... For Tightwad Tippers

Wednesday, August 17, 2011 7:37 am

Written by: Ben Maller

Tiger Woods might never return to the top of the World Golf Rankings, but at least the disgraced former star has earned a No. 1 ranking in something.

Woods, despite a net worth of $500 million, is the worst celebrity tipper in America. Eldrick's excuse: He never carries cash. Woods is said to have made a woman in Las Vegas tip for him when they went out. While playing $10,000-a-hand blackjack, Tiger re-pocketed a $5 tip after realizing he tipped her early in the night.

"The same names kept coming up again and again," Klein says.

LeBron James was one of them. The King was given a gift from the gods in the form of basketball talent, but leaving a gratuity is a different story. James, with a net worth of $120 million, turns into a cheapskate when the bill arrives. The Miami Heat star is ranked fourth on the New Times list, thanks in part to a generous $10 tip on a $800 bill from a Cleveland steak house he made stay open until 4 a.m.

Top Ten Cheapest Celebrity Tippers

1.) Tiger Woods: Claims he never carries cash.
2.) Madonna: Once left an $18 tip on a $400 bill.
3.) Barbra Streisand: Famous for leaving $10 tip for $457 tab.
4.) LeBron James: Didn't ever get tipping talents, left $10 on an $800 bill.
5.) Jeremy Piven: Left signed Entourage DVD as tip.
6.) Usher: Once left his autograph as a tip.
7.) Mariah Carey: Famous for diva demands and no tips!
8.) Sean Penn: Left $0 on a $450 tab in New Orleans.
9.) Bill Cosby: Once left a $3 tip on a $350 bill
10.) Rachael Ray: Promotes less than 20 percent tip on her show.

This stuff really irks me. I make almost nothing compared to these people and I still make sure to take care of the people that rely on this for their income. How can a guy/girl that makes $30-100 million a year not give the valet a C-note as a nice jesture is beyond me. I know I'd enjoy doing it....sure, it can look like you're a star-studdedhDB that wants to draw attention to himself but come on. Don't be a jerk.

I remember hearing about Tiger being cheap a long time ago. Oh well...karma got him back (or just his bad decisions came back to nail him).

You always have to take these things with a grain of salt.

For example, Piven at 5 comes from the popular rumor that he was banned from Nobu for tipping a signed Entourage DVD. I can tell you with 100% certainty that the incident in question never happened. Entirely fabricated.

Then again, I know some incidents listed that did, in fact, happen.

i've heard second hand from a friend who has family that owns an establishment in akron that tiger didn't tip. funny that this article basically says he leaves nothing.

the lebron stuff came out in cleveland too. seems like people put up with it until he did what he did, then the floodgates opened up.

also from a cleveland perspective, heard from several people that albert belle was an excellent customer and tipper.

But, do you know for a fact that piven is listed at #5 because of some incident at some nobu - or nubu?

Is it possible, phil, that piven did that somewhere else? Left a signed whatever - not at nobu - but somewhere else? Can you say as "fact" that didn't happen?

Just wondering.

Actually, now that I think about it - if you can say it with 100% certainty - that means you were there - the waiter? Part of his entourage?

I can confirm this first hand, ALbert did a autograph show at a Hockey arena I was a manager of and I ended up being his assistant for the 4 hours he was there. He gave me two one hundred dollar bills at the end of show. As much as his reputation was for being a jerk, he was actually a real cool down to earth guy.

Given that the article says outright that he's listed at #5 because of the singular incident at Nobu, I'd say it's unlikely.

Quote:

5. Jeremy Piven, according to Zimbio, showed up at Nobu in Aspen with a party of 12 -- without a reservation. After being seated and served, Piven reportedly told the manager: "Thanks for nothing," and left a signed Entourage DVD as the tip -- which is at least a bit more generous than an autograph. According to the story, a Nobu employee hurled the box at Piven as he was leaving, and Piven was banned from ever returning to Nobu. Sounds like something Ari Gold, his Entourage character, might do. The act earned Piven the number one "worst tipper" on Zimbio's list of ten worst tippers, number two on thefrisky.com, and at or near the top on most others. We would have placed him higher, but he doesn't make as much money as most folks on this list, and it's just one incident.

