Ohio State senior guard David Lighty, who was not selected in Thursday's NBA draft.
Lighty's agent, Joel Bell, said his client is set to visit Atlanta and Phoenix, while New Orleans, Cleveland and San Antonio have been in contact.

Lighty (6-6) was projected as a second-round pick. Bell said several teams with various roster issues talked to Lighty late in the two-round draft about playing a year overseas after being drafted, and Lighty declined.

"Why go overseas and limit yourself to one team?" Bell said.

Complicating matters is the fact the NBA's collective bargaining agreement is set to expire next week and free agents cannot sign contracts. Until the lockout begins, Lighty will try to find a tentative match.

"We're going to visit these teams and get as much of a feel as possible on how much interest there is going to be post-lockout, and make an intelligent decision," said Bell, who is based in suburban Washington, D.C.

Following the draft, Lighty tweeted, "U will see me in the NBA I promise you that..." He followed up with a nod to his hometown team and fans angry the Cavs did not take him, saying in a tweet, "And everybody stop being mad at the Cavs, lol, they did what they felt was best for the franchise, got to respect that."

"He's doing incredibly well," Bell said. "Some kids you'd be picking up off the floor after not being drafted. Not David Lighty."

Lighty would make me very happy. As good as next years draft class will be. I would easily give up a lottery pick in that draft if it meant we could get Andre Drummond in 2013. He will be a monster in the league. He's ALREADY bigger then Amare with longer arms. They're saying they think he could very easily end up being over 7ft by the time he hits the NBA. His weight is not far off Howard NOW --- this kid is THE scariest prospect.

This is a good draft prospect stat site btw

Source tells WFNY that Ryan Hollins has picked up his $2.5mm player option and will be with the #Cavs next season.

Hollins picked up option before draft; was not going to gamble with CBA regardless of potential for #Cavs to select a center.

Oh Kahn...

He drafted a guy from Qatar who was five years older than they thought he was (26 as opposed to 21), and therefore wasn't even eligible for the draft. They didn't even know his real name.

I feel bad for Kahn but he makes some really dumb decisions.

Also FYI the Olympic baksetball team is allowed to practice together. I believe they're under a different set of guidelines. The games they play will be the last bit of serious basketball we watch and discuss for awhile.

Sorry if I'm repeating anything, but while I was staining my deck yesterday, I was listening to WKNR. The guy on there made me feel a lot better about this draft. We already knew we got the best player in Irving. But his point was this was a pretty weak draft, and we shouldn't have made moves just to make moves.

Yeah, we probably could trade and get Iguodala or someone else, but do we really want to do that? We're not going to be good next year anyways, so the only type of talent we should be getting is young talent. Let those guys play together and grow together for a couple of years, then start bringing in vets, a la Oklahoma City. The worst possible scenario is to bring in vets now, have a mediocre season, then fall out of the lottery by getting the 7 or 8 seed.

Instead, maybe we win 25 games this year. Irving and Thompson/Hickson can develop some chemistry, and then we have a lottery pick in what should be a draft loaded with wing players next year.

Just had to get that out, b/c initially when they picked Thompson, I was not a happy camper.

Also, just a general question for anyone who might know: if the whole next season is lost to lockout, what happens to the draft next year? Do they keep this year's order? Do they even have it?

I believe that the non-lottery teams are seeded in the draft as they were this year. The lottery teams are given the same odds as they were in this year's lottery (ie Minny with the highest odds, Cavs with the second-highest, etc) and a lottery is held. Traded picks don't carry over, though, so we don't own the Clippers' first round pick. I've heard both sides...that this is indeed the way it would be held, and also that there's no precedent so this is merely speculation.

Thanks. Its a shame that this labor situation is happening, b/c that was the best playoffs I have seen in awhile (esp. in the western conf.). Also, I'm eager to see Irving play and develop in Scott's system.

I too am anxious to see how the Cavs do in year two of Byron Scott. My major fear (and one that's very legitimate, I believe) is that way too much pressure is going to be placed on Kyrie Irving because we have absolutely no scorers on the Cavs. A point guard needs scorers to thrive, and we don't have a single guy who can consistently score 15 points a night. If Irving becomes a shoot-first point guard then drafting him was a waste.

I think they would redo the lotto drawing, with every team having whatever picks they would have this year, so the Clippers would have the Wolves pick and the best chance of number one, we would have the second best chances but not the 8th best odds

Why would the Clippers have the Wolves' odds?? Because the Clippers' pick wound up being #1 overall this year and Minny had the best odds? That doesn't make much sense if you ask me.

i'm afraid we might be too good. not great enough to sniff championship contention, but good enough to be seeded 6-8.

I'm not the guy that roots against his team, but big picture, this franchise needs at least 2 more lottery selections to compete with the big boys.

Byron Scott's trend is that year 2 has been much kinder than year one. The Hornets were really really good in year 2, horrible in year 1. Same with NJ.

I think Kyrie will be fine, I think with having coach Scott in his ear, he's not gonna develop bad habits, and will have him trusting the system.

I really think we need a big man that can defend the rim and get some ugly baskets, and then you need that swingman/2 guard who can get you 20-25 a night. That's why we need the draft, otherwise it will be really tough to get that guy because FA won't really sign with the cavs, and to trade for one of those guys still in their prime is very very hard, and we don't exactly have a plethora of pieces.

It sucks for us that this draft didn't have one of those primary scorers (if you believe williams is, that's fine, but i don't) but at least we got our point guard, and also grabbed a guy who in my eyes is a bit of a project.

The Cavs will be more competitive and certainly in more games but they're still going to be a very inexperienced team at PG, SG and SF.

The win bump in year 1 with LeBron was what,18? There's absolutely no way the Cavs get a bigger bump than that in 2011-2012. These guys just aren't that kind of polarizing star.

Plus, the East is much stronger than it has been in the past. Chicago, Miami, Boston, Orlando, Atlanta and NYC are all playoff locks. That leaves 2 spots open and I really just don't see Cleveland being better than Indiana, Phili, Milwaukee or Charlotte.

If the Cavs get a 50% increase in wins, that puts them at 27, which is nowhere near the playoffs. It would still be one of the 5 worst records based on how teams finished this past season.

Just throwing this out there

Trade Anderson Varejao for Cole Aldrich and Byron Mullens. Saves us cap space now and in the future. We also get bodies at center. Andy plays for a contender. OKC gets a big man that helps them win now.

I guess Aldrich could become an upgrade, but I agree with you.

Also, would OKC really want AV and Perkins on the floor together? I'm guessing that would lead to some spacing issues.

best one that today's players could learn from:
