I am getting tired of all the chatter. Just make a decision so we can serve the penalty and move on.

I feel just like you. Let's hear the penalty and start working for the future. Can't change the past. Just don't repeat the mistakes.

Anyone see this article about A&M possibly voting on August 22 to join the SEC next year?

web page

If that happens you will see a race to go after Texas, OU and OSU. The 16 team super conferences will be talked about all season.

there's some debate here about whether or not it is an actual vote or an information gathering session for A&M.

the chatter on the AM-dial here is that the SEC would also like to bring in either and/or Oklahoma and VaTech (and would actually prefer the Hokies if they stayed at 14 because they could add one to each division).

there is a provision in the SEC TV contracts that allow them to tear up the deal and renegotiate if they add teams to the conference, which might be why they want to do this after the BigXII and Pac12 just got huge TV deals.

Good lord, I thought by today one of two things would have happened.

The NCAA hands down their punishment, or new allegations filed. I didnt think there was a third option.

Well, I tried to add it to the old thread about the allegations, but it is gone, so this was the most relevant thread.

Well it looks like we will have to wait about 4 months to find out what tOSU's punishment is according to the AP.

Jim Tressel, Ohio State hearing over

Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS -- Ohio State's hearing before the NCAA took only four hours. Now it must wait up to 12 weeks to find out how it will be penalized for rules broken by its football program.

A memorabilia-for-cash scandal that resulted in player suspensions, coach Jim Tressel's forced resignation and the departure of star quarterback Terrelle Pryor also led to Ohio State's hearing before the NCAA's committee on infractions on Friday.

No one from the public or media was allowed into the guarded meeting room in the ballroom of a downtown hotel.

[+] EnlargeJim Tressel
AP Photo/Michael ConroyJim Tressel arrives for a hearing Friday in Indianapolis. The former Ohio State coach was appearing to testify about his role in the team's alleged NCAA infractions.

Apparently Ohio State officials felt the penalties they had self-imposed earlier -- Tressel's departure, vacating the 2010 season including a victory in the Sugar Bowl and a two-year NCAA probation -- were not enough to mollify the NCAA's version of judge and jury. Athletic director Gene Smith said that in addition to those previous sanctions, Ohio State will forfeit its $338,811 share of the Big Ten's payment for having played in the bowl game.

Previously, Smith had said that Ohio State had already offered "severe" sanctions.

Smith also said he looked forward to hearing Ohio State's final penalties in 8 to 12 weeks -- much longer than the 6-to-8 week window he had mentioned previously.

Tressel declined to answer questions as he hustled with his attorney through the hotel's lobby and jumped into an elevator.

He did leave behind a news release.

"I had an open and constructive exchange with the committee on infractions," the statement read. "They were well prepared and will now go about their work in deliberations. Again, I would like to apologize to the Buckeye nation, most especially to the players, staff and fans who remain so dear to me."

ESPN.com's Pat Forde reported earlier this week Ohio State had received a letter from the NCAA saying it was looking into additional allegations. But Smith, reading from a statement, said, "The NCAA staff concluded that the evidence at this time does not warrant additional allegations and that our joint review of any remaining items did not necessitate a delay to today's hearing."

Ohio State president Gordon Gee also weighed in.

"I appreciated the opportunity to appear today," he said in a statement. "The committee treated us fairly and gave us ample time to share our perspective. Throughout, we have been determined to do what is right in responding to the information we discovered."

The central point of the hearing was the contention -- admitted by Tressel -- that he alone among Ohio State officials broke NCAA bylaws when he learned some of his players had accepted improper benefits from a Columbus tattoo-parlor owner in April 2010.

He then declined to tell Ohio State or NCAA officials for more than nine months, contrary to his contract and other NCAA rules.

In effect, Tressel knowingly played ineligible players throughout last season.

Big Ten Blog

Big Ten ESPN.com's Adam Rittenberg and Brian Bennett write about all things Big Ten in the conference blog.

