I am thinking of sending out an email to Connie Schultz about this....I mean, she's gotta be pleased; after all, she is all about women protecting their reproductive rights and killing their baby's....

gotta send that email....

Oh brother.

Good to know that if my child dies in their sleep, I'll go to prison cause I didn't report it within an hour.

Not for nothing, but they probably mean to report in within an hour of when discovery takes place.

Here's the thing, if she did report this within 1 hour, wouldn't it have made her look less guilty? What would this law actually accomplish?

I honestly don't know what happened ...... but I do know that no one could be rational if they found their child dead.

I imagine that people would react in all different kinds of ways, from denial, to trying to run away, to immediately calling an ambulance, to calling the police .... to going to their church immediately ..... to any number of other things.

Because someone reacts in a certain way immediately following the death of a child really doesn't mean a whole lot in my opinion.

So you're on a camping trip, deep in the woods and your kid gets mauled by a bear. Too bad, you didn't make the 24 hour deadline before you got somewhere with cell signal, or didn't have a cell phone or whatever. You're going down for the bears actions.

This one just isn't that well thought out just yet.

I'm quite sure there will be allowances for something like that. Besides, if my child was mauled by a bear, I would get to a ranger ASAP and I doubt that would take much longer than 24 hours.

My goodness Tulsa,, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that nobody would expect someone to:

1. Report an incident/death etc if they are unaware it has taken place

2. Report an incident within any time limit if it is impossible to do so due to unavailability of landlines, cell signals, telegraph, smoke signals etc.

Call me whatever, but it strikes me as being akin to passing a law that you must report closing the barn doors after the horses escape.... you have to do it just so that they know that someone knows that the horses are gone.

I haven't the foggiest what they hope to accomplish with it, but such is the case with most internet petitions - they're generally stupid and poorly thought out. Then again, so is most legislation

The reason Casey is getting off is because Caylee's body was found 6 months after her disappearance and evidence from DNA to Determining cause of death was not possible to attain.

Where as this law would not have prevented Caylee's death nor would it have made Casey report her daughters disappearance/death sooner it would mean Casey would be facing more jail time because of additional charges.

I didn't read the petition or click on the link but if a law is created I would assume that the law makers would put something in there so if your kid was mauled by a bear in a rural area with no cell service and it would be more than 24 hours until you reach a phone that this law would not apply to you. However if you did get home 24+ hours later and then proceeded to go about your life for 31 days, clubbing it up and participating in a hard body contest and then told police "oh yeah by the way my son was killed 31 days ago in the woods by a bear" then the law would apply to you.

Now you're trying to apply common sense but I think this latest verdict clearly shows it's not about common sense.

As I understand it from this case, much of the potential forensic evidence that could have been used to establish exactly what happened had eroded/disappeared/been rendered useless because she waited 31 days to tell authorities.. if nothing else, immediate notification provides some assurance that whatever evidence exists will be available and fresh...

Not to mention you could have eyewitness accounts.. for example if I'm driving down the road at night and I see an unfamiliar car parked beside a house in my neighborhood at 11:15 pm, a midsize blue sedan.. and the next day I find out that a child died in that house, I might be inclined to tell somebody.... 30 days later I'm probably not going to remember exactly when or where or even if I saw a car and I'm almost certainly not going to remember what time it was and what kind of car it was....

Plus, if notified within an hour (or asap) authorities would be able to test for alcohol or drugs in a persons system to see if they were high or intoxicated at the time which could influence a case... There is a reason you are not allowed to leave the scene of an accident in this country and then go to the police a week later and provide your statement...

And the last thing I can think of is this.. if somebody commits a crime or watches their baby die or finds them in the pool or whatever, they are going to be emotional, they are going to be in a panic, they are going to be scared... and they are far more likely to NOT have a real good lie established where they have collaborated with all of their friends on a story of where they were and all that so there is a much greater chance that you will be able to figure out who is telling the truth and who is not...

