I looked and didn't see this posted. hope I didn't just miss it

Is LeBron James taking his talents to the NFL?

Clearly looking for things to do as the NBA lockout drags on, the Miami Heat forward practiced in full pads with the Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary varsity football team on Tuesday, according to the Chicago Tribune. James attended the Ohio high school, graduating in 2003 before embarking on a hugely successful NBA career.

LeBron James has the tools to be a successful NFL player. It's unlikely we'll ever find out, however. (Associated Press)

James borrowed the equipment and jersey of injured player Clayton Uecker, who at 6-foot-5, was the closest size match to the 6-foot-8, 250-pound James. As you might imagine, James was a man amongst boys on the field, catching every pass thrown his way. There was a strict no-tackle policy in place for the two-time MVP, but there was still contact.

"Our defensive backs were allowed to jam him at the line of scrimmage," running back Sae'Von Fitzgerald said. "But he took no contact after that. Coach (Dan Borman) said we shouldn't tackle him."

(That thud you just heard was Heat president Pat Riley fainting.)

We can only imagine how difficult it must have been for a bunch of high school kids to practice with their minds blown out the back of their helmets.

"I not gonna lie, it was pretty cool to see him out there," said starting quarterback Kevin Besser.

James took to his Twitter page afterward.

"Just got done practicing with the St.V Varsity football team, full pads and all," he tweeted. "Felt great being back on the field. Should I?"

We have little doubt that, given his freakish athletic gifts, James could develop into an elite NFL tight end. As long as there isn't a bloated hour-long special to announce it, we'd be all for the LeBron experience coming to the NFL. What else is he going to do?

I don't think so. Although, I would absolutely LOVE to see him lined up at tight end in the nfl and have to block. Or cut across the middle and extend for a pass while a linebacker waits.

There would definitely be a lot of LB's looking to give him a welcome to the NFL hit.

What does Michael Jordan's subpar baseball career have to do with a guy who was one of the most highly-scouted players in the country as a high school sophomore and junior? LeBron was a proven football talent and could've played for any college in the country had he wanted to, undoubtedly en route to an NFL career. Pro basketball happened to be more immediately accessible, far more lucrative, and less likely to leave him crippled 20 years down the road.

J/C...

This whole idea is a pipe dream of immense proportions - and I absolutely hate LeBron James - but if their was a supplemental draft tomorrow and he became a Cleveland Brown it would be about the greatest thing ever sports wise and I'd take him back in a NY minute.

And for anyone who thinks he couldn't play in the NFL, I'm not positive, but I'm preeeety sure he could be an improvement over an Alex Smith, or Robiskie, or Young, or pretty much anyone on defense outside of our DT's.

I know we all have a bias against the guy, but what part of a strong 6'8 250 frame that runs a 4.4 and has athleticism coming out his ears does not lead you to believe he would be a dominant NFL player?

Actually, I don't really hate him or anything. he did what he felt he had to do when he left cleveland. it was within his rights to do so. I didn't care for the way he did it, but thats a different story.

As for if I'd like to see him in the NFL.. ahh,, I honestly couldn't care less,

He has that on the basketball court, as well, and you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who wouldn't call him a dominant NBA player.

A "dominant nfl player"?????? Please. He'd get his ass handed to him on the first play. He hasn't played football since he was...what, a high school jr.? He'd have gator arms the likes of which we haven't seen in the nfl. He'd be bumped and bruised in training camp. He'd never see the field of play - not when it counts.

Take his "athleticism" and shove it. The dude isn't going to, and couldn't be able to, play football at a competitive level. Here's a clue - just cause you are tall means nothing. His quickness does NOT rival that of other nfl players. His speed - as I've said of every player in the nfl - is over rated. His weight? Big deal. Dude wouldn't be able to block any better than Winslow - and that's saying something bad.

Sure, he's got speed. So do the guys that would be covering him. Sure, he has size. And at 6'8", he wouldn't be able to get leverage blocking.. And, on a side note - he's not tough enough to play football. He'd have his ass handed to him in a heartbeat. He wouldn't get the "superstar" calls he gets in basketball.

I don't think you'd be hard pressed to find people in the know that don't consider him a dominant nba player. Look at his resume - it's as much hype as it is fact.

