Maryland was running a very similar scheme to what Jauron runs. If DQ is healthy he can do the job at Mike. Gocong is just to hesitant. He is a great fit for Mangini's many zones and reactionary defense and I still believe one of those zone 3-4 types will come knocking for Gocong.
Maiva could be a star in this defense. Not many tackle but huge plays.

Let's hope Maiava beats him out in camp.

Interesting and didn't see that 1 coming...not much of a runner but pretty good receiver out of backfield and pass protector. Over 2mil/year for him, guess we have to re-sign Hillis to some long term deal since he'll be only making 555k

3rd down running back who knows the offense.
and we didn't break the bank to get him either.
Good move and also good insurance in the event Hardesty or Hills get injured.

I think Hillis will see as many reps at receiver if not more reps at receiver than running back so the move makes sense. 2 things Shurmur, Holmgren and Heckert want in a receiver are run after catch ability and great hands. Hillis has the best hands of anyone on this team, hell maybe in the league and well his run after catch ability is scary as hell.
This signing was about scheme as much as it was true quality depth. Good pickup.

Browns | Brandon Jackson agrees to terms Thu, 28 Jul 2011 17:51:01 -0700
The Cleveland Browns have reached an agreement with free-agent RB Brandon Jackson (Packers) on a two-year, $4.5 million deal.

Never impressed me much as a runner, but he is good in the passing game. Doesn't excite me, but he's young and can contribute.

I like the signing. Didn't have to pay out for him, has starting experience, decent, and can step in IF Hardesty can't stay healthy ( I don't even like saying that) to take the load of Hillis.

That's going a little overboard.

j/c I'm not going to lie, at first I thought that said we signed free agent RB Brandon Jacobs...I got excited for a little bit. Then I looked closer Decent signing, just RB depth, not sure why anyone would get all worked up over this; some people will complain about anything.

Think Brian Westbrook and how he was used up there in Philly. As for hands, I have seen him make amazing catches and have yet to see him drop any ball.

I heard that we were interested in him so it's not really a shocker to me, but I almost forgot about him.
Okay we are set at RB.

This is what we were going to be hearing about after 4:00PM, Usama Young and Brandon Jackson?
This is our splash into free agency? It's a Greg Louganis kind of splash, you didn't hear the splash and unless you were watching all you saw was ripples.

Actually, a FS is not just a "3rd CB".
The Colts Bethea is 5'11" and 203. Rolle on the Giants is 6'0" and 208. Allen on the Eagles is 6'1" and 210. The Bears Chris Harris is 6'0" and 207. The Vikings Williams is 6'0"and 203.
That's a sampling of some 4-3s around the league.
And I never said he is JUST a 3rd CB, but the FS tends to be a cover guy while the SS is usually a more in the box guy, I also did say Young is a bit on the small size but he is a speed guy. I am a Kent fan, Young plays bigger than his listed size and 10 pounds really isnt that big of a deal.

LOL, I'm still waiting for a complete list of our UDFA signings. It was said we signed 22, but even NFL.com has only 17 listed.

It is actually pretty fitting for Jackson as well. Think Westbrook after the concussions when they were trying to protect him. Turned him into the 3rd down scat back to run the draw, catch a few passes and pick up the blitz. Jackson is excellent in blitz pickup. jReally best way to describe jackson is a poor man's reggie bush with better blitz pickup skills.

Okay we did hear that Moore will probably sign his tender and Dawson will most likely sign his Franchise tag.

He a fantastic pass pro RB.
He has a great ability to understand who is coming in on the blitz and neutralize them.

They have said numerous times that we won't be very active. I'm just hoping they are being very tight lipped on anything else in the works.

