What I don't get is the people who will rush out to buy this new version mid-contract and pay non-contract price, just to have it, particularly the ones that already have an iPhone4

No doubt.

I'm in mid contract and Sprint is showing me the 16 GB version for 649.99 lol. The 64 GB version is 849.99.

Overpriced just like their computers.

I was in mid contract when the iPhone 4 came out and AT&T said I was eligible for an upgrade. I can't speak for Verizon but I would assume they would match AT&T's policy.

It's time for my upgrade with Sprint....not so sure I want to spend $200 on an iphone. Is it really worth it?

I think it is, but everyone has an opinion. Check with Sprint and see if they have a trial period if you are thinking about one.

I guess I just need to find out what's so great over Android.

Nothing anymore iMO. The Droid Bionic is as responsive as an iPhone plus I can copy to and from it without using the crappy iTunes interface, it can play Flash without some silly "flash" browser, I can change the battery, it is 4G, bigger screen, hdmi output, USB and micro SD capabilities. I'll stick with Android instead of a locked down device. Apple makes some nice products but they are too locked down for my tastes. Makes it easier for them to develop stable products but I just don't care for how much is left off of the device as compared to Android.

I can't help there. I've only had one smart phone an it's and iPhone 3G. I don't want to switch because I've bought many apps/songs/books that I don't want to have to rebuy. I am used to the layout and function of the apple system and I already have my iTunes set up and would not want to start over with some other program/software.

I'm not an iFanboy so I'm not going to say "zomg Android sucks Apple rules" or anything like that. From what I've experienced the iPhone is a quality built machine and the software is top notch as well.

I've used both, and the iPhone is a very responsive, smooth interface. But as Columbus pointed out, the benefits of it aren't enough for me to give up the advantages I get from my Android phone. So it depends on what you use your phone for, what your personal preferences are, and if your interested in trying something different.

Both are great phones and have good options.

One difference is with the iPhone you know what you are getting regardless of where you get it. With Android, each model can be a little different and the end experience therefore can vary.

If I were to get the iPhone 4S, with my 2 year upgrade price, plus my $100 credit, I would get the phone for $99.

Let's say you shot 1 round for every point the Browns score all year, you're on pace to shoot about 260 rounds this year.

I don't know what kind of gun you're using, but let me just say you spend $50 for 100 rounds. You're spending about $130 this year on ammo.

To literally just shoot into the air because the Browns scored.

And you find it "comical" that people "waste their money" on a phone?

For you and daman - have at it. We can all spend our money as we see fit.

Although I didn't say it - my whole point was "how often do they come out with a new phone"......and people go gaga over it. It seems like every year, or less. I've heard rumors an iphone 5 will be out by the beginning of summer. - and people will go gaga over it.

As to your other point (hopefully you're wrong on the number of points the Browns score this year - but your guess if probably pretty accurate at about 16 pts. per game)

12 gauge. Shells are 21 cents per piece. If it's a good game (meaning the Browns are in it), I'll fire'em off. If it's a lopsided loss - I don't shoot. Field goals generally get 1 shot - unless it's a game winner, or close to it (if that makes sense). TD's get 2 to 5, depending.

260 pts. Let's say they're all td's. That's basically 37 td's. 37 X 4 (average) = 148 shells. 148 X 21 cents = $31.

As for the phone - if you, or anyone, is due for an upgrade - great. I have a feeling that 50% or more of the people that are getting these phones are NOT due for an upgrade. No proof of that, though.

edit to add this: I don't believe I said it was comical. I believe I said "it does interest me how people throw their money away." And, with the 5 coming out in 9 mths to a year, many of these people will be clamoring for THAT one.

All this excitement for a phone that, according to people on here - doesn't do much more than the one it "replaces".

As for "how often do they come out with a new phone?"...how do you think people who bought the iPhone 3GS paid for the iPhone 4? They sold the 3GS, usually for more than they paid for it. How do you think people are paying for their new iPhone 4Ss today? They're selling their iPhone 4s.

First and foremost you did comment on how people thorw thier money away and you did indeed call it comical.

A little revisionism to say you didn't.

Just Clicking

Got my Iphone 4S yesterday.. was a little more difficult to set up than the 3g but got it done..

WOW,, a bizillion times faster.. Better graphics (crisper), better speakerphone, better picture quality, the video feature is amazing.

Haven't figured out how to use Siri yet.. I'll work on that later. But without a doubt,,, a much better phone than the 3..

