Seriously, a lemonade stand?

While I chose to have paper routes when I was a kid, I knew a lot of kids that did this and no one ever harassed them about permits. This is just freakin' ridiculous!

Quote:

MIDWAY, Ga. – Police in Georgia have shut down a lemonade stand run by three girls trying to save up for a trip to a water park, saying they didn't have a business license or the required permits.

Midway Police Chief Kelly Morningstar says police also didn't know how the lemonade was made, who made it or what was in it.

The girls had been operating for one day when Morningstar and another officer cruised by.

The girls needed a business license, peddler's permit and food permit to operate, even on residential property. The permits cost $50 a day or $180 per year.

One girl, 14-year-old Casity Dixon, says the three had to listen to police and shut down.

The girls are now doing chores and yard work to make money.

Same thing happened in Portland last summer if I recall. One would think there are more important things for police to do than harrass a couple kids trying to make a few honest bucks

Actually....they probably didn't have anything important to do....they could sit on the highway in a misguided attempt at fund raising or harass little girls.....either way--they are useless human beings....

They aren't useless human beings at all.

As a matter of fact they serve the public playing an important role in our society.

They serve as bad examples.

I applaud the officials. We can't have people selling drinks and snacks without a business license. It's just not fair to Country-Time, who I'm sure are in bed with the GOP.

In today's sue happy society, it's probably a good thing for the girls that their stand was shut down. Just think...some a-hole gets sick from their lemonade and he sues (and their parents) for millions.

Funny thing is, I'm only half joking.

Good for the police....Shut them down, we have to follow rules so to young kids, thats how they grow up & follow adult rules......I'd even stick in a $25.00 dollar fines to all three ya know teach them another lesson, heck $ 75.00 is enough to pay for your police office internet, we all know how much public officials follow rules on the internet.....but if I were them, I 'd use the $ 75.00 for expenses, I mean common, Lemonaide, hot,,,sand,...alcidda, see the connection there, but I'm sure they already had connected those dots

14 years old is a bit old to be running a lemonade stand. At that age I was working in an ice cream shop for $4.25 an hour. Teenagers can do some pretty terrible stuff, and while I understand how from a bird's eye view this looks ridiculous, I think the cops were doing the right thing here.

First thought that came to mind is that a neighbor didn't like the stand being out there and decided to call and complain about it. if that's the case, wouldn't the police be obligated to respond?

If thats not the case, then it's my contention that these officers are freakin idiots...

I agree

While you're technically not supposed to work at 14, most girls make a lot of money babysitting. Then there's dog walking too.

I guess you can't expect 14 year old girls to mow people's lawns, but that's what I did when I was 14. Mowed lawns and babysat (except that a year or two later no one will usually hire you as a babysitter because parents get creeped out or something (when you're a guy). Something no one talks about but is ridiculously sexist in our society)

parent's #1 concern is protecting their kids. sexist or not, the numbers stack up pretty well against males as far as 'unspeakable actions' parents are just protecting their kids.

You know the old saying.. "If life hands you lemons, pay the government $150 for permits, submit to a health department inspection, hire an attorney to make sure you are in compliance.... then make lemonaid."

Before you pay the government, you have to write out your business plan, take it to the SBA and try to get a loan. Market surveys will also have to be done, hopefully a local college will step in for that one.

Can't do that because the neighbors would sue the department.

It`s hard for kids to find jobs... look at all the older people out of work looking.... A lemonade stand is better than out stealing...selling drugs... or worse their bodies....

That's fair. But what keeps us from adding these stereotypes to everything else? People aren't supposed to discriminate when they hire based on race, gender, etc.

Of course they do. Whether it's at the blockbuster i worked at when I a teenager where we would hire good looking girls above all else or at the yacht club i work at part time now who finally hired a person of minority and never has hired a female to work on the maintanence/launch staff, yet we always seem to have a surplus of good looking young life guards, all skinny and very pretty. This is only the case at one of the two yacht clubs i've worked at though.

But people talk about that kind of stuff (prejudice in the workplace). No one ever talks about how all of a sudden, guys hit an age where we get replaced by female babysitters. And as said before, female babysitters aren't perfect. Most of the people you see on the nanny cams beating kids are women (of course, guys don't get hired for the job) and there are plenty of other instances of bad babysitting from girls. For example, my friend's older brother started smoking at 12 years old because of a girl babysitter.

Sick people are sick people, period

And 14 year old kids shouldn't be selling lemonade unless they make it legitimate and get permits, etc. That's for little kids..........

I wonder if the girls would be able to give it away and have a donation cup that you could contribute to only if you wanted to... they would probably make more money that way and it might even be legal.

not in Texas... you have to have an inspected food-preparation location (which cannot be in your home) if you are going to be distributing to the public even if you are giving it away.

Of course, as always, it's up to the police to enforce the law.

By the way, to make a delicious batch of lemonade:

boil 1 cup of water and dissolve 1 cup of sugar into it. Pour the syrup into a pitcher. Add one cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Add 3-4 cups cold water, stir, and chill. Delicious.

do you have the copyright on that recipe? if not, do you have a license to distribute said recipe on a public forum?

Your honor, I submit into evidence ArticleA*: post #827216 from dawgtalkers.net forum dated Monday, Jul 18 2011 at 02:21 PM.

You can clearly see that in no way was the temperature of the 'cold water' indicated in said recipe. My client, noting the boiling water in the first step, believed that to sufficiently cool the beverage liquid nitrogen was essential.

Since, the defendent had no such temperature stated to determine what was the proper status of the 'cold water' nor did he give any warnings to the possible risk factors of sufficiently frigid liquids, we are asking he pay for the $20 copay my client was forced to pay along with $10,000,000 in emotional distress from his *ahem* area shriveling up like a grape on a Phoenix sidewalk.

Not replying to anyone in particular but... I miss those days too. They can still be found in many rural areas of the country. Here's the thing though. I seriously doubt this is something that the cops 'Wanted' to do. They were probably pretty much mandated by policy or responding to a complaint.

Common sense should dictate in life but it often doesn't. But why is this? Who really is the culprit? I say it's all of us. It's American society in general. Someone somewhere got sick from an innocent mistake. People realize that they can sue and make money from something trivial like this. Did the young kids do anything wrong? Nope, but how about the police?

I may be wrong, but I'd say they were just doing what they had to do. The real culprits is us adults. We have done things that cause certain actions to be mandated, and common sense and decency are all for naught. It's not the police. It's not the government. It's society (although politicians and lawyers play a pretty big role imo).

I had three people break into my house not long ago. When the police pulled up to the house, they came out with weapons drawn, and stormed in. The offenders were still in the house. I appreciate what they did with all my heart.

Which makes me miss the days when common sense still existed, and the judge would have dismissed the case and told the neighbors to shut the hell up
