So through the bye we sit at 2-2. Probably not much different then what most of us expected. Cincy and Tennessee look stronger then most thought, and Indy and Miami look weaker then expected.
The next 7 games will tell the story of the 2011 Cleveland Browns.
In that stretch we have Oakland, Seattle, San Fran,Houston,St Louis Jacksonville, and Cincy again.
From my vantage point we need to win 6 of the 7 games heading in to the games against Pittburgh and Baltimore with Arizona sandwiched in between.
The key is how the team responds as we exit the bye week.
Hopefully the bye gives the staff the added time to figure out exactly how we are going to attack the rest of the season.
Hopefully, as Colt nears a full seasons worth of games, things start to slow down for him. New system or not, the speed of the game isn't predicated on the system you run, but as he continues in this system, it should get easier for the kid.
In that stretch we have Oakland, SanFran, Houston, and Cincy on the road.
Houston will be a tough game, and while Cincy will be tough, we have to win that to even up the division record.
Though it is 7 games, we have to take them one game at a time. First stop, Oakland.
Here's to seeing good football the next 7 games!!
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

If we did win 6 of the next 7 games, we'd be 8 and 3 going into the home stretch.
Before the season began, most on here (me included) thought we'd win maybe 5 to 7 games all year and most considered that to be move forward given all the circumstances.
I don't see us winning 6 games the rest of the season. And that would put us at 8-8.
Honestly, it would be wonderful to win 6 of the next 7., But I seriously doubt it.

It's Official... "Suck 4 Luck"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!... Peener...Being realistic here we could possibly be sitting 1-3 right now...We lost 2 a Cincy team rolling out a ROOK QB...For any team that's even close to average...And we're NOT... that's inexcusable... And Miami was a LOSS waiting to happen to this young team...After the TD and the Celebration Penalty...Then the horse collar...It's AMAZING Miami couldn't get 10 yards and kick the winner...WE GOT "LUCKY"... You guys need to understand that EVERYTHING is stacked against us... 1st year starting QB 1st year HC New OC New DC 3 new OL 3 new DL New FS That right there's enuff to make it real hard to win even TWO games all season...And we've been "LUCKY" as hell with no key injuries to any starter where we have amatuer depth...But it's GONNA happen... I see us sneeking 2 improbable W's the rest of the way...And I see why... 4-12 gets us in the "Suck 4 Luck" sweepstakes...
Go Browns!!!

I could honestly see us losing 6 of the next 7 games while limping into a brutal December schedule.
Hopefully they used the bye week to their advantage and come out ready to play against an emotional Oakland team next week.

This 4 game stretch coming up with 3 of 4 on the road is HUGE.
@ Oakland is always tough but it is really gonna be rough with their first home game since the passing of Al Davis.
@49ers another trip cross country against a 3-1 team.
@ Houston and Houston is playing as good as anyone
I like the fact that we will have had 2 weeks to prepare for Oakland. With one trip out west under our belt it will make the 49ers and Texans trip a bit easier.
@ cinn will be the typical split game in the rivalry Jags, Seahawks and Rams games we should win.
To have a chance for playoffs We will need 6 or 7 wins when we play the Ravens when we start the final 5 stretch.
Win next week and we take a huge step towards a fruitful season. It is a monster game no other way to look at it.

Mack is OUT from that apendectomy...I highly doubt he will be in Oakland...
Haden is OUT with that sprained knee...How long??? Shurmer said he will "Miss some time"...
2 BIG blows already...
Campbell will eat us up and they will run all over us...

Mack will play unless he shares the same agent with Hillis lol
We dont play anyone with a good receiver until Houston and not sure when Johnson will be back. Not reallly worried aobut our DB situation right now even with Brown and Haden banged up.

