yeah its kinda sad things have worked out this way....
we don't have anywhere to go but up now.....
my biggest regret is the bad luck that got Phil Savage...had Gary Baxter and Bentley not been on a gurney....we may not be even having this conversation right now...
imagine....if our team 3 years ago consisted of:
Joe Thomas Kellen Winslow Braylon Edwards Gary Baxter(had Pro potential at corner) Lecharles Bentley(dude was the best center in football..a bulldozer) Eric Steinbach Jamal Lewis Josh Cribbs Corey Willaims Shawn Rogers Rubin Dqwell Jackson Eric Wright
thats a very darn good core group of guys to build a team around....Bentley and Baxter could have been the final 2 pieces that could have pushed us over the top to get what we needed to get the job done.....
I personally always thought we gave up on Romeo and Savage too soon...2008 was riddled with injuries at key positions...its not uncommon to take 1 step backwards after taking a big leap forward....i fully believe had Savage and Crennell been given 1 more year in 2009...Savage would have made a few moves, and this team would have been right back at the 10-6 mark at the very least....this team was so very close....close....we gave up too soon.
then again we also gave up too soon on Mangini....his program was finally taking hold...we beat New england, we beat the Saints, and we were 1 Stucki fumble away from beating the NY Jets...that Jets game set the tone for the year...had we won that game...we may have had a whole different season....Mangini wanted to bring in Josh McDaniels as OC...holmgren should have let him....Mangini was building something here...even though Rob Ryan made me nervous, the dude was willing to gamble and take risk...i liked it....
for whatever reason we give up too soon.
no matter what happens now...I want to see Shurmur Heckert and Holmgren get another 4 years here in cleveland...we will never know if its going to work unless we give them time to build.....we cna't give up too soon this time....even though right now im not a big fan of this regime...they need 4 years...they need until the end of the 2015 season before we even consider getting rid of any of them...if we don't show some patiences...we will be right back where we started...

I did hear that, but that's just speculation (pretty much the same as all the other stories about what went down, to be fair).
My post was more pointed at IF it was the case that guys don't want to come here to play. Purely hypothetical.

It is not speculation. Bunkley was in Cleveland. Quote:
Reports from Philadelphia on Monday claiming Bunkley refused to report to the Browns are false. Bunkley did report to Berea on Sunday, according to two independent league sources, but not all the conditions of the trade were met, so Bunkley's rights reverted back to the Eagles.

This is not just directed at you but everyone else who is saying Bunkley refused a trade to Cleveland because he didn't want to play here.

Regardless of why BB didn't stick....we're still in the market for a D-lineman and now everyone knows it. Something tells me we sit on our hands from here on out.
If Osi Umenura wasn't 29-years old, maybe 26, I'd be all over offering our 2nd rounder for him. However he is 29, wants a longterm deal and had some random injuries (though a very, very good player).

It's still speculation that the "conditions of the trade" that weren't met were a failed physical, unless you've got a link other than the one you posted there.
That said, it does seem that the trade fell through for reasons other than him simply not wanting to be here, which is a good thing, as good as a trade falling through can be I suppose.

I thought I had read the Giants wanted a first rounder for him... I agree if he was younger he might be worth a high draft pick, but at this stage in our development there is no way we give up a high draft pick for anyone this year.

Ya, they want a first rounder but taking our 2nd will probably be high enough to tempt them. But yes, 29 is too old for any team to offer a low first or high second considering he wants a longterm deal.

I'd give them a conditional 3rd, 2nd if we make the playoffs, 1st if we make the SB...

Oh man all of this gives me a bad feeling about this year. Here comes another 5-11 season... Quote:

I think the Giants organization is smart enough to realize that both of those scenarios are unlikely and wouldn't add much to the deal.

I'd give up our 2nd without a hesitation. Offer 5 years 50M with 25 guaranteed and backload a little to protect us. Zero question about this - he's worth the 2nd. Nobody is worth the money but if it is going rate (no way to I offer the 72m Johnson got) go for it.
edit: scratch that - if Wimbley can get 5 years 48M with 29m guaranteed, Osi will get the 72m.

