For all those advocating us taking Tannehill or Barkley or Jones...I can't buy it. We want them just b/c we "need" a QB and they're the scraps that will be left at 10 when we pick?
I can't speak for what others are saying, but I am not saying we have to take one by hook or crook.
If our scouting reports don't think these guys are worth the pick, by all means pass.
The QB position might be the one position where need dictates a bit more in your draft process, but you don't just draft guys unless you feel they have a legit shot.
That's why I said we need to bring in a vet and look at some of the others.
With Luck, sure, we bet the ranch and ship off 3 #1 picks. If that doesn't get it done, then you consider one of the others with one of your picks.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

Cantonrep is comparing Mccoy to Frye now. Says holmgren is talking about him in terms of The next 10 games as an audition, not the unquestioned starter.
The media is jumping off the bandwagon. Mccoy has precious little time to show some serious improvement.
Frankly, after rewatching some of his games this season, I don't see enough tools to implement a full WCO playbook.
My opinion is just my own, but I didn't need to see two full seasons of Chuck Frye to know ur didn't have it. If I see a couple more games like what I've seen from Mccoy, i'll be done with him. Just like Quinn, Frye before him, and Couch before them both, they cannot be judged on how others around them perform, but they ABSOLUTELY CAN be judged on their own actions.
In short, Mccoy's time is almost up. It's now or never for a guy who is too small and has a weak arm for the NFL. QB's who lack average tools should not, and never do, get two full seasons to prove their medal.
You know toad,, I live in NE Ohio and frankly, while there are still question marks surrounding McCoy, most people I know that talk football at the local watering holes, Starbucks, Heinens etc etc, don't knock him as much as you make it sound.
Quit listening to the media thinking they speak for the fans around here,, they simply don't.

If the Colts get the pick and take Luck it''ll be the most unfair thing I can think of. Seriously to go from Peyton Manning the last 15 years to getting the best prospect since Peyton who will most likely lead the franchise for the next 15.
Seems like the Colts always get the #1 pick when a super-stud college Qb is coming out. Luck this year (I know jumping the gun a little bit), before that Manning, before that ... John Elway! Drafted by the Colts but refused to sign forcing the trade to Denver. That does seem a little unfair doesn't it.

And before that, Jeff George. I also think Bert Jones was a #2 pick. Yes, they have a history of getting #1 pick qbs.

Where's Ryan Leaf (#2 overall to SD in 1998).
Where's David Klingler (#6 overall to Cincy in 1992)?
Where's Rick Mirer (#2 overall to Seattle in 1993)?
Where's Heath Shuler (#3 overall to Washington in 1994)? Oh yeah, he's in Congress from North Carolina.
Where's Akili Smith (#3 overall to Cincy in 1999)?
Alex Smith (#1 overall to SF in 2005) hasn't led his team anywhere yet. SF looks to be on the verge of getting them there this year.
Then there is the largest bust of all time, JaMarcus Russell, the overall #1 pick for Oakland in 2007. He was so bad that the Oakland Raiders wouldn't even let Terrelle Pryor use his number (2) because they didn't want anyone using it.
Sam Bradfor (#1 overall to St. Louis last year) didn't lead his team to the playoffs when he could have done so with a win over Seattle. They lost, giving Seattle the NFC West title and the playoff spot.
I started with Candy's parameters. None of the guys you listed fit. Their teams each had made the playoffs within 5 years of them being drafted.

2) JOKE...U build the team first and u r drafting nowhere even close to getting what SHOULD BE the best QB's in any draft...They go Top 5...Top TWO if they actually r decent...
The last decade of Super Bowl winners, and where the QB was taken:
Green Bay = round 1, pick 24 New Orleans = FA signing; originally drafted in 2nd round Pittsburgh = round 1, pick 11 Indianapolis = round 1, pick 1 New York Giants = round 1, pick 1 New England = 6th round Tampa Bay = FA signing; originally drafted in 9th round Baltimore = FA signing; originally drafted round 1, pick 6 St. Louis = FA signing; originally undrafted
4 were helmed by FA QB's. 4 were not first rounders (5 if you count both Brady's).
2 were Top 5 QB's. 3 were Top 10, and that includes Trent Dilfer.

