Droughns will be gone before he's due his 1.75 mil roster bonus.

Well, if he is indeed traded, I think it's safe to say we are going to go and get Peterson in the draft... what else could it mean?

Man... if that happened, could it be any clearer we're going for Adrian Peterson in the draft?

There is nothing but Tony Grossi saying that there was talk.... so the sole basis of this is a Cleveland reporter claiming that there was talk of this in Denver. Not surprising, I'm sure somebody somewhere in the city of Denver thought of trading to get Droughns back. From Grossi's article: link Quote:
Here and there:
There was talk in Denver last week that Droughns could be swapped back to the Broncos. The team has its annual void at running back after shipping Tatum Bell to Detroit in the deal for cornerback Dre Bly.. . .
I'm going to leave this one alone, but don't be surprised if one of the other Refs deletes this as being just rumormill garbage.
Besides, what are they gonna do, trade a DLine back to us??

That seems to be the case. It sucks that everyone will know that now though, somebody like Houston could move ahead of us and take him.

Rumour or not, and bonus aside, let's discuss the possibility of losing Rube. What happens if?
I think Droughns may not be seen as worth the cash to keep him, considering his age. It wasn't all his fault but he didn't look good last season, and he's getting older for his power running style. He also has a fumbling problem.

That 1.75 million bonuse due in a few day does make it likely something is done with Droughns.
That is a pile of cash to spend on a dime a dozen back.

It would make sense to get rid of him before the bonus is due... I am not saying I dont Like Droughns but he has been hurt over the seasons weve had him.. PLUS he still has his house there..(Remember: Domestic Violoence w/ wife) If we get rid of him I hope we Dont get Chris Brown.. Travis Henry Maybe...Jamal Lewis..Nice... But I would miss Droughs...But you have to put the team first..

I have never really liked Reuben so it wouldn't matter to me. I mena I respect him and was glad he put up 1,000 but he just isn't a very good back.
He is just entirely too slow. Hell if we would haave had Adrian Peteson in here the year Reub rushed for 1,000, AP probably would have rushed for 1,800 .

True... but it's also chump change compared to our cap situation.
Didn't we give him an extension last year? Anyone know what his signing bonus was? How much are we looking at accellerating onto this year if we trade him?

Until our oline proves they can consistently open holes, I like having droughns here. Peterson would be crushed with the line we had last year. Droughns is tough and always pounds an extra yard or two out of his runs. Sometimes that was difference between a stop for no gain and a 2 yard gain.
Speed is useless if there is no hole to dart through. Droughns has power and enough vision to use it well. If he goes and our line doesn't improve drastically, we might seriously regret it.

Droughns has been on thin ice for a while...from his off-season escapades to his poor production this year to sitting out the 1st Pittsburgh game...
Methinks Droughns is done in Cleveland.

Not to start a debate here, but have you seen Peterson run? The man gets the extra yards.

Yep , in College !
I figured this thread would turn into a Adrian Peterson vs Rueben Droughns thread...ridiculous.
Better start looking at 5th-6th round backs if you want an equal comparison btw a rookie and Droughns.

Well, I´m not really sure he´s worth the roster bonus and while neither FA nor draft class is great there are some players who would be an upgrade....
I really like LaMont Jordan and he´s on his way out in Oak as a scapegoat for a horrible overall Offense (he was the best there imho.....and his 3.8 avg is repectable considering the rest of the offense)...he´s also a good receiver out of the backfield
In the draft...who knows...maybe Brian Leonard in the 2nd? (no I´m not joking.....we have reportedly been looking at him a lot and our FO seems to love the guy)

At 6' 1 1/2"/220, it's not like the guy is a dimuitive wall flower. (Not to mention that he's pretty fast at 4.38-4.4) What's Ruben, 5' 11"/220? I don't see a big drop off here. Granted he hasn't played a down in the NFL, but I don't think gaining yards will be one of his problems.

Chris Brown has been injured far more than Droughns, Henry has been in trouble with the league multiple times with substance abuse, and Lewis had the same problem.
Just setting the landscape to show that there aren't obvious upgrades out there.
I'll save every poster the trouble of making a "Of course you're going to pimp your boy, Toad!" by saying THERE, it's done
With that bit of stupidity (and I"m sure someone will still have to go there because they can't help themselves ) out of the way, we could release him to save the cap space, but to what end? Even with the money we've spent on Stein, we're still sitting millions under the cap. We didn't spend much on Peek, we didn't get Diel, we didn't get Thomas, and we didn't get Clements. Simply put, there aren't any other big-ticket players to get. As a result, we'll still have tons of cap space.
The reality here is that if we cut Droughns, it won't be because of money. It'll get mentioned in every article "The Browns will save XXX in cap space with the move" but that won't be the motivation behind it. It'll be because they want to get either faster or younger, and the reality is that every other free agent back out there comes with warts. Brown has never played in 16 games in his career, Lewis has been hurt and might be the youngest back in the history of the league to not have much left on his tires, and Henry has been suspended in the substance abuse program.
I don't know that those guys are any better than Droughns. They certainly aren't as versatile, so don't be surprised if we keep him.
Besides, I happen to see Savage as a guy who won't yank a players chain. I'd believe that if he had plans to release Droughns, he wouldn't do it AFTER the free agent dollars have started to dry up. To do such a thing would be somewhat of a slap to Droughns' face, and that doesn't sound like our organization.
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

You think it takes a crystal ball to figure out Droughns is a bum?
Actually it just takes a TV and a couple hours every Sunday in the fall, you should try it sometime.

this is all just to get a trade done before the draft IMHO. It's a bunch of smoke screen to make it look like we will take AP. If we do trade ruben then I'm sure we will go after Lewis once we complete a trade.

The Toad is going to have to send back his Fit to size Rueben Droughns Golden Shaleleigh... Seriously though, I dunno about this move... Might be more smoke from Berea as we try and maneuver teams jockeying for our pick... Will be interesting to see how this all plays out...
