The big roster cuts will not come until next weekend, but teams do need to trim their rosters to 80 by Tuesday.

These cuts won’t include many big names for the most part. Cleveland released eight on Sunday and you probably won’t recognize any of the names.

Here goes: defensive lineman Kyle Anderson, defensive lineman Jabari Fletcher, defensive back Darian Hagan, wideout Johnathan Haggerty, defensiv back Brett Johnson, wideout Juan Nunez, kicker Jeff Wolfert, and quarterback Troy Weatherhead.

Weaherhead never got a snap in preseason, so you knew he'd go first cuts. Don't need a camp arm any longer. Fletcher had been hurt the whole time, and Nunez hasn't seen the field, and we don't need no stinkin' kicker. So pretty much on par. The next set will be more interesting....

Haggerty going means were pretty comfortable with our WRs then as they are, Mitchell's roster spot got a little more comfortable.

Also, LJ Castile and Chris Matthews just got closer to our PS

also....

does anyone else think its weird how roster cutdowns work?

it used to be from 80 to 75 to 53...now 90 to 80 to 53

wouldnt it make a TON more sense to go like 90 - 70 - 53...or something more evenly spaced

I don't understand why they don't just cut go from 80 to 53, why are these cuts necessary?

I would image it is so teams that see a player they liked in their system in the first wave of cuts could pick them up and have week with them in practice to find out what the player is all about before final cuts.

Only recognized Hannerty. We will bebetter with more reps for the keepers. But the numbers are weird. Will we wait to do pickups until into the season? And do cuts include PS members? I mean are they non-roster once they are moved?

I agree, this extra week could give one of these guys a chance to get a look from another team before the final cuts and we probably won't be singing the to our PS. No real surprises.

Other then the LBer position I think we can pretty much stay in house to fill out our PS too.

Every team wants a chance to see the young players, they pretty much know most of their starters during TC and preseason games, but never know who might look good as depth or PS/future reference.

Also, I thought with the new CBA that a 54th roster spot was available? I could swear I heard that in the news.

I know the game day roster size went from 45 to 46 (while eliminating the "emergency QB" provision). I don't know about the overall roster size, though. I don't think that's changed, but I could be wrong.

Teams can have 46 active on gameday ...... if the 46th player is their 3rd QB. I would assume that the NFL has rules that the 3rd QB must take the majority of his practice snaps at QB and other similar stipulations.

If the team does not carry a 3rd QB, then they can only have 45 players active on gameday.

The rule disqualifying the starting and backup QBs once the 3rd string guy enters the game has been eliminated.
