Not exactly earth shattering/breaking news, I realize.....but be careful!

EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM THIS MORNING TO 6 PM EDT THIS EVENING...

AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM THIS MORNING TO 6 PM EDT THIS EVENING.

* HAZARDS...EXCESSIVE HEAT... DUE TO HOT TEMPERATURES COMBINED WITH HIGH HUMIDITY.

* PEAK HEAT INDEX VALUES...AROUND 105 IN THE SHADE. VALUES CAN BE UP TO 15 DEGREES HIGHER IN THE SUN.

* TIMING...THIS AFTERNOON.

* IMPACTS...POTENTIAL FOR HEAT EXHAUSTION AND HEAT STROKE.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING MEANS THAT A PROLONGED PERIOD OF DANGEROUSLY HOT TEMPERATURES WILL OCCUR. THE COMBINATION OF HOT TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY WILL COMBINE TO CREATE A DANGEROUS SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE LIKELY.

DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS...STAY IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED ROOM...STAY OUT OF THE SUN... AND CHECK IN ON RELATIVES AND NEIGHBORS. TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS IF YOU WORK OR SPEND TIME OUTSIDE. WHEN POSSIBLE...RESCHEDULE STRENUOUS ACTIVITIES TO EARLY MORNING OR EVENING.

KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION AND HEAT STROKE. WEAR LIGHT WEIGHT AND LOOSE FITTING CLOTHING WHEN POSSIBLE AND DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. TO REDUCE RISK DURING OUTDOOR WORK...THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS SCHEDULING FREQUENT REST BREAKS IN SHADED OR AIR CONDITIONED ENVIRONMENTS. ANYONE OVERCOME BY HEAT SHOULD BE MOVED TO A COOL AND SHADED LOCATION.

HEAT STROKE IS AN EMERGENCY - CALL 9 1 1.

My sister in law chose yesterday and today to have their garage sale. (why you have a garage sale on a WEDS/THURS is beyond me ...... but what do I know)

2 weekdays when people are working ..... 95 degree weather with a 105 heat index ....... for some reason they didn't get many people. lol

I pulled a bottle of water out of the fridge yesterday and took it with me when I took my dog outside. It was warm 10 minutes later.

Speaking of dogs, don't forget to leave plenty of available water out for your pets, whether they're indoor or out. Its also a good idea to leave some water out for birds and wildlife if you're of a mind to.

Sounds like a typical Florida summer day.

That's the nice thing about technology, it gave us air conditioning. Hang in there, drink a lot of fluids and take breaks often.

Heat index of 109 here in C-Bus today.

Luckily my boss isn't in til 9:45. That's a good enough quiet period where I'm not forced to hear her whine and complain about the weather.

The heat today changed my plans to ride my scoot over to Ohio. I was going to leave after work but with the 95+ heat, humidity, traffic and blinding sun....no way. If I encounter any stop-and-go traffic I'd pass out in 10 minutes. So I'll leave early tomorrow morning and deal with the 50% chance of rain.

I left at 6:30 am for my daily 20-minute walk into the office and arrived covered in sweat. Normally, 6:30 is a good time even on hot summer days like this, but not today. It was 84 and humid as I was walking in. AND I was only wearing an A-shirt on the walk. Crazy hot.

Keep cool today people.

I'm going to Lowes today to buy some heat blocking window film.

My office/spare bedroom gets tons of direct sunlight, and it pumps heat right through the heavy curtains and "dark" blinds.

This film is supposed to block up to 70% of the heat .... so we'll see ......

Not even 9am and it's already 80 degrees out.

It has been 98-102 here the about 8 of the last 10 days, fortunately with the heat index it only feels like 110.

I tell my wife all the time that this weather is the same as the weather in the middle of January. Take 7 or 97 degree....you can't go outside in either. Well, you can but only for short periods and you have to dress in extremes.

That's why I want to move to San Diego. But then again, who doesn't? That's why it's so expensive to live there. 72 degrees every freaking day.

Thats the nice thing about living in the mountains. While it'll be 95 here today, I can take a trip to a higher elevation where it'll be a nice 70 degrees.

My biggest concern is that all my neighbors will be running their ACs and it'll knock the power out, and my cats will get sick.

Just a heat tip: If you wait until you feel thirsty, it is too late to keep up. Drink at an interval like about half an hour to an hour if you must be outdoors. This is not a beer guzzling contest; save the brews until later.
Sipping fluid is better than chugging. Stay warm!

A little heat never hurt anyone ;-)

Hydration, hydration, hydration.

If you're going to be working outside in this type of heat, drink at LEAST a quart of water at least 20 minutes before even setting foot outside, then regularly drink more by the pint.
Avoid carbonated beverages, although a can of Coke can offer plenty of much needed electrolytes and sugars if you start getting too run down.

