Colts fans are going to see some ugly football the rest of the way. Kerry Collins and Curtis Painter? I think we might have a winner for the Andrew Luck sweepstakes.

Irsay: Peyton Manning will miss the season
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 26, 2011, 9:53 AM EDT

The Colts are 0-3, but their season is essentially over. Peyton Manning will not be coming back to save the team.

Owner Jim Irsay announced at a breakfast meeting with Super Bowl donors Monday that Manning will miss the entire season, according to WISH-TV in Indianapolis.

Irsay may be speaking out of turn, but you can do that when you own the team. Even if the Colts don’t make a move to injured reserve official just yet, this is a sign the Colts have no expectations Manning will return.

We suspect the Colts will have to follow this up with an official statement. It makes no sense for Irsay to say this publicly otherwise.

The article reports that Manning wouldn’t be able to practice until December. If the Colts place Manning on injured reserve, he couldn’t officially practice at all because of league rules.

Assuming Manning is down for the count in 2011, the question becomes who else besides Manning will be on the Colts quarterback depth chart in 2012.

Indianapolis will surely have a high draft pick in a good year for college quarterbacks. They may just be high enough to draft Andrew Luck first overall.

Can you imagine if the Colts go from Manning to Luck. Talk about good luck.

There are other bad teams in the NFL. I just don't see the Colts being the worst team at the end of the season. I get that Manning is everything to that team....he puts points on the board and keeps the defense off the field, but they shouldn't be this bad with him.

And even if they do finish with the worst record....who says they draft Luck if Manning's recovery is on schedule? Manning would be good to go for another 3-4 years. And who's to say Luck will want to sit for a few years behing Manning. AND there's no guarantee Luck will even be a good NFL QB.

i'm cheering for the Colts to win a few games. the only worse team to get Luck would be Cinci. Indy has been spoiled, it'd be nice to see them have to build their whole team like the rest of the NFL.

I personally think the Colts, well some players of the Colts, will try to tank games if they don't get a win within the next few games..

No big surprise there.

The Colts would be well served to pick up David Garrard. (Who I can't believe is still available) He's got decent accuracy, (better than either Painter or Collins) He also has superior arm strength compared to Collins, and could get the WRs involved in that offense again. He completed 64% of his passes past year, with a 7.97 average per attempt, and 23 TD to 15 INT.

You can't tell me that he wouldn't be a better option than either guy they are currently using. Hell, with barely competent QB play they probably would have beaten us and Pittsburgh.

I actually thought that once Painter settled down he looked ok considering the situation he was thrown into. I don't expect him to make anybody forget about Manning and I don't think he'll get a starting gig like Cassell at the end of the year (if he continues to play) but I think with some reps in practice he'll be good enough to win a few games.

Wonder if there would be any interest in Favre?

I'd rather have Jake Delhomme than Brett Favre at this point.

There has to be some injury-type deal going on.

There you go again, wanting to give QBs time to develop, learn and settle in. You should know if they can't throw a 70 yard bomb from the age of 3, they will never be a good NFL QB.

Little play on words LOL Good one

Well, I don't think that Mannings career is over so it would work out perfectly if they went 0-16, won the Luck sweepstakes and then Manning comes back for a year or two to tutor Luck. Tell me that's not a real positive for Colts fans.

I think they'll be able to live with a down year..

Where are the conspiracy theorists, that Manning is faking his injury so the team can get Luck for the future and he can attend acting classes this year for his post-NFL acting career?

Why else would they go into the season with Collins and painter?

In other news, ticket sales plummeted on news that Manning was done for the year.... quick, retract that statement.

There are other bad teams. But none of them are playing a 1st place schedule like the Colts are. (I guess the Chiefs count, but they also face the Broncos twice).

If I'm the Colts and I know Manning is coming back healthy and I have the number one pick I put for auction. It goes to the highest bidder. They could retool their entire team with the draft picks/players they receive in return.

Drafting Luck would be a nightmare. That's pretty much telling Manning, "We don't think you can play more than two more years."

Trade the pick. Restock the cupboards (including a talented QB you can develop) and move on with Manning.

I think given Manning's history with the Colts and his professionalism, I think this is one of those rare opportunities where you sit down and discuss it with him.. and his doctors... I wouldn't just go do it on draft day without having that conversation with him first. Maybe his intention is to only play 1 or 2 more years...

I am going under the assumption that they would talk to the dude. I would think he would want to play more than one or two more years.

And yes Manning has been a professional, but he still has a huge ego. Look at his contract, he played hardball with the Colts and wouldn't take less money than Tom Brady got.

I had a bone graft between the 5th and 6ty vertbrae back in 1991. Worst surgery I ever had as far as pain goes. I was out of work for 7 weeks. I was a foreman so my work was computer and paper work. I could not drive either. I slept in a recliner as laying down was the worst position (most painful) to be in.
I had pain from my elbows up my arms to the base of my skull. The pain recedes a little everyday.
I can see where he might not be back this year and to me that would make sense. I could see him not playing again as one hit the wrong way could put him in wheel chair for life.
I know several other people who had similar surgery and after a few years they had to have another surgery.
I have spinal stenosis right below the bone graft. Raising my arms up causing numbness in both arms and hands. Is it related? Don't really know. I have had therapy twice and still have the problems. I had the shock and ouch test twice (shock and needle pricks along the arms, shoulders and hands monitored on a screen and recorded on a paper tape), plus am MRI.
When you are dealing with the spinal column and nerves things can get complicated real quick.

Based on their recent draft history... I don't know about that...

a 1st place schedule only means 2 games different from your division. you play the same AFC and NFC division as the other teams in your division (AFC North and NFC South for the Colts) and then the 1st place team from the other AFC divisions (Chiefs and Pats for the Colts).

now, we can discuss the AFC North and NFC South being a tough schedule as I think it is.

Why isn't Manning on IR?

Practice.. IN DECEMBER?

Really?

What a waste of a roster spot...

Is it all PR?

As crazy as it sounds, the Colts have an out...

You don't put a clause in a contract if you NEVER think you'll use it...

They can get out of Mannings deal with no problem after this season...

Hell if they find themselves staring at Luck, sell Manning to the highest bidder, Teams like Miami/SF who have been starving for a franchise guy will give up something for a quick chance to win some attendance...

Can't see these Colts being worst out there. And even then Luck would be a questionable move. Backups will have experience, and maybe another vet before season is out. But if Manning is done, Luck would be a real plum to fall into their laps.