its pretty funny, D, that you said I should stop listening to the media. I know how you meant it, but of all the people who you might say that to, I'm most certainly not one of them, considering how much I despise the media, especially the Homers in Cleveland
The media doesn't reflect the views of the fans. The fans are influenced by the media. It's the media that built up the Mccoy hype machine, so when you see the media start to jump ship, you know there's a serious problem brewing.
As for the common can, well, they've loved frye, Quinn, Couch, and nor Mccoy. I don't value the common fan's opinion. Those on this board know far more than the common dude.
STEVE, I dont share your belief that Mccoy has answered most of the questions. I know Thatll come as a severe shock to you man what I've seen in replay over the last 2 games actually gives me MORE questions than when the season started. the idiotic throws into double coverage in spite of the fact he was staring right at the defenders tells me his mind can't process the information his eyes see. That's a DISASTEROUS thing for an NFL QB. That leads to a new question which was supposed to be a strength: does Mccoy have a quick enough NFL mind.
Mccoy has very little time to answer that.
I won't get into the rest, suffice it to say I don't agree that he's answered anything. The game replays don't lie and have shown me some very disturbing things...

I"m pretty sure DC was referring to heckert, Holmgren and Shurmur and probably Lerner.. they don't post here but I"m sure they have a vested interest in McCoy and thier opinions DO MATTER
at least I think that's what he meant..

Let's hope we don't have to find out.

