Between what I heard on ESPN radio just now and this article, looks like we've just entered the worst-case scenario w/ Steinbach . . .

Cleveland Browns expected to place guard Eric Steinbach on IR today

Tuesday, August 30, 2011, 1:01 PM
By Mary Kay Cabot, The Plain Dealer

BEREA, Ohio - Browns starting left guard Eric Steinbach will most likely be placed on the NFL's Injured Reserve list by 4 p.m. today, a league source told The Plain Dealer.

Steinbach, who has started the past four seasons for the Browns, is suffering with a disk problem in his back and has missed the past two preseason games.

One of the options Steinbach is exploring is surgery.

The leading candidate to replace Steinbach is rookie fifth-round pick Jason Pinkston out of Pittsburgh. He started last week's preseason game in Philadelphia.

The Browns added to their offensive line depth by being granted Oneil Cousins off waivers from the Ravens. The deal was officially announced this morning and Cousins worked at backup right takckle in practice today.

John Greco also worked with the first team at right tackle as Tony Pashos was idle and watched from the sidelines.

Wonder what Pashos injured this time? Braxton get ready cause Greco isn't even serviceable at guard.

Well, here's where we get to see true Browns fans.

Our starting guard is going to IR, so our entire season is down the tubes.

You know, instead of saying "ok, that sucks, but what are we going to do about it?"

I seem to remember many people complaining about Steiny a lot last year....so an older Steiny this year would have to be worse. I don't know, I thought he was kind of old anyway...right?

Oh well. Most teams have already put a guy or two on IR. We're no different. Pick up the pieces and move along. No excuses.

OL just got seriously weaker.

Sorry if that's too realistic, but it's the truth. A rookie or some trash from another team will be starting there.

And with Pashos on the other side, can only double team so much.

If our biggest preseason loss is Eric Steinbach to the IR, then actually color me excited. I figured that with the shortened offseason and all the hoopla going with it that we'd lose more players through the preseason. If Steinbach and BJax being our only injuries lasting PAST the preseason I'm okay with that, i know we've been dinged up but it seems like we've survived.

Losing Steinbach will hurt, but it seems as though Pinkston can help us out and in fact get us younger and improve our running game. Now if he can pass block (which he is a strong guy and im sure can handle at least stonewalling guys, plus he has help from 2 of the best at their positions on either side) we'll be okay. A lot of our pass rushing issues from a year ago came from the interior left side, so this may actually work out to our benefit, and perhaps allow us to save some money going forward, and free up money elsewhere to go get a WR, or a LB or pay our own guys more. Give Josh a bigger contract, and so on and so forth.

Our biggest issue here is that our G dept just got thinner and with Pinkston in, so did our backup T spots...

That being said, if Branndon Braxton continues to be a stalwart there we're fine. If John Greco can be serviceable we'll be fine there, and i tend to believe that he will be a fine backup. and if Steve Vallos can be a serviceable center backup, we'll be fine.

Another OL injury doesnt help, but we still have serviceable backups, this just makes for one less cut we have to make. Now depending on how Oneil Cousins is...we'll see how it goes.

No major worries, just a chance for us to clear up some of the future really

I'm sure you're right about a lotta folks, but I'm far from throwing in a towel.

If Pinkston has to learn the ropes in handling the left side on the fly, at least he's between Thomas & Mack . . .

AND we don't have to worry about Baltimore and Pittburgh until the end of the season.

Oy.. a rookie 5th rounder is starting the season. This is not the best news I've heard today.

I think we need to be careful with too much speculation about him going on IR.

Yeah, it seems all signs are pointing that way, but until we get an actual confirmation, I'm not going to say it's a done deal.

great great point. whoever takes that spot will have time to get used to it before dealing with both of those defenses.

you can say that for the whole team, the scheduling benefits the browns unbelievably this year. they get 11 games to install their new systems before dealing with the top dogs in their division who happen to be top dogs in the league.

The guy was great in zone blocking but he wasn't much of a blocker in an inline blocking scheme. His pass protection was decent but he was incredibly vulnerable to the bull rush and he was below average on his best day as a run blocker. What he did do well, was get out in front and block on reverses and end arounds and screen, plays in which he could use his mobility.

