Personally, I'd call up Hank in a hot New York minute to be our swing backup interior lineman. Basically he'd be our Billy Yates.
However I don't think we will. Youth movement and all that. Especially with already signing Hicks, my gut tells me H&H won't go down this road.
Our depth chart could look like this:
LT: Thomas, Cousins/Pinkston LG: Hicks, Fraley C: Mack, Fraley RG: Lauvao, Greco RT: Pashos, Cousins/Pinkston

I wouldn't have a problem with Fraley.
But, I think we need to remember that GM has always liked Fraley and has a personal relationship with his family. That's all well and good, but that might bias the old guy (and GM is very old).
Also, let's not fall into the "just because he's familiar means he's good" trap. Is Fraley better than what we've got? Possibly. But I wouldn't want to bring him on just because he was here before. I want to bring on a guy who can contribute.
Like I said, that might be Fraley. I know I wouldn't have any complaints bringing him back at all. But let's also remember the situation surrounding some people wanting to bring him back.

To build slightly on your post... Is Fraley better than Hicks (at guard)? I don't think we know very much about Hicks, but from what I've read about the little blurbs in the articles when we brought him over, he kind of sounds like Fraley round 2. Serviceable starter and won't be a weak link. Edit: After thinking about it a little longer, I'd be good with just going and grabbing Fraley and dumping Vallos. If we did that, I'd look for Hicks to be a potential RT backup (we really need to address this as Pashos seems to be showing some wear this season).

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

Yeah, I agree. I don't have a problem if we got Fraley, assuming he's as good as he was a few years ago and/or he's better than what else is out there.

Fraley was in St Louis last year with our new head coach.
He was also in Philly when Heckert traded him to us.
Our coach and GM should know him about as well as anyone ..... so whether or not they try to bring him in will definitely tell how they feel about him.

I would prefer this if Pinkston can do the job..

I say that only because I think that for the overall longterm productivity if the team, it would be very good for Pinkston to work out at LG very well. If he can make us forget about Stieny,, that would be a HUGE plus.

J/C, If we bring back Fraley we will have to hear countless post on how we should have never Drafted Mack again. I personally thought he was about washed up when he left here. I'm not sure how much he has left in the tank, no pun intended.

he's probably running close to empty, but we don't need him to be an every down guy. We need him to fill in as needed.. for that you need physical skills to be sure, but you also need someone pretty smart and has some experience to come in cold and do a good job.
Hank can do that I think..

late to the game here, but why is it we're keeping 4 TEs? I don't really expect much from players 50-53, but wouldn't another 'backer be better?

Because we have 4 good ones and one, Jordan Cameron is a rookie who will need time to develop. I agree though on the LBer position, because Titus Brown is not going to be ready to contribute for the first few weeks, so I thought we might keep 7, but then we signed a 3rd QB, T. Lewis who I think forced us to change our hand so to speak. It sounds Like Gocong will be suited up for the game and I think he can play in the middle if needed, but we still only have 5 LBers for the game.
I haven't seen us play the big nickle (with 3 Safeties) this year that I can recall, but perhaps that could be another option we may incorporate into our game plan to stop their TE.

NAAA Mack is the starter, but iMO Hank is better than Vallos and he would be more of a help to the young guys on the O-line. This would not be a long term fix only a one or at max 2 year fix as far as a experienced vet who could step in and preform well if needed due to injuries.

Haven't looked over the whole thread ... but has anyone brought up the fact that Heckert has been the GM to ship out Fraley not once but twice? From the Eagles the first time around and then last season as well.
While anything could happen at any time ... I just don't think Heckert is in love with Hank, and I don't see it as anything more than a 1% possibility.

That has been mentioned before and discussed quite a bit. Maybe the last time had more to do with Mangini? Just wondering out loud...
Mangini loves drafting himself a center, and he likes the big strong ones as well. Hank wasn't really a power guy, if I remember correctly.

True and neither have anything to do with recent roster moves either
I'll never understand why if a poster has something to say about a player (one way or the other), they just don't open up a new thread on the subject.
Seems the most 'logical' thing to do

I love Hank, but he is older and I'm sure not the same player he was a few years ago when he was old.
When Browns fans like a player they never give up. Just like Tucker when he was being beat like a rented mule at RT and everyone wanted him back because he played a couple good games at RG. He had tons of issues. Hank was a first class guy, and a player that always went 100%, but he is done.

Do I love Hank sure, but my posts have nothing to do with feelings (I save that for tailgate or general discussion) I trul;ey believe he is better then the backup we have now and that he can contribute more to the team than Vallos can, otherwise I would say so, and everybody and their brother knows I have no problem speaking my mind no matter who agrees or disagrees with it.

