Much is made on this board of the relationship between the QB, the talent around them, the scheme, the strength of schedule etc. so I thought this would make for an interesting debate.

Alex Smith, who has been mediocre at best for 6 years, and has been written off pretty much every year as in his "make or break" season, is suddenly playing really well....

So what does everybody think is the reason? Does he suddenly have more talent around him? Has Harbaugh's system made all of the difference? Did a light just come on for him? Will he be the next DA to have a pro-bowl caliber season and then fade back to being sub-mediocre?

I'm curious what y'all think about his sudden rise in performance and whether or not it's sustainable.....

#1 BE has 4 receptions. Hell, Robo helps us more than that.
#2 SF has the 28th passing offense based on yards. That's hardly a glowing endorsement to Smith
#3 SF has the 12th best rushing offense....that's big
#4 SF has the 4th best rushing defense....another big one
#5 T.Ginn has 4 receptions too
#6 Vernon Davis is a monster
#7 It's not like they're 5-0 or 4-1....they're 3-2. After this weeks game against Detroit, they'll be 3-3. And I think we'll beat them the following week too.
#8 Frank Gore is back to being...well, Frank Gore. He only had 800+ something yards in 11 games last year. He has 400 with 3 TDs so far this season. Add in Kendall Hunter's 133 yards...that's nice.
#9 Alex Smith hasn't thrown many interceptions (because they run well, have played with a lead, run a more conservative offense or who knows?).
#10 The NFC West stinks (I know, they've only played one divisional opponent).

I'm not ready to say Alex Smith is finally good. He still has a long season left. We'll see what happens. As of now, he a good story off to a hot start, that's all.

He has 5 catches for 41 yards. I wouldn't go overboard with insane praise just yet.

The 49ers have the typical 1st year HC overachieve season going...some luck here and there and you get what you see...Smith is still Smith, as in...not good..he's a game manager only, he doesn't even AVG 200yds/game...they ride Gore and their D and try to limit his mistakes...HC is doing a good job

Haven't faced tough Ds too...Cincy was best and they struggled and won a crapfest

They look great but might come back down to earth ... or .500.

So far ... they have wins on a struggling Philly, a mediocre (struggling) Tampa Bay, a so-so Cincy, and Seattle. They also lost in OT to Dallas. None of those teams are on top, but I expect them to show their true colors soon.

Smith has been efficient by the way ... but that's about it. He's averaging 16 for 25 for 193 yards per game with 7 TDs and only 1 INT.

Obviously the TD and INT ratio is awesome ... and the 64% is also great ... but only 193 yards per game?

He seems like a VERY GOOD game manager against mediocre or underperforming teams so far.

We will know sometime in the next month or so how good they actualy are ... They still have to play Washington, NY Giants, Pittsburgh, Baltimore ... but their boat is like ours as well in that they have 5 of their last 7 games as division games so they can play decent football late and clean up the NFCWest teams.

Bottom line Smith is doing what they need to in order to win, but I don't think they are lights out or anything.

And having established, highly athletic guys that the defense has to decide who to key on is very helpful to a qb. I dont think Robo scares anybody when he lines up so idk that hes as much of a help to colt as BE is to Alex Smith. Opposing teams know that braylon can get it in the endzone so they have pay some attention to him and hes their 3rd or 4th option... so we see SF growing more comfortable in their ability to pick spots.

7:1 td/int ratio is a phenomenal compliment to their strong running
Im not ready to declare Alex Smith has arrived but its no shock to see him improve this year with that kinda talent lined up out there

you do realize that Braylon has only played in 2 of the 49ers 5 games and they lost one of those games, right?

3-0 w/o BE

Not trying to rehash any love for him here. Jus pointing out when THAT guy is yr 3rd or 4th option, yr qb cant help but be at least above average. Throw in teddy ginn as a 4th or 5th and a defense is liable to have fits figuring out what they wanna do. And a defense on its heels is like dominos about to fall.

I definitely see the 9ers in the playoffs especially with that ferocious defense and teddy trackstar returning kicks

at4-1 theyre playing great football.

They have been buoyed by the defense and solid running game. But in addition I think the system Harbaugh is running is keeping Alex Smith looking good. 7-1 TDs to INTs is good regardless of ur other averages, thats great. It puts him on pace for approximately 22 TDs and 4 INTs...which are Josh Freeman numbers and people loved his year last year.

I think its a combo of the light coming on a little bit, and improved OL and a solid system.

Singletary and his offenses were gross, and Nolan and whoeever else hes had as coach were not QBs or offensive guys at all. Hes finally getting coaching and is looking good because of it.

I know he's not putting up huge numbers but he is being extremely efficient in running the offense and doing what they are asking him to do...

That's why I put the DA reference in there because that seems to me to be the most plausible (though he is doing it more by being efficient than DA who did it by being flashy). He is getting a lot of help in other areas with Ginn running back 2 kicks in one game against Seattle, the Eagles missed 2 fourth quarter FGs under 40 yards to lose that game... He has receivers making big plays like DA did.. I just don't see it as being sustainable.