Winning 6 of the next 7 is a bit unrealistic even if you consider it must be done.
I'm going to mirror something Grossi said in the video that was posted in another thread. With no off-season it slowed down Shurmur's evaluation of the players. As he's said, each week he gets a better idea of what each guy can and can not do. That should have been accomplished in the off-season for the most part.
Well, now that they've been through training camp and 4 regular season games it's very much like an off-season and a training camp heading into the opening game. So for the Oakland game it can almost be considered the opening game after the usual time to prepare the team. [/Grossi]
So in that light, the reason I have strongly considered as an issue in the preparation of the team, mainly the lack of an off-season, is no longer valid. They've had their time to evaluate and plan so now it's game on.
With that in mind, it's awfully hard for me to see this team starting out after the bye winning 6 of 7. If that were the case, (and we had a full off-season), the worst we could be right now is 3-1 and then win the next 3 games in a row. Somehow I don't think anyone expected a start like that, even with a full off-season, regardless how optimistic they may have been.
If you're figuring us to lose the final 5 games and feel we need to have 8 wins before that happens so we can finish 8-8 then you're right in where we have to be. But to expect us to reel-off 6 of 7 is unrealistic in my opinion. I hope for it too but doubt very much it can happen.
In contrast, my expectation is that we win 2-3, (prayerfully even 4), of the next 7 and have the offense getting onto a rhythm and starting to click. I certainly don't expect a non-losing record, (ala 8-8), or better, but hope to see a team on the rise on both sides of the ball. It would be great to snatch one of the Rat's or Steelers games but nearly equally as well to play relatively close and not get embarrassed in any of those 4 games.
I really don't want to go into the next off-season with as many questions as we went into the last one. I would consider this season a failure if that were to happen.

I agree. With an off-season's worth of watching film on his players plus 10 weeks now of time working with them, the excuse of "no offseason" has about run its course. Shurmur should at this point have a pretty good idea of what he is going to get out of the players on his roster.
I see some people in this thread talking about what we need to do to make the playoffs. To put things in perspective, it's going to take 10 wins minimum to consider a playoff berth. In other words, we must go 8-4 over the next 12 games in order to even be in the picture. Has this team shown anything that indicates that they're capable of such a run? I don't think they have, but that's JMHO.

I don't buy the whole "You need 8 or 9 weeks to know what you have" argument. The reason why? Because the owners themselves are trying to shorten the preseason. The union has shortened the off-season. Those are the 2 groups who should have a pretty good idea of what will work and what won't. (except for coaches, and I'm sure that they'd like weekly camps all year round) The Browns reported on July 29th. That means that they have had 10 weeks of work so far. It will be 11 by the time they play another game. A quality coaching staff should be able to have some idea of who can do what by now. Plus, we kept Gary Brown, who coaches the running backs. We kept TE coach Steve Hagan. We kept OL coach George Warhop. There damn sure should be some familiarity between these coaches and the players. Further, the Browns kept these guys, in part, to help Shurmur transition to the Browns. These guys should have been able to give Shurmur tremendous amounts of information as far as each guy they coach, and their strengths and weaknesses. There were no wholesale changes on offense. Most of the offensive personnel is the same as last year. The WRs and TEs are the same, except that we swapped out Stuckey for Little and Norwood. The TEs are exactly the same. The OL is largely the same. The only guy starting on the OL that wasn't here last year is Pinkston. We have Hillis. The FB has changed, but we don't use the FB all that much anyway. The team has tape on McCoy, and also got him a playbook. I am sure that they had something to do with him getting together with Favre. It wasn't like he (or the rest of the offense) walked in on day 1 and had to start learning a new language. The main players on offense had a playbook to work from, and got some good work that probably was somewhat close (though not exactly) what they would have done in an off-season camp. Further, the team has the same GM and President as they did last year .... and those guys are joined at the hip. This is not necessarily a bad thing .... but Heckert and Holmgren both had an idea of who fits and who doesn't before Shurmur ever eyeballed a player. Even more, the GM started looking for players (like Mitchell) who didn't even fit our old coach's system before he was fired. I know that it's hard to have a new coach come in on a shortened timeframe and turn things around, but Shurmur really did have quite a few advantages that many other new head coaches do not get ...... shortened preseason or not.