There are a bunch of ways in which immediate notification would help the authorities figure out the truth...

I have no clue as to why they wouldn't... but what I don't get is why there is a need for a law to require it within a specific time frame. Again - what is it that they are hoping that this would accomplish, aside from placating "the enraged masses" by making them thing something positive has been done?

If the parent had something to do with the disappearance either actively or by negligence..... which seems to be the case here.

Maybe the law needs to be reworded, it's probably not perfect but the law is not intended to catch the honest parent who is trying to do what is right by the child, the law is meant to catch the person who is trying to hide stuff or cover their own negligent arse...... so in thinking like a decent person and a good parent, like I would expect you to think, it is hard to imagine why somebody would wait but somebody just did and now it appears that nobody is going to be held responsible for whatever happened to this little girl...

Sorry but I don't think it's that big of a stretch as a point of discussion... one woman decides while pregnant that the child will be an inconvenience and aborts it, the other doesn't reach that conclusion until a couple years later... I will agree it's not a perfect comparison but the mindset behind both is the same.... Except one is considered a choice and the other is considered barbaric.

I would argue that one is deciding to abort what would become a child.

And since it came up ... Casey Anthony should have had an abortion, IMO.

If she had, she could've still been running around getting loaded, getting crappy tattoos and living the trailer park queen life she so desired.

It would've been a much better scenario for all involved.

and as has been said in every like thread: not everyone agrees on when life begins. for those that believe life begins at conception, there is not a difference (or much of a difference depending on the individual view) between these scenarios.

opposing viewpoint is that I would bet the grandparents and other family members would not trade the precious 3 years that they got to spend with Caylee even if it means going through the devastating loss now.

As has been said in the other recent abortion thread ... I can't take the pro-life crowd seriously when they're so inconsistent.

I actually don't think pro-life is a bad stance. It makes logical sense. But the logic goes out the window when they deflect other comparisons (collateral damage) or bring on other ones (Casey Anthony).

In all the pro-life folks I've ever met or talked to, I've only met two or three that hold a consistently pro-life message ... and I never argue with them.

But anyway ... if you believe that going to an abortion clinic and killing an embryo because you're not equipped to handle it is the same thing as killing a 3 year old because you're not equipped to handle it ... I don't know ... I can't grasp that dogmatic logic.

I guess if killing is killing is killing ... then I can understand that. But that's not how the pro-life argument tends to work.

So in the case of rape. the woman should be force to carry the child to term?

Nobody would argue that they are exactly the same.. what I said is the thought process is the same (or very similar)... I want to live my lifestyle, a child is/would be a huge inconvenience to that, therefore I don't want/no longer want a child... a person who reaches that conclusion during pregnancy is going to have an abortion.... and after the child is born a rational person is going to give that child to its father or its grandparents or put it up for adoption so that somebody that wants it will actually take care of it... .that is where the comparison sort of parts ways because a rational person can have an abortion but a rational person cannot kill an infant or a toddler... but to an irrational person, the thought process is the same...... and that is what Casey should have done whether she killed the child or not, she certainly wasn't raising it in a decent fashion...

Agreed.

And on an unrelated note but mentioned in the thread ... I really don't understand all of the talk about her being attractive.

I'm going to come off as sounding rather pig-headed here, but ... she looks like white trash. She's a 6, at best ... the type of girl you find doing internet porn.

I love when people take extreme instances to make a case for something in general

As I have mentioned many times before, I understand that not everyone agrees with my stance of where life begins. I understand that it is a gray area and that some measure of compromise must be made there (even if I full-heartedly disagree with any compromise).

On my personal stance: I would believe that in this extreme case that you bring up that the woman should view this as a beacon of light in an otherwise terrible situation. That despite how terribly it began there is something positive that can come out of it, and that if it is too much of a weight to bear that she can at least adopt the child out so that she can know she positively affected the lives of others.
