Jamal Lewis-RB-Ravens Mar. 6 - 11:49 pm et Jamal Lewis will visit the Browns Wednesday. Browns GM Phil Savage was in Baltimore with Jamal Lewis and knows him well. The Browns are believed to be looking for competition for Reuben Droughns, but haven't had a running back in for a visit until now. Any truth that we owe Droughns a huge bonus if he is on the roster in the next few weeks?
I wouldn't be against having him here for the right price.
I think the change in scenery will do him very good! I think his jailtime and all that drama has taken a lot out of him the last few years.

Say we do sign him does that mean we pick Thomas at # 3? I think it might. I still dont want him even if it does mean we get Thomas. On the bright side he cant run for 295 yards against us can he?

Lewis has gone downhill in a hurry. Since his huge season a few years back, he steadily has dropped off. Not interested. At all.

Interesting, I am suprised somewhat the Browns are scheduling a visit. IMO I will be surprised if we sign him, given his off-field history.

I'd rather have him over Droughns, but his every down days are over.
If we go the Peterson route, it'd work.

rather have droughns myself. I don't know why everyone is so down on him. When he runs, he runs hard. It's all about the o line.

Here's the question:
Are we bringing in a guy to split carries WITH Droughns, or are we getting a guy to REPLACE Droughns with the idea of taking Peterson?
Frankly speaking, we're a much better team with a guy like Lewis splitting time with Droughns combined with someone else with our pick than we are taking Peterson combined with other free agents.

I had a feeling we would atleast take a look at him when the Ravens released him. I wonder how much we are going to sign him for (selling him on the Browns won't be a hard thing for Phil). Not saying I want him on the team but a big back like him is a good thing to have. Damn free agency era, you can't hate a player forever anymore since they could sign with you someday.

Droughns isnt owed a huge bonus, around 1.75 mil.
I look at this as what Romeo and Phil have been saying since the day they arrived...if they have the chance to upgrade a position they'll do it. I'm taking this move as being a potential upgrade over Rueben Droughns.
As with everything in FA, it all depends on the price...I know Baltimore low-balled Lewis. I'm guessing we can (don't know if we will) make a better offer.
Whether or not this move would impact drafting Peterson? I'm not sure, but I doubt it.
Personally...Give me Joe Thomas, Antonio Pittman, Jamal Lewis and a decent RG and I think we might be able to muster a decent running game...

it would depend on how much he wants. I don't see him as a major upgrade over rueben. maybe a slight one at best. him and adrian would be a nice combo, but I prefer the left tackle.
you're right about pittman. for some reason he's flew under the radar. he did a great job at ohio state.

LOL....You hit that nail on the head....LOL...
Guy, savage and Jamal are somewhat friends, Savage might be bringing him in as a curtisey to Jamal or his agent, Agents are strange, Savage needs to keep all agents friendly and liking Cleveland, Agents can point a player in many diffrent directions and it's importnat they keep pointing them to Cleveland.

Jamal Lewis's production did not fall off last year. He was better in 2006 by a significant margin over 2005 across the board, except for receiving yards. His average has not been very good, but the man can still run and still find the endzone, which is something Reuben can't seem to do in Cleveland.

As long as we took care of the line as well, it could be something special. Without the line getting what it is due, it won't matter a damn bit.

Yeah,, that's true PPE,, it's pretty funny, but if you look at the Raven line last year,, it wasn't the best line in the league,, not as bad as ours, but not good either,,
What we seem to be building,,HOPEFULLY (here's where we need a fingers crossed emoticon) is a better line..
Stienbach, shaffer, tuck, fraley are all locked up for a while,, Bentley may be back in a year or so and we still have the draft that we can use to pick up a couple of guards or a tackle,,, (I'm still hoping for Thomas in the first)
With the possibility that that line brings, we could be pretty good for a while,, I say COULD BE,,, nothing is for sure.
So perhaps Lewis is a stopgap until next season when it might be in Phils plans to try and find a RB.. Who the heck knows,,, there are so many smokescreens going on out there,,,I'm so confused.

I see this more as Phil raiding his former team and getting a good player..Not a real raid as they released him..but it's from a division rival. We really won't know about RD till the 15th..I believe thats when his bonus is due?

I've got an answer for that
1) Adrian Peterson 2) Quentin Moses 3) Ryan McBean 4) Jay Alford 5-7) ALL sleeper o-line!! let them gel together.. let them grow together.. let them play hard together!