Thanks....on the other hand the earlier reports said he refused to report....so what other conclusion should one draw based on the earlier reports??

then again we also gave up too soon on Mangini...
I was thinking that was a serious point until I read that part. I think it was recognizable 4 games into year 1 of Mangini, but thats just my opinion. Right now? They can give Schurmur 4 years or 4 days, it doesn't matter, because Mangini and the way this team dumps good players, and the constant ( how do you say, conditioning,) Losing! being used to losing, used to a 1-3 record, or Worse, has ruined a sane persons abiltiy to care. My give a hoot is busted. It is going to take a 10 win season to get my give a hoot back. some things rhyme with live a bit but that won't be a problem because I've been conditioned to lose hope this time of year, so fully expect a, another 2-7 start even with the tough games in December, January,
Chicago is on the pre-season schedule. I expect to see 27 different Browns injuries in the Chicago pre-season finale, including Colt Mccoy, and Peyton Hillis, most out for the season, I expect Phil Dawson will be injured , because they franchised him, and Marecic, because Vickers won't be back, one of Haden Ward or Sheard will be injured and probably Greg Little will be out for the season. Thats what I've been conditioned to think, because the bears pre-season game goes the same way every year and there is little they appear to do to keep it from happening. So until this team looks like it can win 7 games by halloween or mid november, I'm not going to live a bit, i'm going to expect the worst, because since 1995, thats what being a Browns fan is all about, that's what we are conditioned to do.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

I'd be less bothered if it was a top-flight player. Elite guy doesn't want to come to a bad team? That's understandable. He's good and he has a limited window of opportunity.
Guy who is mediocre and was probably going to be cut doesn't want to play for you? Bad, man...really bad.
Anyone who thinks that players around the league don't take notice of this type of thing is nuts.
Hmm,, I guess that's true also.. I was thinking more along the lines that we weren't missing much, but your thinking has merit also...

Two interesting reports Quote:
Aug. 01, 2011 7:40 p.m. - by Marty Gitlin - Is Bunkley damaged goods? The trading of DT Brodrick Bunkley from Philadelphia to Denver ends an unusual episode for the Browns. The Eagles had announced this weekend that they had dealt Bunkley to Cleveland. The Plain Dealer is reporting through a source that the Browns might have rejected Bunkley medically. Browns RapidReports
I think that was posted somewhere else,,,
and this tidbit

For everyone who is insisting that it was just a medical issue, let me RE-POST this statement FROM THE EAGLES' GM. Quote:
The Eagles' 2006 No. 1 pick, Bunkley was a no-show at camp and when reporters in Cleveland asked Browns general manager Tom Heckert where he was, Heckert, "Ask Philadelphia."
"I think that [Bunkley] enjoyed it a lot here and, I think, part of the reason was this all shocked him," Roseman said. "He's a first-round pick, I think he thought he'd be here for his whole career. I think he likes kind of the energy that's going on around here and he wanted to be a part of it."
Heckert was with the Eagles from 2001-2010, acting at the GM his last few years.