• Blog network: College Football Nation

Tressel's decision led Ohio State to pressure him to step down in May after 10 seasons, a 106-22 record, seven Big Ten titles and the 2002 national championship. It also sparked the NCAA investigation.

The NCAA committee will determine if Ohio State's sanctions went far enough. It could tack on a bowl ban or limit the Buckeyes' number of recruits, among other possibilities. The NCAA has informed Ohio State that the two most serious findings it could hit the school with -- lack of institutional control and failure to monitor players and coaches -- are off the board based on information it has received so far.

Six Ohio State players were suspended for the first five games this fall for trading memorabilia for cash and discounted tattoos. Pryor, one of those suspended players, gave up his final year of eligibility for a shot at playing in the NFL. One other player has left the program; yet another player will sit out the season-opener.

Smith told The Associated Press earlier this week that the investigations into the players' actions and those of Tressel have cost Ohio State's athletic department about $800,000 so far.

The hearing took place in the large Indiana ballroom on the first floor of the downtown Marriott. The room had 38 microphones placed on tables set up in a square.

There were guards preventing the public or media from entering any of the 14 doors along two sides that open to a common hallway of the hotel.

Ohio State and its NCAA consultants, The Compliance Group, met for almost five hours on Thursday night to discuss its case.

The 10-member committee on infractions, chaired by Mideastern Athletic Conference commissioner Dennis Thomas, heard testimony and asked questions.

When the committee's recommended penalties are expected announced, Ohio State can appeal the verdict.

Ohio State officials have worked closely with the NCAA since last December in a climate where several big-time football (Southern California, North Carolina) and men's basketball (Tennessee, Connecticut) programs have been or are in trouble, there is an undercurrent that the NCAA may choose to take a hard line on the Buckeyes' violations.

The most recent spate of rule-breaking at Ohio State overlapped with probation remaining from when the men's basketball program committed major violations under then-coach Jim O'Brien in 2004. That makes Ohio State a so-called repeat violator and could affect the school's treatment by the NCAA.

I actually think both could be good coaches... Hoke seems like a much better fit for UM than Rich Rod ever was... and I really like Luke and hope that he is given a fair chance at staying... we'll see how this year goes for the both of them... lot of pressure on both of them...

If A&M leaves they'll likely bring in Houston to keep it at 10 teams and to get more of the Houston market... though there are so many longhorn fans here I don't think it would bump them up much

the big 12 commish basically told A&M that the Big 12 can survive without them as long as UT and OU are still in the big 12..

I actually see the big 12 crumbling though in a few years... what incentive does UT have for staying in the big 12 now that they have their own network?? I could see them going independent and then everyone else in the big 12 moving to a new conference.

we'll see... sounds like A&M is regretting not leaving last year...

I like the idea as long as we are getting rid of the BCS and are going to a playoff system. Every conference plays a championship game. The champions are put in a playoff to crown the National Champ.

There are tons of articles on ESPN and Yahoo that are talking about A&M leaving and 3 other schools joining them making the SEC a 16 team conference. If it happens it will be the domino that we all though last year when Texas almost joined the PAC. If the SEC goes to 16 then the Big Ten & the Pac 12 will be looking to do so also.

Yes it does.

The interesting scenario is if either Kansas or Kansas St. leaves the other is likely to follow the other..

Leaving only 8 teams if you include Houston.

Would love for Kansas to join the SEC.

Getting to play them in basketball every year would be awesome.

Wouldn't help our football conference much, but it's not like we need help there

Nay, we will go for Oklahoma and Oklahoma St. first. Although it wouldn't boost the conferences basketball status as with Kansas (and Kansas St.).

if they ever do go to a playoff system, they are going to have to. I honestly think one day they end up in the big east. it only makes sense since basketball is already there and they'd have a guaranteed bcs game 3 out of 4 years.

they really run the risk of becoming irrelevant if they join the big 10 or another power conference. their ability to shedule who they want when they want is the only thing keeping that program alive.