Either way, I'm jealous of anyone that gets to be out enjoying this - I'm stuck inside in AC

The film is more of a tint than a heat blocker, it keeps it cool by letting less light through, making the room darker. And at night it is near impossible to see out through the window unless there are lights outside, and none on inside.

OK.....and pants. I would have surely have stopped traffic without pants on. More of a "point and laugh" situation though.

This stuff is supposed to let light in (slightly darker the room only) and keep out 70% of the heat.

For $30 I'll give it a try.

Plus, it's only going on one set of windows, so if it darkens stuff, I'll live with it. I can always look out the other windows in the room, or open the window if it's that desperate a situation.

I know y ou are joking but....

U.S. heat wave death toll rises to 22; Electrical grids struggle to keep up
Reporter: Vittorio Hernandez Location: Washington, D.C., United States Published: July 21, 2011 06:07 am EDT

The National Weather Service had placed 33 states under heat advisories and warnings on Wednesday. The 33 states cover almost 1,600 miles from western Nebraska to southern Maine.

The death toll in the U.S. due to the current heat wave that has hit parts of North America has risen to 22.

However, weather experts pointed out that despite the longer number of days of extreme heat and humidity, and the larger area covered, the number of fatalities is fewer compared to the 1995 heat wave when more than 750 people succumbed to the extreme temperature.

Community leaders attributed the fewer deaths to additional community outreach, better transmission of heat warnings and greater awareness among residents.

The National Weather Service had placed 33 states under heat advisories and warnings on Wednesday. The 33 states cover almost 1,600 miles from western Nebraska to southern Maine. Authorities estimate the number of Americans affected by the heat advisories at 100 million people.

17 states reached the 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8 Celsius) mark on Tuesday, while over 40 topped 90 degrees (32.2 C). Chicago registered a heat index of 108 degrees (42.2 C) on Wednesday afternoon. The index includes humidity to the actual air temperature.

With people opening air conditioning units because of the heat, more stress is expected to be placed on the U.S.’s power grid since Thursday and Friday are likely to register higher temperature readings in many states,

The same situation is going on in neighbor Canada where the temperature is expected to reach 98.6 F (37 C) on Thursday in Toronto. Because of the likely chances that electricity demand will also break records, Toronto Hydro warned residents to local power outages.

The utility said the ageing power grids would have difficulty coping with high demand for electricity of overnight temperatures stay above 68 F (20 C) because the old equipment would have lesser chance to cool down.

Environment Canada forecast temperatures to stay above 68 F at night and above 86 F (30 C) at daytime until next Tuesday.

I really need to cut my backyard. Seems it grew overnight and is VERY scraggly. I think I'll wait until it's in the shade...which will be just before sunset. Ugh...what I wouldn't give for a riding mower today.

While everyone else is burning up here in California we are having our second consecutive mild summer. It tops out at around 92° or 93° most days which is cool for the summer here.

I know what you mean.

Heat only makes the news if Chicago or NYC get hit with 95 degree temps.

I think the humidity is what blows people away. They just aren't accustomed to that along with high temps.

Here at the gateway to the deep south, humidity is no stranger either.

Just drink lots of water and Gatorade. Don't get too carried away between 2pm and 7pm. If you have to be outdoors...wear a brimmed straw hat to provide some shade and air circulation.

We just returned from the UP in Michigan 2 days early because of the heat! Forecast was 94 today, and we were in a cabin with no electricity that was a 2 mile hike to the vehicle. Luckily the fish cooperated....smallmouth, walleye and I caught a 30" pike. It's supposed to be cool up there!

Sounds like the movie "Jar Head"

Personally after living in Florida or the Carolina's I don't find much need for the AC here in Austinburg Ohio, but then I am a Jar Head and I know of and know how to prevent heat exposure. Others may not.

Good thread

PS. I know it's already been said, but I think that it bares repeating.

If you have an elderly neighbor or family member.

Check on them often. They are usually the first casualties from heat or cold exposure.

We've been in Kure Beach, NC (just south of Wilmington) this whole week, and it's been pretty darn warm.

But, our walkway right to the beach is just a few steps away.

Though tomorrow we begin our trek home to the frozen north.

We're on day #17 of over 100 degree temps, this is just a July statistic.

It's hot!

Found a nice spring fed creek with ultra clear water and temps around 60 last Sunday. I fished it from 8:30 to 3:30 and never broke a sweat.

I'm in fear of my electric bill for this month.

when it gets real hot I turn the A/C temp up a couple degrees.

When it's 90-100 outside then 80 inside feels great, when it's 85 outside then 75-76 is the magic number.

It helps save on the bill a little, and feels just as comfortable.

My latest fantasy involves sitting in CBS January 1st for the squealers game wearing shorts, a T shirt and sipping an ICE COLD beverage with one of those big industrial fans blowing a nice cool breeze on me.
