Maybe making changes isn't that Savage wants.

People talk about continuity in the coaching staff.....why not the line?

Soon, in this very thread, we will hear things like,,,you never pass on a Franchise QB

you damm sure will skippy ... and why .. CAUSE ITS TRUE ...

Quote:

they are foolish in that not one of those three guys can make a difference without that Dang line.. NOT ONE OF THEM,,,,,,

your right ... but guess what skippy ..... we can have a MUCH IMPROVED line w/o taking Thomas .. U guys seem to think if we pas on Joe are line can and never will be GOOD ENOUGH .. well thats way more foolish than thinking BQ can make a diff w/o a decent OL ..

Quote:

Sorry if I sound a little annoyed,,, But geez,,, we need to address the foundation of this team

well Geez skippy what were Stien and Hank .. window dressing??? *LOL* ... with Stien the OL has TAKEN A MAJOR STEP FORWARD ... and I am not near as high on hank as most of u .. hes a below avg. C in this division ... but he was the BEST AVAILABLE .. so it was a good move ...

so now we've adressed 2/5ths of the OL all ready .. and at one spot we went from HORRIBLE ro WELL ABV. AVG ... I would call that ADRESSING THE FOUNDATION ... should we continue to adress it??? ABSOLUTELY ... but we can do that w/o taking Joe at 1 if BQ is available ... (sorry but anyone that wants AP over either of these two just don't get it .. ) ....

Quote:

Now if he can land thomas in the first,, we really and truely have the makings of a very very good if not great Oline... It may take a year to gel,, but I believe the foundation will be there,,

your correct .. BUT if we pass on Joe in rnd 1 and take a gaurd in 2 AND OR 3 ... we will stillahve improved the FOUNDATION alot and have a shot at a solid OL in 08 .... plus then we can take a LT in rnd 1 or 2 next year if the opportunity presents itself ..

U see heres your problem ... especially with me skippy ... I am the #1 advocate of OL(DL also) ... I've preached it since day 1 on the board ... and i have NEVER EVER wanted the "sexy" pick ... NOT ONCE ... matter of fact for the last two years we've been at exact ends of the spectrum before the year started on how good our OL will be .. and we both know whos been right ... ....

so i am not one of these dolts that changes from OL to skill player as the draft gets closer ... yet i still want the skill guy this year .. whys that?? its really really simple .. QB IS BY FAR THE MOST IMPORTANT POSITION ON A FOOTBALL TEAM ... and its not even close .. and even though u dont like it ....its A FACT ...

U DONT PASS ON A FRANCHIOSE QB .... period ..

sorry skippy, but its true ... fortunatly for U and many others BQ will go to Detroit .. so we will have a shot at Joe .. and if thats the case I will be dissapointed but THRILLED at the same time .. when u get either BQ or Joe its a cause for CELEBRATION .... even though many wont see it that way .. well thats their problem .. their lack of football acumen wont affect how good those two will be .. .. the only problem here .. and it is a MAJOR ONE is we pass on either Joe and/or BQ for anyone else .. then were SCREWED till Opies gone as he just dont get it ...

B .. i agree all coaches will say that football is won on the trenches .. but TALKS CHEAP ... and then u see how some FRANCHISES continue to ignore the OL and/or DL ... like ours until Opie showed up .. (sorry Vers .. the draft is the way to go l agree .. but he has brought in one or two OL man every year .. thats HARDLY IGNORING it .. it isnt the right way to build it but thats not IGNORING IT . ) ..

so although they say the OL and DL is where games our won their ACTIONS say they believe different ... no???

all those who believe were courting BQ to generate trade interest .. u guys are hillarious .. if we make it known we want BQ all were doing is generating interest in Detroits pick ... there going to want to get ahead of us to take him .. not trade with us .. *LOL* ...

our best move for trading is PRAYING that someone thinks Gruden wants BQ or Calvin ... casue then they may trade up with us to get them ... but this is a BAD DRAFT to trade down in ... we need PLAYMAKERS ... and we are ASSURED one at 3 ....

although trading down is popular .. its not the year to do it ... we need PLAYMAKERS and DIFFERENCE MAKERS ... and Joe/BQ and Calvin all fit that description ..

I am so confident Detroit will not take Quinn, I already made a sig bet on it.

That's good for you Diam, I think Detroit will trade down or Take Thomas, Peterson, or Johnson. Probably Thomas....

I guess I "just don't don't get it"

I want and believe that AP makes us a better team right NOW, while I would not be upset AT ALL with Thomas, I just don't feel he makes as much as an IMMEDIATE IMPACT as AP does. I will readily admit that I could be wrong on THomas's Immediate impact, as I DO understand how he improves TWO positions by allowing us to move Shaffer to the RT position, but......I beleive it WILL TAKE TIME for Thomas to adapt to the NFL LT demands. AP Improves us from the day he steps on the field.