I honestly don't know if they will ever be a perennial powerhouse ever again. I do think they can put forth a really really good team every 4 or 5 years, and sustain it for maybe 2 years at a time, but i think a ton of their fans still think they are in that elite class of texas, florida, osu, oklahoma, etc.. and that's just not the case.

as far as nbc goes, i don't know the contract or the relationship, but i know i did hear joe montana say that they could end up losing it one day, if they keep putting crap on the field.

I do think Kelly is the real deal. You don't win at Cincy and Central Michigan unless you know what you're doing. Just look at the cincy quarterback last year. He was all world in kelly's system, when he leaves, he looked like a total bum at times. The guy definitely has a knack for making ordinary quarterbacks into good ones in his system. Reminds me of a young Steve Spuerrior.

I'm starting to think Notre Dame never had the right coach. Just look at some of their coaches. Bob Davey, Charlie Weis, Tyrone Willingham. 3 bums, that didn't have a clue on how to be a good college head coach.

i can't argue that. weis was never fit for the college game, and the other 2 were mediocre at best coaches, not set for the big time.

I just don't see how notre dame is going to recruit good defensive players. guys like you'd see in the SEC, B12, and in the top end of the Big Ten. Those kinds of guys just don't want to go to notre dame. there is no draw there at all. most of these kids don't really care for the tradition.

Notre Dame used to hang their hat on their games being nationally televised, but now with all these different networks putting their hand in the pot, the games are all over the place, you can see several games from all the power conferences every saturday. the best games always get shown. the only people watching ND football now, are ND fans, and fans of the teams they face. It's no longer a Saturday event for college football fans. they can get football elsewhere.

I think the fact that the school is so small hurts as well. I went to my first game there last year, and it was a nice place to see a game, but there was not a whole lot going on. If i was a young person looking to pick a place where i was offered a free ride for being awesome at football, i'd probably look at other places.

Like I said, I think they can become good again, but I think the days of them being a year-in, year-out top 5ish top 10 program are long gone.

Notre Dame gets 9mil/year from the NBC contract. Last year each Big Ten School got 21 million. I don't thing the TV contract is what is keeping ND out of a conference.

I agree their first choice would be the Big East. Which is why in these super conference scenario's many "experts" think the Big Ten would go after Rutgers & Pitt to basically kill the Big East. But with TCU joining the Big East it will be a little tougher to do that. The ACC would have to poach some of the Big East as well.

If the Big East it poached to the point that they will fold and the PAC, SEC, B10 & ACC are all going to Super Conference then ND would not want to be on the outside looking in.

Again from all the "expert's" opinions the Super Conference would form a playoff schedule to crown a champ and you will need to be in one of the Conferences to play for the NT.

I say 4 Super Conference winners get in, and then two "Wild Cards" with the highest BCS standings also get in, and do in NFL Playoffs style, 1 & 2 get a bye, 3-6 play the first week...

And you could STILL have you 300 bowl games every year...

Texas is the problem. Nebraska wanted no part of them, and now their main rival wanted to get away from them. They need to just go independent like Notre Dame. It's obvious they don't want to share the wealth, that is needed to keep a conference together. What a joke college athletics has become.

andy staples 'wins' for funniest paraphrasing award

Quote:

Sunday's press release from Florida president Bernie Machen on behalf of the SEC. Here is what it said.

"The SEC Presidents and Chancellors met today and reaffirmed our satisfaction with the present 12 institutional alignment. We recognize, however, that future conditions may make it advantageous to expand the number of institutions in the league. We discussed criteria and process associated with expansion. No action was taken with respect to any institution including Texas A&M."

...

The language was pure legalese meant to slow a boulder rolling downhill. Here's a more accurate translation.

If we can make more money from our TV contracts, we're probably going to expand. But no one has applied for membership yet. So we didn't vote today. If we had voted to extend an offer to a school that hadn't applied for membership, we might have left ourselves exposed to a big, fat lawsuit. So don't sue us, Big 12. If someone, perhaps a land-grant institution based in College Station, Texas, happens to authorize its president to seek new conference membership -- maybe at a special Board of Regents meeting Monday afternoon -- and that president happens to ask us to consider his school for membership, than we might strongly consider that school.

