Ok my wife and I were just talking and something came to me that I think my be relevent to Colt and the offense. Normally the QB will be looking over photos and talking with the OC about plays while the defense is on the field. With Shumur being the HC and the OC I dont see any of that going on our sidelines at all. I see colt talk to some guy ( I assume the QB coach) and there is no heres what we want to do here is whats going wrong help going on for him. Just a quick meet and Colts off walking around. Shurmur is busy coaching the team while the defense is on the field and I think that may be affecting Colt in a negative way. The person Colt needs to be talking to is the guy who is calling the plays right now to go over the set of plays why the last set broke down what he is doing right and wrong. I see none of that.
So could Shurmur being the HC and OC be in effect hurting us overall?
Im going to watch for it more in 2 weeks to see what work the coaches are doing with Colt while he is on the sidelines, but I think he may need the guy in charge of the offense to be working with him during the live and may explain why hes not progressing as much as we thought he would be and in alot of regards looks to be regressing.

I almost always see him talking to Whipple on the sidelines ... not sure if that's who you mean.

Pat Shurmur must silence locker room rumblings from Browns By Marla Ridenour Beacon Journal sports columnist Published: October 2, 2011 - 09:30 PM CLEVELAND: Players on the wrong side of a 31-13 drubbing should go away angry. But rumblings of discontent in the Browns’ locker room after the visiting Tennessee Titans blew them out Sunday must be nipped in the bud by rookie coach Pat Shurmur before they turn into something bigger. Running back Peyton Hillis and tight end Evan Moore could not hide their frustration about their involvement in the offense before they left Cleveland Browns Stadium. Second-year running back Montario Hardesty shared the workload with Hillis, who was recovered from last week’s bout with strep throat. Down 21-6 at halftime and forced to throw, quarterback Colt McCoy targeted Hardesty seven times in the third and fourth quarters and Hillis five, even though Hardesty dropped four passes during the game. Hillis finished with 10 rushes for 46 yards and five catches for 23 yards, and Hardesty contributed seven carries for 22 yards and five receptions for 49 yards. But when Shurmur gambled on fourth-and-1 from the Tennessee 41 with the Browns trailing 14-6 with about six minutes left in the second half, he tried a flip to rookie Armond Smith, who was stuffed by Titans safety Michael Griffin. That didn’t show much faith in Hillis, who tied for 12th in the league in third-and-1 rushing conversions last season, making 10 out of 12. “He’s the fastest guy we’ve got,” Shurmur said of Smith. “We felt like if we got him to the perimeter, it was a chance for a big play.” Hillis had been dropped in his tracks on the previous down, a third-and-1, and didn’t sound like he liked that call very much. Hillis lined up at fullback with Hardesty at tailback, and Shurmur dialed up a dive play to try and surprise the Titans. “Take it up with the coach. I’m just running the play as he tells me to do,” Hillis said. That wasn’t the only question that drew that kind of reaction from Hillis. Asked if he was frustrated over the way the offensive personnel were used, Hillis said: “You have to take that up with the coaches. That’s nothing I can predict. I have no control over that.” Pressed on whether he needed more involvement to keep his rhythm going, Hillis said: “I’ve always found myself to be a guy who gets in a rhythm and gets things done. What the game plan and what the coaches presented, that’s what they wanted to go with. Being a player you follow the coach’s orders and do what he tells us to do and you respect that.” Hillis rushed for 1,177 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, when he was the Browns’ workhorse, a worn-down one by the end of the season. “I think having two running backs is an advantage,” Browns center Alex Mack said. “I think it keeps them fresh. I think they’re both good runners. Having the threat of either one helps our offense. I think we should find a way to use both of them effectively. I think that’s very possible.” Shurmur hasn’t found a way yet, at least if the questions in Hillis’ mind are any indication. Some of Hillis’ emotion could come from the fact that his agent and the Browns have failed to agree on a contract extension that seemed like a top priority as the season opener approached. Hillis, in his fourth year, will be an unrestricted free agent in 2012 if no deal is reached. He’s making $600,000 in 2011. Then there was Adam Schefter’s report on ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown that some of Hillis’ teammates had privately questioned why he couldn’t play a week ago, wondering if his contract status played a part. The Browns do not seem to have a running back controversy, at least not yet. Most NFL teams have gone to a two-back system, and Hillis has to realize that being spelled by Hardesty will extend his career. But if Hardesty’s playing time is eroding Hillis’ confidence and making him question his value to the Browns, it must be addressed by Shurmur immediately. This is not the time to divide the locker room, as the Tim Couch-Kelly Holcomb controversy did in 2003. If the contract is Hillis’ issue, Shurmur cannot let it erode team chemistry. Hillis is not the only player questioning the inconsistency of his role in the first four games. Moore seemed just as miffed after contributing only one catch for 15 yards and being targeted only one other time in a game when McCoy set a Browns’ single-game mark with 61 pass attempts. Moore expected to be a big part of the offense after signing a two-year contract extension Sept. 8 for just under $3 million per year. He played only eight snaps the previous two games against the Indianapolis Colts and the Miami Dolphins and judging from his mood, Sunday was no better. Asked if he felt frustration over his number not being called, Moore laughed and said: “I know what you’re saying. Yeah, it’s tough. It’s very tough.” When the inconsistency of him getting in for a couple of plays and then disappearing again was brought up, Moore said, “Yeah, I agree.” The Browns have a bye next weekend before traveling to Oakland on Oct. 16. Asked if that issue would be addressed in the next two weeks, he said: “I don’t know. I honestly don’t know. I don’t know.” If Sunday’s discontent from Moore and Hillis was an indication of problems bubbling beneath the surface, Shurmur needs to hash them out with his players face to face. He has the perfect time to do it with this week’s bye. If players have lost confidence in Shurmur as an offensive coordinator, that may need a month of Sundays to repair. If Shurmur can bridge the gap with Hillis and Moore, it could be a big step in restoring their faith. web page

