Just throwing out names here, but you mean to tell me if you picked up a Heath Bell or a Shields/Jimenez that you couldn't beat anyone in the NL? Would you be favored over the Phillies... probably not but that doesn't mean you couldn't beat them. The Braves are nothing special - they have great pitching but their hitting is almost Pirate-like. The Giants are tough but they're hardly the '27 Yankees.
I really don't think 1 pitcher would make that much of a difference in the win column.
They just can't seem to get any key hits this year in crucial situations. Yeah I'd love to have one of those pitchers but I'm more worried about 3B and LF at this point.
And the Phillies? Forget it. Rumors have them landing Pence now, if that happens anyone else in the NL can forget it.

Went to the game today and was amazed at Dusty's decision to leave Bailey in when he clearly didn't have it today. Several guys just look like they're going through the motions on the field with no energy. If only my sunburn would disapear.

I was at work, good game to miss.
But I saw the box score and couldn't believe Dusty left him in to give up 9 runs, all earned.
But at the same time I'm not surprised, that's Dusty's style and it isn't gonna change.

just so you know, I mean that for the Indians, Reds, and Pirates. We're all in the same boat this year (possibly good enough to make the playoffs, but not expecting anything beyond that).
Sorry, my was for our loss today. Just clicked on you.

Starting to get ugly? They are way past just starting to look ugly.
You are right, just making a point about the losing streak. The team has talent and the pitching has improved......they are still losing!
I still enjoy the Reds, not ugly to me...my eyes are blind!

Fine job by Bill Bray. I don't understand how we're leading the Giants again. We caught Bumgarner on the right day, he has these every so often. But we haven't been able to hit anyone lately. Dodgers just took Furcal out of the game. He should fit in StL's lineup very well.

It will be very interesting to see if Jocketty decides to make any trades before the deadline tomorrow.
Great outing by Leake. He may not have overpowering stuff but he's great at locating his pitches.

Leake's our #2 starter right now, and I like how he didn't let the bad defense get to him tonight.
Cueto against Zito tomorrow. This just became a must sweep.

I'm glad Walt has so far not given in to trades where you have to give up 3 or 4 really good prospects for a player. This team is more than a couple players away, I'd just as soon keep those prospects and keep building a strong team instead of mortgaging the future for one player who really won't make enough of a difference for this year.
Let's sweep!!

I feel better after the sweep but the Reds need to make up a lot of ground still, especially in these next two series against Houston and the Cubs. The Astros traded Pence and Bourne, that lineup has virtually no firepower. I want back to back sweeps

Just because it's one of your rivals ..... and they are only 3.5 games out ........ http://scott-miller.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/6270335/31021091Pirates make last-minute acquisition of Ludwick Posted on: July 31, 2011 4:07 pm Edited on: July 31, 2011 4:15 pm Score: 140 Sign-up to rate: Sign-up to rate: Score one for the Pittsburgh Pirates: They snuck around Cleveland minutes before Sunday's trade deadline and acquired outfielder Ryan Ludwick for a player to be named later or cash considerations. Buyers for the first time since 1992, the Pirates wind up with both Ludwick and first baseman Derrek Lee as they continue their surprising push in the NL Central. Though disappointing in San Diego since landing there last July, Ludwick's bat, once removed from cavernous Petco Park, could be a boost to the Pirates in a tight NL Central race. In Ludwick, the Pirates will get a one-time potent bat that has lost its stride in the past year. Ludwick is 3 for his past 21 and is hitting .238 with 11 homers and 64 RBI. Acquired from the Cardinals at last July's trade deadline to boost a Padres team that then was challenging for the NL West title, Ludwick hit .211 with six homers and 26 RBI in 59 games for the Padres in 2010. Still, because of Petco Park's vast dimensions, it's hard to say how close Ludwick can come in Pittsburgh to his 2009 form in St. Louis, when he hit 22 homers and collected 97 RBIs, or even '08, when he hit 37 homers with 113 RBI.

We get swept by the Mets and then we sweep the Giants! What a roller coaster ride it has been....I guess I just keep getting on, jumping off, and get right back on again. Go Johnny Cueto, excellent outing as usual.

The Buccos have dropped 8 of their last 11 games....they are pushing the wrong way.
The Pirates' tale will be told from August 12th thru Aug 28th as they have a 17 game stretch against the Brewers, Cardinals, and Redlegs.

2 of 3 against you, 1 of 3 against STL, 2-2 @ Braves including a sham loss, 0-3 @ Philly... that stretch wasn't exactly a joke.
People in Pittsburgh are irrational - they are after all mostly Steelers fans lol - and think this team should have done more and want to cut Alvarez and wanted Pence and Upton in trades... not gonna happen nor should it. The primary goal should be to finish above .500 and Ludwick and Lee give you a better shot at that than Diaz and Overbay.
Our offense has been a tremendous failure all year - these trades make it better. That is all. It'll take a miracle for us to win the division - we kind of own you this year and have played STL tough but MIL owns us... so again, .500 should be what they're "pushing" for. That streak HAS to end.
We get 7 games now against the Cubs and Padres to fatten up on - we'll be fine.
And for the record, no one is beating Philly in a playoff series this year. Lineup has finally woken up and the staff is amazing.

Here's a golden opportunity to maybe get back in the race, or at least close the gap a few games.
Probably the last chance to do so.

And then Masset comes in and snatches defeat from the Jaws of victory. LeCure did a helluva job getting out of that bases loaded no out situation but that HOUR he gave up the next inning was a killer. But why did Dusty pull D-Train to begin with? He only gave up 2 runs and only threw 77 pitches

Usually I'm complaining about him leaving the starter in too long but to pull him after 77 pitches really makes ya scratch your head doesn't it.

Maybe the coaching staff could tell he was tiring. If you watched the last inning he pitched, you could tell he was losing command of his pitches. Or maybe Willis flat out told him he was gassed.

Then why let him bat with 2 outs in the top of the 7th? I know he hit a dinger, but that was unexpected. He had him sacrificing earlier so if the plan was to take him out all along you figure they woulda had a pinch hitter

Not sure. I don know the dude can hit for a pitcher. Maybe Dusty liked the lefty vs right matchup there, but then again, they had Alonso on the bench at the time. I wish I would have watched the postgame interviews after the game.
Why send up Cairo in the ninth with 2 outs and the game on the line? Why not Heisey, the best pinch hitter on the team, and a much bigger threat to hit one out to take the lead?
I have never liked Baker, even before he came here. This is a very talented team that is clearly underachieving. That clearly falls on the coaching staff.

As are the Pirates since the 19 inning hose-job loss.
This baseball season turned real disappointing real quick.

Very true...I was about to call MLB. com and demand my 100 and some bucks back.
I did not want some customer service person tell me you big sucka!
Sad thing, I am still watching with hope, and know they have no chance.

At least we have found 1 major positive this year.
Johnny Cueto has emerged as an ace. He's got 20 game winner written all over him with a little run support.
