Dear Mr. Ballpeen:

Your recent lab was outstanding. You are no longer in the diabetic range! Keep up the good work.

Random Blood Glucose: 102
HgbA1C: 5.6

I know, this doesn't mean squat to most of you, but for this old fart, it is happy dance time!

Now, it's time to go for my 7 mile Sunday walk.

Congrats on your news.

Be careful though, happy dances can be dangerous to old farts!

Both.

I joined a website that allows you to track your calories and fitness minutes.

I joined almost 2 years ago.....7-28-09.

As of this morning my miles walked is at 831...285 so far this year. It will be 291 after I finish this morning walk, which will start in about a hour.

As for diet, you just cut back....few breads and pasta, lot's of veggies, few fats and fried food.

Thanks for all the comments which act as encouragement. I still have maybe 10-15 lbs I would like to shed and settle in and hold in the 178-180 range.

This is the first fat I added, so it's the last and hardest to drop, so I'll just keep on doing what I have been doing.

This isn't a race, it's a lifestyle, so even if it takes another year or more....so be it.

I also have to remember I have been lifting weights 2-3 days a week since the first of the year, so my lack of progress on the scale is showing up as progress in the mirror.....and lab work. I can't help but think I have transferred 5-6 lbs of blubber for 5-6 lbs of muscle....which is a good thing.

As a fellow diabetic I understand what those numbers mean,so let me say CONGRATS!!!

What you have done is my ultimate goal, I have lost about 30 lbs of fat weight and added about 15 lbs of lean muscle weight. My A1C went from 8.6 to 7.1. I still have a long ways to go but seeing that you have done it gives me inspiration.

Thanks

Good job King.....I was in that 8.6 range myself.

7.1 shows you and your Dr. have it under control. In time as you continue to lose weight and get your eating habits under control, you will see your A1C continue to drop.

A word of advice here....you are getting near the point where you have to continue to take your meds, but between eating better and getting more exercise you are going to experience episodes of low blood sugar.

Those suck. They come on rapidly and really drain your butt in a hurry. That happened to me a few times on the walking path and a few times had to call for a ride to get me back to my car.

Start to carry glucose tabs with you. They raise your blood sugar in a hurry but aren't as bad for you as would eating a Snicker Bar or some other quick source of sugar.

The problem with the meds is they actually work against your efforts to lose weight because when the sugar starts to drop....I caught mine in the 60's a few times....you are going to eat, and it isn't going to be a celery stick.

Once my Dr had me on the lowest dose possible, he told me to stop taking the meds if this continued to happen....and it did the next day, so I have been off the glucotrol for over a year now.

Just keep plugging away my man. This isn't a race and it isn't a diet. It's just the way guys like you and I have to live our life.

Enjoy!!

Many people think that Type II diabetes means that they are destined to have to take pills and have health problems the rest of their lives. Diet and exercise really do work. Good job Peen and I am hoping Damon is listening!!

Note to diabetics: You need to have your eyes dilated once a year so that any signs of blood vessel leakage can be found. You don't want to add blindness to your other health problems. I am an optometrist so I have seen plenty of this.

Note to skinny people with big "beer guts": Get your sugar checked and blood pressure checked. Belly fat is an early sign of glucose intolerance or pre-diabetes.

Absolutely, trust me I know this one. I have been through multiple laser surgeries and injections to stop the bloood vessel growth and earlier this year had to go in and have surgery to reattach a retina. Not fun at all.

Way to go Peen!

I myself have gone from 238 last January to 212 right now. I have an under active thyroid and am trying to conquer it with diet and exercise. (I hate taking pills even if it is some small synthroid pill)

Very inspirational keep it up!