Probably, I know I see him talk to someone but its just brief. The problem Im thinking maybe who hes talking to cant tell him anything (aside from mech etc) because they are not gameplanning the next plays. I dont even think Shurmur knows the next play call until he thinks of it. . Except for the first scripted part how ever many plays that is.

It amazes me that there is so much complaining this year already.
Last year there was no complaining from players, even when we were on QB #3, and even when we were 1-5.

Mangini is not coming back. Let it go.
Maybe there was no complaining because the complainer was afraid Mangini would give him a pop quiz in front of the whole team. LOL...
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

Actually this is something I would have to hear the players talk because from taking the comments at face value. Hillis was asked about the play calling and he said you have to ask coach I cant control it. Then in the piece it says "when pressed further" so they were on him about it and he again said Take it up with the coach. If anything he may have been frustated with being press on the same question over and over. On Moore it says he "laughed" that doesnt sound like someone who is disgruntled.
Tone inflections, facial expressions and such would revel alot on how they feel IMHO.
However I do think the players are frustrated with how the offense is being run and that does tie in with this thread very nicely. Should be an interesting bye week if nothing else.

When local reporters are reporting that players are frustrated ..... well, where there's smoke, there's fire. I heard Moore on the radio, and he was ticked off. Same as last week. A laugh doesn't change that. http://www.ohio.com/news/top-stories/mar...browns-1.238254 Quote:

Must be nice to be Hardesty. Given so many snaps (more than the STARTING running back), and just as many carries/receptions without earning it on the field. Truely pitiful, and pretty much a repeat of the screw job in Denver with Hillis and McDaniels in Denver. There is no logical, statistical, physical, moral, or intellectual reason why the Golden One, Montario Hardesty, should be given more playing time than Hillis. I think that was proven today, but will it make a difference. I doubt it, people have been on the "give Hardesty more carries" train since the season started for some reason, and it's not the logical progression of things either...he should be coming in to spell Hillis, NOT replace him. Hillis has proven his value, all Hardesty has done is get drafted higher. It's a big indication of Hillis' professionalism that he didn't call out his coach as being full of it, ala Harrison last year.
Sad really

Well thats what I was saying, I didnt hear them. Now knowing you heard the interviews I can accept that they are frustrated and what I thought in the starting post is going to become an issue even more encompising then I first had thought. .