My ex brother-in-law was waiting tables at Applebees when he was left a $1 on a $90 check... So he runs out into the parking lot and catches the guy, gives his dollar back to him and tells him he obviously needs it more than he(my brother-in-law) does.

Wow, with the possible exception of Rachel Ray, this whole list is politically liberal and all concerned about "the little guy"... I guess that doesn't apply to people actually working like a wait staff and it doesn't apply to their money.

I think it all depends on the situation. Obviously these guys make a ton fo money,a nd tipping should never be a problem. They should leave in accordance to their bill, and give what the server earned, no doubt. I just get tired of the servers who feel they have "earned" a tip by simply taking your order. Taking the order is their job, the tip is earned with how well you treat the customers while they are there. If the bill is $500 but the server was never around and didn't seem to care, that doesn't earn them a $100 tip just because the bill was $500.

That said, I'm sure that most servers go the extra mile when there is someone there that is famous or is ordering a lot and spending money. These people who get good service and still don't tip are ridiculous.

I was just wondering if these stellar types wouldn't have "people" to take care of such mundane details as paying tabs and tipping servers. I was also wondering if these designated "people" might not be stiffing the servers and pocketing the tip money for themselves. On the other hand it might just be because some of the people on that list can't even do long division, much less percentages.

It would take a lot for me to leave no tip at all. I mean ... the server would have to have been down right rude, ignorant, and disgusting to get no tip.

I have left less than a 15% tip on a rare occasion ...... but that was for really poor service. Hell, I can even excuse somewhat poor service if the server apologizes and you can tell he or she is trying their best. That's not their fault. However, I have been to restaurants where the server acted like we were an intrusion, or one that wanted to spend her entire time there talking to a guy that I assume was her boyfriend ......

Those type I leave less than 15%.

I generally leave 20% for good service, and 25% for excellent service. (usually along with a note on the bill)

yeah, my sister waited tables at Applebee's in Akron when LeBron was in HS. she never liked him because he was rude to the staff and didn't tip (though that was before he had 'real' money).

i think the list itself is silly though. having 1 singular item that makes TMZ or whatever gossip blog does not necessarily mean you are a bad tipper in general.

I agree. My mother was a waitress for years when I was growing up and I respect servers a great deal. It is a very hard job, and 95% of them deserve a good tip. I try to tip 20%, and maybe a little extra if the service was very good.

The 5% that kill me though are the ones that don't come back or act like they don't care, or as you said, will stand at another table and talk for 10 minutes while I wait for something I asked them for when I ordered my food, like rnach or something of that nature.

My neighbor growing up childhood friends owns a bar in Akron where LBJ held his 20th birthday party. The place had its staff on demand for him and his guests. Spent most of the evening there drinking, etc... LBJ and entourage left without paying a tip. Guy was mad because his entire staff was basically just serving him and his crew that he banned him from ever coming back.

I wonder if this is a result of the way these people are catered to 24 hours a day 7 days a week? They are so taken care of everywhere they go that they don't even recognize any more when somebody is providing them good service.. somebody that could really use that $100 tip.

I will say, on the other hand you have people like Drew Carey who has been known to drop $100 tip on a $8 plate of pancakes... so those people are out there too.

When I was at Maryland I waited on a group at the Hilton restaurant, it was a rap recording label that was in DC to try to sign this young rapper. There were 11 at the table and with all of the food they ordered and the Dom that flowed their check ended up being over $4,000. They left me a $1,000...

I also waited on Huey Lewis back when he was a big name, it was just breakfast but the check for his table of 4 was $42 and he left me a $20.

Yeah, I haven't carried cash since about 1999 when I first started doing direct deposit and I still manage to pay at least $20%. And I'll be lucky to make what he makes for one golf event in my life time.

I have heard that Drew Carey is just crazy with his tips.

That's the way I'd be if I was pulling down millions per year. Hell, why not make someone's week. It would really cost relatively little.

With his reputation...if you were a bellhop and he pulled up, wouldn't you just walk by his stuff? Same goes for be a waitor for lepuke...just refuse to server him.

I know that I almost always tip 20%, even if the service is bad. But, that's more just because it's easy for me to do the math.
