We'd have to win our next two, and get some help, because Tampa owns the tiebreaker.

Too bad Tampa won't lose to the Yankees Double-A team.

a 2team tiebreaker only means they get to be home for the 1game playoff. win both games and you are at least guaranteed a trip to Tampa.

I thought they changed that to take head-to-head into account?

they changed it so that if 2 teams from the same division tie atop the division, the H2H record will determine who gets the division and who gets the wild card.

the wild card tie still is a 1game playoff. H2H gives homefield.

Quote:

Scenario #3: If two teams are tied for the Wild Card, the tie shall be broken as follows:

A one-game playoff shall be played the day after the season was scheduled to end to determine the Wild Card. The site of the game would be determined by head-to-head records, then winning percentage within each team's own division, followed by the highest winning percentage in intraleague play during the second half of the season. The winner of the game shall be declared the Wild Card.

Until.........next year when there are two wildcard teams.

I might be the minority but I like the idea of having two wildcard teams and a 1-game playoff series between those two. Winning the division should account for something.

no, I completely agree. I like the 1game idea for the wild card. It does present some logistical issues though like what happens when 2 teams tie for the division/wildcard (w/ a 3rd team tied for the other wild card slot).

if you make those 2 play a 1game playoff, then you are putting both at a disadvantage going forward (as they will both be attempting to avoid the wildcard 1gamer).

i hope that they just use H2H to break those types of ties because, like you said, winning the division should mean something (and H2H is a big part of winning the division to me).

Ya, I heard rumors of MLB using a tiebreaking format similar to the NFL once this 2-team wildcard change happens. No more 1-game tiebreaking games regardless of the scenario.

Two teams from the AL East get into the playoffs every freaking year. And near the end of the season, neither team is really trying to win the division over the other. They are setting up their postseason rotation and then deciding if they want one of the other teams in the first round.

This new format ends that forever. A team will try their hardest to win the division. They don't want a wildcard spot.

Sweet.

I guess hope isn't all lost, then.

Win 3 and we're in.

Not likely, but better than the feeling I had after losing last night.

Meh....it's only tied. Win two and you guaratee yourself a 1-game playoff. Baltimore will be playing like it's Game 7 of the WS....but you'll take the next two, pains me to say.

Tampa will probably split with the Yanks.

Done.

Good luck with Detroit or Texas. I wouldn't want to be anywhere near Detroit, they've been crazy hot the past month.

Detroit was crazy hot. They have simmered down since that long winning streak (6-5 vs. KC, Oakland, Balt, Cle) and it's been TX lately that has been the crazy hot team (12-3 since Sept 9th).

A team that can't pitch, can't play defense, can't even stop a ball from going behind home plate (Wakefield/Saltalamachia) should not be in the postseason.

However if they make it watch them catch on fire and make it to the world series

I refuse to believe this team couldn't win a World Series. I don't know what is going on with us, but this team is still the team that led the division going into this month.

Hopefully if we get in, we remember how to play baseball.

I will take Detroit against anyone in the al. They have the hitting, best pitcher, and best reliever in the game right now. all of the other teams are a little weaker across the board.

The White Sox benched Dunn so he wouldn't get enough at bats to qualify for the worst batting average ever in a season.

And Mets pulled Jose Reyes after he got a hit in first inning because he wants to win the batting title. Ryan Braun can still pass him though if he goes at least 3 for 4.

Reyes leaving the game by his own request to attempt to secure a batting title is horsebleep. I will forever remember him for this selfishness. Just like Rickey Davis tried to manufactor his own triple double....it's bush league. it's crap.

On this day in 1941, the Red Sox manager offered to sit Ted Williams for both games of a doubleheader since he was hitting .3995 (rounded up to .400). Ted refused, played both games, went 6-8 and finished well above .400 the right way.

I can kinda understand the Dunn move, it's a record nobody wants and the manager should probably sit him. Reyes.....punk!

Cryin' Ryan 0-1 so far. I'd rather have Satan be the NL Batting Champion than him.

How fitting the week 'Money Ball' debuts in theaters, the 'Extra 2%' team slays the huge money Red Sox.

163 million dollars.

Miss the playoffs.

Gotta love seeing one of the highest payroll teams choke at the end.

I have a friend who's a huge red sox fan, lifetime fan, he's originally from boston. He told me in a way he's kind of happy because all these people who hopped on after '04 are getting a taste of what it was like before 2004.

Seriously, all those people who show up to Regressive Field with their Sox stuff are not real fans. They're the same jerks who show up to Cleveland Browns Stadium with Steeler gear on.

Wicked crazy night of baseball <in a Boston accent>.

Too bad I fell asleep around 10pm and missed it all. I had ESPN on and I remember waking up around 1am hearing them talk about the craziness....but I was sure if that was a dream until I confirmed around 6am this morning. Funny.

Good for the Rays
Good for the Cards
Good for the Braves
and VERY GOOD for the Saux

Eat it Boston (sorry Top).

I had a game, so I missed it. Not that I care anyways. Anything outside of the Tribe I just don't care about anymore. Baseball has really grown away from me. Although I was glad to hear Red Sox nation got kicked in the balls.

Really? 29,000+ of paid attendance in what was essentially a playoff game? Bad, bad Tampa fans. That place should have been sold out with a few thousand standing room only tickets sold too. Truly embarassing. This is the only aspect that stinks about this whole scenario. Just like the Marlins, nobody in those towns even care if they win or lose.