jmho...If Brodrick Bunkley does not want to be in Cleveland...I don't want him here.
It may be that he is dealing some personal issues, but one would think he would touch base with the guy who drafted him out of college...Heckert.
I've been doing a little digging on Bunkley and I found that he had his worst season as a pro last year, with only 17 solo tackles.
He hurt his elbow in the Eagles 5th game of the year...here is the story..
Reid: Eagles DT Bunkley likely lost for season with bad elbow
Updated: Oct. 11, 2010
Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid said Monday night that defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley needs elbow surgery and likely will miss the rest of the season.
Bunkley was injured during the Eagles' 27-24 victory Sunday night at San Francisco, and Reid revealed the extent of the lineman's injury on his radio show on WIP-AM.
"He had ligament damage in there," the coach said, according to the Eagles' official website. "The nerve to where your funny bone is, that nerve shifted, and so they have to go in and straighten it out. It's not a career-ending thing, but it's going to take time to get him back."
Bunkley was the 14th overall pick in the first round of the 2006 draft. He had nine tackles this season.
web page
Looking at the 2010 game logs...it looks as like Bunkley missed the next 3 starts then the Eagles had a bye week...and Bunkley played in the next 3 games, though his stats show just 1 tackle in each of those games.
...he missed the next game then played in the rest of the games for 2010.
It looks as though Bunkley was playing hurt for much of last season. I do not see anything that says Bunkley had the surgery Reid spoke of...he may have had the surgery, but I can't find a story on it.
The Browns need to be careful, making sure Bunkley is healthy and that he wants to play for Cleveland. "IF" there is any question concerning Bunkley's health or his desire to be in Cleveland...the Browns should pass on the deal.
I'm tired of malcontents who don't want to be in Cleveland...
...I would rather have an undrafted rookie DT who is busting his butt to make the team than some Pro who thought he deserved better than playing for the Browns.
If Bunkley did not want to be in Cleveland, he would not have showed up on Sunday.
As I posted, he was dealing with an elbow injury last season, so serious, Andy Reid thought he was lost for the season and Reid stated Bunkley needed surgery. I have not been able to confirm whether he ever had that surgery and believing maybe he didn't, because he continued to play after a layoff.
I'm sure the Browns were aware of the elbow injury and like all trades, his was contingent on the player passing his Cleveland physical. More and more, news of a player's physical status is kept confidential, at the request of the player.
...it is very likely, the reason the Browns did not report on Bunkley's physical status, was due to a request of confidentiality by Bunkley and/or his agent. That may have been the reason Heckert told reporters to check with the Eagles.
As with any deal, any NFL team can choose to accept a trade, even if the player has an issue. It may be that Denver was willing to take a chance on Bunkley when the Browns were not.
Bunkley could spread a story that he did not want to be in Cleveland, in an effort to shift the focus away from his physical status. The fact is, he was in Cleveland on Sunday and he was likely given a physical...we heard "nothing" about him not wanting to be in Cleveland up to that point on Sunday.
It's very likely the Browns viewed Bunkley's physical status as too risky to overlook. At that point, Bunkley became the Eagles problem and the Browns are sworn to secrecy due to "patient/player confidentiality".

It has been confirmed by multiple sources and the league office that after his physical the trade conditions had not been met and his status was reverted back to Philly. He reported to Cleveland and we gave him a physical. That has been confirmed. So it wasn't him not showing up because he didn't want to be in Cleveland.
Philly is going to say what they want to say because they were trying to unload damaged goods.

wake me up when we actually sign a FA that is going to improve this team.
Color me disappointed in how things have played out in the last 7 days. The one guy that i got a little excited about is gone before we even knew him. I tend to think he failed his physical, at least that is what i want to believe. The flip side is he did not want to be here, and maybe that explains why the browns are an estimated 30 mil under the cap with not much of anything to show for it in FA.
Even a blind squirrel will find a nut every now and then. Most of us can see the needs on this team, yet nothing has been addressed. We need d-line and corners for starters, unless we plan on the Savage/Crennel approach of just signing someone off the street and plugging them in...... That didn't work to well, can't see it working now either.

Imagine that, Philly trying to pull another fast one. Sheldon "downtown" Brown last year and Now Bunkly. WE are still desperately thin on dline. Lucky the injury was exposed fast which brings up another sore point.
Where is the Browns Due Diligence? Signing the oft dinged Donte Stallworth who became, not kidding, the first player i ever remember pulling up lame in warm ups and missing 6 weeks. He milked the ravens last year as Ravens fans looked to him as their missing deep threat last year. How about Tony Pashos, oft injured and tossed for that and mediocre play in SF, and Jacksonville and he immediately gets , surprise, Injured for us. If Bunkley was hurt who was using due diligence he was not healthy, is that legal to make such a trade in poor faith or is there some other news like Bunkly just did not want to come? Just seems we need to do better homework.

Those other players you mentioned passed their physical. Bunkley didn't. What due diligence are you talking about? They took chances on players with injury history that when they gave a physical were completely healthy. They later got injured.
Bunkley appears to have failed his physical which means he has an issue right now and possibly needs surgery or time off to fix/heal it.