I guess if you want to settle for less....just sayin' all these phone companies calling it 4G is simply not true....it is High end 3G speeds...not 4th generation speeds for sure.

I would make one change to that sign.

Mine would say:

Pay attention while walking,

Or your next Facebook update may be "Dead".

Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

AT&T's website even shows the 4S is a 4G phone.

I don't know what else I need to do besides blow it up to the size of a billboard to show you that the 4S is a 4G phone.

That's a misprint...look at the photo of the 4S itself. It shows the 4G icon at the top.

Hell that even shows it on ALL the 4G phones: http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-s...bid=ZaWF9jylvuX

The iPhone 4S incorporates 14.4Mbps HSPA+ cellular technology, which AT&T calls 4G. The International Telecommunications Union (ITU), however, does not officially recognize HSPA+ as 4G, contrary to many tech-press reports. In fact, the ITU doesn't even recognize LTE or Mobile WiMAX as official 4G technologies. The ITU considers all three technologies as "advanced 3G." Nonetheless, the ITU acknowledges that many carriers are marketing three technologies as 4G.

Here's how an ITU spokesperson explained it to me in an email:

The term ‘4G’ remains undefined. We are aware that the term is being used by some operators to describe LTE, Mobile WiMAX and HSPA+, which are in fact considered to be evolved 3G technologies that provide a substantial level of improvement in performance and capabilities with respect to the initial third generation systems now deployed.

Over the last 25 years, ITU has developed the IMT framework of standards — or International Mobile Telecommunication system — for mobile telephony and continues to lead international efforts involving governments and industry players to produce the next generation standards for global mobile communications.

Since 2000, IMT-2000 has been widely deployed and referred to as 3G. ITU has announced the next-generation of standards for global wireless broadband communications, known as IMT-Advanced. Following a detailed evaluation against stringent technical and operational criteria, ITU has determined that "LTE-Advanced" and "WirelessMAN-Advanced" should be accorded the official designation of IMT-Advanced. The detailed specifications of IMT-Advanced technologies will be provided in a new ITU-R Recommendation, or standard, expected in early 2012.

For research purposes, the target transmission rates for IMT-Advanced was set at 100 Mbit/s when used in a high mobility environment (e.g. driving in a car) and 1 Gbit/s in a stationary environment.

In a second email, the spokeseprson said this:

Since “ 4G” is so far undefined, we are not using this term. It is however clear that IMT-Advanced is the next generation mobile technology, up from IMT-2000 which was referred to as “3G”.
As for LTE, mobile WiMAX, and HSPA+, yes, they are considered to be evolved 3G technologies.

But you said you "work with this stuff everyday" which insinuates you are in the mobile broadband work-field. Not that you just know how to read mobile carrier websites.

Maybe you didn't read what i wrote in a previous thread.

Nobody has REAL 4G network....it's just little faster than 3G and they want to call it a 4G. 4th generation speeds would be WAY faster than HSPA+ and HSPA networks. Verizon has the closest thing to 4G

We are not saying they aren't advertising 4G...we are syaing it is NOT true 4G even if they are advertising.

Now we're arguing semantics.

Of the current 4G networks out there, they're all about in the 5-12 Mbps range of speed. AT&T's 4G network hits that speed threshold. The 4S supports those speeds (I got 6.8 Mbps last night when I tested it).

It is a 4G phone. I don't understand why we have to argue this.

I get 14.9 down and 6.5 up on my Droid Bionic when on LTE in Columbus.

As stated, there is no true 4G but Verizon is the closest.

And I'm loving Siri.. it takes a little while for it to learn your speech patterns... then it's very cool...

J/C...

I read last night that Motorola is bringing back the RAZR name as a smartphone... I'm very interested in that.

I had a RAZR2 and have had the same RAZR MAXX for over 4 years holding off for the right phone to upgrade to - I think I may have found the one.

Motorola unveils Droid Razr, world's thinnest smartphone
By Andrew Couts | Digital Trends – Tue, Oct 18, 2011

At a press event in New York City today, Motorola officially announced the new 7.1mm-thick Droid Razr, which the handset-maker says is the thinnest smartphone available anywhere in the world. The company also unveiled the fitness-centric MotoActv, a music player and workout monitoring device that aims to compete with Apple’s iPod nano.