I would not be upset AT ALL if we take Joe Thomas over AP, a little disappionted yes, but only a little .

I just feel Quinn will take to much time to develop into the QB you feel he can be. Will he eventually be the Franchise QB you want him to be, maybe, probably even, but we don't have the luxury of waiting on him to develop no matter what type of line we put in front of him.

Switching coaching staff's (which is what will happen if Romeo doesn't noticabley improve THIS YEAR), will only delay that time a QB needs to develop.

I've said this before but I'll say it again. While we have addressed the line so far, we need 4 O lineman, not just 1 guard. Have we already forgotten Bentley going down? Have we already forgotten Tucker missing 5 games? Have we forgotten the merry-go-round at center, Andruzzi limping through the season? How many of our opening day Olineman started in the last game? ONE.

We have: Shaffer, Steinbach, Fraley, Tucker. that's 4 starter quality offensive lineman. We nee 4 more to make it through a season. Unless you are counting on Sowells, Matua, Butler, and Hoffman to suddenly prove themselves starter quality. One of them might, so let's say we only need 3 more lineman.

If our Oline made holes like Indy or Pitts, Droughns would have 1400 yards. If Thomas is available, he's the pick, unless a 25 y/o Jim Brown is suddenly available.

Tell me this isn't possible: Steinbach gets injured in game one, Tucker relapses and retires. That gives us this starting lineup for the next 15 games:

Shaffer, Andruzzi, Fraley, Sowells, Butler. And that's assuming those 5 don't get injured all season. How you feeling now about Peterson running behind that? He won't get to the line of scrimmage. Quinn will be dead. Draft Thomas people AND a guard in round 2.

The only other acceptable options are to draft D lineman, because we're just as dead there.

Bingo. Immediate impact don't mean squat this year. We're 9-10 players away from being a playoff team. It ain't going to happen this year. We're still building for the future right now. Peterson or a QB is a luxury we can't afford.

Dude get a grip..this isn't over yet..everyone knows about the injury factor.
What I see happening is we're getting guys in who are more athletic and can get out and pull .
I see that happening in the draft also..
I see a different line assembled this year but it's going to be a guess as to what draftees are brought in.

OK .. u got me on that one .. he is a PLAYMAKER/DIFFERENCE MAKER .. no doubt .... but when u have the other 3 and u factor in his injury history/upright running style .. he SLIPS .. hes just a BAD PICK FOR US .. where as Joe and BQ are so much more sensible for so many reasons ..

I guess I "just don't don't get it"

admitting it is the first step ... theres hope for u after all ..

your right .. no matter who we take at 3 will make us a better team right now .. no doubt AP fills that bill ..

your right again ... AP will make the MOST IMMEDIATTE IMPACT ... RB is one of the easiest positions to step in and make an immediatte impact at ...

but that BETTER NOT BE THE GOAL HERE .. short term thinking when your in our position is a RECIPE FOR LONG TERM FAILURE .. its not like if we take AP were gonna be contenders .. just not gonna happen ..

u cant pass on a FRANCHISE QB OR LT for a RB .. its just BAD BAD STRATEGY ... RB's can be had in any rnd of the draft and are available all over the place via trade and FA ... and I'm talking QUALITY ABOVE AVG. RB'S .. in the last two years we've seen Edge/Chester Taylor/Thomas Jones/Travis Henry and a few other VERY GOOD RB'S made available for trade or FA .. the Jets STOLED Thomas Jones .. that is by far the best move of this off season .. they got him for PRACTICALLY NOTHING ..

no way your getting a QB or LT as easy as your getting a QUALITY RB .. not even close ..

no doubt BQ and Joe will take longer to have the impact that AP will . but when they do the RETURN ON INVESTMENT wont even be close ..

its really a NO BRAINER BRO ..

Quote:

Switching coaching staff's (which is what will happen if Romeo doesn't noticabley improve THIS YEAR),

1. thats just an ASSumption ...
2. if we take Joe or BQ that will give RAC more wiggle room .. cause they will take longer to develop ..
3. were going to IMPROVE for a WHOLE LOT OF REASONS regardless of anything else we do this off season .. here a short list ..

A. our division is COMING BACK TO US .. name one team in our division that is going to improve??? NONE ..... they've all ALL READY LOST KEY PLAYERS ... and the Stilers are getting KILLED having lost Porter, hartings and hiring a new coach .. we will have a realistic chance of winning 2 possibly 3 games in our division ..