First of all, there's the sample size issue. In five games it's very difficult to get an accurate depiction of anyone statistically. When you consider the fact that these five games strongly contradict Alex Smith's previous five seasons, it stands to reason that this year is a fluke.

With that said, there is one other logical explanation. Quite simply, the 49ers are not relying on Smith at all. He is simply managing the game. San Fran's 32nd ranked 25.8 passing attempts per game supports this, as does their 29th ranked yards per game.

So while Smith has played well this year (and make no mistake, he has), he is not carrying the team. If he were being asked to power the offense, he may not be producing at quite the same level. As it currently stands, the 49ers' defense has been great and their run game has been the focus of the offense, so Smith simply doesn't need to carry the team.

It may not be so pretty when they face a good defense.

He's averaging little more than 1 catch and about 10 yards/game.

He's playing a position that situates exactly with the QB's comfort zone. The QB looks for dumpoff passes, and he catches a dumpoff pass per game. I seriously would not look beyond that. 8 yards/catch is an embarrassment for any receiver.

Nail meet head. They're not a good football team, IMO. I wouldn't be surprised to see them finish 8-8 after starting 4-1.

Most QB's lose their confidence after some tough breaks.. I don't see that with Smith..

He has a ton of experience now and probably is just out there playing the game care-free in a sense..

Holy smokes! I just don't know where to start on this thread.

There're lots of assumptions and opinions being stated but few have any basis in fact. It's OK of course. It's your board and I'm just visiting. I'm not gonna talk any smack about your Browns. But you folks don't seem to have done your homework on the 49ers.

I hope ya'll get to watch the Niners/Lions game this Sunday. It'll probably be the best game of the week and you might learn a lot about your opponent coming up in two weeks.

OK... Well just for the record, we are 4-1 NOT 3-2.

Our only loss came to the Cowboys when they tied the game with a 50 yd field goal as the clock ticked 0:00. Then in overtime they completed a single long pass play and kicked another FG for the win.
Otherwise, we would be 5-0

Thank you I made an account here just for that post. If you're going to discuss another team, at least get the facts right. We are 4-1 NOT 3-2, we would be 5-0 barring an OT win, Braylon edwards has 4 catches..correct, but he only played 2 games and is out with injury.

Shouldnt you be focused on the raiders game anyway? you guys dont even play us this weekend. Oh and im sure you guys will beat us the week after detroit..because that isnt our BYE week or anything good luck playing an imaginary team.

Two of my close friends are 9er fans, and I follow them fairly closely because of that. I've watched Alex Smith his entire career. He is not a good QB. I'm not telling you anything you don't already know.

You've got a few things going for you. An extremely weak division. A very good RB and TE and a stud MLB. Outside of that, I don't see anyone on the roster that I would want or would be guaranteed to start on any other team ... well, maybe Justin Smith.

I am actually very surprised by the 9ers early success as Harbaugh completely mismanaged the preseason. I couldn't believe the lack of playing time he gave the starters together. I think that was a huge rookie HC mistake, but he seems to have come out of it unscathed. I think a very favorable early schedule and a fairly mistake free A.Smith is getting 9ers fans to buy into the fool's gold. It's not an overly talented team. It's a team that is overachieving by not making the big mistake. At some point, you've got to go out and take a game and win it by taking chances. I just don't believe the 9ers have the horses.

And Smith has been a terrible QB for a long time. The worst thing that can happen to the 9ers organization and fanbase is to have him put up some type of flash in the pan season and just delay the inevitable.

There are other threads, in another forum, where the focus is on the Raiders game.

The topic of this thread is the Alex Smith and the 49ers big turnaround and what may have contributed to them doing so well so far this season. You got anything to add to that subject since you created an account just for this thread?

One would think 49ers fans would love to talk about their team's recent success.

You can laugh at me for saying this, and many of my fellow Niner fans would call me a homer for saying it... but Alex Smith is headed for the Pro Bowl.

Im all for a good talk about the matchups, schemes and whatnot, but when someone has false or misleading info then i will call them out on it. Saying we havnt played anyone notable is fine, but follow that up with the full story. you guys have played teams even less notable, so why is that even a factor in the discussion?

Also it doesnt make sense to get a teams record wrong when, even if you dont know it, you can take 20 seconds and google it to make sure your thoughts are accurate.

not to mention the 49ers will be at home coming off a bye week, and braylon edwards will be back from his injury.

Oh I hope Braylon Edwards plays. We can just leave him on the field by himself and he'll drop anything thrown his way.

Where-as common courtesy would mean you'd politely correct them, especially when first entering someone's yard. Ergo my comment. To finalize the point....

When the discussion is about another team, and why said team's record is what it is, I wouldn't consider it an informed and legit evaluation unless strength of schedule WAS discussed.

So, coming full circle back to my point, the real question is this:

On a thread that has absolutely nothing to do about the Cleveland Browns, why is who we've played even a factor?

We both know the answer, and it comes back to......*wait for it*......*wait....for.....it*.....

Common Courtesy.

