Do you think that Brown makes it as the 54th starter? We needed a third last year, and I expect us to go with three this year.

I don't see a move to get a vet journeyman that gets this cut this weekend unless Colt goes down.

I suspect that there will be veteran QBs sitting at home should there be a need for one. They will be better than Brown ...... but I think that the teams wants to develop him ..... and in blow outs they now have a chance to let a kid get some real game experience.

Probably not.

I do like the quote though ..... and I would no matter who said it. I think it's true.

How about Troy Smith? Has more upside than J. Brown and fits the style of QB Holmgren likes.

I'll be glad when turns about 40, so we can quit hearing his name brought up every time the conversation swings to QBs!

Neither Brown nor Smith is any good. Smith was horrible for the 49ers last year, barely completing 50% of his passes.

Holmgren wants a 3rd QB with huge, huge upside that he can work to develop. That means a rocket arm, and a lot of room for improvement. That sure isn't Smith.

The 3rd QB ... and yes, I expect that we'll keep one, will be a raw guy, with tons of potential and in need of a lot of work. That's Brown to a tee.

The roster limit is 53. There is confusion out there about the "3rd QB" and the 53 man roster...he counts on the 53...but not as a gameday active...same as last year in those regards.

I don't think we will have a 3rd QB on the 53 man roster at midnight this Saturday...but we very well may have one after this weekend's cuts.

I have serious doubts that Holmgren will spend a great deal of time grooming a QB.... not in his current role

Sorry. The team. That is Holmgren's stated goal, to have a QB to develop each and every year.

So the 54th guy becomes active from the practice squad on gameday? Does anyone know?

Yeah, that it true.. and when you think about it, it's not a wholly bad idea.. What if you hit on someone that could really grow.. hassleback comes to mind

There is no 54th guy.

The overall roster is set at 53. The game day roster is set at 45 players plus the 3rd QB can be active without restriction, allowing a total of 46 active if the QB is that final guy on game day.

This is why I thought we would try to get Pryor. (Which we might have done and just be outbid by the Raiders).

Except that he likes a low pick/UDFA guy to work with.

Bernie seems to think that the Browns will go with 2 QBs, and stash Brown on the practice squad. He seems to think that no one will pick him up.

I don't know I'd be willing to take that bet.

Wallace didn't have a chance. He was playing with second- and third-string linemen. He had guys in his face 2 seconds after the snap on just about every play. I'm not sure what observations could be gleaned from this game other than that if our line has Pat Murray, Steve Vallos, Branndon Braxton and Phil Trautwein on it at any given time then we're toast.

I think that is the lesson from tonight. That and Wallace is an extremely good sport about getting chewed up that way. It was Trick or Treat night for the Bears defense against that line. Wallace's QB rating is proof of that.

It is also probably enough to justify keeping a third QB in the mix. If we start losing offensive linemen we're going to need spare quarterbacks ASAP.

I think we will keep a young QB on the practice squad... right now that's Brown... perhaps there is someone out there that H&H have their eyes on that gets cut, but I think they will want to keep a young guy with potential... right now that's Brown... we'll see..