Believe it or not 8-4 is possible if a light switch comes on for McCoy.
I would love to see McCoy just start chucking it - even if it resulted in picks and losses. He doesn't have any confidence in his arm. The only way to get it is to test it.
If the light switch isn't going to come on I'd just assume lose out and draft a QB.
So for me I don't care about wins and losses unless McCoy catches fire.
I got to tell you it's pretty disappointing to see Dalton playing pretty decent making good throws and developing chemistry with Green. I didn't realize Green was such a punk though. I haven't seen a player that in love with himself since TO.
But back on track. I want that for the Browns. Feels like we've been waiting forever and we will continue to do so.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

Added to that, its not exactly as if this lockout and the resulting shortened offseason snuck up on Holmgren and Heckert.

I don't care about our W/L record nearly as much as I do about how the team looks either. The people that are talking playoffs obviously do, though, because it takes a certain number of wins to make the playoffs. I want to see this team look competent on the offensive side of the ball...something that thus far its largely failed to do.

For Example Last Year...
To start the season losing the way we did, I just wanted to look like a respectable team going forward...
Then we beat No, and NE, and we're about to beat NYJ... Suddenly it's "Hey, we could make it"
Then we went on to lose to the Jags the way we did... and everything went back to normal...
Until we're mathmatically out, I'll always hold out hope...
But I'd rather build a solid team first, than try and be say, whatever the Cheifs were/are last/this season...

If our defense plays like it did against Indy, and our offense stops playing in spurts, we have a very "winnable" schedule based on the teams we are playing...
Hence why people are so optimistic...

Methinks people are optimistic because people tend to be Homeristic.
Talent always tells the tale in the NFL. Teams with less talent can win the occasional game against a better opponent, but over the course of a season, inferior teams win less games. We don't have average NFL talent, and thus we won't win as many games as the average team.
With an inferior line and inferior QB play, we're going to have an inferior offense. With a defense void of difference-makers, we're going to continue to live and die by the blitz, which is the only way we consistently get to the QB.
The best we can hope for is to stay in these games late and pull one out at the end. Play bend-but-don't break defense, and hope to run and dink-and-dunk the ball down the field. We just aren't capable of more than that over the course of the season.

Yeah, but if you're not optimistic, and don't think the best about this team going forward... Well then you might as well go root for someone else... ...At least that's what I was told last week...

The optimism versus realism versus pessimism debate always fascinates me, especially when Homerism comes into play.....

You should get off the OL.
You know better than that. We've seen inferior line play in Cleveland before. This is nowhere close. Do we need an upgrade at RT? Yeah that would be nice. But the line is good enough to win with. I would think someone like you who appears to understand the game would know that. You do realize it's almost impossible to have a pro bowler at every position right? Get your head outta your butt and get off the line. No matter how many times you say it won't make it true. And do not respond with "their own cross to bear". You are banned from using the term "cross to bear" forever. I'm tired of hearing that.
This is the most talented team we've had in a long time. The problems are twofold. Inexperience with the players and coaching staff. And inferior QB play.

Outside of Mack and Thomas, the other three positions have played poorly. I don't see a line that's good enough to win with.
As for being the most talented team we've had in a long time, we sure aren't the most talented in terms of offensive line or QB. Without those you don't have an offense, and without an offense you don't have a winner.

Exactly. That's what I said in my post.
Next game is Oct 16. But go back to the opening game of Sept.11 and that's a long way back. They couldn't have been then any where near where they are now in player evaluations and preparations in these schemes.
However, at this point forward it's a non-issue other than throughout the season we'll be a month behind. You simply don't make up time lost. (If you figure out how to do that let me know. At my/our age I/we could use getting some of that time back.)