The McCoy lovefest is over. Reality is chiming in.....
Cleveland Browns QB Colt McCoy’s Accuracy Issues Cannot be Overlooked Because of Intangibles
Tuesday, October 25, 2011 By Bob Evans Senior Writer
The quarterback position for the Cleveland Browns has been a revolving door since the team rejoined the league in 1999. In fact, only one team (the Miami Dolphins) has used more starting quarterbacks during the past 13 seasons than the Browns.
When Mike Holmgren stepped into his presidential role with the Browns, the one thing he stressed above all else was stability within the organization and the quarterback position. In order to stabilize the team, he removed Eric Mangini from the head coaching position, and put “his guy” Pat Shurmur in place for the 2011 season, and hopefully well beyond.
In respect to the quarterback situation, Holmgren’s moves have been anything but stabilizing.
In March of 2010, he began with a massive overhaul which saw Derek Anderson released and Brady Quinn traded to Denver. He then traded for his former backup quarterback in Seattle, Seneca Wallace, and signed Carolina Panthers cap casualty, Jake Delhomme. Then one month later, Holmgren drafted the “future” of the Browns organization in round three of the 2010 NFL Draft, Colt McCoy, from the University of Texas—vowing McCoy would not see a snap in 2010.
McCoy’s scouting positives boasted the NCAA record for wins (45), his high accuracy percentage (70.3) and his relentless heart and leadership abilities on the football field. However, the same scouting report showed his height (6’1”), his poor field vision and his poor arm strength on throws more than 15 yards down the field as negatives for the former Longhorn.
In fact, one of the most glaring problems McCoy is still having trouble with in the NFL is highlighted here, “what McCoy lacks is good vision at [times] and there are instances where he might throw to a receiver and not see a more wide open receiver.”
Holmgren and the Browns knew the risks when they drafted McCoy, which is why their intent was to not “throw him to the wolves” and let him sit for a year behind two veterans. However, injuries to both of those quarterbacks forced their hand and McCoy had to step in and be “the man” much earlier than expected.
You won’t hear McCoy complain, and the players instantly talked about his leadership abilities and passion for winning when he took over. In fact, after losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers, McCoy was the leader for two huge upsets over the likes of New Orleans and New England. The win over New England may have been the “signature” performance of his rookie season, as he went 14-of-19 for 174 yards with a 73.7 completion percentage in the Browns' 34-14 triumph.
Then reality set in for the young McCoy, and he would lose his last five starts of the 2010 season. Some people blame an injury which kept him out weeks 12-14 (the Browns went 2-1), and think it impeded his growth at the end of the year. However, if you look at his stats he actually played well against Cincinnati after the injury—going 19-of-25 for 243 yards and three touchdowns.
Other people blame McCoy's poor late season production on the vanishing act performed by worn-out running back Peyton Hillis and the Cleveland rushing game. During the two big upsets, Hillis ran for 253 yards and three touchdowns. In McCoy's five losses to end the season, Hillis ran for 237 yards and one touchdown. Without the threat of a vaunted rushing attack—due to Hillis nursing minor injuries late in the season, as well—McCoy and the Cleveland passing game were exposed to tougher coverage from opposing defenses.
McCoy finished the 2010 season with a 60.8 completion percentage, 1,576 yards passing, six touchdowns and nine interceptions. Despite displaying accuracy issues in all but two of his starting performances, the Browns and Holmgren remained confident in their young signal-caller.
The team was so confident in his abilities; they decided to bring in a system which they thought would showcase his collegiate talents in the West Coast offense. However, six games into the 2011 season it is becoming more and more obvious McCoy’s collegiate talents may be far behind him, as he looks uncomfortable in the traditional, under-center approach.
You have to remember McCoy enjoyed the majority of his success at Texas from the shotgun, running a no-huddle offense. For those of you who follow college football, it is much easier to find open receivers when you are spreading four and five guys out against a collegiate defense. McCoy’s 13,253 yards and 70.3 completion percentage in college show he was a very accomplished college quarterback.
His 2,953 yards and 58.2 completion percentage through 14 NFL starts paint a completely different picture.
Some people will say the Browns have much bigger issues which are preventing McCoy from succeeding as an NFL quarterback. Undoubtedly the right side of the offensive line has issues, and the lack of a true “playmaker” at wide receiver has had an impact on McCoy’s ability to rack up wins at the NFL level. Those two issues are not the reason for a 12 percent drop-off in accuracy, however.
Related: Cleveland Browns QB Colt McCoy Taking a Ton of Blame, But Issues Lie Beyond Him
The reason, which many people blindly refuse to see, is the possibility McCoy may have just been a really good system quarterback in college. He has barely shown glimpses of developing into a real threat in the passing game through 14 games, and if he does not show something over the last 10 games of the season, the Browns may have to accept this fact as well.
McCoy has intangibles like desire, leadership and heart other teams would kill to have installed deep into their franchise quarterbacks. Those qualities will help a quarterback extend plays, fight for extra yards and succeed in what may seem to be impossible situations.
What those traits cannot do is teach a quarterback how to throw the deep ball, hit an open receiver and develop into the franchise quarterback everyone in the town of Cleveland wants him to be. So unless McCoy magically finds these abilities over the last 10 games of the Browns’ season, despite the team’s best start (3-3) in a long time, Holmgren and the Browns could be looking for a new gnal-caller come the 2012 NFL Draft.
Quote:
Steve D says McCoy's accuracy must improve Cleveland Browns team report: McCoy must improve aim PUBLISHED Monday, Oct 24, 2011 at 8:43 pm EDT Steve Doerschuk Sporting News
BEREA, Ohio—The encouraging part of QB Colt McCoy’s sophomore season is the 3-3 record through six games. That's a nice improvement on the team's 5-11 record last year and McCoy's 2-6 mark as a starter. The disturbing part is his problem with accuracy, especially early in games.
His misfires have as much to do with the team’s lack of rhythm on offense as anything. He and WR Joshua Cribbs, in particular, have had a hard time connecting, to the point their belief in each other might be damaged. McCoy isn’t hitting Cribbs when he’s open in key spots, and Cribbs has had a few key drops when McCoy has found him. Failing to take the gimmes is one reason McCoy’s yards per attempt have plunged from 7.1 in 2010 to 5.5 this year.
Another problem has been lineup continuity. By the second half of Sunday’s oddball 6-3 win over Seattle, McCoy was in the huddle without LG Eric Steinbach (on IR), RB Peyton Hillis (hamstring), TE Ben Watson (concussion), WR Mohamed Massaquoi (concussion) and RG Shawn Lauvoa (knee). Outwardly, McCoy has maintained his poise; he talks as if he is undaunted and determined to pull it together. It helps that the organization is committed to him as the starter for the season's final 10 games.
The best-case scenario is for the starters other than Steinbach to return and play well, not an unreasonable hope. That will give McCoy a chance to get better acquainted with his personnel as he keeps growing into coach Pat Shurmur’s West Coast system. Whatever comes next, though, McCoy must put the ball on the money more consistently, or the offense will stay stuck, and his future prospects will grow dim.
NOTES: The Browns don’t lose much with John Greco replacing Lauvao. Lauvao is more athletic, but Greco plays with more confidence. Lauvao, a native of Hawaii, has had difficulty adjusting to Ohio. Greco grew up in Boardman, about an hour's drive from Cleveland. ... Running back Chris Ogbonnaya gave the offense a shot in the arm Sunday, five days after being signed off the Texans’ practice squad. Ogbannaya was a Texas teammate of Colt McCoy, and it showed, as they had instant chemistry on routes out of the backfield. Ogbonnaya led the team with 43 receivving yards on five catches. The question is how he can fit in when Hillis comes back from his hamstring issue. Montario Hardesty was Sunday’s workhorse with 33 carries for 95 yards.

