$3.5 million is nothing for a guy with Edwards' talent. If he wasn't in legal trouble, I bet that he would have received at least twice that amount.

and don't forget it's without a decent QB. that just makes it all the better.
too bad Singletary seemed to straighten out Vernon Davis before he left town or we could have had some real fireworks on that team

Woodley is a good player and their best LB but this seems like an awful lot of $$$ for the LB spot Quote:
Steelers Pro Bowl linebacker LaMarr Woodley has signed a six-year, $61.5 million contract that is thought to be the second-highest deal in team history behind only Ben Roethlisberger's, a source familiar with the agreement told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Friday morning.
Woodley's deal will pay $18.1 million in the first year and $27 million over the first two, the source said.
The contract extension replaces the one-year, $10 million deal agreed to in February when the Steelers placed the franchise player tag on the fifth-year star. The team announced the deal Friday without detailing the pay involved.

I thought the Steelers were cap strapped and still needed to trim down like 11 million.

The Woodley deal actually saved them money because he was franchised, so his number for this year dropped.

I assume that is because whatever signing bonus he got will be split over the 6 seasons because his actual pay for this season went from $10mil to $18mil per the above link.

draft better players?
Or take care of the players you have, possibly ones in the final year of their rookie contract, who may or may not play on the OL.

That is what I assume as well. I didn't see the bonus amount, but PFT reported it would save them around $3.5 million this year.

haha. yeah. well, I assume that this contract won't even be a lowball offer for what Mr. Thomas is going to pull in as the best LT in the NFL.

Edwards better be on his best behavior this year. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/08/05/braylon-edwards-got-no-guaranteed-money/#commentsBraylon Edwards got no guaranteed money Posted by Michael David Smith on August 5, 2011, 11:58 AM EDT Some of the details are in on Braylon Edwards‘ contract with the 49ers, including how much guaranteed money he received: Zero. Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com reports that Edwards has a $1 million base salary, and no guaranteed money. The reported $3.5 million salary for 2011 is what Edwards will earn only if he reaches all his incentives, including catching 90 passes and making the Pro Bowl. The fact that Edwards gets no guaranteed money is huge: It means that if Edwards reveals himself to be more of a pain in the neck than he’s worth at any point during training camp or the preseason, the 49ers can cut him without having paid him anything. Edwards is a vested veteran, so his $1 million base salary will be guaranteed if he’s on the 49ers’ roster for Week One. Edwards’ contract is nowhere near as good as the one-year, $3.017 million deal Plaxico Burress got from the Jets, so it’s clear that the Jets view Burress — despite the fact that he’s been in prison the last two years — as an upgrade over Edwards. If Edwards is smart, he’ll take the lack of interest in him from around the NFL as a wakeup call. Edwards is one of the most talented wide receivers in football, and the fact that he had to settle for a contract with no guaranteed money shows that for NFL teams, the trouble Edwards brings with him outweighs the talent. Edwards becomes a free agent again in seven months. If the 49ers are lucky, he’ll be on his best behavior and motivated to earn a much more lucrative contract in 2012.

the Patriots spent draft picks and more $$$ on the older and declining Ochocinco (and remember how much Billy Boy loves him some draft picks). the Jets spent a bigger contract on a guy straight out of the joint. the Chiefs spent more on Steve Breaston (depending on incentives reached). the Seahawks preferred hip-injured Sidney Rice (though he is very talented) the Rams Mike Sims-Walker the Cardinals lost Breaston and only brought in Stuckey (for opposite Fitz) if I was his agent, then I would be pounding the above into his head and making darn sure he knew that he had to play his butt off and keep his nose clean for this season so he could get a real contract next year. i'd probably be fired for doing so though

Wow - I guess I shouldn't be too surprised that he got no guarenteed money - but wow...
I just can't imagine the niners being very good this year... I know they have a good coach now, but who in the right mind would think they could 'fix' Alex Smith... I think they should be in a decent position to go after Luck next year

Rogue is making an off-color joke. Let's move on.
As an aside, does anyone know the etymology of "off-color?" It sounds like it could be racist/offensive and nobody realizes it, like "gyp." Just curious.

off-color 1860, from off + color; originally used of gems; figurative extension to "of questionable taste, risqué" is Amer.Eng., 1860s. http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=off-color

Some of the things I have heard about Braylon lead me to believe that he is definately more of a San Fran kinda guy, if ya catch my drift.

Tough comparison... Woodley has played the last two years... Jackson hasn't....
before the injury I'd probably agree with you... we'll see how DQ looks this season... if he can return to form that'd be fantastic, but I'm not holding my breath right now....

Ditto.
The only thing that Jackson has over Woodley is number of tackles. Unfortunately, Jackson can't tackle for a loss .... or even a 5 yard gain.

J/C Explain the lowered interest in Edwards by a lot of teams? http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/08/10/ray-edwards-had-offseason-knee-surgery/We have a better idea now why the market for defensive end Ray Edwards was softer than expected in free agency. Falcons coach Mike Smith revealed that Edwards underwent “minor” knee surgery during the lockout, and will miss the team’s preseason opener. Edwards hasn’t participated in any live hitting during training camp. Edwards signed a five-year, $30 million contract, including $11 million guaranteed by the Falcons. That looked like a quality deal for Atlanta, but the injury explains why he didn’t make huge money. We wonder if any other teams except the Falcons were even interested. Edwards wasn’t tied to other squads during the free agent period.
