I said we would unofficially be out of the race by 8/12. That date is nearing and that is not the case.
Jason Kipnis 6 hr's in his first 16 games. Tonight vs Verlander should be tough, hopefully fun.

Its a shame when you think that they had the Rangers and the Red Sox in positions very late in games and could have swept them. If the bull pen would have performed like it did for the first half of the year we could be looking at a 9 game win streak. Shoulda woulda couldas....

It stinks about the games we blew against Boston and Texas....but Detroit can play the shoulda, coulda, woulda game to.
We're 2 games back and we play Detroit 4 times in the next 11 days. We can make a very big statement by winning these games.

i just love that if we can win tonight, we get to go play a series with minnesota, and detroit will go into a series with baltimore and verlander won't be pitching any of the games.
it would be a punch to the gut if the indians win today.

I love that when Detroit doesn't have Verlander on the mound, they have to put out guys like Fister, Penny, Scherzer, and Porcello (though he has had a couple nice stretches).
When the Tribe doesn't put Masterson on the mound, we still have Ubaldo, Tomlin, and even Huff and Carmona have pitched well since the Allstar break!
also, I am looking forward to Verlander cussing out Betemit when he has a bumbling error tonight. It's coming and it's going to be fantastic.

exactly!!! When should have had several more wins this past week - I'm hoping we can get it going in the next few weeks - we've done well against the tigers which we needed to! I don't think even if we sweep tonight that we're set, but this was a series that could have broke us

Meh...if you told me we'd take two from Detroit three days ago I'd jump at the offer.
And Carmona didn't give up. He battled.
I'll take this team over the Tigers the rest of the way.

I think it's a must they take care of business against the twins. with masterson and tomlin going, you would like to get a sweep. At the very least you have to take 2. Going up against some sub-par pitching in pavano, duensing, and slowey. No excuse losing to these guys.

Man ... so close to sweeping the Tigers.
I would much rather be 1 game back than 3 ..... but I think that we're close enough to overtake them.
I am hoping for a sweep against the Twins, but in reality, just winning series again is the key.

really impressed with how fausto handled himself tonight. rattled a bit early on but didn't let it get to him. even intervened with cabrera was chewing out santana.
the results aren't there, but the guy is getting better, and he's giving the team a shot at winning.
minnesota has pretty much mailed it in, i think they've gotta get this sweep and hope that baltimore can steal one, although we get the tigers at comerica very soon. that is going to be crucial (duh)

Yeah, that's the part that sucks. Busted our asses to win the first two and crap the bed in the third game. The first-inning error and the base-running mistake by Chis were crucial. Carmona battled, I'll give him that, but throwing a gem for 4 innings and throwing absolute garbage for two seems to be his MO in every outing, and if Kipnis doesn't bail him out on that amazing double play ball in the 4th I think it was, Detroit easily puts 7 on the board.

in terms of wins, no. but, Carmona has an ERA under 3 since the allstar break.
who knew all he needed to do was turn his ankle to become a competent pitcher again?

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS First Posted: August 12, 2011 - 10:59 am Last Updated: August 12, 2011 - 11:00 am
CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Indians have activated outfielder Shin-Soo Choo from the 15-day disabled list after he missed more than six weeks with a broken thumb.
Choo had been on the DL since June 25, one day after he was struck with a pitch by San Francisco's Jonathan Sanchez. Choo, who underwent surgery on the thumb, is batting .244 with five homers and 28 RBIs in 72 games. He played three games this week at Lake County (A) on a rehab assignment.
Choo is expected to be in the lineup Friday night, when the second-place Indians open a three-game series with Minnesota. Cleveland trails Detroit by three games in the AL Central.
To make room for Choo, the Indians designated veteran outfielder Austin Kearns for assignment. Kearns hit .200 (30 for 150) in 57 games for the Indians. He signed a one-year free agent contract with Cleveland in December.

Hopefully, we can get Choo's bat going. I'm not holding my breath for an immediate turnaround, but stranger things have happened...

Let's hope.
Just win series .... that's all they have to do. They don't have to win every single night ..... just win series.

9 games left against Detroit. If they can go 6-3 (we are 6-3 so far this year vs. Detroit despite an 0-2 record against Verlander), then we just need to do better than them in the rest of the games.

I went to the Captains game last night. Choo grounded out twice, struck out once & had an RBI fielder's choice. He did make a few nice catches in RF though.
Joe Thomas made Justin Timberlake change his name. He didn't want wusses to have the same initials...

combined with Ubaldo having his velocity at his normal rates the first 2 starts, it's always good to hear positive things Quote:
• Teams such as the Yankees clearly backed off their pursuit of Ubaldo Jimenez last month because of concerns he might be hurt. But a source familiar with the Indians' physical of Jimenez reported his MRI came back "remarkably clean" -- cleaner, in fact, than those of many pitchers who are considered completely healthy.
• The Indians always recognized the risk involved in trading four players for a pitcher such as Jimenez. They also saw more than just a rare opportunity to deal for a top-of-the-rotation arm who fits into their budget through 2013. They saw an opportunity to acquire a pitcher whose contract runs through what should be his peak years -- and lines up with their window to win. They have Asdrubal Cabrera and Shin-Soo Choo under control through 2013; Grady Sizemore and Travis Hafner under control through 2012; and Justin Masterson and Chris Perez under control through 2014. So their time is now -- and over the next two years. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/page/rumblings110812/mlb-postseason-problems-revisited

Thr Tribe comes back late again, scoring 2 in the bottom of the 8th to win the opener with Minnesota 3-2.
Another excellent start for Masterson.
1st game of the series is in the books, now let's get game 2 and ensure a series win.

Great win tonight. Too bad Detroit held on against the O's.
I want the Cleveland Browns to be my pallbearers so they can let me down for the last time.

honestly not surprising we both struggled with lesser teams after the series we just had. a bit of an emotional letdown is to be expected.
now, we need to go assert ourselves tomorrow.

flipping channels landed me on Houston v. LAD. talk about a friggin' pillow fight game.
short version: Dodgers get bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th - no outs. SO, ground out (force at home), ground out.
all very weak.

I like the chances for a sweep with Huff going today since Minny's big boppers - Mauer, Morneau, & Thome - are LH. Still, I wouldn't mind seeing Thome get a couple solo dingers to reach 600 HR, in an 11-2 loss to the Featherheads. Be nice if he got a big ovation in what might be one of his last appearance at the Jake.

Meh, let him get his 600HR in Detroit. I'd rather win 11-0.
