Brad Maynard will be the new punter for the Browns when practice resumes on Wednesday, according to team sources.

Richmond McGee, who punted eight times on Sunday for a 36.0-yard average in a 27-17 loss to the Bengals, has not been waived officially yet, but a change is apparently coming soon.

Maynard was with our special teams coach in Chicago, as was McGee, so there's that.

This guy use to be with the Vikings. I remember thinking it was odd with Maynard kicking to Cribbs. I know I am showing my age....

I don't recall the numbers, but he wasn't booming it by anyone's standards.

It just sucks that he's the only one that was cut loose after that game.

Browns agree to terms with punter Brad Maynard

by Nate Ulrich on September 13, 2011

in Brad Maynard,Cleveland Browns,NFL,Richmond McGee

The Browns have agreed to a deal with veteran punter Brad Maynard, a league source confirmed. NFL Network's Jason La Canfora first reported the news today.

The 37-year-old Maynard is expected to replace Richmond McGee, who punted eight times for an average of 36 yards this past Sunday in his first NFL regular-season game. The Browns were hoping McGee could continue to fill in for Reggie Hodges, who suffered a season-ending torn Achilles tendon on Aug. 2.

McGee injured a disc in his back during the Browns' season-opening loss to the Cincinnati Bengals and will be place on injured reserve today, agent David Canter wrote on Twitter this afternoon. When asked Monday about injuries, Browns coach Pat Shurmur never mentioned McGee, who had three punts of 30 yards or less against the Bengals.

Maynard spent the past 10 seasons with the Chicago Bears. He has ties to Browns special teams coordinator Chris Tabor, who worked for the Bears from 2008-10.

Maynard served as the Houston Texans' punter during the preseason, but he was cut on Sept. 3.

Last season, he punted 83 times for an average of 40.1 yards. In 14 NFL seasons, he has punted 1,258 times for an average of 41.9 yards.

well good, this will stabilize a shaky position on the team that really did hurt us last week.

Will he hold for us too?

Good question. I have to imagine he will, and that's a pretty important job.

McGee had some nice punts last week, but the problem was he didn't have nice ones when we really needed it.

Probably a very different game if his first punt doesn't give the ball to the Bengals so close.

Meh! Punters are always on a shorter leash, so too will Brad Maynard.

We really missed Hodges Sunday. Know one should be surprised by this move.

it wasn't just distance, but poor hang times as well. if you 'miss/shank' 2 punts and have poor hang times on the others (allowing a better opportunity for a return), then you are not going to have a job as a NFL punter.

he did have 1 really nice punt, but Cribbs couldn't keep himself from going into the endzone to down it, unfortunately.

What makes you think that?
Maynard has been available,if the FO thought he was better, wouldn't they have signed him earlier?
Just funnin with you,I know the answers.Youth movement, shortened training camp, new schemes.I'm sure before the season is over they'll be a hundred more.

I recall Solomon Wilcots commenting on a short McGee, sounding pretty baffled. Definitely one of many glaring faults in that team that day.

Evidently McGhee was playing with a herniated disc in his back that he injured in warm-ups. Browns didn't have any other options of course, so he decided to gut it out. If indeed true, the guy deserves a pass here. They wouldn't have put him on IR if they didn't respect the guy, they would have just cut him and given him a small injury settlement.

40 yard career average for Maynard, not great, but just as long he averages over 35 and keeps them out of our territory.

That makes more sense, the guy had a respectable 46.3 yard average in preseason.. not great but not real bad.. he had a 36 yard average in the first game.. you don't just FORGET how to punt... and injury seems far more plausible.

More on Brad Maynard

He only has a career average of 41.9 yards, but just as important as that is the net average and that is 38.1 yards per punt attempt. This is a telling stat in that his hang time is probably pretty good.

He also averaged 29 inside the 20 yard line in his career per season. (1 out of every 3 punts).

Brad Maynard's touch back % is only 7.9%.

Maynard is Mr. Coffin Corner. He's great at those directional kicks.

Now, our offense just has to get up the field enough to use them

Agent: Richmond McGee headed to IR

Associated Press

CLEVELAND -- Browns punter Richmond McGee injured his back during warm-ups before Sunday's season opener, a possible explanation for his horrendous NFL debut.

Agent David Canter said McGee suffered a herniated disk before Cleveland hosted Cincinnati, and that the injury was so bad that McGee was kicking without feeling in his legs. McGee averaged just 36 yards on eight punts, shanking his first one 20 yards and later following it with punts of 28 and 30 yards.

AFC North blog

Walker ESPN.com's James Walker writes about all things AFC North in his division blog.

• Blog network: NFL Nation

Canter said the Browns plan to place McGee on injured reserve later Tuesday.

"He's extremely disappointed, but grateful he got the opportunity," Canter said of McGee, who was signed after Reggie Hodges went down with a season-ending injury.

There are reports the Browns have signed veteran Brad Maynard, a 14-year veteran who spent the past 10 years with the Chicago Bears. He punted for Houston during the preseason but was waived by the Texans on Sept. 3.

A Browns spokesman said the team has no roster moves to report at this time.

Maynard's agent, Chad Wiestling, did not immediately return messages.

Canter said McGee "felt a twinge" while he was warming up on the field Sunday but decided to play.

"He told me it got to the point during the game where he couldn't even feel his legs," Canter said. "I knew something was wrong, either he was hurt or he had forgotten how to kick. I felt bad for him because the fans were on him badly, so I called him after the game and he told me what happened."

Canter said McGee does not need surgery.

The Browns have been in a bind at punter since losing Hodges, who tore his Achilles in training camp on Aug. 2. Hodges was one of the AFC's top punters last season.

Maynard could bring them experience as a punter and holder for Phil Dawson on extra points and field goals.

The 37-year-old has kicked for the New York Giants and Bears, who released him on July 25. Maynard has averaged 41.9 yards per punt in his career. However his 40.1-yard average on 83 punts last season ranked him 32nd in the league, and his net average of 35.2 was 29th overall.

Browns first-year special teams coach Chris Tabor spent the past three seasons with Maynard in Chicago.

Right ... but I'm trying to wonder how big a few yards is on the "net" ... maybe Chicago just didn't have good gunners? If 24 of the 83 punts were inside the 20 then he also wasn't trying to boot it as much on those ... so I'm not as concerned.

35.2 Net Avg. according to this list puts him 30th. 40.0 (Within 5 yards) would have gotten him 3rd ... I just don't know how much of a big deal 3 to 5 yards is on the punt when we also don't know how the gunners and total coverage teams were doing?

I thought the only back injury he had was that his back was too close to where his punts landed.
