CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Browns have signed defensive tackle Ahtyba Rubin to a three-year deal, a league source said.

Adam Caplan of Sirius/XM radio first reported that an agreement had been reached.

Rubin, who led all defensive linemen and was third on the team with 82 tackles last season, was in the final year of a deal that paid him $600,000 last year.

Rubin is the third high-profile player the Browns have extended this season. They've also wrapped up left tackle Joe Thomas and tight end Evan Moore. The Browns are also working "like crazy'' to tie up running back Peyton Hillis, according to Browns President Mike Holmgren.

Rubin said on Friday he appreciated the Browns trying to extend him because he loves the city and the fans and wants to be a Brown for the long-term.

Fantastic, wonderful news.

I really like Rubin. He is one of my favorite players.

Good for him. He played pretty darn well today, and this solidifies the interior of our DL for a few more years.

Jackson ran 330 times last year. How many more times should they have handed off to him?

Shurmur still tried to pass his way through the season. Bradford threw more passes (590) than any QB except Peyton Manning, and he completely ignored SJax in their last game of the season, the must-win that would've put them in the playoffs.

Hmm good question, Who was calling offensive plays, The Offensive Cordinator, or the Head Coach... Who used to be a Defensive Cordinator...

His last 5 games were 28, 16, 19, 24, and 11.

You can probably guess which 2 games they won, and which 3 games they trailed by 10 points or more.

The Rams-Seahawks game (where Jackson had 11 carries) was 10-6, Hawks, going into the fourth quarter. Also, Jackson only had four games of 25 or more carries, and never had more than 30 in a game, despite being the only running back of note on the team. Simply put, Pat Shurmur does not run the ball much.

Your right Spagnuolo is a Def guy but he is the head coach, who knows what he told Shurmur to call

The Rams ran 429 times for 1578 yards last year.

We ran 413 times for 1646 yards last year.

The Rams were 14th in rushing attempts last year. Maybe they could have run more last year .... but they were hardly a team that never ran the ball.

I should be more specific...they didn't run the ball as much with respect to passing.

The were above average in rushing attempts in the NFL, and 5th in passing attempts.

There's no question that he is a pass first coach .... but to say that they never ran the ball is ridiculous and factually inaccurate. Plus, a huge part of the reason they had so many passes was because they threw a ton of short passes .... many of which took the place of running plays. (as happens, by definition, in the WCO) The Rams passes a ton, but only averaged 5.2 yards/attempt. They threw short a ton as part of their run game. They really only had 1 RB of consequence. Is that on the OC? Steven Jackson had the 2nd most carries in the NFL last year. How many more times should they have run him?

I should add that I was completely against the Shurmur hiring. I didn't like his St Louis offense, and thought that he was too young, inexperienced, and unprepared. However, to slam him for not running the ball is not really fair.

Are we saying that we should have made Rubin a bigger part of our running game?

Who are you talking to here?

I swear, why does EVERY thread have to get turned into something else.

Good news on RUBIN SIGNING A 3 YEAR DEAL, which has nothing to do w/ Hillis or the friggin' Rams.

He is worthy IMO and played well for us overall. We need to get him some help, but he is a sold core to build around.

nah, his arm sucks. he'd never be able to hit the 20 yard out route on the fullback option play.

Now that Alex Mack is a receiving threat, I don't care about arm strength.

inside out, outside in.... whatever. I think it's just nice to see us - for once - proactively taking care of the people we're smart enough to recognize as our core for now and the future.

So over four years he'll make $27.5 mil... or $6.875 per. Not bad, Athyba! Well worth it IMO.

My prediction for Rubin is something like 6 years, 6-6.5 million per. Call it a hunch.

So we have him locked up for this year and three more after this year.

Excellent! is the first thought that comes to mind.

In other news the Browns signed FB Will Ta'ufo'ou (1st year) and RB Xavier Omon (3rd year) to our Practice Squad replacing their respective positions there.

Edit: We lost Porter to the Rams and Williams to Seattle.