I'dsay most peoples problems is the fact that this isn't your "normal" FA period...
There are alot or 4-5 year players, who are just hitting their prime, that would have expedited the rebuilding process of the Browns...
And it "appears" to some, that we're just kind of sitting by and letting everyone go...
I heard someone on TV say something along the lines of "If you don't spend your money on talent NOW, you're going to OVERSPEND on AVERAGE talent LATER..."
I honestly don't know what are FOs plan this offseason was/is/will be... And I'm ok we didnt give Sidney Rice and other a bazillion dollars etc...
I dunno...
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

Exactly how I feel. I know it's still early, but it seems similar to Mangini's philosophy of using free agency to build the bottom of the roster.
Hope we hear a lot more news coming from the Browns in the next few days. Just tough seeing them almost bypassing an opportunity to upgrade in talent.

Browns one up on O-line; rushing Edwards for D-line
Jul 28th, 2011 @ 2:50 pm by Steve Doerschuk
As daunting as some of the Browns’ problems are, they have an experienced offensive line going for them. Joe Thomas and Eric Steinbach enter their fourth year together as the left side of the wall. They’ll line up next to center Alex Mack a third straight year. Tony Pashos holding up at right tackle could be a huge help, simply because he’s a veteran who was with the team all last year. As we mentioned in the previous post, the unit will not have to get used to a new coach, since George Warhop is back. If Pork Chop Womack is back, using him as the right guard might be the best play. Former NFL lineman Ross Tucker, a smart cookie who now writes a column for ESPN, indirectly touched on why the Browns might have an advantage over most teams in one important regard. Tucker writes of lockout-challenged teams: “Whether the mistakes and sloppy play will be noticeable to the casual observer or the untrained eye remains to be seen, but the issues certainly will be there. It probably will be most notable when it comes time to protect the quarterback. “Pass protection is a complicated process that involves the linemen, running back, quarterback and receivers all being on the same page and working in concert. If just one of those players makes a mental error on a given pass attempt, it could spell doom for the play and the quarterback.” On the flip side, rookie Owen Marecic figures to be less effective in blitz pickup than veteran Lawrence Vickers would have been. • • • Ray Edwards, who was with the Vikings in 2010, shapes up as a prime defensive end target for the Browns in free agency. The former Cincinnati Woodward star has been in the NFL five years, four as a starter, but is only 26. He was in on 16.5 sacks the last two years. He was a fourth-round draft pick out of Purdue in 2006. He lost four games to a steroid-related suspension in 2007.

Not for nothing.........but this just kills me. I'm 6' 2", 195, and I've stood and talked to both of these guys. I guess it proves to me that the published height and weight isn't the real deal. No way is Scott 250 and 6' 5", and gocong isn't 260. Unless both of them beefed up since last October.
Having stood up to those guys and other guys I know for a fact to be that size, yes they are that big. You don't notice the leg muscle as much. My brother is 6'3" 210 but you would never guess it looking at him. And those guys all look much bigger.
Kid who graduated here a few years ago is a 240 lbs shot putter (I have seen him weigh in) and he doesn't look any bigger than those guys.

The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Thursday that the club has released G Brian Waters. Waters (6-3, 320) appeared in 163 games (149 starts) and started three playoff contests in 11 years with Kansas City. "And so now Waters, who has given no indication of an intention to retire, will hit the market. He’s a five-time Pro Bowler and a two-time All Pro" -PFT Dont know this guy but five time pro-bowler? Worth a look... KC chiefs web page

He's been a very solid player for a long time; however, I imagine he will demand Alan Faneca-like money. I doubt we would be interested in such an expense, as we have already taken note.
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Wow we really are sitting on our hands in free agency. I guess the front office is ok once again with the worst wrs set in the NFL . Injured the last 3 years RT pashos and no RB help( Brandon jackson is not as good as Harrison). No lbers or DEs signed no safety help. lerner has to spend some of his money because he can't squirrel it away under the new rules. I feel its Xmas and we don't have any gifts so far.

No gifts on Christmas?
Hey let's play a game, I'll put 3 teams names in a hat and who they signed.
The Patriots, the Dolphins, and the Browns.
Ok Albert Haynesworth, and Chad Ocho Cincho
Reggie Bush and Kyle Orton,
Brandon Jackson and Usama What's his name Kent St DB.
spin the wheel, roll the dice, or pick it out of a hat, which group of two players do you think makes the least impact, you already know who.
