Much is made on this board of the relationship between the QB, the talent around them, the scheme, the strength of schedule etc. so I thought this would make for an interesting debate.

Alex Smith, who has been mediocre at best for 6 years, and has been written off pretty much every year as in his "make or break" season, is suddenly playing really well....

So what does everybody think is the reason? Does he suddenly have more talent around him? Has Harbaugh's system made all of the difference? Did a light just come on for him? Will he be the next DA to have a pro-bowl caliber season and then fade back to being sub-mediocre?

I'm curious what y'all think about his sudden rise in performance and whether or not it's sustainable.....

I've been a believer in Alex ever since we drafted him and I've seen him... and our coaching staff at his/it's worst. Along the way, I've also closely followed the career of Aaron Rodgers. (My dad is a diehard Packer fan so there have always been two teams in our house)

Alex and Aaron were drafted the same year but went into entirely different situations. In fact Aaron, who grew up a Niner fan, went to Cal and wanted to be drafted by the Niners, was passed on by the Niners in favor of Alex. This was mostly because of Aaron's mechanics which were poor at the time. Aaron then sat behind Brett Favre, learning, for 3 years. When he took over he inherited a great O-line and recievers who could catch, etc.

Alex on the other hand was thrown to the wolves his rookie year with no O-line to speak of, mediocre recievers and a defensive minded coach(followed by another defensive minded coach). He also was unfortunate enough to have a different OC every year he's played, including this one. It was a recipe for disaster that I don't think would have played better had we picked Rodgers instead.

This year Alex has new OFFENSIVE minded coach in Jim Harbaugh. But Harbaugh was also a quarterback. He understands the position and every nuance about how it's played. Harbaugh also has HIS OWN coaches that he brought with him from Stanford including our OC. Our DC came from the Singletary staff of coaches.

What it all boils down to is CHEMISTRY. It exists between the front office and the coaches, the coaches and the players and most importantly of all, between the HC and the QB.

This is all resulting in the perfect storm for Alex Smith and the 49ers and it isn't luck or a weak schedule or whatever nonsense people say it is. It's real. It's growing. The playbook is getting deeper and you can actually see the entire team getting better and more versatile with each game.

SO, yes I think Alex is finally becoming the QB we drafted. And although he's got a lot to prove still, Aaron Rodgers and the Packers better watch their back. There's a new QB in town who could be the next elite QB.

By the way, Colt McCoy is a GREAT QB also. If he fails, it's probably because something ELSE is wrong.

Cheers!

I was gonna come in and talk about how/why alex smith has improved but Texas pretty much hit it on the head.

As far as candymans comment...Say what you will, but at least our board isnt an eye sore and next to impossible to navigate. not to mention we get our facts right

Sorry had to poke at that one just one more time. All friendly good football talk from here on out.

Fair point it takes awhile to get used to. However it's not that hard to navigate

This is a classic case of a fans pissing contest over a simple misunderstanding. Hopefully we can act like adults now. I probably won't ever look at that site again.

im sure ill be on and off this site during the couple weeks until we play you guys. after that, probably not again until the next time the teams meet. I also have an account at the lions forum. i just like talking football with people that have a different outllok than i do. it also kinda keeps me level headed in stead of getting the false sense of success that you always get if you stay on your own teams board.

Our only loss came to the Cowboys when they tied the game with a 50 yd field goal as the clock ticked 0:00. Then in overtime they completed a single long pass play and kicked another FG for the win.
Otherwise, we would be 5-0

I watched that mess of a 49er-Cowboys game as I had money on it....SF should have lost 3 times before going to TO anyway, Kitna, who had to come in for an injured Romo, tried hard to hand you the game ...and what you didn't mention: SF got the ball in OT and Mr Alex Smith did nothing with it and then you got beat by Romo with cracked ribs

