Hey guys,

I recently bought a 750gb external drive to store files etc that I want to use on my PS3. The drive was not recognized, and after I little research I see it is because the PS3 only recognizes drive in Fat32 format. I also discovered this formatting cannot be done through windows, and that I would need to get 3rd party software.

My question to the forum is, has anyone else had to do this? Can you recommend any software that has been used succesfully? I am looking to format the whole drive and not just a partition so that I can use it anywhere I choose.

Did you use the free version? No issues with the drive since doing it?

That is my real fear, damaging the drive.

why can't you just plug it into a windows computer as a 2nd hard-drive...format it as fat32, and then pop it in the playstation?

Windows only lets you format to Fat32 for 32gb and under for some dumb reason.

This step-by-step shows doing just this using the program mentioned above:

Excellent. Thanks everyone. I will try this program tonight and see what happens.

So I downloaded and installed Swissknife, but it only gives me a Fat16 option, not Fat32. Any ideas?

I tried swiss knife after some googling and it did not work for me, either.

What I found to work was Acronis Disk Director, but it is not free. I formatted a 500gb sata drive on Windows 7 with it to put inside my ps3 and I used the original 160gb as an external, I have had no problems with that setup so far after about a year of using it.

There is a way to get your ps3 to recognize NTFS, but you'll need a homebrew program called multiman though, which does not run on Sony's official firmware.

IDK it has been a few years since I did it. Here is the program I used.

Don't know if it has changed or not since I used it.

I downloaded Acronis and it quickly formatted the drive to Fat32. I began copying my files back on the drive when I left for work and will verify everything works when I get home.

Thanks Mattack!