Moore should be more upset at McCoy not hitting him regularly. We did abandon the run too often.
I think Shurmur is calling an okay game. Not great, not awful. It'd look a lot better if he didn't have a QB who looked like he has never played a professional game in his life. Which is his fault for not handing the ball off more.
So is he hurting the team? Kind of is my final answer.
you had a good run Hank.

I agree YTown...something isnt right at the moment and its not a good sign.
I think that Shurmur is trying to coach this team as if he had every piece in place. We have playmakers, but he seems to be trying to fit players to a scheme right now rather than the other way around.
Hillis is a guy that needs 30+ touches to be truly effective, he wears down a defense, plays hard, strong, and smart...He has great hands, a great running style and a great attitude...he wants to be out there and he wants the ball...but were trying to use him like a LeSean McCoy or SJax or someone he isnt.
Hardesty is a good player but right now he is a backup. Armond is fast...and could be a good change of pace back...on 2nd and 6, maybe a 1st and 10 late in the game after Hillis has been a hammer...
when it comes to our pass catchers...
Little should be on the field constantly...and on the outside doing what he does best...be big, make the tough catches. Cribbs should be our guy running the slants and whatnot getting open across the middle and MoMass should be doing basically what he has done so far. He seems to be the only guy who is being used to his ability.
Watson is doing what he can, but why no plays up the seam...pulling the defense away? I havent seen any of that. He almost always stays in the picture on the TV Moore...not at all used right. He is the only guy it seems that Colt will throw a timing pass to, and put zip on it right away. He is a trusted guy right now.
I look at the Browns and they should be in one of 4 sets at almost all times...
The power I (or Pro Set) with Hillis on the field, sometimes Hardesty...sometimes Owen. The 1 back (Hillis) 2 TE (Moore and Watson) 2 WR (MoMass and Little/Cribbs) or the 1 back 1 TE 3 WR sets...
Shurmur has to start to understand that Hillis, Moore, Watson, Massaquoi, Cribbs, and Little are our playmakers. Other guys should be used sparingly and only when a situation dictates. Use the playmakers, use them often, and use them to work off of each other.
Shurmur seems to try to beat teams with his playcalling instead of his players and that is what is hurting this offense the most.
When it comes to the defense...well they had a bad day today...Our DBs success is predicated on our DL getting pressure and we did none of that...Hasselbeck did whatever he wanted out there, and today was a day to more just sit back, rush 4 and hope...and put the other 7 in coverage and try to cover as much ground as possible with our guys...we didnt do that.
Total team fail...
but, if Shurmur wants to succeed he needs to use his playmakers...TO THEIR STRENGTHS...dont try and fit them into a certain mold...mold what they do into your plan.
Players make plays...not the other way around

So how exactly can McCoy throw him the ball more if hes not in the game? not sure how many snaps this game but 8 snaps in the previous 2?