Sure, he scores alot of points. Sometimes. But he gets sissified most of the time when faced with adversity. He relies way too much on the "do you know who I am?" thing - and not near enough on the "I don't care what you think of me, I'm taking your team down" thing.

He's a good guy to back up a star in basketball. I don't think he'd last a week in football. He ain't all that and a bag of chips. He's hype. And it works for him, as he's gotten paid quite well for doing not much.

You're right. There are no players in the 6'6" to 6'10" range that earn their NFL paychecks by blocking. Especially not left tackles and tight ends.

Lebron James could be a superstar in the NFL as a TE.

Would he be a great blocker? Probably not. Could he chip block? I think so.

He would be a nightmare for LB to try and cover in the seam. He would be bigger than every Safety and CB he would face, and would be as fast, or faster than most. He would be as big as many LB, and much faster. He also has plus strength.

Think of taking Greg Little, giving him elite speed, making him bigger, and moving him to TE. Scary. Evan Moore can make a solid living as a receiving TE with limited routes and even more limited blocking ability. James could be Evan Moore with bigger hands, elite leaping ability, and elite sped.

Much as it would turn my stomach, I would give him a shot.

I was just referring to the comments you made in the previous post. It sounded like you didn't watch too much basketball. You said ...

Quote:

Look at his resume - it's as much hype as it is fact.

OK, let's take a look.

Rookie Of The Year. Joins Oscar Robertson and MJ as only rookies to average 20-5-5.

Two-time MVP.

All-NBA and All-Star selections every single year he's played

Scoring average ranks by season 2, 2, 2, 1, 4, 3, 3

Is that enough fact, or should I keep going? Should I list his assist average ranks? His steal average ranks?

Now, as for football...

Quote:

And at 6'8", he wouldn't be able to get leverage blocking..

Jared Gaither, Bryant McKinnie, Jeremy Trueblood ... those are just 6'8 guys off the top of my head whose sole purpose on the field is to block. If you want to go down a couple inches, you'll find many more.

Seriously, where did you come up with this?

Quote:

His quickness does NOT rival that of other nfl players

Actually, yeah, it does.

He is incredibly quick, especially considering his frame.

Quote:

And, on a side note - he's not tough enough to play football

Based on what?

The guy has made a career on driving into the lane aggressively. Certainly football is a much more physical sport, but what evidence is there to suggest that he's not tough enough to play wideout? He has the size, the speed, and shown that he can be physically aggressive without major injury peril.

Quote:

Take his "athleticism" and shove it.

Ah, OK.

Good to know 'athleticism' doesn't matter in the NFL.

Quote:

just cause you are tall means nothing. His speed - as I've said of every player in the nfl - is over rated. His weight? Big deal.

So now athleticism, size and speed don't matter?

I hate LeBron for how he left as much as the next guy, but I do think he could play tight end rather well.

Tony Gonzalez dabbles in basketball a bit and did just fine over his career. LeBron may not be a Tony Gonzalez in the nfl ( just like Tony isn't a LeBron in basketball), but I wouldn't mind someone of his size and leaping ability as a red zone target.

I disagree with your assessment arch. He is an ELITE athlete. He has superior quickness for his size. What about HANDS? Blocking is all about technique and proper use of hands.

As for how basketball translates to football? ask Gates. GM's are always looking for players that were good in basketball. I completely disagree with you.

A lot of you guys are just haters. I'd like to see it just out of curiosity. It would be interesting seeing what he would do as a wideout (yes, not a TE) or as a DE.

Obviously, he's played football before, but can you imagine an NBA player pleading for a PI call? Especially an NBA star? That by itself would be worth it.

You're missing my point. I understand that there is obviously huge leaps to make at every level, but the fact that he was so highly recruited tells me that legit college programs felt he could play at college football's highest level. I'm surmising from there that he would've had a successful college career and would've likely been drafted into the NFL.

He has been away from organized football for ten years, but it's not like he's spent those years getting pudgy while pushing paper at a desk job. He's a 26-year-old elite, world-class athlete in the peak of his physical prime. Sure, there'd be some rust to shake off, but elite athletes are elite athletes and tend to excel in multiple disciplines.

naw, he can score points. he just can only play for 3 quarters. wait, that's 3 NBA quarters (36min). So, in the NFL we'll have to bench him 6 minutes into the 3rd.
