yes you can. if you pre-order the redbox rental online (to make sure it has a movie you like before you bother going out), then you are armed with reviews to which movies people like and which they don't if you like other people's opinions.
also, it has a complete order history for you, so you can check if you have rented that movie before.

I have been renting tapes and CD's from him for maybe 25 years. I have to be customer teen something.
He's survived a Blockbuster a block down the road....which is about to close....so as long as he is there doing his thing, I'll be heading in on Tuesdays and Fridays to rent something from him.
We have Redboxes around, but you can't ask that box if it liked the movie or if I rented it 2 weeks ago.....yes, I've done that.
You could still ask the ice-man, milk-man or telephone operator if they liked the movie . . .

I see what you're saying (about blaming the movie companies and not Netflix), but I don't pay the movie companies each month. The movies companies aren't raising my monthly payment by ~60%. Netflix is.
Netflix is also demanding more money from me while simultaneously offering me fewer movie choices (ex. Sony movies being pulled).
If nothing else, it's terrible timing to implement this massive price hike and also have movie offering issues (that's with an already limited offering) at the same time. They (at the very least) should have squared away their contract issues before implementing this new costing plan.

I said to blame the movie companies for the lack of new movies available for streaming. Movie companies want to move physical copies of their new releases at $20-30 a pop, where I'm sure their profit margin is higher than whatever they might make in a flat contracted-for rate from their Netflix agreement. The point is, if Netflix wants to offer new releases but the companies say no, Netflix can't compel them to do otherwise.

I'm not sure the royalties is higher for the movie company for selling a physical copy of a DVD as opposed to a streaming copy... It does cut out the production people though but they aren't the movie people. Plus, if I buy a DVD I can watch it 100 times if I want and the movie people make money once. If I like it and want to stream it or get it at Redbox, I have to pay for it every time I want to watch it..

I know, but Netflix is still paying the royalties every time you do. They have just figured out a flat monthly fee to do it where I guess on some people who use it a lot they lose money and some people who don't use it a lot they make money. That was my point.

It's my understanding that most of Netflix's streaming content is paid for by license fee, not royalties.