You now that you don't have to answer anyone's questions if you don't feel like it ..... right? (at least that's what I've been told by certain board members when I have asked them questions....) Anyway ... I think that it is becoming painfully aware to more and more people that we have a problem at the QB position ... and that the QB position is pulling down the rest of the offense with it. Remember when Greg Little was going to take over for Robiske, and suddenly we would have a competent receiver out there .... and now we'll see that it wasn't McCoy after all ...... Well ... here are the past 5 weeks of play for Greg Little: 4-38 yards 3-24 yards 6-57 yards 6-72 yards 5-31 yards I wonder who could look at those numbers and pick out when he became a starter on the outside. Heck, I have started to change my mind about Little. I still have questions about his speed, but he works hard to make every catch, and he fights for every last inch he can get. Even if he were never to become a starter, he would be a beast of a slot guy.

Colt is one of the most likeable players we have ever had. I don't think there is anyone not wanting this kid to be successful. Also 99% would agree that he needs to finish this season so we find out for sure what we truly have. I just think there are 3 groups, 1 the group that has lost all confidence in him, 2 the very patient group that is still riding the fence, 3 group that believes Colt is fine and all problems get pointed elsewhere.
I am in group 1. I admire group 2. Group 3 is just annoying.
Now as for next year's QB class. I love this class. Luck is getting a little to much hype although the kid has a world of talent but if you ask me to rank where I expect each QB to be in 5 years. Forget it.
I would not be the least bit surprised if all 4 aren't probowlers. It is that good of a class. Those that think Luck is the only QB in this class are likely the same ones saying Cam shouldn't be drafted in the first.

I'm in Group 2.. But I can see why Group one feels as they do. he's not been good. I just feel more time is needed. hey, if it were easy, QB's would be a Dime a dozen just like RB's
Group 3., I just don't know what to say

Never mind ..... I'm not gonna go there.
Go look for yourself as to the comments made when Little was promoted.
Have a nice day.

So you're in a group that has lost all confidence in McCoy, well there is one thing McCoy is doing better than the Frye's Quinns, Andersons, and even Couch when I had lost confidence in them. The Interceptions,
He is still keeping his interceptions to 1 or none per game and that is a big thing compared to where some of these qbs were in the past. He needs to get his yards per completion up there is no doubt about that, and that doesn't mean getting lucky on a few chucks for big gains after that scramble to his right.
McCoy may not be everything you could hope for in a Qb but He's who is going to play, probably, so I HOPE the coaches can kind of find a way to work around Colt , and NOT try 50 pass attempts,
IN short, they neeeed to wake up and not ALWAYS go for the short pass when the situation is 3rd and 5 or less, even 3rd and 7 or less.... the coaches need to get out of their comfort zone and not use the short pass as a running attack and really use the runners as a running attack and use the passes as real quality forward progress passing plays.
( One of those articles above had some of the most complete bunk! I've read in it. this statement. Other teams would Love to have Colt's heart and drive in their franchise quarterbacks.
There are only 32 teams in the NFL, which franchise QB doesn't show as much Heart, which franchise Qb doesn't show as much leadership, as much Drive, as much intangible anything as McCoy shows? Sure Colt might have some leadership , but to suggest any other team is out there wishing they had a quarterback that had the heart and leadership he has, because he has soo much more than others do...
I don't believe that, because every other Qb has leadership too, every other QB in the NFL has leadership too, even non starters and former Qb's like Frye and Quinn, and Tebow have leadership. So I have a problem with that statement in that article. )
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

In order to complete some longer passes somebody has to stop running plays that send both or our WR's and our TE 5 yards down the field in their pass pattern when the D has 10 men in the box. We keep throwing right into the most crowded bunched up part of the field. IMO Right now the problems on offense are caused by Shurmur, Colt, our RT, and our WR's (In that order)
I AM ALWAYS RIGHT... except when I am wrong.

What group represents the fans who think we have much bigger problems than McCoy and that those problems should be adressed first...before we acquire any other QB?

I will say I am group 1 with a slight caveat.
I cringed watching Frye, Quinn, and post 2007 DA play. Really cringed. Knew 100% they were never going to make it.
I don't quite have that exact same feeling with McCoy. It doesn't feel as helpless. I still don't think he's got it but I don't think the window is completely shut either. It may only be open a sliver but there's still a little sunlight coming through. I don't think a guy just all of a sudden loses accuracy. There is more going on there. I just hope he's not damaged goods.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

I kind of feel like u Rishuz.. Pre-Colt everytime we threw the ball I thought it was going to be an interception.. lol. I feel more comfortable watching the throws now.
Group 2 right here. Give him some more weapons and he will win more games. And again.. The o-line isn't exactly healthy right now.. We have some leaks.

