Lost in the NCAA scandals or late and lost in the NFL's hold out is the fact that college football will be starting soon so I thought I would start a thread to discuss actual football and not schools fighting allegations.
It's going to be an interesting year with some new coaches at high profile programs like Florida and OSU to see if they take a step backwards, its going to be interesting to see if Texas can get over whatever it was that happened to them last year..... I'm also interested in seeing if the ACC can begin to gain some level of respectability in football. Honestly it's embarrasing that this conference has been so bad for quite a while now. And the fact that it's a "basketball conference" has nothing to do with the fact that Miami, Florida State, Clemson, Virginia Tech, or SOMEBODY can't compete on a national level. Heard a statistic yesterday that made me stop and think... The Mountain West has won as many BCS bowl games in the last 3 years as the ACC has won since the beginning of the BCS.. 2.... that's awful.
Oh, I'm definitely not an expert. I just thought he was going to. Either way you've got a pretty inexperienced QB with a shorthanded team going against a team with a senior QB and a lot of speed. Seems like it's not a given OSU will take them down.
who is starting at quarterback for the Canes? Stephen Morris was their best QB last year and he's a sophomore this year. if Harris somehow still wins the job, then I like the Buckeye's chances (he makes too many mistakes). And, he could as it's not as if Morris blew people away last year (again, he was a freshman).
either way they are a 7-6 team that just changed HC's as well. it's early in the season and they will be in flux (yes, the Buckeyes are in flux as well, obviously. just saying it's probably a tossup between the two teams but i'd give the edge to the Buckeyes with how the defense handled their speed last year)
Quote: September 17 will be a big day in determining exactly where the ACC is in terms of rebuilding its "rep"...
Oklahoma against Florida State Ohio State against Miami Auburn against Clemson West Virginia against Maryland
Sorry, but the ACC goes 0-4 in those games...
No need to be sorry, that's entirely possible... but I could see the ACC winning two of them also.. I could see MD beating WVU, who isn't all that good but MD has a whole new staff so who knows. I could also see Miami Beating OSU.. the other two are stretches but FSU should be pretty good this year, I don't think they are "Oklahoma" good but we'll see... and Clemson always finds a way to disappoint.
that miami game scares the crap out of me. They are going to be jacked up. New coach, new buzz in their program, and the chance to kick a giant in the stones while he's down.
SEC,SEC,SEC. I can't wait. I'm not expecting big things from Florida this season, but the lion share of the games I'll watch will be in the SEC and the BiG 10 will be next.
yep, noone can talk smack to the SEC right now. well, unless you are a fan of Kentucky and still try to use conference smack despite never being better than a marginal bowl team (to Top )
If our conference was weak, like the Big Ten has been, then maybe we could win some games and be an overrated success story like the mighty powerhouse that is Iowa

Last shared Big10 championship Iowa won was way back in 2004. They then went onto beat the 'mighty' LSU Tigers in the 2005 Capitol One Bowl (a year after they beat the 'mighty' Florida Gators by 20 in the Outback Bowl)
The only other shared Big10 championship Iowa has won under Kirk Ferentz was in 2002.
Since that 2004 shared Big10 championship, the only time Iowa has even finished the season ranked in the top25 was in 2008 (#20 after beating 'mighty' South Carolina by 21 in the Outback Bowl) and 2009 (#7 after beating GaTech in the BCS Orange Bowl)
Sorry, you picked a bad team to say is over-rated. Looks like when they actually get ranked it's because they have a good team.
I can see why you don't like the Hawkeyes though. They seem to be a bit of a thorn in the side of the SEC under Ferentz (3-1 in bowl games)
North Carolina football coach Butch Davis was fired Wednesday, the school announced.
The decision was made by the chancellor Holden Thorp and that allegations related to academic impropriety were the biggest factor.
Though Davis' personal cell phone records are scheduled to be released soon, the source said that no new allegations had been brought forward.
If UNC has no claim to fire Davis "with cause," he would be owed $3 million to $4 million.
Davis, whose Tar Heels had a promising season derailed in 2010 when 14 players missed at least one game and seven were forced to sit out the entire year because of academic and eligibility issues, said earlier this week at the ACC's media day that he had not thought about quitting amid an NCAA investigation of his program for improper benefits and academic misconduct.
Davis said it had been "reassuring" to have the support of school administration through the probe. He also said he took responsibility "fully and completely" after the NCAA outlined numerous potential major violations in its notice of allegations sent to the school last month
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.
Well if there's any Coach in college football that can make a marginal QB look great in his offense its Charlie Weis (i.e. Brady Quinn and Jimmy Clausen).

I keep forgetting about Charlie...thanks for making me feel better.
As odd as it is for me to say this, if they can get good effort on D, South Carolina is the team to beat in the east.
They have the best receiver AND best running back in the country. As long as their QB stays out of trouble, he is a pretty good player himself.....add in Spurrier, and they can score points.
As for the Gators...they won't be pushovers, and the favorite in most games they play, but one has to be real....they have had a pretty darn good run the last 8 years or so....with a new coach, it might take a season or two to really push for more championships.
But....Fla is the bully of Florida....they get the bulk of the recruits out of the state against 2 other big time programs, and Fla is probably the #1 state for finding football talent.
I think USC and Bama for the SEC title...and that could be a really great game....toss-up type game
Sooner or later the run of SEC national titles is going to end.....probably this year.
As someone said, the teams are pretty close and it isn't because the top ones are sliding...the bottom keep getting better....it's a brutal conference.
There really are no easy wins.....just some easier than others.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

You think Clowney will have an impact on their D this year?
Joe Thomas made Justin Timberlake change his name. He didn't want wusses to have the same initials...
They had a good year this year, but that was to be expected with Meyer stepping down.
If they do that 4-5 years running, I'll agree.
You have to base it on trends over time and not a year here or there...
It's like me saying Michigan is starting to dominate recruiting over OSU because your top recruit just switched and is now going to Michigan.
I am not ready to say that.
As for the state...sure, OSU dominates the other state schools, but then again the other schools are all fairly minor league. Cincy might be the only other legit DI program....the others are MAC schools.....USF in Tampa is probably better than any of them by a good margain.
In Florida, you have 3 schools that have won national championships the last 20 or so years....
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.
I'll also be paying attention to my alma mater, Kent State. They have a beast DL named Roosevelt Nix. Won MAC defensive player of the year last year as a freshman.
Quote: pretty much every conference seems like it is up for grabs (between at least 3-4 schools). that should make for a very fun season.
I agree... though I'm sad that my Buckeyes could be in for a bad year... I'm thinking this could be, overall, a very exciting football year....
I just hope that if the Bucks don't win the Big Ten that SOMEONE other than the cornhuskers win it... I'd hate to have them win it in their first year...
if you're a unc fan, you gotta be ok with that right? i mean you're north carolina. It was fun while it lasted. You're not a powerhouse, but you went all in with trying to be one for a few years and now you'll get hit hard. I'd be ok with that and applaud the effort.