I think that 2nd and 1 or 2 would be a great place to spot Smith. Man, you could suck the defense up with play action to the big back and pitch or swing the ball to Smith. That could be a big play, or worse case, you play 3rd and short.
I just see so many illogical play calls and senseless player substitutions.
I would immediately simplify things if I were the coach, much as you said.
Base set: 2 back with Hillis and Hardesty. Both are superior blockers and receivers to Marecic. They should be in the game long before Marecic sniffs the field.
When you go 1 back, you could bring in either Moore as a 2nd TE, or Little or Cribbs as a 3rd WR. You could even line up Moore in the backfield as a FB, and either leave him there to run a route from the backfield, or motion him out. We are allowed to use motion ..... which we also seem to have forgotten.
When I go 3 wide, I would use a rotation of Little/Cribbs/Massaquoi/Robiske. We have a lot of questions to be answered at the position, so I would rotate them left/right as well as inside/out to see who can do what, and if McCoy will throw to any of them.
That's it. I would drop Smith from the TE rotation. If we go 2 back, then we can block with one of them. Both Hillis and Hardesty are superior athletes to Smith, and both are capable blockers as well. Each creates more of a mismatch for defenses than Smith does.
I agree with you about Watson. last year he was a terror in one on one coverage up the seem. He burned so many teams last year, and this year we don't even run it. hell, we play a team in cover 2 and the TE up the seam is a given ..... but we just refuse to use what works.
I just don't get it. In so many ways, this offense has regressed from last year. That's really doing something.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

I told the other Btowns Backers at our bar during the lousy episode yesterday that we were crumbling, and it was pretty crappy attitude day overall. Got bad, got worse. I would insist on an OC for games. Shurm seems to have trouble getting from paper to players on his field. The routes are arguably too short. The tackling is horrific, the penalty trend is alarming. But the choices being made are not giving us an identity on offense. I am convinced plays are being called with a magic hat pin. We need to get better; it starts with the offense who let us down. It includes the playcaller who better dissect his own competence in hindsight. I believe when you do a lot of things not so well, you concentrate on fewer things, and find some stuff you are better at and go with those. But a lot of what is wrong here is mental, especially tackling and catching. Dawson and Pontbriand were good, punting solid. Everything else needs hashed.

Not for nothin,, but we have a rookie HC, a new system on both D and O, new coaches all over the place, players light on experience, a QB that has 11 starts and you wonder what could be holding them back?
If you ask me, it's all of the above. The only way we find out if he's the problem or the solution is to wait it out..
I have serious doubts that talking to Whipple vs Talking to Shurmur is the crux of the problem.. Not sure if it helps or hurts, but I don't believe that it's worth worrying about at this moment.

Put guys on the field who can make plays..
Cribbs, Hillis, Watson, and Moore should be on the field for most of the offensive snaps IMO... Watch our highlights from last year.. you see who makes the plays.. why keep them off the field?
Hardesty hasn't earned jack squat.. Hillis is back.. put the KING back in the game!!!

I think its starting to look like Shurmer IS NOT Head Coach material.
I try to give everyone a chance, but his player usage, play calling, and side line attitude just doesnt make much sense to me. Hillis is a beast and on 3rd and short we DONT use him?
Sign Evan Moore to an extension then dont play him?
Alot of things going on in these games just confuse me.
I would like to see Holmgren answer some questions, it almost seems like he has gone into hiding as I havnt read or seen a peep from him.

If you look back to the comments in the poll thread predicting the number of wins this season, most of the posters were calling for 4-6 wins if we were lucky. With that kind of outlook, there must have been the expectations of games like this one....especially our 1st game against a decent opponent (with the top ranked defense in the league). Lots of rookie (both player and coach) type mistakes.

And it's hard not to agree with them. They are our 2 most consistent offensive performers and they aren't in the game. It's not like we are amassing points and yardage without them.

What's frustrating to me is that we all kinda knew that this wasn't a year where we were expecting the playoffs or even anything remotely close to that.
Yet some of the very same people that said we'd be lucky to win 6 games are complaining the loudest about...well, everything.
A team that you expect to win only 6 games is going to have games like we've seen so far.. Loss to a team that we should have beaten, last second win over a team we should beat, destruction of a team that's missing thier leader.. and another loss to a team that has the best D in the league.
Seems to me, we are right on track...

I wouldn't call Moore one of our two "most consistent performers." He has shown a pretty weak effort on a handful of plays (the deep pass v. Cincy where he stopped running because he had to poop, the jump ball v. Leon Hall, one more bad play in the Indy game I can't immediately remember.) Massaquoi and Watson have been more consistent than Moore. Heck, Alex Smith probably qualifies.