Tend to agree with GM here...not sure if Hank has anything left (that would be the major question) but I'm not impressed at all by Vallos, he looked like crap in preseason play...never been a fan of him though...worse: he is a C only as far as I know...def upgradeable...not sure about Hank, but would have no problem with another C/G backup being signed in his place

Nah. We've got some relatively young guys on the team who may or may not be turned into serviceable players. It's time to see what they got. What's the worst that could happen? Oh, well, other than the obvious.
If Heckert was really that concerned, he'd be doing something about it. The key to surviving in a riot or disaster is to remain calm and stick to your plan. It's starting to look like our plan is to take a bunch of young guys and make them into a football team.

Shaun O'Hara anyone?
Man I remember when O'hara was here,, I heard more rubbish about how bad he was and how he'd never amount to anything and he was terrible.
He turned out to be pretty good.. Has a ring to show for it.
For me it's the same thing as with Hank. If there is anything left in the tank,, I'd not mind it,,, if it's empty... fergetaboutit

I hated to see O'Hara go. I thought that he was so brutally savaged and undervalued by fans that it was ridiculous. He got the last laugh on all of us.

YT..It was not the "fans" that sent O'Hara packing...it was the idiot coach, Butch Davis.
Butch then drafted Jeff Faine with our first round pick (#21). Faine is still a starting center with Bucs but he was traded by Savage in 2006. Faine went on to become a pro bowl center for the Saints in 2007.
O'Hara went on to become a 3 pro bowler...after Faine, the Browns tried Le Charles Bentley, Hank Fraley and now Mack at center.
Over the years, the Browns have made some very costly blunders, trying to fill the Center position when hypothetically, Shawn O'Hara could have done the job for years.

Yes, I understand that.
However, so many people seemed to actually hate O'Hara that it was ridiculous. He was solid at both Guard and Center, and he was berated for it ..... then cut.
Fans, obviously, don't make any personnel decisions.

He sucked at guard but he was terrific at center. So we move him to guard and start drafting centers in the first round

Browns make practice squad moves Posted 5 hours ago The Browns added two players to the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday morning. The Cleveland Browns signed fullback Will Ta’ufo’ou and running back Xavier Omon to the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday morning. Ta’ufo’ou and Omon replace fullback Eddie Williams, who was signed to Seattle’s 53-man roster, and running back Quinn Porter, who was signed to St. Louis’ 53-man roster. Originally signed by Chicago as an undrafted free agent on April 29, 2009, Ta’ufo’ou spent the entire 2009 and 2010 seasons on the Bears’ practice squad. He was with Chicago through camp this season and waived on September 6. A four-year letterman at the University of California (2005-08), he saw action in 49 contests, making 13 starts. During his collegiate career, he recorded 16 rushes for 80 yards and caught 13 passes for 93 yards and one touchdown. Born on June 19, 1986, the 5-11, 253-pound Ta’ufo’ou is a native of Redwood City, California and attended St. Francis High School in San Carlos, California. Originally drafted by Buffalo in the sixth round (No. 179 overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft, Omon appeared in seven games with the Bills during the 2008 and 2009 seasons, recording 27 rushing yards on 11 attempts and one kickoff return for 26 yards. Waived by the Bills on November 11, 2009, he has spent time on the practice squads of Seattle (2009-10), New York Jets (2010) and San Francisco (2010-11). He was released off the 49ers’ practice squad on Monday. A four-year letterman at Northwest Missouri State University (2004-07), Omon rushed for 7,073 yards on 1,271 attempts with 92 touchdowns to become only the second player in college football history to rush for 1,500 yards in each of his four seasons. He also became the second player in NCAA Division II history and third in college football history to amass 7,000 rushing yards, while his 7,777 all-purpose yards ranked ninth in NCAA history. He also added 90 receptions for 682 yards with six touchdowns during his collegiate career. Born on February 15, 1985, the 5-11, 227-pound Omon is a native of Lawrence, Kansas and attended Beatrice High School in Beatrice, Nebraska. web page

kinda hoped we could keep Porter. The Rams had to get back at us for taking Lewis.
Interesting pickups, 2 practice squad veterans. These guys are going on their 3rd and 4th year respectively on various teams' PS.

That was my thought as well.
Steven Jackson hurting his leg didn't help them one bit, so they almost had to pick up someone.
If Bradford's injured finger had been worse, the loss of Lewis could have been extremely costly. I think that the Rams are extremely unhappy to have lost him, especially given the injury in game 1.

It is interesting to me how many guy we have had picked away from our PS.
Is it because the league knows that TH has an eye for talent?
I do not remember there ever being so much PS activity.

I was thinking the same thing. We have had two FB's plucked off our PS and we are only in the 2nd week of the season!
I think Smith would be gone by now if he was on the PS. Good thing we kept him on the roster.

Regardless if Holmgren is a good President, or if Shurmur is a good Head Coach, I think we're pretty set at GM for the long haul...
