I hate to say this again...but this year is another rebuilding year for the Browns.

Last years roster at the beginning of last season included the following players...

85Sam Aiken..................95Steve Octavien
57Eric Alexander.............28Sabby Piscitelli
50Eric Barton..................Derrick Roberson
22Mike Bell.....................67Derreck Robinson
96David Bowens..............92Shaun Rogers
22Thomas Clayton...........53Matt Roth
90Kenyon Coleman..........84Robert Royal
54Blake Costanzo............28Clifton Smith
24James Davis................98Robaire Smith
17Jake Delhomme...........27Nick Sorensen
26Abram Elam................78John St. Clair
13Yamon Figurs..............83Chansi Stuckey
36Coye Francies.............93Jason Trusnik
33Jerome Harrison..........47Lawrence Vickers
94Travis Ivey...................21Eric Wright
30Eric King....................Billy Yates

With a turnover of 32 roster spots, new coaches, new HC/OC, new DC and new playbooks for the offense and defense and YES, once again, the Browns are beginning a major overhaul.

I hope this is the last major overhaul for the Browns, for a long time. I hope to see improvements in the offense and defense but I do not expect miracles...6 or 7 wins.

Looking at that list, and thinking of some of the new guys, including the rookies, actually just gave me a lot better outlook on this season.

As for the coaches, the upgrade in competence is huge. IMO Ryan was way overrated, and Daboll was a fool. Mangini had the right philosophy, but had no idea how to use or develop talent.

So far in this shortened preseason, this team looks more confident and competent than it did with all those "experience" players Mangini brought here. I think Mangini change the attitude somewhat. He added disipline and accountability. But also undermined his attributes with an overinflated ego, and hurt the development of the team with his stubborness towards players he didn't favor.

The vision is set. The goal is stated. The FO and coaches are of the same cloth. The players are buying in and to a man seem confident in the approach being taken. These things are huge. The talent being brought in is younger and better than it has been in years. The QB position is not at question, and our RB is one of the better in the league. Defensively, the scheme is player friendly and uncomplicated. Overall team speed has increased.

With all the things listed above , I tend to believe that this team could very well be better than most think. The youth involved will be the key. IMO 7-8 wins is very doable. If we stay healthy, and the young guys develop quickly, I can see 9 wins. If the defense jells quickly, since I believe that is where we we struggle, 10 wins is not out of the question.

A few key injuries, and all of this is out the window.

My hope is that with competent coaching and younger players, by the middle of the season this team will actually become better.

I'll say that some parts of this team looked more confident.

But, perhaps the most important position of all, QB, didn't look all that confident at all. McCoy looked more and more uncomfortable as the preseason went on, IMO.

Could be because every time he developed continuity with a receiver, he went down with an injury. MoMass was thee guy in colt camp, he showed up with a broke foot. Now we have had Watson hip, Cribbs hammy, Mitchell finger, Moore concussion, Cameron hammy, Hillis hammy, Jackson turf toe, Norwood ankle.

Plus i would imagine each week we added more and more to his plate. I think Colt will be fine come Sunday. Also there was no threat of run, and the Lions and eagles just dared us to run on them.

J/C...

Since this seems to be the predictions thread, I'll weigh in. I haven't read the entire thread, so I'm sure someone has probably already brought most of this up but, I see this as a 4 maybe 5 win team, despite the fact that I truly want it to be more.

The offense should be better IF (GIANT IF) we can keep the Oline healthy. Losing Steiny and Pashos in the walking boot is not a good start.

The D will be worse. Dick Jauron <<<<< Mangini/Rob Ryan. We probably have more speed/talent this year, but not a lot more. What we don't have is a strategic advantage that knew how to use the talent we do have. Prepare to be underwhelmed by Dick Jauron.

And most importantly, the best unit on this team in recent years will not be as good as previous years. Special Teams will be worse. There are several reasons for this. First the new kickoff rules. Second is the injury to Reggie Hodges. Lastly, our coverage units will miss the Core 4. The only positive we have is that Phil Dawson is still here.

