Browns claim Cousins

The Ravens waived tackle Oniel Cousins on Saturday, giving up on the 2008 third-round pick.

The Browns gladly gave Cousins a new home.

We’ve confirmed that the Browns have secured Cousins’ rights via the league’s waivers system. No other team submitted a claim for Cousins, who appeared in every game last season for Baltimore.

The move was first reported by Aaron Wilson of Scout.com.

Cousins, who couldn’t survive the cuts from 90 to 80 in Baltimore, now must quickly persuade the Browns that he should survive the cuts from 80 to 53.

My heart sank when I read this headline...I thought it meant Terry Cousins.

I would rather have signed Kissin Cousins

I'll wait to see if he actually makes the team..

That or he's a short term fill in until Steiny returns.... really, I can't tell which and they aren't talking yet.

But do we get a roster exemption ? That was my question, because we are supposed to be at 80 and his signing would put us at 81.

Well, there is plenty of fodder to get rid of, so I'd say it has nothing to do with roster size at the moment.. Steiny doesn't have to be the one that is put on IR or released or whatever to make room for Cousins... There are others that can go without us missing a beat.

I don't know the answer to your question..

I got curious and went to a Ravens board to check what their fans were saying about the move. It seems he was not a popular cat there and people saw his departure as long overdue. All potential, no payoff. Decent run blocker but horrible in pass protection.

Then I closed their site and took a shower...

Ugh...Ravens.

could be one of the younger guys being placed on the PUP list. should be about that time in camp that we start adding people to the regular season PUP (unless it was changed in the CBA).

Na'il Diggs-Don't know much about him. Says he is 33 yrs. old. Diggs is one of the few names out there that I recognize from the first group of cuts. I don't know if he fits our scheme or not.

33 and coming off a torn pec? Pass.

1 player returning from a torn pec per team is my rule.

What others do you have?

They Drafted a Tackle, but got a Guard.
He had only been playing there this training camp and he even started at RG in the preseason for them.

There could be more to the story that we are not hearing.

We Drafted Pinkston who was a Tackle but projected him to guard. (similar body types)

Had we forced him to try and be our RT, maybe just maybe there would be a different outlook and expectations, then we have with him possible starting at LG.

Maybe because they like the guy we have?

Just a guess on my part ...... but the evidence seems to support it ........

Plus, overall he's done a pretty damn good job so far.

McGee's NET average of 43.9 yards per punt is 5th in the NFL so far in the preseason...

Not a lot. He's an aging player who wants a new deal.

considering our youth movement: not much
considering how scared I am of our WOLB spot: a little more than not much

I don't know. LBs tend to not get much in trades. I would think the most they can expect is a 4th rounder that could potentially escalate to a 3rd rounder. I probably would want to do a 5th rounder that can escalate to a 4th rounder though.

I dunno. He wants the moon ..... so that could be a problem.

Plus, this front office seems to stay completely away from older players. They want youth, and that's all. I can't see them going after anyone on the wrong side of 30.

DeAndre McDaniel Released

http://www.nola.com/saints/index.ssf/2011/08/safety_deandre_mcdaniel_tweets.html

In a sign that the New Orleans Saints have already made their cuts today, former Clemson safety DeAndre McDaniel posted on his Twitter account that he has been cut. McDaniel was an undrafted free agent who was a long shot to make the roster.

Saints release starting DE Alex Brown

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcsouth/post/_/id/24292/saints-stunner-alex-brown-released

Surprising news out of New Orleans. Defensive end Alex Brown, who has worked with the first team throughout the preseason, sent out a tweet saying he’s been released.

Consider that a sign that the Saints are pleased with the progress of first-round draft pick Cameron Jordan. Brown had been starting opposite Will Smith, who could serve a suspension for testing positive for a banned substance in 2008. Even though there is uncertainty about Smith’s situation, the Saints must feel good about Jordan and some of their other defensive ends.

Veteran Jeff Charleston has been a steady backup, and the team likes what Turk McBride has shown in the preseason. The release of Brown could also help Junior Galette’s chances of staying on the roster.

The release of Brown comes with no salary-cap implications. He was scheduled to make $3 million in base salary and had no outstanding roster bonus pro-rations. His release clears up $3 million in cap space.

Teams have to have rosters down to 80 players by the end of the day and there have been some smaller moves around the division.

The Carolina Panthers released second-year quarterback Tony Pike and offensive lineman Duke Robinson. The Panthers also placed guard Geoff Schwartz and tight end Gary Barnidge on the injured reserve list.

The Saints haven’t announced any official moves yet, but receivers John Chiles and Jarred Fayson reportedly have been released.

Earlier in the day, New Orleans safety DeAndre McDaniel tweeted that he had been released.

Stay tuned. We’ll update you with any official announcements from teams as they come. But Saturday is the main day for roster cuts. That’s when teams have to go from 80 players to 53.

I see the Broncos released a guy that mirrored Mangini's ineptness for judging talent..David Veikune.
I think the bust from Hawaii should look across the border for work. He can't cut it in the NFL.

Id be interested in Brown and Tony Pike...Pike could be better than Brown, and Carolina is a QB wasteland

I believe one of the comments I had read on Pike is that he makes Charlie Frye's arm strength seem good.

Colts | Anthony Gonzalez understands he could be cut
Wed, 31 Aug 2011 10:41:02 -0700

Indianapolis Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez (hamstring) said he understands there is a chance he will not make the final roster. Gonzalez said his injury history likely would contribute to the team's choice to release him if they decide to make that move. The team could save around $1 million in salary cap space if they released Gonzalez.

Now granted, last two years have been derailed by injury but he looked pretty good at time with the Colts. That being said, having Manning throwing to you surely helps but thoughts?

often injured and while he looked okay with Peyton throwing to him he didn't look nearly as good as Collie or Garcon did last year.

i'd pass on him (i'm very worried about the Peyton-factor making their WRs look much better than they really are).

I will say that I am a complete homer having gone to high school with him, BUT

He runs routes very well and is always in the right spot. If healthy, I would definitely bring him in for a look.

Gonzalez would be a very good no. 2 WR. But, we already have about 6 of those.

yeah, if he is healthy, he is a good player, good route runner and good hands. But if he is healthy, i don't see the colts cutting him..... He's had some bad luck the last couple of years.
