I'm not one who typically asks for this sort of thing, but...
Tomorrow morning my beautiful 5-year-old niece will be going to the children's cardiac center at the Cleveland Clinic to undergo open-heart surgery to correct an ASD (atrial septal defect...basically a hole between the atria of her heart). It was discovered a couple weeks ago during a follow up appointment for an apparent heart murmur. She will be seeing one of the top surgeons in the world and for that we're grateful. So, if you can spare a moment to include her in your thoughts during this very trying time for my family (especially for my folks, who are her legal parents), it would be very much appreciated...thanks!

Man, that's rough for someone so young to have to go through.
I hope for all the best for a successful outcome.

Thanks for the thoughts, everyone. My wife and I are off to the Clinic shortly to join my parents for the long wait. I will try to post an update from my phone this afternoon, as estimated surgery time is 4-6 hours.
Thanks again.

Thanks again, everyone.
We just met with the surgeon. Her ASD has been successfully repaired and she is off the heart-lung machine. Everything was as expected, no surprises. They're closing her up and then off to PICU for recovery. We are so relieved!

Having been standing helplessly by as a child you love is operated on (luckily in my case, it was very minor surgery), I can understand how relieved you must be.
Great news, and here's to a speedy recovery!!

My wife and I left the Clinic around 2:30. Our niece is in her room in the PICU recovering. She's asleep and they're hoping to remove her breathing tube this afternoon. She should be in a normal recovery room tomorrow and hopefully home by the end of the week.
Thanks again for the thoughts and well-wishes...it means a lot.

glad everything is good.
it's kinda weird because i was just talking to my boss about that, not too long ago. her husband had it done in the late 70's when he was in his 20's. he was born in the south and with healthcare back then, they missed it when he was a newborn.

No problem. I know what it's like to to have a young child go through major surgery. Hope everything goes without an issue for the poor girl.

Just a quick update. My wife and I went to the Clinic for a couple hours tonight. She has all of her tubes and stuff removed aside from a device that monitors her heartbeat (I think) and is in a regular room in the pediatric department now. She was doing arts and crafts with a med student in the play room at the Ronald McDonald house when we arrived, then we all went back to her room where she colored pictures a little bit and watched some of Finding Nemo. If the doctors are satisfied with her progress she could be cleared to go home as early as tomorrow! Certainly by this weekend barring any complications that might arise. Looks like she may only have to miss the first week of kindergarten, but my folks have lined up a tutor that will keep her up to speed with her classmates. What a relief!

Hopefully this is my last update about my niece, because I just got off the phone with my dad and she was discharged from the hospital earlier today and got home around 6:30 this evening. I can't help but feel overwhelmed by how quickly everything has gone..it truly is a modern miracle. Thanks again from me and my family for the thoughts and well-wishes!

Good news! Thank God for the doctors and nurses. Best wishes to your niece!
(on a side note - while it's scary as hell for people to go under the knife, we need to remember that the doctors do that stuff every day. I only say that because a friend of mine had a similar situation with his daughter. They went to U of M. He was a wreck - and out of no where I said "look - this doctor is one of the best. He does this surgery almost every day. To us, this is huge - to him, it's routine. Your daughter will be fine. Gotta trust him.)
Anyway, I'm glad for your niece!

Indeed. From the time that we learned that she'd have to have surgery, I had to continually remind myself that she'd be in the hands (literally) of some of the best in the world. We're lucky as hell to have the Clinic right here in our back yard.