B. along the same lines .. WE'VE IMPROVED with Stien ... thats HUGE all by itself .. and were not done ... so were MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION AND THERE MOVING BACK ..

C. our out of division schedule will be easier .. I dont even know who we play this year but it has to be EASIER THAN LAST YEARS .. we played a VERY TOUGH OUT OF DIVISION SCHEDULE last year ..

D. All our KIDS will have another years experience .. for KW, DQ, KW2 (fingers crossed), Jones, Pool and even Brey that will be HUGE .. i HIGHLY DOUBT either Frye or Anderson is are starting QB next year .. we either get BQ or aquire a vet IMO .. but if they are .. they to will have another years experience ..

were going to be a better football team (possibly much better .. no not playoff better but IMPROVED ... ) playing a weaker schedule ... RAC's job will be EASIER THIS YEAR .. does that mean he makes it?? No ... but it is not near as doom and gloom as most on here or in the media want to make it out to be ,..

BQ/Joe or BUST should be are motto ...

Its really quite simple .. the QB touches the ball on every play ... that oughta end the debate right there ..

Diam...and an offensive lineman blocks on every play, allowing that QB the opportunity to "touch" that ball on every play.

One can't happen without the other.

Do we want our QBs to be successful?...Sure we do...

So how successful have our QBs of the past been?...Not very...

WHY haven't our past QBs been successful?...Bad QBs?...OR...poor Oline that fail to protect our QBs?

Below are stats from 02 to 06 for sacks allowed, followed by the ranking and then the total sacks for that year.

yr...rnkg...sacs...
02...14th...35...
03...20th...40...
04...21st...41...
05...24th...45...
06...30th...54...

Do we see a trend here?...02, lowest sac number and best ranking of past 5 seasons was the Browns one and only playoff appearance with a record of 9-7...hmmm...

From that high point in 2002, the Browns offensive line has been in steady decline reaching a bottom last season.

Was the 2006 offensive line the reason our QB did not do better, or was it the that our QBs were so poor?...Tough question, huh?...Not really, IMO...

The 2006 Oline was nearly the worst in sacks given up in 2006, ranking 30th with 54 sacks...

But our QB ranked 23rd in passing yds and ranked "5th" in the NFL in completion percentage (10 starts min).

As everyone knows, Frye only started 5 games as a rookie and 13 games this season. Frye has tried to work within a offensive program that was very suspect and Mo Carthon ended up being fired and Frye had his second OC 6 games into his 2006 season.

Another factor in Frye's passing performance, the Browns running game...

The Browns running game ranked 31st in the NFL (in 2006) with 1335 rushing yds after ranking 24th with 1503 yds in 2005.

In 2005, Droughns was ranked 11th in the NFL in rushing with 1232 yds...

In 2006 Droughns was ranked 29th in the NFL with 758 yds...

So, do the Browns need a QB?...

Or do the Browns need an Offensive Line that can allow the QB and RB to perform to their max. ability?...

This is an easy call IMO...with out a quality offensive line, the Browns can't even determine how good our QBs are...

Without a better offensive line, our 1232 yd RB can't perform to his max ability either.

Without a better offensive line, our TEs and WRs can not perform to max ability either.

The best way to improve the Browns offense?...

CONTINUE TO INVEST HEAVILY IN THE OLINE...picking a LT in round 1 and a guard in rounds 2 or 3.

Then watch our skilled offensive players start performing to their max ability..

You act like nothing has been done for the line.

We just addressed 40% of the unit...the only real question is the other guard spot.

Yes, I know, you remember the first play of last season...LOL....GMAB.

The line was and will continue to be addressed, but there are other positions on the team.

If we don't get or take Thomas, it isn't the worst thing.

So does a Ref.

We need to buy one of those.

I'm in a quandry here. Diam makes a lot of sense in taking the QB. True, we can take the LT and quickly build the line for the long haul. But, if we do take the LT, can we get a QB one or two years from now? Whereas if we take the QB, we can likely still get an LT next year. Is that too late?

Part of me is all in favor of concentrating on the OL. The LT would, due to the other moves drafting him makes possible, set us up to have an above average line in '08.

The other part is if the QB is truely a franchise QB, the improvements made in the line thus far, with the addition of a first-day guard, could be enough to give him a fighting chance from opening day. That would make him an excellant pick. By '08 the line could be further improved, plus having a year together, and the QB would have a year under his belt.

In that scenario, '08 could be a very competitive season for the Browns.

However, if we build the line exclusively this year and Charlie proves to not have what it takes, even with a better line, where are we in our QB search? There are no free agent QB's to speak of and we may not be in a position next draft to take one. It could require us to trade up for a QB and still have to wait an additional year for him to get his feet wet. Plus, trading up means losing valuable draft picks of which we need everyone we can get.