I think we should beat Cincy week 1, though I'm not nearly -6.5 confident. But ultimately, we lack depth and I just don't think this team is nearly as good as the national guys are touting. I see us "disappointing" with a 4-12 record.

This could be a long year... At least the tailgating will be good.

2-14.
we're as bad as the '90 Browns. I'd say we'll give up 500 points on D.

Uncle Bud--erm, Holmgren-will be gone at the end of the year, along with the rest of the team.

Could you forsee Randy moving the team?

Based only on what I saw this preseason, (of course that may not mean anything at all):

Cincy - Loss
Colts - Loss
Dolphins - Win
Titans - Win
Oakland - Win
Seahawks - Loss
49ers - Win
Texans - Loss
Rams - Loss
Jags - Loss
Bengals - Win
Ravens - Loss
Steelers - Loss
Cards - Win
Ravens - Loss
Steelers - Loss

6-10, maybe 7-9 with a win against Seahawks, Rams or Jags. Anything better than 6-10 IMHO is gravy.

So do you think Cincy gets worse as the season goes along or we get better? Or you just think we couldn't get two from them so we've got to split? And why the second game? Have you seen Dalton play?

I will be extremely disappointed if we drop game 1. I actually expect the Browns to cover the 6.5.

This is a bit of a concern for me as well. He was getting a ton of pressure, and the more he got the more frantic he seemed to be. I am counting on the notion that he is going to settle down as he gets more experience. If not, we're screwed.

OK ... let me put on my prognosticator hat ........

Cincinnati: Browns win.
Indy: Manning out, Browns win.
Dolphins: Fans start getting all psyched: Browns win. We're going to the Super Bowl .......
Titans: Loss #1. 250 fans jump off the nearest bridge immediately following the game. Maybe we aren't going to the Super Bowl ......
Oakland: Loss. Damn, fire everyone! We suck! Super Bowl ... Hah!
Seahawks: Win. OK, we are going to the Super Bowl .......
49'ers: Win Yep .. definitely Super Bowl!
Rams: Loss. Dammit. What happened?
Jags: Win. This was a loss, then the Jags lost their minds and cut their best QB.
Bengals: Loss. Bengals get revenge for week 1.
Ravens: Win. Yea! We are definitely going to the Super Bowl!
Steelers: Loss. Uh oh....
Cards: Loss What the .....
Ravens: Loss Oh for the love of .........
Steelers: Win to end the season, and knock the Steelers out of the playoffs.

8-8. Perfectly reasonable expectations.

I see the division/wild cards like this:

AFC
Houston
San Diego
Baltimore
New England

Wild Cards:
Oakland
Miami

NFC
Giants
Green Bay
New Orleans
St Louis

Wild Cards:
Philly
Detroit

That's how I see it .... but I'm on heavy duty pain meds.

Defense:
Gocong, J. Mitchell, Young will prove they are back-ups. We still need three starters on defense.Any injury will expose a lesser player. Our lack of depth on defense will lose us games. We could lose another game at the end of the year by 50 points.

Offense:
Little will prove to be a talent and one other WR not named Cribbs will emerge as a decent option.
Colt, the rest of the backs and TEs will be fine. The acquistions of Cousins and Hicks will prove fortuitous. The offense will be stronger as the season progresses until the last month of the season and then it will fall apart

Twelve games look winnable. Manning, Palmer and Gerrard out of the picture helps.

Wins are against :

Kentucky at home
San Francisco
Seattle
Los Angeles Jags
in Kentucky

5-11

and we still miss the Luck sweepstakes b/c Kentucky, Los Angeles, Buffalo and Washington intentionally tank the season. Carolina will suck royally with the interception machine at the helm.