BTW, I am very greedily hoping that A&M does move to the SEC and the Big XII stays together by adding University of Houston (most logical 10th team expansion - moreso than TCU or SMU which I have also heard since it is a large state school with great facilities and will have signficant political and media backing).

I mean, are you kidding me? I can drive a little over an hour and see SEC teams @ College Station while also opening up my trips to Houston to see more big-time college football?

Add in another big-time TX college for my kids to choose between if they want that type of experience?

And, all this right after TCU just got added into the Big East (I don't make as many trips up to Dallas, but I'd love to see Syracuse get back on track and it's just another avenue for more good football games nearby).

i would be 100% on board with this if it meant playoffs for the whole thing...

think about how fun it'd be, plus you would see teams scheduling OOC since it doesn't matter if you lose those games. they'd be good measuring stick games although they wouldn't have quite the hype, but i think bragging rights is still a huge thing in college football as you see with meaningless bowl games.

maybe just kinda divy up huge conferences with a western, midwest/great lakes region, southern, and your eastern (ACC/BE combined)

like combine the pac 10 with boise and some of the texas teams...

combine the rest of the b12 with the b10

big east/acc as i mentioned, let notre dame go there if they wish..

take the sec and add miami, fsu..

maybe even throw in the relegation that the EPL soccer league uses? if you finish in the bottom of the conference, you go out and whoever wins out of the teams in that region that aren't in, gets their shot? how cool would that be for a like a MAC school to get their shot?

I think you'd see quite a few teams stay or go independent and force a clause in there for the rights to one of those wild card slots (BYU and ND...but also a school like TX and possibly OU when their conference falls apart). Also, the non-BCS schools would be clamoring for a way into the party.

and, I disagree with the above about the bowls. it would be the death-knell to them because you would effectively have an 10 team playoff that is really a full season playoff (8 game round-robin for each slot in the conference championship games and then the 6 team BCS playoff). ratings would completely drop off for the other bowls as all the talk would be around these games (instead of the current format where there is 1 big game and a bunch of other games).

I would be fully on-board, but there would be a bunch of things that need to be worked out (can you call it a conference if you don't play inter-division games? if you play inter-division games, then how do you keep the schedule balanced to make it fair determination on the division champ? etc.)

the other concern is, if you make these conferences too big, how do you determine either the winner, or if they have a conf championship game, who gets to go?

what if 3, 4 teams all finish with the same record, and you either have an oklahoma/tt/texas situation like you had a few yrs ago, but this time maybe some of the teams tied haven't even played each other?

i honestly think they could find a way to make it work but when you talk ncaa, football, and playoffs, i need to see it before i believe it.

no. the only way you could do it in a 16 team conference is to have 2 8 team divisions. you always round-robin the other 7 in your division.

the question then comes in do you play 2 teams from the other division and do those count towards your division championship (because it will always be unbalanced)? or do you play inter-division games but treat them as we treat OOC games today?

even then, you still could have the TX v. OU v. Tech issue because they all beat each other in round-robin and went undefeated against everyone else. at that point, you are splitting hairs and it's with a conference champ spot on the line (which equals a ticket into the playoffs).

It's just a thought, but if they divided it into quarters ie; 2 x 4 teams (N, S, E, and West) /division and 2 divisions / per conference (SEC), then they could use the model of the NFL only condensed.

Maybe not I'm just throwing my 2 cents out their.

I like it

you'd have some hand-wringing over losing some traditional rivalries, but they'd still play most years.

and that means we are up to a 22 team playoff, right? Conference championship 2 rounds (division winners(4x4), then conf champion game), followed by the 6 team playoff.

now, the independent teams would have a huge advantage of having 2 less games to win to get that wild card slot though. perhaps one of those slots could be a play-in tourney between the top 4 non-BCS conf. schools?