My favorite is that people were saying that Evan Moore can't be in the game because it's too obvious of a passing play because he can't block.
We threw the ball 61 times, he was never on the field.

I believe he caught two passes.. pretty good for a guy that wasn't even on the field.....

The curious thing with Moore is how big a part of things he was in preseason. Then the team signs him to an extension, and now he rarely sees the field. I usually always say we (the fans) aren't at practice every day, so we don't see all that goes into these decisions, but it seems odd that he's been nonexistent recently.
As for Hillis, I don't get it. It's almost like the front office is trying to force Hardesty in to validate having chosen him. For serveral years, it's seemed we needed that back we could give the ball to, who would get stronger as the game goes on a la Jamaal Lewis in his prime. We find that last year in Hillis, and now he doesn't seem to be "the guy". Is Shurmur going too much by "the book" with splitting carries?
It's frustrating. I see a lack of talent in many areas on this team, and certainly thought a 5/6 win season was likely. That being said, it's disturbing to see that guys who appear to be playmakers aren't given as much opportunity to help the team as it seems they should.

I gotta admit, I don't get it either with Moore being absent so much. And the whole Hillis thing yesterday was odd to say the least. Hillis was moving the chains so why not ride him all the way down.. Fourth and 1,, and the flip to Smith? Didn't understand that. But then Shurmur said that they looked at how the titans were setting up and felt they could make a big play using smith.. Had it worked, I guess I'd be happy as hell.. Then we are 4th and 1 inch or so,, Man,, when you are down, you gotta take those chances is what I thought, but then Shurmur said he didn't go for it because of field position.. That one,, I'm sorry, but 1 inch to go and you are down by a ton of points and there is still time to make a comeback? No,, I'd think you gotta go for it. But those are the decisions they made and I bet you that Holmgren wouldn't have made those decisions.. I'm guessing he'd have gone for them both in a more traditional manner,, by using his proven battering ram.. Hillis. Where these rookie head coach mistakes? DId shurmur outthink himself? I think both answers should be YES. But shurmur seems like a smart guy, hopefully he'll figure it out.. I'm sure he's talking with Holmgren this morning about those kinda things.

Right now Shurmur looks like the kid brutally trying to hammer the square peg into a round hole on his construction toy.
We have looked really pathetic this year on offense.
It is a combination of a great number of factors ...but coaching and QB play are near the top. Both need to improve or we'll see a lot more games that look like 3/4 of the games we have played so far this year .... even against a really easy schedule.

I don't think it's on Shurmur...not trying to defend him as I'm still in wait and see mode with him. There is some stuff I don't like....like shotgun on 3rd and short, empty backfields, no play action etc but I the Offense gets guys open somehow and that's always a good sign
Fwiw, the Rams look totally lost without him on Offense....many on here complained since they were a below AVG Offense last year...they are worse now although they should be much better (all the young core guys having more experience)

You just explained why you think he will be ok as an OC but he's not just the OC.. he's also the HC... and is he hurting the team by trying to do both.

8 snaps in two games is virtually not being on the field, my statement was not meant to be taken that literally

The Rams lost Amendola, and have had both Bradford and Jackson banged up this year.
Frankly I didn't think that their offense was all that good last year, and their defense, which was their strength last year, has nosedived this year.
They are 27th in total offense this year, and they were 26th last year. They are 26th in total defense this year, and were 19th last year.
The Rams have new receivers all over the place (Sims-Walker, Salas, Pettis, and Curry) ..... and Bradford's safety net, Amendola, is hurt. They don't have a receiving threat at TE, and lost last year's starter to Denver. They are about 19 yards/game under what they did from a passing standpoint this year to last.
Steven Jackson has also only played 3 games with 23 rushes. They picked up Cadillac Williams, and he's been steady, but isn't a breakaway threat.

I get the feeling Shurmur is treating the season like a 16 game preason so he can figure out his team. And I dont like it.