I'm in group two- but by the end of the season group 2 will not exist. A decision will have to be made- yeah or neah. Its kind of funny, you find group 3 annoying... that's how i feel about some in group 1. It seems like some just can't wait to have Colt bust so that they can say "i told ya so"- i find that mentality sad. I really want this QB carousel to come to an end. I really want Colt to be the guy. The lack of OTA's have hurt his progress, make no mistake about that. I just hope the light comes on soon.
And a general question: who are the other top QB prospects-- what teams should i be paying attention too?

Well group 1 has super annoying but we wont discuss their names hmm all the egos in that group we may need two groups just to make room for them lmao.
Oklahoma-Jones USC- Barkley Texas A&M- Tannehill
Will be interesting to see Luck and Barkley go head to head. Jones will probably be the 2nd QB off the board due to his arm strength and size. Really has a quick release and he can put it in spots most QBs wouldnt attempt, some times he shouldnt attempt lol.
Barkley is listed at 6-2 looks even smaller doesn't have the big the others has but a pretty good arm, just a terrific passer. Excellent mobility, reads defenses well, really isn't a lot of difference between Barkley and Luck. Luck just looks the part more than Barkley.
Tannehill played receiver for a couple of years to get onto the football field. Took over at mid season last year and has played terrific. gets better every week. Big strong kid with mobility, good arm, accuracy. Watch Texas A&M and you will see why I want this kid for this offense.

Before the season I caught a lot of groans around here about judging Mccoy when 1) we stood pat on the worst set of wrs in the NFL I was lambasted how Robiskie and MoMass were supposed to become top receivers magically because it was their 3rd year. how's that working out? 2) I groaned that poor McCoy had a lousy right side to the oline and we did little to address the problem. The front office continued with delusional pronouncements about the play of Pashos 3) we elected to dump bruising fb for a rookie and how's the run blocking doing.
To "grade" a young QB with so dubious a cast is a rash judgement to say the least. I expect to see growth now that Robiskie is on the bench and ditto Shaun Lavaou, who has stunk on ice. I would sit pashos as well. More passes to Little please. Give it a rest and let the team grow. we are already far better defensively than i thought and uh hum, I think speed at LB improved after a vet went hurt.

Noone said they would be top receivers...
It's a general rule in the NFL that WRs "blossom" in their 3rd year (BE in 2007 for example)
And there are things about Colt you can grade REGARDLESS of whos around him, and he's failing in alot of those aspects imo.
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

Maybe as a 5th round throwaway. Unless a guy is the next Peyton Manning, I'm not interested in a rookie QB who is going to be 29 during his first year.
Of course the ideal situation would be for McCoy to suddenly get some snap........

The fans are influenced by the media
Only those that can't or wont' think for themselves.. otherwise, the rest of us will make up our own minds... when he's had enough time..
And even then, there are really only 2 or 3 peoples opinion that matters as far as when he's had enough time.. and none of them post here.
then there's no real point to have this forum, so therefore Purp should just shut it down.
I"m pretty sure DC was referring to heckert, Holmgren and Shurmur and probably Lerner.. they don't post here but I"m sure they have a vested interest in McCoy and thier opinions DO MATTER
at least I think that's what he meant..
Actually Daman you are correct. The 2-3 people I was talking about were Shurmur, Heckert and Holmgren.. since Lerner is pretty hands-off. As far as the need for this forum, it's fun to debate stuff but in the end, the 3 guys listed above are the only opinions that will make change... and we will know, come this off-season (perhaps before if things get bad enough but I doubt it) if they think Colt has had enough time... I'm still not sure what Toad thought I was talking about.

D, I wasn't ignoring you when you said if I know I should freakin' say it. I'd gone to my girlfriends after my "guess again" post. Over there, we have an agreement: I don't go anything football, because if I do, then she gets to watch Sex In The City, and as much as I love football, I hate that stOOpid show even more.
DC, I was sure you were making one of those comments which suggested that while only those 3 guys have opinions that matter, it more meant that when certain people suggest McCoy doesn't have much time left, said opinions don't matter. One of those "you aren't in the FO so fortunately your opinion is meaningless" kinda deals. If you didn't mean that, then I had it wrong. It wouldn't be the first time that debate move has been used. You know the one's......you aren't in the office so you can't know what they are thinking.....if you know so much, why aren't you a scout or an NFL exec......you're about as sharp as a bag of wet mice......oh, wait, that's not on this board, that's my boss talking to me...wrong topic!

Go look for yourself as to the comments made when Little was promoted.
Have a nice day.