Also, you won a crapfest of a opening game against SEA on 2 punt return TDs...both teams barely gained over 200yds

then against DAL they were outgained 472 to 206yds...so after 2 games SF and Alex Smith Offense barely had gained over 400yds combined on the mighty Ds of SEA and DAL

on to the next crapfest they lucked winning: CIN game 226 to 228yds...coin toss game, you won thanks to rookie mistakes by Mr Andy Dalton, the D won it, Alex Smith managed the game and that was it

Philly game: no business winning that game...Philly lost it you didn't win it...they had it won already...then let you guys come back, missed 2 (!!) under 40yd FGs in the 4th Qtr with a 6p lead...if the rook K would have put at least 1 through that game would have been over right there...2 score game, minutes left...you came back with a TD to take the lead...great...PHI had time left to get into FG range..and they did just that but Maclin fumbled the ball in your territory...you were outgained yet again in that game 442 to 513

and you talk about being 5-0? You got struck by lightning TWICE to be 4-1...you could have easily been 1-4 or 2-3

You guys have an incredibly easy schedule so I expect you to take this NFC West nobody else wants to win but you will get smacked against better teams in the POs and during the reg season and if you really think you have a good team, next season probably won't be a nice one...ask Chiefs fans

Every QB the Browns have had since 1999 has basically gone through what you described above.. different head coach every couple years, different OC every couply years, new system, no really consisten big threats at receiver... there have been a couple of minor exceptions but for the most part we are hoping that with Holmgren and Heckert in charge and their hand picked HC and some recent draft success that we can turn that into the kind of chemistry that you feel SF has now.

I guess it's good the 9ers are getting Edwards back because report is that Josh Morgan (their leading receiver behind Vernon Davis) is done for the year.

LOL... Actually we still had a two point lead against the SeaChickens before the KO and punt return. Seattle DID have the momentum at that point in the game. The KO and punt return however just demoralized them and they lost the will to play. Then we won.

And yes, Josh Morgan who was our best wide out is on IR for the season with a broken ankle and ligament damage.

But this is all off topic isn't it?

It took Drew Brees and Steve Young some time to blossom and all 3 started right away. Maybe its the right time and situation for Alex Smith to emerge?

Anybody can point out his struggles in the past to discount what he's doing right today- which yes is managing the game and not making the backbreaking error that kills a tight game. Im saying his job is made so much easier by the talent he has around him and a system that hes syncing up with.

Why not give him props and have some hope that the kid can keep it together. Theres plenty of excitement in th cupboard for emerging young talent. Hell Alex Smith down right has to show his stuff with Aaron Rogers getting his chip last year

T_

If memory serves, Steve Young came from the L.A. Express in the USFL to the Bucs who were an expansion team at that time. And I believe he had an 0-16 season with them before Bill Walsh brought him over to the Niners to sit behind Montana. The rest is history.

Drew Brees was in Sand Diego and doing well but getting injured too. Then the Bolts drafted Rivers after a devastating injury to Brees that should have ended his career... a bunch of screws in the shoulder and stuff... nasty!

Then the Saints picked him up and he became their savior.

Jim Harbaugh is Alex's savior!

not quite correct timeline on Brees.

SD drafted Rivers after 2 uninspiring Drew seasons. Then, in year3, Drew really blossomed and played probowl level before hurting his shoulder in the last week before his free agency (killing any chance of SD tagging and trading him).

SD let him go to NO where he has continued to build on that season. Rivers hasn't exactly been bad for SD either.

I didn't know playing the games didn't matter. You don't play games on paper, if so yeah Philly has more talent. But fact is we won. Alex isnt a all pro QB, but he is playing much better.

Cincinnati game? Again so what if Dalton made a mistake, then i guess every team who wins doesn't deserve the win then, cause there are mistakes in every single game.

Sure we could be 2-3 or 1-4, but we aren't, we are 4-1, have a great defense, good offense, and a heck of a special teams unit. Don't we have the former Browns ST coach, oh yeah, Brad Seely.

As for the Dallas game, we could of won it. Some bad calls, phantom offsides penalty, but it is what it is, Dallas won, and we have to live with it.