As always...difficult to predict a season without having seen 1or2 real games...obv we are a rebuilding team with many young players and very iffy depth, otoh we have a as easy a schedule as there will be...a new HC normally means motivation and overachieving...that said: I see anything from 4 to 8 Ws, so I'll settle for 6-10

If we start off good and stay relatively healthy I can see us get on a run with this schedule early on (not many good QBs we face there)...and from there, who knows...confidence, meaningful late season games...a surprise season IS possible

But no team will be healthy every week, which means our depth will be tested and I think it'll be our downfall....most probably we'll be around .500 after those 8-10 games but end up short at the end

Worst case is a bad start and loss of an irreplacable player (imagine 1 of Thomas, Rubin, Hillis, Haden, Ward going down) early in the season but even then I see us winning 3-4 games at least

McCoy's development is the big joker this season...if he REALLY improves, we can go far....I fully expect another teaser season from him though (impressive managing Ws against sub par teams, looking completely lost against real teams), where 100% of homers want "to see more/to give him more time" and me lobbying for a new starting QB in the offseason...I trust the FO though and I think even for them it's a do or die season for Colt...they know what they have...and don't have in him

That's the fun part of the NFL...you never quite know what you have before the real bullets fly...even the FOs and Coaches don't know

I fully expect a 1st game W though at home against a rookie QB-WR combo

Interesting, you have the Dolphins finishing ahead of the Jets and the Raiders finishing ahead of the Chiefs... and the Raiders and the Dolphins finishing ahead of the Steelers... some bold predictions there.

There are always teams that make a move upwards, and other teams that come crashing down each year.

Oakland has a ton of talented players ...... they just have a headcase owner. Miami needs a QB to have a pretty decent team ...... and I think they'll grab Garrard. I am guessing (hoping?) that the Steelers will start showing their age. The Chefs lost Weis, and I think that will hurt a great deal.

Plus ..... bold predictions that are blown are rarely remembered ...... bold predictions that come true are rarely forgotten.

Overall? Yeah, I was unimpressed, sorry...he had 1 impressive comeback drive against NYJ (and many forget that it was also his ineptness that led to us being down..we didnt score for 2 Qtrs in that game, McCoy was the QB of those Qtrs too) and that's it...the rest was unimpressive or off of others (mostly Hillis) backs (he did nothing against NO btw)

I still don't know where this 1st Pittsburgh game hype came from...he didn't lead the team to any points until deep in the 4th, down 3 scores...not looking like a UDFA rookie QB in his 1st game doesn't make it a "good" start....how about those 2nd PIT and BAL games? I sure haven't forgotten about those..and those came AFTER all those oh so good starts when DCs had some tape on him (remember what tape did to DA?)...

That was last season,, we have a new HC/OC, new system being put into place (and you know there is going to be hiccups at first).

So the only thing you can look at is this preseason.

This from an article about what to watch for on the Browns main site:

Quote:

Quarterback Colt McCoy. During the first three games of the preseason, McCoy completed 28 of 46 (60.9 percent) of his attempts for 320 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. Although he was sacked three times for 23 lost yards, McCoy carried a 101.7 quarterback rating.

I think the kid will be fine and only get better. I also believe that over analizing last season will get you no good info as it relates to going forward.. We've all read how unprepared McCoy was going into the games he played last year (because the staff didn't prepare him)

So what does last seasons results show us? Nothing... other than the kid has guts and can be a leader. That's not really a bad thing at all.

I don't think that Colt had an easy game in any of his starts and in the NY game he showed determination in the face of adversity (un rookie like poise) and he put us in a position to come back in the 4th quarter of that game.

His first game against Pittsburgh and first ever start, started off pretty bad for him. (and now we know why, because he was basically thrown to the wolves)
after the game, even some of the Pittsburgh players had high praise for the youngster.

We know about his David vs. Goliath wins, but I have a hard time finding one of his starts taken in proper prospective, that was a "W" < in your word.

Colt still has much to prove, but I believe in giving credit where credit is due.

You throw too much of the blame on Colt. I distinctly remember the Browns defense being out on the field for the entire 2nd quarter straight (maybe not the entire quarter, but within a minute or two, so close enough). The Jets milked that clock like crazy.

There's also the more pressing reason that Colt was a rookie starter pressed into service, with our roster last year, against a very nasty Jets defense. That defensive line was giving our O-line fits (you know, the one perceived strength we had?), and don't even start any of us on their secondary vs. our receiving corps.

But go ahead Django, hang it all on Colt. That makes tons of sense...

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

Yea we had a 3 and out between like 11 min drive and a 9 min drive. Going off memory but you are right we never had the freaking ball for an eternity. Then it was halftime they got the ball and went on like another 7 min drive lol.

Right, he doesn't deserve any credit for the other 3 scoring drives of 60+ yards, that had nothing to do with him.

Quote:

we had 4 first half possessions, we scored on 3 of them and the 4th one we gave them the ball on our own 30 because Hillis fumbled. Not Colt. Hillis had 19 rushes for 82 yards, while a decent game, it hardly sounds like Colt rode him down the field to 20 points...

Most Colt haters would probably also forget that in OT, he had led us to what would have been a first down at the Jets 32 (which is inside Dawsons range to win the game even if we didn't gain another yard), when Stuckey fumbled and lost the ball...

I'm still looking for his "ineptness".... We had 3 consecutive drives in the 3rd and 4th where we failed to really move the ball, I see one time where he completed a 4 yard pass on 3rd and 5 which isn't good...

Overall, for a rookie in one of his first few starts, he played great.... but you just keep seeing it your way.

Amazing isn't it?

Just because I'm not sold on our QB, who's last 3 real games, against our Division looked like the guy I've described....game managing 19for25, 243yds, 2 TDs-0INT against a bad CIN team (still lost 17-19) and then 35for70, 358yds, 1TD-6INT in the last 2 against those we would like him to beat

He might have improved from that...but I doubt it's enough to beat them

We will see...I hope he is able to duplicate the stat line of his last CIN game...that should be enough to beat out Ginger, even the 17p

So you're not happy with his performance against Cincy, just because of the 17 points?

Give me 76% completion, 2 TD's, 0 INT's, and 9.7 yards per attempt every game and I'll be really happy.

Cincy's top two backs ran the ball 39 times for 190 yards... TOP was 38 to 22 in Cincy's favor...

Did Colt not do enough, or did the defense fail to get Cincy off the field so he could do more?

Just to add proof to my "McCoy isn't a QB that wins on his own" thesis....in those 2 horrible games to end the season...guess what Hillis stat line was? combined 18runs for 48yds...Hillis was shut down (or injured, whatever) = McCoy couldn't step up and sustain drives on his own....he needs the run to open up passing lanes...I want my QB to be the one to open up running lanes though...that's what a franchise QB is all about after all, isn't it?

What was troubling me more in those games was that PIT and BAL begged us to beat them deep more than any other team did before...which means TAPE got evaluated and McCoy's strenghts got figured out...he's smart and knows WHERE to go with the ball most of the time but he just couldn't get them there...those floaters are still concerning me big time...and this preseason didn't convince me otherwise, I just didn't see sufficiently improved arm strength...his "deep balls" are mostly timing lobs, they simply are in the air way too long and just not zipped....the deflected sideline pass to Moore vs Eagles in preseason is the best example: it was a lob (underthrown too), if this pass is thrown with any zip, the DB would not have any chance to touch the ball..Moore had the guy beaten by 2 steps, that's as good as it gets in the NFL

as I'm writing this somehow Danny Wuerffel popped into my mind

Looking at the schedule and lack of any Top10 or even 15 QB we will face in the 1st 10 weeks, McCoy has the chance to look like the real McCoy just slipstreaming Hillis and limiting mistakes...it should be enough to stay ingames and, against those teams, maybe be even enough to win more than lose...but I already know that McCoy is capable of that...I will look closer in situations where HE has to win a game, be it a late drive down by 1 score or those last weeks where he's up against BAL and PIT twice, maybe (hopefully) even in meaningful games...those games and weeks I will be looking forward to because they are the real test between being just another garbage time QB ala Orton/managing QB like Pennington or a real franchise QB....we will see

Last two drives against the Jets last year, in Regulation and Overtime...

The Jets started the 2nd half with a 16 play drive if I recall...

Kind of hard to get in sync when you're defense can't get off the field...

Colt WON that game (and then it was fumbled away. Yes that's assuming a made FG, but whatever)

You admit that he's capable of winning more than he loses... yet don't like him... um ok then...

You do realize McCoy was a rookie last year, right? No rookie QB can win on his own. None. Ever.

So you're saying it's hard to perform when your offensive is one dimensional?

Take out Colt McCoy's rushing yards, and in the two games you're talking about ... We had...

96 rushing yards.

In TWO games.

48 yards per game.

Can't imagine why ANY QB would struggle.

Talking of "assumed made FGs"...Nick Folk, the Jets K, missed 3 FGs that game....so much for "Colt WON that game"....more like "thank god Nick Folk kept us in it"

I'm not "admitting" anything...I'm not on any other side here: I'm a Browns fan and believe it or not, I LIKE Colt...what's not to like? He's no primadonna, he works hard and maximizes his talents as good as he can....he's exactly the kind of guy I WANT to succeed...just to make that perfectly clear

I just doubt he can overachieve enough to be anything more than a Pennington/Orton...I think that's his ceiling (as he's not even there yet)...and I'm not ok to waste 2 or more years on a QB with that kind of ceiling (as starter, would love to have him as backup)...why? because we won't go anywhere with a QB like that...we'd be (more) competitive, sure but that's not the goal of this game...I want a real franchise QB wo win with, not a "not to lose" QB as that's what I see in Colt right now

j/c..

I'm getting a little tired of the franchise QB talk.. I mean out of 32 teams.. how many have a sure fire franchise QB? Only a few QB's (around 5-7) have the uncanny ability to move and offense that has little talent/ experience.

The biggest thing w/ Colt IMO is can he make the pass when the receiver gets open, can he throw a few passes from time to time in very short windows, and also read a defense while throwing in a few tricks to get the defense to make mental mistakes.

Very few rookie QBs step in and "win games on their own" ... especially against some of the top defenses in the NFL ..... with backup's backups playing on the OL.

I have some concerns about McCoy from late last year, but the difference between a guy who makes it in the NFL and one who fails is now he adjusts when defenses start taking away what he does well. This is what we need to see this year. If we ran any other offense than the WCO, I would be concerned. However, given that the majority of passes McCoy will be asked to throw in this offense will be short to medium passes, with an emphasis on timing rather than pure muscle, I think he stands a good chance of being, at the very least, competent.

Oh for cryin out loud,, over the years, there have been Very very few such QB's.. in fact, I can't name one that was truly able to take over a game and win it by himself. Maybe Elway,, maybe Favre Possibly Brady or Montana.. But not one of them really took over a game and won it.

You sound like a guy that just don't like McCoy which is fine, but quit making stuff up to support your feelings. come to me with PROOF or just say that you feel he's not capable.. but don't take ONLY those facts that support your thinking and forget the rest..

There are at least 10 QBs in the NFL currently that fall into this category imho...

Brady
Rodgers
P.Manning
Roethli
Brees
Schaub
Vick
Romo
Rivers

2 younger ones looking good: Ryan, Freeman

For me, those are FRANCHISE QBs...btw, 9 of those 11 led their teams into the POs last season...most of them are regularly in the POs...guess why

If you're content to have a middle of the road Orton, Henne, Cassel, Campbell...cool, I'm not

Btw, you're all right that it's much to ask out of a rookie QB....my assessment is towards the future after what I've seen of McCoy in College and last season...I just don't see him winning games late like all of those QBs above can

You lost what little credibility your posts have when you listed Tony Romo...
