Miscalculation of how much they're willing to do for themselves or how much they don't want us there?

Ralphie if this "surge" does anything major I'd be the first to give an attaboy. But it won't. We are occupying a country. Historically that doen'st work out very well. You know what MIGHT happen if we pulled out now (god willing in your words)? The shias and the sunnis would be at each other's throats then the Kurds would try to split, then Turkey would get involved, then Saudia Arabia would feel the need to be in involved.(that isn't even mentioning how Isreal takes up a HUGE portion of the Arab worlds time) In other words what MIGHT happen would be that they would start occupying each others time/efforts/money. It could also be a huge bloodbath. But not here, not in America. Heck even the IDEA of terrosists in the US is hard to take if you really think about it. 9/11 was a well planned fluke that happened to work, but wouldn't again. IF we had followed simple rules the rest of the world uses (ie don't EVER open the cockpit door) it never would have occured. Our ports are open so there is a concern, but actual attacks? In America? What you have visions of Arabs, or philipenos running around broadway and 5th with Ak-47s? And for the rest of the world not saying we mis-used the intel I'd have to ask what hole you've been hiding in? (OH yeah the ostrich-conservative-don't-question-anything-foxnews-doesn't-tell-you-ignore-the-rest-of-the -world hole.) The rest of the world IS saying we mis-used and manipulated intel. You see anyone else in Iraq in a major way?

I swore off Iraqi political discussions last week and hoped to stay off the thread...but I am weak and easily goaded.
I've heard heroin junkies use that same line!

After 4 years in Iraq I do not see anything which would suggest that we refuse to change course. We have changed leadership several times after the miscalculation of how much the Iraqis were willing to do for themselves.
So how will that change what the Iraqis are willing to do for themseves? And what have each of these "changes in leadership" done to "change course" or strategy in Iraq? I mean to ask,how have we changed our strategy? I understand that we have changed generals and such, but have they in turn "changed the strategy"? Aren't those two seperate things?

This surge may have a positive effect in crucial areas and actually reduce the murder and mayhem which is part of the radical Islamic culture. It appears to have a good chance of success. And most Americans pray that it does.
I'm quite sure that the vast majority of Americans do! Me included in that group. But if the Iraqis aren't willing to "do for themselves" how will that help to end a high level, long term troop strength there? Since we pretty well know that they aren't stepping up to the plate,as you have already stated, what will happen in the end result when we do leave even after restoring stabiity to Iraq when and if we do achieve those goals initialy?

The real test will come when, God willing, the surge accelerates the progress of Iraqi self policing with out outside activism. That test will be whether the loyal opposition in DC gives credit when due .... I'm a doubtin' it!
I do have what I consider to be a somewhat reasonable set of questions for you Ralphie. If you remember, some months ago, there was a statement released saying "The Iraq military was 75% ready to take over operations in Iraq". Now I highly questioned the validity of that statement and was pretty much lambasted for questioning it. And told that it was very likely an accurate statement.
Now,if that statement was correct? Why is it that months later, months in which you would think that their percentage of readiness would be going up,that we need 26,000 more troops? I mean if Iraq has went from zero percent chance of securing it's own country,to over 75% ready in a four year period, wouldn't you think that OUR troop strength could be going down instead of up? Or do you think the statement of them being 75% ready was overblown?
I mean common sense would dictate that the more ready they are,the less they would need our help. Or am I missing something here?
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.