One week into the 2011 spending spree under the new $120.4 million salary cap, 11 teams still have more than $20 million available for the coming season. A source with knowledge of the numbers has shared them with PFT.
Leading the way are the Bengals, with more than $41 million in cap room. The Jaguars have more than $34 million.
And the bronze goes, surprisingly, to the Browns, with more than $30.4 million.

You'd have to think we are going to try and lock up Joe Thomas at some point. Hillis I'm not so sure about.

There's nothing wrong with having 30 million in cap space right now... it's actually a good thing...
We can lock up our core players (Hillis, Thomas, Rubin) We're free to pick up anybody along the way (at a cheaper rate probably) And in 2-3 years, after we've built a TEAM through the DRAFT, we'll then have cap space to spend on your wonderful FA's...

Doesn't make any sense to resign Hillis now -- you'd have to expect (just from probability) that he'll regress towards the mean this season. We will probably save a few million by waiting and resigning next year.
Also - I like Franchise tags for RBs. They don't last that long anyway (especially a bruiser like Hillis), so one year contracts are a bargain.

Not to mention that Vickers, who made Jerome Harrison look like Tiki Barber, won't be blocking for him anymore as well as the fact that we'll probably be passing on 60%+ of plays.

I totally agree that there was no reason for the Browns to chase top FAs (on 5-6 year deals). They won't help us win this year, so paying big bucks didn't make sense.
But, in the next few days, we should be aggressively pursuing younger players on 2-3 year deals. Especially those we view as hit/miss type prospects. They won't cost us anything against the salary cap when we expect to be competitive (because if they miss we cut them), if they hit, then we've locked up a future piece who we can resign when we're hitting a competitive period a year or two down the road.

Why are you unsure about our greatest weapon last year?
Don't get me wrong, I love Hillis. But I don't think spending big money on running backs is the best plan. Especially one who takes as much punishment as Hillis. Running backs are very easy to find so I don't know if it is a great idea to pay them a bunch of money. Also, I would take a wait-and-see approach with Hillis. He has had one great year. Eventually, with continued success, yes I would to sign Hillis. But he is going to get a lot of money (DeAngelo Williams just got five years $43 million with $21 million guaranteed from the Panthers) and will probably wear down quickly.

Yup....money to spend and we essentially got bupkis.
I don't see how the FO went with the "lets not overspend because we need to worry about JT next year". JT will get taken care of either way (as long as he wants to stay). And I'd think his willingness to stay would improve if we weren't always 5-11 every season.
And if I was JT, I wouldn't sign an extension until I was a lot closer to free agency. Why sign a contract using this year's going rate for a left tackle? It will only be higher next year.
And one more thing, "build through the draft" is the same motto used by teams that don't re-sign their own high-priced talent. I'm not saying the Browns aren't planning on keeping JT....but if their philosophy is "draft over free agency" what does that say about where we'll be with JT, McCoy, Hillis & Haden?
“...Iguodala to Curry, back to Iguodala, up for the layup! Oh! Blocked by James! LeBron James with the rejection!”

That's the most questionable leap I've ever seen for someeone to take to attack the "build through the draft" idea...
Because we build through the draft, that means we're ganna let go of people WE DRAFTED? Come on now... Let's be serious...
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

Don't-re sign aging talent. Thomas will only be 27-years-old.
Also, if McCoy is the guy and you know it you re-sign him no matter what.

The reason the Steelers Defense has been so good for so long, is that they've always had the ability when somones getting a little older, to let them go, instead of over paying for them, and to plug a younger guy in their spot...

Completely agree. The Steelers have always re-signed their guys, as have the Colts and to an extent, the Patriots. It's one thing if JT is 31-years-old, but he's 26. He will be re-signed.

I think you guys are forgetting how no one will ever want to come here, as evidenced by Bunkley refusing to report, spitting in an envelope and mailing it to Heckert, and telling all of his friends that "the Browns are doody-heads."
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism
