I thought Mangini was let go too soon, as well... until I began reading stuff that hinted at a 'disconnect' between his philosophy and the Top Brass'. If that's the case, then handing him his walking papers was the absolute right thing to do. I didn't take the FO to task, however... keeping in mind (as I always try to do) that we fans NEVER know everything.

I didn't even flinch when they hired Pat Shurmer... because by then, I'd decided to just sit back and watch "the process" (hehehe) before developing an opinion abiout it. I'm glad I did... it seems that there is now some cohesion between the office and the grass.

It's still very early in the H3 era, and only time will tell... but so far, I like most of what I see.

"Joe is a steady guy , which you need from an offensive lineman," he said.

When Shurmer said that about Robo a big deal was made on here about "steady" and how mundane and average that is.

Then to finish the quote,

Quote:

"He's a guy that comes out here every day and works. Every once in a while he can be vocal, I wouldn't say that's his nature to just be exerting himself verbally.

Apparently to Shurmer being a "steady guy" is a good thing.

Apparently, Shurmur isn't very verbose..

To him "steady" is what the best player on the team is. So does that mean that everyone else he describes as steady is solid as well? My guess,, yeah...

Good move...Rubin has to be locked down next...I'm not so quick on Hillis...not that I dont like him, he's great...we all know...but he's a RB.....he's makingminimum right now, so he has not all the leverage in the world...3-4years at a reasonable price is what I would offer

With Hillis, maybe we sign him to a longer deal and front load it to get his cap number down quickly (if possible). That way, if he peters out in a couple years, it doesn't kill us salary-wise.

Or maybe Shurmur isn't one to praise any one person on the team.

I had coach's who refused to single out any one player and praise him as being exceptional even though we as players knew where the talent was. They treated the "scrubs" the same as he treated the "stars".

That's more than likely the case.. Coaches like you describe would say nothing rather than say something detrimental about the player.,, But to use the word "steady" to describe Thomas AND Robo,,, sounds like he means it for both.

Hey,, Cut down day is right around the corner.. Almost anyone could be gone.. So we'll see if he really likes or dislikes Robo.

Excellent job FO.....Joe needed to stay put, I'm not gonna compare him to Dieken or a Cody Risen, but he should be up there when it's all said & done.

Now lets continue to build this team around him...

Good job Browns organizations, we stepped up for one of our own.

I think we are doing just what Heckert said we were going to do and sign our own, at least those who we (they) like.

The Chargers have taken pretty much the same route and by doing so you also keep the continuity that is so under appreciated these days.

Off topic; but it's good to see some posters come out of the woodwork for this news

Here's what makes Joe so great! He even played last year hurt and still didn't miss a game!

Steve Doerschuk Sporting News
Text size A A A

BEREA, Ohio — Doug Dieken, who was a Cleveland Browns left tackle for more than a decade, says Joe Thomas played part of 2010 with an elbow problem. Still, Dieken says, Thomas playing one-armed is more than most tackles at full go.

The Cleveland brass agrees and then some, having given Thomas a seven-year contract extension that could be worth $84 million. Thomas has had a quiet, workmanlike camp. He should be more effective than he was in 2010 because he is healthier, but even then, he earned his fourth straight trip to a Pro Bowl and made All-Pro a second straight year.

Thomas uses superior technique, long arms and relentless effort to protect Colt McCoy’s blind side. He is not a mauling run blocker but is plenty strong and uses quickness and technique to be effective.

Meanwhile, center Alex Mack has made a quick transition to the West Coast offense. It is more a matter of adjusting to a new set of plays than substantially different footwork and technique.

That’s because his position coach, George Warhop, was one of the few coaches retained from the Eric Mangini regime. Mack made everybody’s all-rookie team in 2009 and went to the Pro Bowl as an alternate after his second season. He has a wide body that is hard for nose tackles to move and is very smart, which makes him effective at adjusting protections. McCoy has not been sacked in two preseason games.

Notes: Running back Peyton Hillis sat out Tuesday’s practice with a back issue two days after missing a practice with a hamstring concern. The back problem isn’t expected to keep him out of Thursday’s game at Philadelphia. ... Nothing has come of rumblings about 32-year-old Sheldon Brown moving to safety because he might be slowing down. The Browns still view him as a solid starting cornerback with rare leadership skills. Thursday represents his first trip back to Philadelphia since he joined the Browns last year. He never missed a game with the Eagles from 2002-09.

J/C,

Evan Moore &
Ryan Pontbriand ...
In addition to Hillis and Rubin are other core players (I think) who will be UFA at the end of the year.

I hope so, but not as far as I know.

A good LS can play for 15 plus years and their as much of a core player as a kicker or punter is imo.

I know Moore is just signed for one year, but I hope if he plays well we reward him with a 6-7 year deal as well before he reach's the market ... I think it would be wise, because Colt sure looks for him especially in the redzone.

We did. Through 2011.

I had the same thought initially, but it turns out that extension was a while ago.

Those that think it was all about the money with Joe, couldn't be more wrong. With his skills, he could have waited, gone FA and gotten as much or more money for moving.. He could have very easily picked whatever team he wanted so he'd no doubt have picked a winner.

But he chose to remain with the Browns. He clearly wanted to be here..

We would franchise him for 2 years. He wasn't going anywhere until then.

Glad to see he's happy here and sees some light at the end of the tunnel.

Edit: I don't have to edit my sig!

My prediction for Rubin is something like 6 years, 6-6.5 million per. Call it a hunch.

6 mil per? Really? He's good, but I dunno about that...
