The Colts team without Manning is still better than us. Of course, having Manning out makes them not as good as they would be with him and that increases ours chances of winning.....but I'd be shocked to see if Vegas favored us in the game.

Agree 100%. Let's remember, Kerry Collins was freakin' lights out for the Titans a few years ago. He came back down to Earth last year, but he's certainly able to put up a good game.
Are they better with Manning? Absolutely. But this isn't like the past few years when their backup was a guy like Sorgi.

I agree w/ you guys. I'm nervous about Cinci at home. Nothing will make me super cocky and confident about going to Indi w/ or w/out Peyton. But here's hoping that a different Peyton owns the field that day . . .

Agreed. I think most teams in the league are better than us on paper.
The Colts with Manning is penciled in as an L. Without him ... there's certainly a chance.

I kinda looked at the Colts as though they were practically a guaranteed loss for us. Now they're not. As you said, we have a chance.

Depends on your definition of lights out. If you want your QB to take care of the ball, not make any big plays, and turn around and hand the ball off the Chris Johnson and LenDale White (who was still good at this point), then yes, Kerry Collins was lights out with his 58% completion rate, 12 TD's, and 7 INT's. And that was on a team that he had been with for three years.
He has been with the Colts for two, going on three, weeks. If we don't beat the Manning-less Colts it will be a disappointment.

Okay let's say hypothetically he can play average (I think he's done).
How do you expect him to run the most complex offense in the NFL, maybe in NFL history? Oh here's the real kicker, he's had 2 weeks.

I agree with you.
Peyton Manning makes receivers better by almost always throwing a very, very catchable ball. You will almost never see him hang a receiver out to dry. He is incredible accurate. He puts the ball right in their hands and lets them make plays.
He also knows that offense so well that he gets the team out of bad plays. You don't usually see the Colts, for example, running into the strong side of the defense. You don't see them getting burned on many blitzes. Manning gets them into the right play, and gets rid of the ball so fast that it makes his OL look like All Pros, even if they really are rather ordinary.
That offense will be a completely different offense without Manning. He truly is one of those guys who elevates the play of everyone around him.

First, I wish Manning the best. I'm familiar with neck and spine injuries and they're always scary, especially if he's had to have a second surgery. I think now the objective for him is to get back to normal and not worry about football.
If Dungy were still coaching the team I think he could hold them together enough to be respectable. But I'm not sure Caldwell has shown anything to convince me that it wasn't Manning running the team.
And consider that the players probably doesn't respect or have high hopes for Collins. If the team gets off to a rough start I think they could be a surprise entry into the Andrew Luck sweepstakes.

Doesn't really matter if the neck injury keeps him from playing again. There has been so much mystery surrounding this that it makes you wonder...
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

Honest questions:
How much of that was guaranteed? I know that Brady got $48.5 million guaranteed and Manning's deal was apparently "equal". What if Manning isn't comfortable returning to football and retires? Does the team take the same hit that they would if they cut him?
I'm just playing devil's advocate since nerve injuries are some scary stuff. If the rumors are true about a second surgery it wouldn't surprise me to see Manning hang it up before chancing another neck injury.
EDIT: Didn't see that the second surgery is now official.

j/c Wow, first day of NFL regular season play and this bombshell drops. Has there been a crazier preseason as this one? So much drama and so many storylines . . .  Back to Peyton. Candyman is so right w/ that LeBron analogy. He IS the Colts. Or WAS . . . They have been made out to be an elite franchise and it is all because they stunk it up bad enough to get him w/ the first pick that year. W/ what they have put around him lately, they might look FAR from elite here shortly . . .

It could be the next Favre/Rodgers or Montana/Young ... the only question is ... if you are Indy and actually have the chance to pull the trigger on Luck (maybe they have a shot even if a few teams like Carolina/Minnesota are picking ahead of them with new 1st round QBs or a team with a decent QB who wants a top OLineman?) ... Let's say they do take Luck... could they trade Manning even after a season for a first round pick? Maybe San Francisco takes him to run the offense for another 3 to 5 years under Harbaugh and tutor Kaepernick in a weak NFC West?
Whatever the case ... it's a much better option to have manning AND Luck than having only an aging Manning and no real backup (Sorgi? Collins? Painter? ... not exactly reliable backups)

Agreed, Brownoholic. Without Manning the door is open a crack maybe. But we are not good enough (yet) to take any game for granted. Last year is still a nasty reminder to me with about 5 games might have been won and probably the majority should have been W's in our record. Dumb stuff, tame calls, we got knocked off instead of dishing it out.

If I were the decision maker in the Bengals then I don't really know ...
Whatever the price that they give up has to be more than the headache I will get from younger players either demanding extensions or threatening holdouts/retirement in the future. What that number is (or players / picks is) I'm not sure ....
Good point though, that could be ideal for Carson ... and off of the top of my head I would have to say it would be low. Carson's value might not be sky high ... but I would say more than that of McNabb to the Redskins for a 2nd. Then again ... Indy would only be taking him (presumably) for about a 10 week stint ... a year at the most. I would think a conditional 5th or 4th that could rise to a 4th or a 3rd best case? It would be more of an "all in" move for the Colts because they wouldn't keep Palmer for more than a year... couldn't afford to.

Here's an Idea... If your going to get surgery, ON YOUR NECK, that takes a certain amount of TIME TO HEAL...
Give yourself more time than you'd need to get ready...
If it takes me 15 minutes to get to class, I don't leave my room 15 minutes before class starts...

he probably was told in Jan/Feb that the surgery likely wasn't needed and if it was that the 4 month rehab window was enough time.
then, he needed it. and, the rehab obviously didn't work as he needed a 2nd surgery.
stuff happens. especially when dealing with nerves. let's just hope he recovers and can see the field again.

Look at the colts recent drafts and busts. Pollian has been riding the Manning train his entire career with some other occasionally good picks.

It's football season for sure. All I think about when hearing about Manning's problems is "what does this mean for my Browns?". Week 2 just got much more interesting, maybe.
After he comes back to the game it'll take him a while before he gets really used to the fact his head won't fall off if he gets hit. I don't think he'll ever be the QB he was. Too bad for Indy.

A few years ago the Colts could have been pretty good even without Manning but I think those days are over.