Well, here would be the scenarios...
Droughns & Lewis - both bruisers who aren't really what they once were but could still probably get the job done behind a decent OL. Splitting carries would also take the load off and reduce wear and tear. Both have off-field issues in their pasts.
Droughns & Peterson - Power and Speed. Both willing to run people over but while Droughns can pick up the short yardage (hopefully), AP has the ability to take it to the house every time he touches the ball. Both have injury issues in their not-so-distant pasts. (Droughns - shoulder, AP - collarbone)
Lewis & Peterson - See Droughns & Peterson. Lewis and Droughns are very similar runners but Lewis has had much more success. See OL. However, off-the field issues were greater in Baltimore and character is a big issue with RAC.
Hmmmm. It really boils to what Savage wants to do with the draft. Does he want it to be a secret and try to catch a trade? Obviously, if we take Lewis and pay Droughns, it will show that we're not taking AP and will most likely target Thomas, which is fine, but then we show our hand and it cuts a lot out of the picture unless a team is willing to trade up for Thomas. I think we're better off only keeping one on the roster until the draft if Savage is looking to get more picks or obviously if he is looking to take AP. Droughns is due his money really soon so the picture should become a whole lot clearer then. JMHO.

Yeah, it's a bit of a quandry. I'm ok with the notion of bringing in Lewis, I think he still has a year or two left in him.
And I'm Ok with the idea of drafting Peterson, which would make for a really nice 1-2 punch at RB.... but I absolutely HATE the idea of not drafting Thomas if he is there.
This is going away from the topic at hand, but there are two main positions that you can pretty much get only at the top of the draft... QB and LT. Everything else can be aquired in other ways and just that is done on a regular basis. I just feel we have to come away with one of those. And between the two, it's much harder to get that top performing LT outside of the draft than it is a QB. Look no further than Baltimore last year getting McNair or whoever it is that gets Trent Green this year. You can get the guys who will play at a high level and bridge you to the time when you can select a new one. At LT though, noone lets the really good ones walk. By the time they do walk, there isn't much left in them or there just wasn't ever much there to begin with. Any and every other position can be filled any way you can imagine. So, to me... if you are in position to grab a franchise LT and a franchise QB... you grab one of the two but unless that QB is worlds better or you already have that LT... you take the LT over the QB.

I am not a fan of Lewis and I am not a fan of Droughns but if i am a defensive player, damn I would not want to face those 2 backs 30 times a game. Maybe take that third and trade back into the 2nd just to add Michael Bush to the equation. Let him sit for a year get healthy and learn behind Lewis and Droughns.
I see a few people with every move we make believe its a set up to take this guy or that guy in the draft but I have to disagree. Honestly I think we are setting up a situation where we can trade down and not take one of those tier 1 prospects instead maybe pickup some extra picks especially a first next year which should be a mega draft and also possibly land a corner like Revis or one of the tier 1 players that happens to fall.

I keep seeing the character issue pop up.
Didn't Jamal Lewis' issue take place before he entered the NFL. It just took years to investigate and get to court. Which means it was what 5-6 years ago? Maybe he learned, I don't recall him being in any trouble since then.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

i think the people that say this are still bitter from the time that Lewis said he would get over 300 rushing yards against the Browns.. and then he did it.. lol.. so thats why u get this thug mentality image of him... Lewis is not even close to a "thug".... and yes his mistake happened before he entered the league...
People need to get over themselves, and understand that his signing would definitely help the running game. Especially if the FO has the intentions of drafting Adrian Peterson as well...

Exactly.
That's exactly what I was thinking. Just like he did with Chester Taylor a couple of years ago. I'm not really interested in bringing him here, but I think Savage did this as a professional courtesy and as a method of driving the price up for Lewis. Savage is just trying to ruffle Ozzie's feathers.
And the next head coach is ......

Its rather simple...Jamel Lewis is a major upgrade on RD.
It would be different if RD is an up n comer that we drafted - but he was brought in as a Band-aid till we do draft our stud (in 08 btw...lol ).
It would be different if RD is a solid Vet and never misses a game and is accountable - but he has been oft injured and he lays the rock on the ground as much as anyone and always at an ill opportune time I might add...and we haven't had many opportune times!
Its an upgrade - a bandaid upgrade. Heck a 3 year 15 mil deal would seem more than reasonable in this insane FA market. I can see it happening and he is WAY BETTER than RD...hope it happens.
As for the character stuff. It was when? 2000? or 2002? yes the court stuff happened a year or 2 ago but his error in judgment was a while ago and he's been pretty clean if I recollect.
JMHO