If Quinn truely is a franchise-type QB then it's almost a no-braineer to take him and finish the line next season. LT's can be had in the second round if need be. Maybe not the "top 5" talent we seek, but surely better than "here, let me take that touchdown back" Shaffer.

I agree also that the easier schedule and the upheaval of our divisional opponents should gain us a better win/loss record this upcoming season. The defenses we'll face won't be nearly as brutal as those we faced early last season. That may help both the OL and the QB.

Quinn/Thomas. Thomas/Quinn. I just can't get a grip on it.

If we pick AP, then I'm afraid building for the future will have been the most smoke Savage has blown thus far.

Don't think the Browns haven't that..if some of us have..they certainly have.

...are we just gonna keep saying "We ignore the O-line" until we take a draft and spend all 7 picks on offensive linemen?

Yeah, I'm tired of hearing how we are "not addressing the O-line", that unless Savage drafts Thomas at #3 he is an idiot and once again ignoring the line. The draft is deep with guards and I fully expect at least one more in FA and/or through the draft, maybe even a future RT in the draft as well. That will be at least five starters signed in two years, (Bentley, Frailey, Shaffer, Steinbach & TBD). That is not ignoring the O-line. So if Savage wants to take Quinn or Peterson or CJ or Branch I'd perfectly fine with any of those choices because we need upgrades at all those positions. I also expect our line to have a much better season this year. I also won't be upset if we do draft Thomas. The sad part is we are so talent depleated that any of those guys fills a need, the good part is, Savage is filling those needs. He just can't do it all in three years so no matter what happens, there are going to be fans who come away from the draft angry that he didn't take the guy they thought we needed most. Fortunately, they're not in charge. I fully expect Phil & Co. to take the best guy they think we need most.

We don't know right now who will be available as a free agent QB next season, or who will be on the trading block. I can only hope that Phil has his plans in place and knows a hell of a lot more than we do.

I am also not sold on getting Thomas with our third pick. I still want to see us trade down and add some extra picks, as we still have many holes to fill.

I've told yall what the Browns should do:

invest rounds 5-7 on o-line sleepers... its as simple as that! thats 3 new young offensive linemen that can grow together, gel together, win together.

well since u asked

1) Adrian Peterson
2) Quentin Moses
3) Ryan McBean
4) Jay Alford

improved running game... young help on the defensive line... and 5-7 are offensive line prospects that could either help and become starters, or become reliable backups.

I want us to get as many picks as possible. I want to trade down as well.

But whats best for the team in the short and long term?

Tucker is at the end of his career. Like stated earlier...what if he relapses again this year? Even if he doesn't relapse. What about the 2008 season. Who will start then? Another expensive, average Free Agent Right Tackle? We have no depth on the Oline. Shaffer is average at best as a LT. He's more of a run blocker. He would be a good RT. Stein is the best OG this team has had in a long time. Fraley is more than an average Center. He's no Bentley, but he's still got game. Who else do we have? Druzzi? At this point in his career he's better suited as a backup swing man. Butler, Sowells.....backups, and nothing else.

We need Joe Thomas. We have to have him. Otherwise, it doesn't matter if Brady Quinn or Adrian Peterson are drafted. They won't be able to do anything.

The thought of a line like this:
Thomas - Steinbach - Fraley - Tucker - Shaffer
Excites me more than any other oline option we have.
That Oline makes me more exited than Peterson or Quinn on our Roster.
I'd still like to draft a round 2 OG. But it won't happen. We need DL help.

Draft Thomas. End of discussion.

....of course this arguement is a moot point if Detroit drafts Thomas. Which I don't believe they will.

No. Hutch WAS the highest paid guard until we signed Steinbach. And then Dallas trumped that when they signed Leonard Davis for a 7year 49.5 mil deal. LOL!! Jerry Jones had a bowl of Dummy-Os for breakfast that morning.

Don't encourage him!

Schaffer is servicable at LT, or we could draft a LT later in the 1st or second round if we trade down. Don't forget about the D-line as well. It's just as bad or worse than the O-line.

I dont think we'll draft a CB on the first day...at least I dont think it's a guarantee...
Savage is a good evaluator of the secondary, I expect him to shoot for a later round CB prospect who slipped...similar to Minter last year.

Also, I wouldnt rule out Rod Hood, yet.

The center touches the ball on every play also

So does the Ref.... Maybe we should draft a Franchise Ref.

hopefully OL DL CB and another DL (not necessarily in any particular order)
we need just as much help if not more now on the defensive side of the ball
