Tried to post pictures of this guy this morning but, that didn't work out. See if this video I took of him this morning in southern New Mexico works better. He is moving behind the cabin next door after hanging out at mine for too long.
Anybody have any idea of what kind of snake he is?
They are related...they say Bullsnake aka Gopher snake. I like some of the Gopher snake pictures I'm seeing as a match. Lighter head...really freaking long...markings. Did you say you got a good head shot?
A bull or goher snake has what appears to be a stripe running the length of it's body just under the markings on it's back while the rat snake lacks the stripe and just continues with similar marking.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.
I still like gopher snake (bullsnake)....one site I found says the gopher snake has a head about the same width as its body. Looks like the rat snake has a more triangular shaped head. Thoughts?
I can't get a picture to link to the thread, I'll try as an attachment...
I get it...I do. I hate snakes when it comes to *me*. They really are good though...and I know this. If I lived where they were more common, I might feel differently. Seriously, they terrify me.

I know snakes are good. Oddly enough, as a youngster, I used to search them out, pick them up, hold them, etc. (granted - they were garder/garter/gardner/ect snakes)
Today? I don't care what kind of snake it is - if I see one and it's not fleeing from me, I guarantee I'm fleeing from it.
Kinda like heights. Used to!be I could climb up 30 or even 40 feet and not think twice about it. Now? Being on the roof of a ranch style house is pushing it. Climbing a tree for deer hunting I can go 15 feet - tops. Generally I sit a bit lower than that.