Seattle game was a mess, but we were up when Ginn returned the Kicks for TD's.

And how about the Bucs game? Were we wrong to win the game, 48-3. I thought TB was a Up and Coming team, with Freeman at QB?

Face it, anything can happen, if we played games on paper, the same usual teams would win it each year.

This is it, right here. Outside of the occasional outlier game (See 48-3) most gmaes can be summarized with "well, if this one thing or these two things went another way, we'd have won." That's almost every game, every week in the NFL. That's why the NFL is awesome. It's all about what teams win those games.

Where in God's name are you getting your facts?

Tampa Bay had an 0-14 season in 1976. Steve Young entered the USFL in 1984.

And no team ever went 0-16 until the Lions just a couple years ago.

While true, there are also wins that are simply lucky as they are dependent on things that happen where they have no control over (rookie QB mistakes, Romo getting hurt, K missing 2 FGs AND fumbling the game winng last possession away, ALL in 1 Qtr)...that's my point with the 49ers...I see a team that is already at their overachieving level and still needs some out fo their control stuff to happen to get Ws

Winner winner chicken dinner!!

And I'd go on to say that it's the championship caliber teams that FIND a way to win even when the talent is stacked against them. That is something that comes from coaching, chemistry and a sheer will to win.

Not so sure about having talent stacked against them, championship teams don't have talent stacked against them.. but I think I get your point, championship teams find ways to win games and other teams find ways to lose games and it happens that way consistently.

Heck, watch Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and a few others walk on the field needing to go 80 yards in 3 minutes to win.... their body language just looks like they EXPECT to win... most other QBs walk on and look like they HOPE to win... That is the kind of confidence that only comes with going through it and doing it....

Another Niner fan here...

I was just reading along and had no intention of actually posting anything until I read this. Thats simply LUDICROUS.

Good teams MAKE luck. They don't rely on it.

All you are quoting is the stuff that can be called luck that made us win. What about the stuff that COULD have cost us the game?

1) Against Dallas, the Niner hold at the end of the second quarter on a 3rd down. The niners are clled for offsides-lined up in the neutral zone wen its pretty damn clear he wasn't. The next play? LONG TD for Miles Austin that gets Dallas within 7 at the half.

2) Cincy. Game was much closer than it should have been. Niners get great TD catch from Crabtree that puts thm up by 2 scores. He's called for stepping out the back of the endzone. They settle for a field goal. It isn't util FIVE plays later that TV bothers to show a replay that clearly shows he DIDN'T step out.

3) Seattle. Seattle only gets close because Madeau (sp?) Williams is called for a Personal Foul Penalty that wasn't. Called for Head to head hit. they recievers head was never touched and he led with his shoulder.

4) Philly. Everyone likes to talk about the 2 missed kicks. Ya know what? Akers missed one to and had another BLOCKED. Niners were lucky that Maclin fumbled? Um...Smith STRIPPED it. It wasn't luck. He even talked about how the Philly recievers hold the ball BEFORE the game on the radio.

Bottom line? All of this stuff happens every week in the NFL. None of these are excuses. The good teams have this stuff happen to them and win anyway.

I'm not saying the Niners are going to go and win the Super Bowl or anything, but your argument is simply flawed.

Just some general comments...

The nature of NFL football is that there are a lot of close games, and I think there is a very strong inclination for fans to focus on the breaks that don't go their way and forget about the ones that do. There are a LOT of things in football that can influence the outcome that have nothing to do with the quality of play from either side.

Saying good teams MAKE luck is roughly equivalent to saying that better teams are more likely to win games and that includes close games. That is obviously the case, so I fundamentally I agree. However, from a statistical perspective, 5 games is a very small sample size. 5 years might be a better, albeit less convenient measure, and you certainly see teams like the Patriots, Colts, Saints, etc. stringing a lot of good years together.

Regarding the actual games I can't really add anything as I've only caught bits and pieces of 49ers games.