Why? because its a misleading statement. Implying that the 49ers have only played so and so is implying that the browns are better than the 49ers, when in fact they arent better on paper or on the field and the facts (if they werent wrong) would prove that, plain and simple. If oyu cant understand that little piece of common sense than i dont know what else to say.

Hmmm......I kinda threw you in with your fellow compatriot. Your two posts weren't that inflammatory. Might wanna show your fellow Niner fan the light.

If the thread can get back on track, taking all the emotion out of it, Smith has a bigger sample to pull from than just the first five games of this year, as the last several games from 2010 made it appear a light came on. It's still a small sample for a guy who had more than five years of mediocre-to-bad play, and the mediocre was never consistent.

Statistically and historically speaking, there's a minute chance he'll be able to keep this up. If the team keeps on doing great things, like ranking top-3 in various categories and having a running game blessed with Frank Gore, he might be able to keep his job going forward by just not making the big mistake.

I was never a believer in Smith. I screamed at the top of my internet lungs for the Browns to get up and take Rodgers no matter where he was on draft day. I don't see different tools that he's shown in the past. I have seen guys like Tim Couch put up streaks like this, only to have him fall back to his natural level. So I'm not ready to say I think Smith is going to spend the last five years of his effective career being a star, not after seeing the teams he's done this all against. I do have to say he's at least given the organization something to think about, even if they are wondering if this is fools gold. (Yeah, I had to close it with a Niners pun. )

efficiency has become the new 49er way this year...its a great game plan thats won them games...That being said, the teams they have played have played subpar at best...the cowboys are up and down, the bucs have been good but havent played playoff football, the eagles suck, the seahawks suck (especially the first couple weeks) and the bengals offense cant win a game on its own, it needs to capitalize on mistakes (which unfortunately we made...2 of em)

Before we annoint the 9ers as the next coming of their 90s dynasty, lets see what happens this week. This week will tell us alot about the Lions...or the niners, but more likely both. One team will show as a legit force for playoff Ws and the other will show to be a pretender (if its a great game, then we may have something else to discuss, but well see there).

Alex has played mistake free, and the 49ers D has played mistake free...that doesnt usually last. Theyre going to lose some games they shouldnt lose soon, its the way the NFL goes...i hope one of em is to us. Alex has been very suspect, its hard to believe that the light just went on. (i kinda hope it has though, he could bail me out in fantasy as freeman and cutler have been iffy and i need someone to show up and be legit)

It took Drew Brees and Steve Young some time to blossom and all 3 started right away. Maybe its the right time and situation for Alex Smith to emerge?

Anybody can point out his struggles in the past to discount what he's doing right today- which yes is managing the game and not making the backbreaking error that kills a tight game. Im saying his job is made so much easier by the talent he has around him and a system that hes syncing up with.

Why not give him props and have some hope that the kid can keep it together. Theres plenty of excitement in th cupboard for emerging young talent. Hell Alex Smith down right has to show his stuff with Aaron Rogers getting his chip last year

Im all for a good talk about the matchups, schemes and whatnot, but when someone has false or misleading info then i will call them out on it.

One person got the record wrong... other than that pretty much everything was opinion.. and correcting somebody for an honest mistake and "calling them on it" are different...

Saying we havnt played anyone notable is fine, but follow that up with the full story. you guys have played teams even less notable, so why is that even a factor in the discussion?

Because the thread isn't about the Browns vs the 49ers... If the discussion had anything to do with which team was better then bringing up our SoS compared to the 9ers would be relevant, but that wasn't the discussion... How good the Browns are is totally irrelevant. But just for the record, there are plenty of discussions of OUR SoS in other threads and there are plenty of Browns fans on this board who think the Browns will only win 2 or 3 more games....

Also it doesnt make sense to get a teams record wrong when, even if you dont know it, you can take 20 seconds and google it to make sure your thoughts are accurate.

If you think you know what it is, why look it up? Do you look up every single fact if you think you already know it?

not to mention the 49ers will be at home coming off a bye week, and braylon edwards will be back from his injury.

That will be good information for a thread in the forum when we play you and we actually discuss our game... but in this thread NOBODY was discussing our game with the 9ers or who was better...

As the starter of this thread I would like to encourage you guys to continue to participate but softening the defensive attitude would really help... but if you would like to contribute some information as to why you think Alex Smith seems to have miraculously turned a corner and become an efficient productive QB, most people here would be glad to discuss and debate that.

He has 5 catches for 41 yards. I wouldn't go overboard with insane praise just yet.

Oh wow am I a moron tonight.

I thought ... Alex Smith ..... and thought TE Alex Smith ......

As far as the QB goes ..... I haven't watched him except for a very small part of one game, but he's got 7 TD passes and only 1 INT so far this year. He's creating big plays in the pass game. He's completing almost 66% of his passes. He's averaging over 7 1/2 yards/pass attempt.

He's currently 3rd in the NFL in passer rating.

He's definitely turned started turning things around ..... now it remains to be seen if he can maintain and build upon it. He'd be one hell of a story if he can.