Those are reports and good for what they are. Same goes for film. But the Head Coach, who is also the Offensive Coordinator would like to see for himself what these guys can do in his scheme. That's not too much for a coach to hope for nor too much for him to require.
Quote:
There were no wholesale changes on offense. Most of the offensive personnel is the same as last year.
Not so much in the players but certainly wholesale changes on offensive scheme. Wholesale changes. Players being asked to do things they haven't done before scheme-wise, read-wise, terminology-wise and learning what the personality of a new coach expects from them.
Quote:
The main players on offense had a playbook to work from, and got some good work that probably was somewhat close (though not exactly) what they would have done in an off-season camp.
Not only "not exactly" but actually no where near close. Players farting around on their own can give them a jump start of sorts. But we've all read reports from former players saying it doesn't accomplish much other than camaraderie between players. It's a good thing but it's no where near like being coached in the system. It was only 4 days and it was overseen by players who needed coached themselves.
Even today in the Steelers/Titans game Dierdorf was explaining how the lack of an offseason effected the Titans, (who weren't doing very well), in their offensive reads and timing between Hassleback and his WR's and TE's. That they're no where near hitting their stride which will take some time. Like he said, every newly coached team suffered a set-back due to no off-season. Most can see that. It only makes the most common sense.
Quote:

Does nothing for the coach in seeing how his players play this offense on the field. It's simply another report. A somewhat good one but even they had no real input on any of the rookies, (who are playing now), or even second and third year guys who haven't played in this offense. Although Holmgren and Heckert were there, Shurmur was not.
Quote:
I know that it's hard to have a new coach come in on a shortened timeframe and turn things around, but Shurmur really did have quite a few advantages that many other new head coaches do not get ...... shortened preseason or not.
You seem to minimize the adverse conditions and shortcomings going into this new season while at the same time maximizing the minimum amount of non-coached work the players did on their own and the reports from the FO, previous coaches as well as film study.
The only thing Shurmur had is some returning assistant coaches. While that's a bit of an advantage, where that advantage comes into play is once the players are on the practice field.
I don't know any job, even one where the only change was the boss, that the boss wouldn't start out slowly as he learned what he had to work with regardless of how much information he was fed by others. He just has to see for himself to know.
You make it sound so easy that nearly anyone could do it because, after all, it's only NFL Professional Football and preparation is overrated.
Honestly, that's how you sound to me.
While I agree with Shurmur that the whole argument is a moot point because from day one he had to produce starting from where he started and what he had to work with. Any thinking about the lack of a preseason would simply be wasted time when there is a job at hand that needs the focus.
But for those of us who aren't responsible to produce it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that the lack of off-season preparation is a stumbling block right out of the gate.
And it's not a insignificant one.

And yet, that Titans team was tied for first in its division at 3-1, including a sound beating of a top-5 team and an absolute thrashing of our own awful team.

The lack of OTA's hurt our team more than most. As much as I bag on McCoy, the off-season did play a role in that. Yet because of that fact, it now means McCoy should take bigger leaps in improvement over the next month or two.

With an experienced QB of many years and playoff games and a superbowl appearance and a defense who didn't change schemes overnight and a very good OL.

Of course we won't be in the running for Luck... We aren't that lucky...
Browns are bad because they trade away their top ten picks to stack up guys and bodies that don't give you the talent to win ... we will have 15-30 1st round picks all day long.. and extra stuff we blow on crap...
Sorry to be a downer... I'm just tired of losing. Best season we've had since I have been a fan was the DA 10-6 season

So an over-the-hill quarterback on a new team in a new system with a new rookie head coach (with no experience even as a coordinator) and a running back who held out the entire offseason for a new contract doesn't matter at all because he's been around the block? The best team they've played is the Ravens, and they beat them. The best team we've played is the Titans, and they wiped up the locker room floor with us. Must be that 20 yards/per game difference our defense is giving up...
If the Titans are playing terribly out of sync then they'll be Super Bowl bound when they get it together.

I'd say in rebuttal that the only reason we keep trading down is because we keep wasting our 1st round picks, not because we didn't take the talent which was on the board when we were picking.
That's reflected in the number of regime changes we've had in the last decade...