One of the things that no one has mentioned is that the 49ers offensive line is very, very underrated. They've got 2 first round picks at the ends, and they've got a mauler in Iupati at guard IIRC. Their line is still fairly young and they have growing pains, but as it stands right now, they're pretty good. And whatever you do, please don't kick it to Ginn; don't be an idiot like Carroll was.

Now, to the 49ers fans: payback is coming December 24th! Hopefully the sheep and the tards can fight for the basement of the division by that point.

My point was, is and remains: the 9ers won 3 games that were coin tosses...if you think lucking 3 coin tosses in a row makes you a good team, cool...enjoy the ride...I still think you're an AVG at best team with a well below AVG QB....if you crown Smith your franchise QB after this season, you have doomed yourselves for the upcoming seasons

I take it you'll be watching the Niners/Lions as the early game, right?
I'm predicting a 31-17 victory for the Niners. Perhaps a victory like that against a 5-0 team will change your tune.
If I'm even close to being right, watch what ESPN and the NFLN will have to say about Alex and the Niners.

LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

You can laugh at me for saying this, and many of my fellow Niner fans would call me a homer for saying it... but Alex Smith is headed for the Pro Bowl.

Three QB spots on the Pro Bowl roster, and as of today he's way behind Rodgers, Brees, Stafford, Eli Manning ... hell, if I had to vote today, I'd put Cam Newton ahead of Smith.

With that said, he is having a great year thus far. He's my fantasy backup and will be starting the day you guys play us. I expect Vernon Davis to have a field day against the Browns.

After reading your initial post DC, and then the immediate responses, I'll note that some of these guys on here make good points.

My thoughts on Smith's progress- I attribute his success to the fact that Harbaugh implemented an offense that Smith is comfortable working with: The West Coast Offense. The WCO is as close as an NFL offense can get to the one Smith ran at Utah. - Where he succeeded in running Urban Meyer's spread option. (Because of this, I think it's fair to compare what Harbaugh has done with the '49ers to what Shurmer is doing here.)

Back to the subject.... I'm a believer in San Fran. I think Harbaugh is a great coach and his players are responding. They are a fun team to watch. Somebody noted that the 'Niners should not be praised because they are a mere 3-2, but don't forget that one of their losses was the result of a miracle orchestrated by Dallas.

San Fran is a solid young team led by one of the best coaches in the NFL.

Smith is a 7th year veteran; we know who he is at this point. He's a bust and the pace he's on right now is really, really bad by the standard of today's NFL quarterbacks. Yeah his QB rating is solid, but that's about it. Their passing offense is still rather anemic at best. Through four games he hasn't shown a propensity to make boneheaded, costly mistakes.

Congrats, Alex Smith is now a competent journeyman QB. He's not a complete liability like everyone has been saying. Great first overall pick. Spending all that time, money, and the pick on someone of Kyle Orton's caliber at best.

The 49ers are 4-1. 3-2 is hanging around the thread but they are actually 4-1.

I don't think I can honestly evaluate Smith. I haven't watched him play, and even if I had I wouldn't know what I was talking about.

I remembered Alex Smith had a high wonderlic score. He scored a 40/50.

Then I was reading about it.... It turns out Ben Watson scored a 48/50 I did not know that.

Watson entered the league rumored to have scored a 48 on his Wonderlic Test, an achievement that projects to an IQ of 156

That IQ part has to be BS. I took the wonderlic (got a 48) and there is no way I'm that smart.

Yeah, I don't understand how you can really project an accurate conversion to the two.

I also got a 48, and the last time I took a clinical IQ test I scored 129.

I haven't taken an IQ test in years (and they're inaccurate for younger people anyway) but 150's is genius.

And honestly, I don't see enough of a similarity between the two tests to compare them. Just seems implausible.

Smith graduated in two and a half years. As he should had stayed in school. He left college after that. At least if he would had stayed through his junior year. He would had been a little more prepared physically and mentally.

I agree, you are not that smart.
