Cle23,
1. I didn't say we let Moore walk, I said we drafted a rookie version of a player we already had.
2. I was using Wright as an example of not retaining our own talented players. We'll probably end up having to pay someone less-talented more money now beacuse of it. Maybe not, there are still a number of CBs available, but we haven't shown a strong ability to sign guys we "wanted" yet this FA period.
3. And still a prime draft pick. Could have been Jaquizz Rogers, Rashad Carmichael, Taiwan Jones, Marcus Cannon, Shilioh Keo, Pernell McPhee, Byron Maxwell, Chris White, Tyler Sash, Greg Romeus, or any other players who could contribute to the team at a position of NEED.
4. you're right. It's not over yet. Maybe at 6:00 they will announce that we signed Antonio Cromartie, Michael Huff, and Malcolm Floyd. Maybe they'll retain Jayme Mitchell. After the way thing shave gone, though, I'm not feeling good about that.

It should be noted that the Browns did offer Wright a contract that was worth more but Wright decided to move on.

And for more years.
I'm thinking Wright wants to cash in big. Took a one year deal in the hopes of raising his stock again and cashing in big next year.

Does anybody think that since Holmgren and Heckert have staying power, their master plan could be to tank this season so we can be in a position to draft Luck outright or acquire him with our two #1s next year? It's tough to look at this roster and feel confident. With money in hand, to sit by so idly without even rumours being circulated, makes me wonder.
Wright was smart to take a one-year deal. His value was hurt. Being on a team with a pass rush this year, should help his play tremendously and set him up for a nice 2012 payday.

Without knowing what they have in Colt McCoy, that'd be reckless and stupid, not to mention would ... off a lot of fans and put Shurmur on the hot seat next year.

If Holmgren and Heckert's plan is to purposely go into the season without the intention of giving 100% effort to win, then I want them both gone. I seriously doubt that this is the case, however (and I certainly hope that it isn't).

She's mentioned it a couple times on twitter. She did also mention last night that he wasn't signing here, so take it FWIW.

Agreed. I doubt if anyone comes in looking to lose. Hurts their reputation too much as well as their job prospects.

no, noone thinks that. well, maybe Seattle fans feel that way, but even there it is misplaced.
and we have to spend the $$$ somewhere because of the salary floor. so, locking up Joe Thomas should be their #1 concern.

He's already in Cleveland, so you'd think it would be close to being done.

Came from the man himself, but we're not allowed to link it to prove it Apparently he's hanging out with TJ Ward and Joe Haden and hitting up some local restaurants

link CLEVELAND -- Browns cornerback Eric Wright, who had a tumultuous season here in 2010 and ultimately received death threats from fans, turned down more money and a longer deal from the Browns to sign a one-year contract with the Lions, a source told the Plain Dealer. Wright tweeted today that he dealt with 12 teams during the free agency process. Wright, 26, is hoping to land a starting job in Detroit. In Cleveland, he probably would've been the third cornerback again behind starters Joe Haden and Sheldon Brown. Brown is coming off rotator cuff surgery, but said earlier this month that he'll be ready to practice full-go when he's needed. The Browns also have defensive back Mike Brown who can play corner or safety and drafted speedy corner Buster Skrine out of Chattanooga in the fifth round. Skrine signed his contract today and will be on the field Saturday for the first practice, which is closed to the public. It's not yet known if the Browns are pursuing other free agent cornerbacks. In Detroit, Wright will be re-united with former Browns cornerback Brandon McDonald. In other Browns news: * The Browns never expressed interest in Vikings defensive end Ray Edwards, his agent Doug Hendrickson said Friday. Edwards signed a five-year deal with the Falcons, according to Fox's Jay Glazer. "Cleveland never reached out to us on Ray or ever returned our calls,'' said Hendrickson in an email. * First-round pick Phil Taylor was still waiting for word Friday afternoon that his deal was done. He tweeted: "Dam. Lockout is over. Contract can't be that hard. Lol..'' * The Browns have signed fourth-round pick Owen Marecic.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

Here you go. link
Info about Wright, Ray Edwards and Phil Taylor. Fortunately for us all it was posted on Cleveland.com and not gleaned from that devilish blue bird.
Edit: Or just read the post above this, since he beat me to it.

yep. that was my point. JoeT will get his money and not spending it on FAs now is wise. whether he signs the extension in August or during the year really doesn't even matter.

Unless I'm misunderstanding things, extending Joe Thomas' contract this season shouldn't have any effect on this year's salary cap requirements.

Huh! I guess we don't need a DE after all.

his signing bonus would be split up over the years and I believe would take effect immediately. also, the NFL allows us to tear-up this year's salary and replace it with a larger one, which would give him the impetus for doing a deal this season rather than waiting.

Yeah, I'm trying to find out if a mid-season contract extension's signing bonus is prorated over the remaining weeks of the current season, or not until the next full season. In other words, is the cap hit reduced on a weekly basis during the season, or do you take the same hit whether you cut a guy in week 2 or week 16? The only thing I've really seen is "spread out over the remaining years of the current contract as well as the extension", but that's pretty ambiguous.

not completely sure, but I would assume it would take effect for this season. another question would be are they allowed to have the contract be retroactive for the entire season.
i.e. if JT signs an extension in December, then can his pay bump count for the entire year (and help us eat more cap room that way as well)
not sure.

How far below the minimum are we?
Does JT even WANT an extension here?
I always figured he'd end up in GB...

No, no ,no, we can't let Joe get away. Anyways is that not the reason for our inactivity in FA so we can sign our own guys. At least that would explain not spending much money on FA's.
Imo that would be a stone-able offense.

I thought I read something like $33 million, but that might've been total cap room.

If you're Joe Thomas, it's great being paid alot of money, being the best LT in the league and all...
But eventually most people want to win something...
If you don't feel like Cleveland is going to do that for you... You leave...
Sure we could franchise him forever I guess, but do you really want an unhappy LT?