The only thing it really hurts is chemistry and that will take a few games to develop. Bottom line, we drafted his replacement this year who happens to be bigger and stronger and a better fit for this blocking scheme.

That's too bad for Steinbach. Great player and he seems like a great guy too.

Maybe we didn't like what we have seen form Pashos so far in preseason and we might not be sold on Braxton either. I don't know?

Lets see our depth at OG now is Greco and Murray (and Murray has been working with the second team at Center).

First Billy Yates retires then we lose Stieny and now our depth is pretty thin at OG.
and RT is still a concern.

by Marty Gitlin - Cousins pickup unrelated to Steinbach situation - Coach Pat Shurmur said the pickup of OL Oniel Cousins had been planned after he was released by the Ravens and was unrelated to the potential loss for the season of LG Eric Steinbach. Cousins played RT in his first practice with the Browns.

I really thought that people liked Pashos up until this past game.

I know he was held out of practice today, but I think it's just him getting a little break.

I'm only speculating, but I thought he looked pretty shaky vs. the Eagles. Certainly there is room for improvement.

Oh, I agree. Pashos struggled against Philly. I just thought people thought he was solid against GB and Detroit. If that's the case, then maybe he just had a bad game. It happens.

All I know is if we have to move Greco to RT, then our depth is basically depleted at guard.

Well, it's official:

Left guard Eric Steinbach had successful surgery to repair a disc problem in his back, but the Browns will place him on injured reserve today, coach Pat Shurmur said.

"He was a starter, so we're gonna have to make some decisions to see who plays left guard for us," Shurmur said. "So we'll be going through that process."

Steinbach left practice on Aug. 17 with the injury and has been sidelined since. Rookie Jason Pinkston, a fifth-round pick, has replaced Steinbach as the starting left guard. Steinbach did not miss an offensive snap during the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

"He’s been incredibly durable," left tackle Joe Thomas said. "He’s been a huge asset to our offense, so it is a big blow not having him out there. But it’s the 'next-man-in' mentality. We’ve gotta have somebody step up there. Hopefully it’ll be Pinkston."

Shurmur said the team's decision to claim offensive lineman Oniel Cousins off waivers wasn't related to Steinbach's status. Cousins served as a backup right tackle during practice today.

In a sick way, I *hope* it is, but only because Pinkston comes in, lights it up, and we have our LG of the future.

But, best wishes to Steinbach in his recovery. Hopefully he can come back 100%.

Sad, but not devastating. We plug the hole and move on. Pinkston needs to step up, end of story. It's not like he hasn't been getting reps there anyway. Rather see Steiny take care of himself than come back early and get permanently injured.

Get well soon!

Is that a suttle hint by Joe? Not very often you here a player say the name of the guy they would like in there.

As far as Steinbach, Hope he gets better, and it sucks this happened. Hopefully the next guy is not noticeable which is a good thing for an O- Lineman. So maybe this is the opening for Pinkston to shine.

it's obvious that Pinkston is the guy with the first shot. so, I think Joe was just saying that he hopes Pinkston steps up (because if he doesn't, then they'll try someone else there)

Perhaps, but it's probably just as simple as Pinkston has been the starter in Steiny's absence the last week or two... so you don't want to take a step backward, and you don't want to disrupt any familiarity that they've achieved.

Not to beat a dead horse or anything but may I remind people of two things I've been claiming for quite awhile now.

1) This team is going to win ~ 2-3 games this year. Bank it.
2) The loss due to retirement of Billy Yates was HUUUGE. Steinbach being done for the year just further exacerbates our OLine issues as we're now down to essentially our "3rd string" LG. We have 2 legitimate studs in Thomas and Mack, 1 re-tread who can't stay healthy in Pashos and 2 unproven and (thus far) quite unspectacular hopes and prayers in Lauvao and Pinkston.
3) As for our backups....WHAT backups? This team doesn't believe in no stinking backups. That's evident in more places than OLine *cough* the ENTIRE defense *cough*.

Which brings me full-circle back to point #1. It's the NFL. Injuries are GOING to happen and happen often. Depth is tested each and every week. We have NONE (regardless of how good or not some of our starters are) = good luck finding many wins. Nothing about our pre-season or training camp has eased my mind on any of this either, unfortunately.