Droid Razr

With a thickness of just 7.1mm, the super-thin Droid Razr — available later this year exclusively through Verizon — packs a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 1GB of RAM and a 4.3-inch super AMOLED advanced qHD display, which is protected by durable Gorilla Glass. Encased in Kevlar fiber, stainless steel and a water-resistant splashguard, the 4G LTE-capable Droid Razr is powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread mobile operating system, which has an overlay of Motorola’s Ninjablur user interface.

The Droid Razr’s 8-megapixel rear-facing camera can shoot full-high-definition 1080p video. The device has the ability to download full-HD movies from Netflix, the company said, and can port video out via HDMI. Included with the Droid Razr is 16GB of internal storage, plus a 16GB microSD card.

Motorola claims 12.5 hours of talk time and 8.9 hours of video playback thanks to the Droid Razr’s 1800mAh battery and the help of software optimization and task-automation functionality, called “Smart Actions,” the use of which Motorola says can increase battery life by up to 30 percent.

Extras for the Droid Razr include Motorola’s MotoCast app, that enables users to stream music, video and photos from their PC to their Droid Razr. Also included in the accessory lineup are a 14-inch and a 10-inch laptop dock, an HD dock, a gesture touchpad, powerpack and wireless keyboard.

Pre-orers for the Droid Razr begin on Oct. 27, and the device will be available in-store “early November.” The Droid Razr will cost $299 with the signing of a new two-year Verizon contract.

MotoActv

Measuring 46mm by 46 mm and weighing a mere 35 grams, the MotoActv allows users to better keep up with their workout regimen. Built-in GPS allows the MotoActv to track users walking, running and cycling rates and distances, calorie burn rate and wirelessly monitor heart rates. And a voice feed lets users know how their workout is going.

To help users pick up the pace, the MotoActv automatically analyzes songs in its library to determine which tracks get users’ motivated, then plays those songs. Wireless headphones come standard. And Wi-Fi connectivity allows users to automatically sync workout data with their PC.

The wearable MotoActv will be available starting November 6: 8GB model for $249, 16GB for $299.

Check back with DT later today for hands-on impressions of the Droid Razr and MotoActv.

I don't understand why we have to argue this.

probably because you're wrong. it's a marketing ploy and you fell for it.

AT&T asked Apple to designate the iPhone 4S as “4G,” aligning the device with its marketing strategy and hoping to gain ground against rivals Verizon and Sprint.

According to a leaked internal memo, AT&T asked Apple to change the iPhone 4S status bar to show “4G” near the signal indicator when it’s on the HSPA-plus network.

AT&T aims with the request to differentiate itself from rival iPhone 4S carriers Verizon and Sprint, who are also carrying Apple’s latest handset, and possibly advertise itself as the only network that offers 4G speeds on iPhone. If accepted, the change will be made once Apple releases the new iOS.

AT&T’s HSPA-plus network is technically 3.5G, not 4G, but the carrier does allow devices to download at speeds fast enough to be classified as 4G. By labeling its version of the iPhone as 4G, AT&T hopes to differentiate their iPhone in the minds of customers.

AT&T is also moving ahead with the launch of a 4G network that uses LTE technology and plans to release its first LTE phone and reach more than a dozen markets by the end of the year.

Verizon is the current LTE leader with a network that spans more than half the country, and Sprint recently announced plans to launch LTE next year.

With 4G branding, AT&T makes clear its strategy to position itself as having the fastest iPhone, but it also may risk confusing customers as it launches devices that are “true” 4G in coming weeks.

Apple won’t likely comply with AT&T’s request. During the iPhone 4S event, Apple’s Phil Schiller sidestepped the 4G discussion.

By advertising 4G speed, AT&T attempts to position itself to sell more iPhones than competing carriers, but it also may add another element to the emerging 4G device market, risking more customer confusion at a time when the company heads into holiday sales and expands its own LTE launch.

I was in the Verizon shop today and saw the literature on these RAZR's . I mostly carry in my shirt pocket and that thin profile and lighter weight (than my Droid X) really fits the bill.

I don't know 4g from deer antlers LOL... all I know is that my phone is fast.. Very fast..

And I'm loving Siri.. it takes a little while for it to learn your speech patterns... then it's very cool...

Oh yeah, well mines faster! Just messin with ya.

I've been playing with Google Voice on my phone and have been very impressed. It's still in beta and not as refined as Siri but it works fantastic.

I guess you're right. All those kids in my son's middle school don't have a problem with the iPhone thickness.
